This makes me want to take up Sashiko more than any other Sashiko video I've watched recently... there's something about making my own equipment that I find really attractive. I'm just wary of spending money on special thread and needles and then just not keeping it up - it's happened before with other things - because money's so short at the moment. Is it worth practising with normal thread and needles first, just to see if it's right for me?
I totally agree with you. Sashiko was originally used by poor people to mend and reinforce their clothes because they couldn’t afford to buy brand new garments. So I have a mixed feeling about buying expensive Sashiko tools. They are cheap in Japan but I live overseas now and it’s not easy to find them at local shops. I sometimes use embroidery threads and needles instead. I have a video about Sashiko tools and their alternatives, I hope it helps you find something locally.
