Re. the bycatch of the dolphin, we deliberately included the pic because it shows the reality of the period. It was a less conscientious age. This was during the time of the whaling station at the Bluff and when sport fishermen on the pier hunted Great Whites with rod and reel. By the way we have included entire chapters on whaling, sharks and deep sea fishing - so it's no longer just about the Seinenetters. I think in future editions, with more feedback, the story net will be cast even wider!

This is such an important story for Durbanites to come to grips with. As a Bluffie much of this is new to me and helps to give me a much broader understanding of communities amongst whom I have been fortunate enough to make sincere friendships.

I absolutely enjoyed reading your book which I got out of the library.
I remember as a young mother living at Addington Beach and often walked down to watch the fishermen. I didn't know their story then. I feel sad that this community was isolated and removed from the sea. A wonderful, wonderful book filled with amazing stories. Well done. Hopefully one day I will be able to own a copy.

Very good. Pity no mention was made of the Durban Ski Boat Club who to this day helps the last of the netters survive by helping to maintain their boat and allowing them free use of our tractor to move the boat up and down the beach.

my grandfather was also in the fishing business in africa.
he owned 4 fishing trawlers in addition to other businesses like a factory for textiles manufacturing.

I had my fishing gear confiscated by the police on North pier, but I spoke to their superior and explained that our forefathers fished here and this is how people put food on the table, the officers were silent and returned my gear, fishing is still restricted in many parts of the harbour area???

Please note the launch of this book has been pushed back to end of March - we have discovered another 50 great photos (including pics from the Ski Boat Club) which we had to put in...

@BushZulu Thanks for you comments. The head of the Seinenetters, Keita Moodley, has acknowledged the considerable support given by the Durban Ski Boat Club and who informed us of a box of photographs at your club which we may be able to access. We will try and include this in the book, with the permission of your club.

You'd never get a net full like that these days. I remember when I was a kid, shad fishing they were basically jumping out the sea.

I enjoyed watching your doci, very moving especially the music and it's great to learn our history. But I also get a feeling that the world owes these people a favour for the afflictions done to them. Surely there is a positive angle. Is it about the forgotten people or rather about remembering what they achieved despite hardships they endured, doesn’t this make us stronger?

And so the plundering of the sea with "take everything you get" continues to this day, the seas are denuded of fish, I have seen the collapse in my life time.

I've been trying to find stories of the glory days of Durban fishing, back when the whaling staion was still operating. The piers were some of the best fishing spots on the planet. So far no luck finding info. Does anyone know of a good website?

Dear Glen - sorry for taking so long to reply, I was very busy on a few projects. Thank you for your comments. Putting this video up on youtube a few years ago was such a great learning experience for us in how we can improve a book from feedback received, leads, advice etc. The book has grown in scope and depth, and the rebooted version - which does answer your concern - is right now at the printers at last (whew!). Please watch this space for more details.

P.s The pic of the dolphin amongst the huge catch of shad and you trying to profit from this doesn’t make your case very strong. I’m only taking the time to say all this is because I really feel your story could be one of human triumph. All the best. Glenn.
