See the description for frequently-asked questions. Good luck with your future sashiko projects made with your very own thimble! Please tag me on Instagram (@XiaoxiaoYarn) with your results, I'd be very happy to see them! Happy stitching. :)
Just made one. But as a rectangle. I took the waistband from the jeans, pushed the leather label inside, closed the two edges and sewed the "ring" out if a belt loop on. It feels good in the hand. The sashiko needles will arrive on Wednesday, then I'll give it a try. My first try with regular needles gave me the feeling, that these needles are too short.
This is so delightful and cheerful. I was lucky enough to be able to get a metal sashiko style thimble when I splurged to order good needles, but one can never have too many. Even if I never follow this tutorial watching it made me smile. Your editing style is just pure joy. Thank you.
I’m surprised that the needle eye doesn’t poke through. I expected to find you’d put a layer of leather inside! But that’s a great way to wear a thimble! And many people don’t like our western version as it feels bulky on the finger tips, or keeps falling off! I’m going to try this. If I do find thinner needles poke through, I shall put a small circle of hard plastic between the layers. That should do the trick. Thank you for your lovely videos. Your gracious gentle speech is solace to my tired ears. And your workmanship is beautiful and your teaching an inspiration to try sashiko. Thank you
Hi Bella Bee; Me too, I was concerned about being poked. While cutting out my circle from the waist band on my Dad’s old jeans (I’ve asked all family to keep their old jeans for me to upcycle ♻️😉), and noticed the leather rectangle that is on most jeans sewn onto the waistband at the back… so I got out my seem ripper and removed it. I was able to cut a circle out of it, because they are not too thick, and using a stiff/sharp darning needle, I was able to attach my stitched circle, following the above tutorial, and then was able to sew it to my belt loop ring I had made. It’s not as pretty of course, but it works great and is more flexible than a plastic disc I think. My father used to make leather finger thimbles for my Mom when I was young. I remember she loved them, as the needles never went through the leather.
Holy smokes! This is just the best and most clear video of this process. I highly enjoyed and, best of all, I learned several helpful things as well as now I know how to make this item!! Thanks so much for such an enjoyable, informative video!
Thank you so very much XiaoXiao for making this wonderful video! I followed your instructions and made my own Thimble (what is this kind of thimble called in Japanese?). It’s not as pretty as yours of course, but I’m actually pretty proud how it turned out. While cutting my circle out of the waistband of my father’s jeans (don’t worry, he was done with them 😉), I noticed the rectangle leather patch that most manufacturers sew into the back waist band of jeans to show their brand. I removed it easily with my seam ripper and because it’s not too thick, I was able to cut a circle out of it to match the size of my fabric (denim) circles. I made the fabric circle first, then attached the leather circle to the back of my Sashiko thimble circle, then sewed it onto my ring (made from the belt loop of the same black jeans.). I wish I could up load a picture here to show you as I’m so grateful for your instructions. Thank you so much. Arigatō 🥰 ありがとう
Great idea! I wish I had a pair of my dad's old work pants! The fabric was much tighter than denim jeans are! I do have some leather pieces - suede - that would work. I slowed the video down quite a bit and it helped a lot! I love making tools!
Great, lovely and I made one, not as elegantly or as quickly as yours but such a great project and since it is the first thimble I have made I will cherish it, thank you
Hello Xiaoxiao, your videos are so nice to watch- especially if you start it with a view of beautiful nature outside where you live- the trees, birds and so on! Thank you for this tutorial and the work you put in your videos. Best regards from austria🙏😊
Thank you so much for attending the workshop! It was a delightful afternoon spent with all of you. Happy stitching! And please share your sashiko projects with me-I’d love to see them!
I noticed your thimble and wondered where/how and then your vid pops up in the suggestions. Wonderful. Thank you so much, Xiaoxiao! Love the vids by the way. You are a wonderful instructor. Yes, I agree with Nausi Windstrider, on your editing style.
Thank you for the tutorial and entertaining video! I made one too and adjusted by using some elastic for the part that goes around the finger. It took me a little longer than 4 minutes to make mine 😄 but works well.
Thank you for directing me to this video. I will be making one of these palm thimbles, although I wish I had some denim to recycle. Maybe a trip to the thrift store? Love watching the stop motion video!
Such a lovely video. I love the therapeutic properties of Sashiko, Itwill be my quiet time hobby. Thank you for your videos showing us how to enjoy and succeed with this technique. 💛
What a great idea, and very much in the spirit of Sashiko to make it from recycled materials! I adore your cute stop-motion animations too. Really great and entertaining video. I'm about to start Sashiko (got materials on order) and your channel is going to be super-helpful. Thank you so much. New subscriber.
Thank you! Saved me another order. Past thimbles usually don't last so I was hesitant in buying one. I have plenty scraps from jeans especially the waist band. Thanks for your video. I'll be watching as I'm going to learn this technique.
@@XiaoxiaoYarn I made my thimble I used a pocket flap which was wider than waist band. I did not know what size circle but made it. It different and not circle but very thick. Two belt loops as they were small so even ring is double thick. I can't wait to get started. LoL
@@Diana-mi4ru Ha! the circle is actually 4cm in diameter. I just updated my description. :) And it is supposed to be super comfortable. :) Good luck with your first sashiko project!
Thank you! I didn't put any metal piece. If you chose the right material (3-4 layers of 100%cotton, tightly weaved fabric), it should work perfectly just by itself.
Hi Carla, if it's for this project you can either use a regular needle or a sashiko needle. For other sashiko projects, you should be able to find a link in the description of my needle recommendation. But, yes, I should make a video on how to choose sashiko needles according to patterns and fabrics very soon. :)
Por favor Xiaoxiao, serías tan amable de enseñarnos cómo hacer el dedal que usas tú en tu dedo con el sistema Sashiko? Muchas gracias y saludos desde Valencia (España) ❤
Hi, to attache the two circles, you can look for a blanket stitch tutorial. To join the disc and the ring part, it is a simple running or back stitch. Hope this answered your question!
Hi, rescued jeans fabric is a great idea! You can use any cotton thread, and I recently found sashiko thread is great for the cross stitches on the disc. Thank you!
Because denim is originally a cotton fabric (nowadays it’s often blended with Lycra or Polyester), but cotton is the best I found (as well as more traditional)…. But I too wondered if a different blend might glide easier? Please let me know if you’ve experimented?
This is lovely! I'd probably add leather or a piece of metal in the middle as I can be foggy and press overly hard without Even realizing and stab myself lol. But for a normal person this is perfect just as is!!
