It's funny how both Infinite and Mephiles tried going against Shadow,he forgot them and then beat them not knowing who they are but not caring because they are bad and Shadow in his mind has a job to do. It's not exactly the same but it's funny to think about.
That's because infinite was like a fodder grunt he met before but the reason he doesn't remember Mephiles is because he got erased from the main timeline and the reason he appeared during Sonic generations is because the time eater warped time and space so much that Mephiles managed to manifest himself again.
That's a very surface level comparison. Shadow didn't forget Mephiles because he was fodder, he "forgot" him because his memories were literally wiped. Also, Shadow didn't fight Infinite after forgetting him, he just got l ut in an illusion and ignored.
Mephiles screaming, "I want to exist!" made me feel extremely uncomfortable. Something about him begging to exist was worse than him begging for his life.

I like to imagine that after the boss fight, Big The Cat came along, found the sceptre, thought it was something that somebody dropped, and took it with him, still having it on hand after leaving the White Space, not knowing just what he'd brought back into the timeline.
The Producer of Sonic x Shadow Generation, who was the Director of Sonic 06, said in an interview that he would like to do a remake of Sonic 06. So that is one way to get more of Mephlis, but it could also be a redemption for Sonic 06 as a whole. Right now that is just his thoughts from one interview though.
I wouldn't mind seeing Sonic 06 getting finished, it had promise just poor production time, I mean just look at Project 06 that game is impressive and it's basically just "Sonic 06 with time"
I agree as despite Sonic 06 for the time being said to be the worst game (that title now belongs to Sonic Boom games) people nowadays do realize their is a good game underneath all the mess that everyone noticed. So a remake could redeem it. Also with how the Sonic remakes have been adding stuff to help freshen it up, I think they could add an extra seperate story mode that lets you play as Mephiles.
About the inhibitor rings, Gerald says in some optional dialogue that with the doom powers Shadow is overflowing with power to the point that if he took of the inhibitor rings he’d probably explode.

It’s been theorised that Time Eater may actually be a fragment of Mephiles that survived 06, maybe it brought Shadow to White Space at the one chance to free him.
3:57 Iblis actually still exists inside of Blaze. If you remember, Blaze absorbed Iblis at the end of 06, and she was not present during The End of the World when Solaris awakened. And due to time travel shenanigans, Blaze actually still has Iblis to this day. Ian Flynn has said so on his podcast. So if Mephiles really was to properly return to the timeline… oh boy. Blaze would have to watch her back at all times
That's going based on the assumption Mephiles can even get to/knows about Blaze, she exists in another dimension, and he never witnessed Silver sealing Iblis away
I think the best thing that could happen if Mephiles gets restored to the timeline is if he ultimately wins in the next game. And then, the next-next game would be a continuation for how to defeat him and fix the main Sonic universe. Basically Mephiles would be like Thanos and would win in the first game, just like Thanos did in Infinity War. But then, the heroes would make a comeback in the second game and defeat Mephiles, just like how the Avengers restored the population of the entire universe and defeated Thanos in Endgame.

Here's an idea for Mephiles returning: -The Time Eater's actions during Sonic Generations sent ripples through spacetime. Upon their creation, these ripples are so small that they cannot be detected, thus they escaped Eggman's notice. However, they eventually grow and become more and more tangible, capable of creating portals in time. During the events of '06, Mephiles encountered one of these ripples by chance, not as a portal, but a window through time. Through this, Mephiles foresaw his coming demise. Mephiles did everything he could to keep this time window a secret, and once it grew large enough to become a portal, he sent one of his clones through it into the future. If Mephiles won, that clone would just be another addition to his army. If Mephiles failed, the clone would carry out his will and begin his plan all over again. This clone of Mephiles could serve as one of the antagonists of a future installment, if not the main villain. The one who sets the events of the story in motion.

Mephiles did break the seal when Team Dark tried to seal him a second time. No idea how Mephiles wouldn’t break it a third time. But even so, Mephiles WAS in the seal when Time Eater brought him back so..

Funnily enough, Mephiles is the most likely villain to escape from Shadow Generations. He can already travel through time with no additional aid so all he would need to know is that this is a different Shadow than the one he fought before and he could easily use his abilities to escape into White Space and follow Shadow. His dialogue seems to indicate that he already knew everything and that something was blocking him from doing that unless he supposedly defeated Shadow. The big question is where he got that idea from? Did he already try? Did somebody else visit him? Or does he know something we don’t about the boss arenas?

So one idea I have for Mephiles returning is that at the end of Sonic Generations both present and past Eggman are shown to still be trapped in White Space and they kind of just… pop back up in their respective timelines without a real explanation… so with that in mind, what if in their search for an exit, they come across Mephiles in his prison and make a deal with him where in exchange for getting them back to their proper timelines, they will free Mephiles and allow him to return to the timeline
That's my exact theory as Mephiles is half of a time god, a place like white space should be easy for him to break out of if he isn't trapped in the scepter of darkness.
Mephiles was somehow planned to appear in Sonic Forces (I have no idea how). And also due to the success of Sonic X Shadow Generations, the developers do want to work on a Sonic 06 remake
The only chance I see Mephiles ever returning is in the aftermath of Sonic's fight against the Time Eater and would also need the Phantom Ruby to at least be a decent enough threat to be worth any real attention.

I think at the end of his boss fight after shadow kicked him into the purple goo Mephiles swaped himself out for one of his clones and that clone is what got sealed away and the real Mephiles was able to slip away and escape the cave and could sneak to the main timeline.
As for the inhibitor rings, Gerald at one point says if he took them off after what Doom had done he might explode. He may not have reached that point till getting the wings, but still.
I like to headcanon that all of the goop you use Doom Morph in is actually Mephiles’. Not just the goop in his boss fight. Implying that he’s actively been trying to re-enter the timeline, managing to get his goop in both White Space and Chaos Island. If my headcanon is correct and he reappears in another Sonic game, it may be some time after Sonic Frontiers.
Best I could think of is a Silver game where he deals with a time travel related situation, but smth goes haywire in the process. Which then brings back parts of the erased timeline, allowing Mephiles return. Potentially having it that the parts that were brought over are now permanent to the actual timeline, which keeps Mephiles as a potential threat.
Mephiles is like the Reverse Fladh or the CW take on Savitar. Oh and Ian Flynn went on record saying Solaris is the most powerful Sonic has faced, he included the Time Eater in this so yes Solaris could defeat the time eater.
If Mephiles ever comes back as the main villain then I think I know how his story is going to go, the whole game he will be manipulating other characters, until the final hours of the game, then all his plans fall apart causing him to breakdown again because if sonic and his friends find a way to beat him then they'll probably have to erase the timeline again, mephiles is probably super scared of that happening again
What’s more terrifying is that the time eater lets iblis stay in the open in crisis city so he finds no threat in iblis but he hides mephiles meaning mephiles might be stronger than iblis
The thing about Mephiles is that he shouldn't return. He can't die (plus with the whole time thing he may actually be a time paradox), so the only way he can be defeated is by ceasing to exist. The only way he loses is by being forgotten, and that becomes more canon with every game he's not in. Don't get me wrong tho, he was the show stealer in Generations and I love that for him
He kinda reminds me of villains like The Lich from adventure time, creepy serious ones in children shows. A cool return for him would be in the 5th Sonic Movie where he actually Wins like an infinity war thing, setting up for Sonic 6 to introduce Silver and that whole ordeal where it's just history repeating itself with a few differences. Would also mean technically the whole movie cast would be Dead, needing a do-over. Similar to how DBZ did the android saga.
The Time Eater had to pull Crisis City, Kingdom Vally, and Mephilis from somewhere, right? So some small remit of that 06 timeline must exist. Plus I think the Time Eater itself is a remint of Mephilis. Both are purple gas-like blobs that have the power to manipulate time. The difference is that the Time Eater is much weaker and is incomplete. Eggman did say it was in a primordial form when he first encountered it.

In the past, Mephiles liked to toy with Shadow, messing with his mind and allegiances through thought provoking speeches. He liked to draw out his encounters with him. This time around, he tries to kill Shadow immediately without hesitation! I think this speaks volumes to how desperate Mephiles is. In the past, Mephiles was pretty close to untouchable. Always in control. Now that he's spent god knows how long trapped in limbo after Solaris was defeated...I think the reality that he's not actually invincible has set in. This version of Mephiles has a new priority. To simply EXIST!!!
I really wish they would remake Sonic 06. They clearly still have some love for it. Also I'd like to point out that Shadow not releasing the inhibitor rings is similar to Sonic facing Perfect Chaos without the emeralds. The experience increase they've both had at this point have given them an edge they didn't have before.
This was personally MY first experience with Mephiles (bc I can't bother with 06) but, I loved him and I can see WHY everyone loved him. I think, for me? The new voice is my Mephiles and I hope he comes back. Truly, Robbie did AMAZING and god he's so cool. Honestly? I would love for it to be a case of, well, Iblis. Instead of bringing solely MEPHILES back.. Why not let Iblis be that "Trigger"? Ay? Get what I did there? Anyway, Give us a Blaze game with Mephiles. Thats.. what I'm hinting at. As I think it was stated that Iblis IS still kinda in Blaze. Could be a great explanation and maybe because of that time gets fucked with a bit, maybe Shadow sees it? Leads to a connection to Mephiles.. He exists by memory leading to an eventual comeback. Just a small idea.
Well, Silver seems to have something remanentes of what happen on his subconcious, he mentions feeling like he had known blaze before when first meeting her dosn't he? Maybe if something causes Silver to awaken some of those latent memorys and he travels trough time in an attempt to find what he is forgettikg, he could accidentally end up bringing Mephiles back
I feel like the Time Eater brought back Mephiles on purpose because perhaps the Time Eater is either a part of Mephiles or is an entity CREATED by Mephiles, and Black Doom sealed him underground in Shadow's White Space out of fear that Solaris could return.
IF Mephiles returned, it would likely be due to a new time-related fight or something that can shatter the fabric if even for a moment. Maybe the defeat of the Time Eater after using the flaming move could've opened a rift in time for Mephiles to escape some time into the future with, especially with how the Time Eater's core was destroyed in the end of the fight.
What If Black Doom got the scepter of darkness, and somehow managed to put it back into the timeline, after the fight with Shadow, and then brought back Mephiles so they can team up.
I find it so ironic mephilles a person is fighting so hard to exist, when hes the same being trying to make everything cease to exist. Mephilles, eggman and metal sonic is goat villains of this series.
It's funny that everyone wants this character back and doesn't see a way of it happening but as far as I understand he was only a race from a timeline, and as far as I understand sonic mania / sonic superstars is a different timeline, so it's possible. The character could come back in that timeline, or appear in the main canon timeline from the sonic mania / it's sonic superstars, timeline, because we know that's a possibility, because we've seen it happen with classic sonic and sonic forces
Naw Mephiles should just stay dead. He served his purpose of trying to manipulate Shadow into joining him but failed cuz Shadow knows who he is. It’s cool he came back in Gens but I think his moment for that game was a perfect way to conclude his writing n dialogue towards Shadow. He went from being the guy who knows how to control the game to being nothing but a pushover for Shadow. Bringing back Shadow was ok since Sonic Team could just continue his arc of protecting Earth for Maria while also just try to find his own happiness. Mephiles, he’s the embodiment of evil so there’s no redeeming him or any real way to make him interesting. What could Sonic Team really do to make Mephiles interesting? Shadow doesn’t even remember him n even if he did, Mephiles was just an obstacle that Shadow overcome. Plus Mephiles interaction with other characters ain’t that interesting since he is just busy gaslighting Silver n barely interact with other characters. Only moment where he shine was trying to manipulate Shadow which he can’t used that card anymore. They could bring Mephiles back if 06 remake becomes true but for new games, I think Shadow is better off facing new foes rather than face old ones again
If Mephiles will comeback, i want this to be in a Silver game, here's why: 1.Silver vs Mephiles, if made the final battle where Mephiles will ever come back, would be the best fight to put him in, because it would also help Silver to have a character development. Maybe, if they will do so, Mephiles will make him remember everything that happened in 06 (except that famous moment, yk what i'm talkin about) 2. Silver, from an easy to manipulate and naive hedgehog would grow out to be more confident, even tho this won't have to change his entire personality 3. Since his debut in 06, Silver never had his chance to shine, as we all know, so if he will have one (probably in 2027), i think Sega must face what happened in 2006 once and for all with a game featuring Silver as the protagonist and Mephiles as the antagonist of the story, they will completely do justice to Silver after 22 years and they would make a great ending for Mephiles, by Silver facing him as a chance to improve himself I hope Sega will make this come true in the future, because after all, by hoping is to make a better future, and i'm sure Sega will finally give Silver the future he deserves Peace🩵
My thoughts on Mephiles returning: Right now, he is a force to be reckoned with, and you can play that fear factor up a ton, but there's a limit before it becomes stale. In my opinion, he only has one major return to be properly evil, and if he comes back again after that it'll seem like they're running out of ideas. I propose that he not be a Big Bad like Eggman, or even a character like Metal Sonic who works in small doses, but instead he is granted a "realm" to exist in safely, as compromise. Perhaps even a sort of reformation is possible, though something as truly evil as he is will never be strictly speaking GOOD. As for the how, it's pretty simple. Since he was brought back by Time Eater in the first place, the events obviously weren't so thoroughly erased that no one could bring them back, they were more likely just "covered" with a "time blanket" or something. It'd take a single person who remembers, even just a random human, to try to build a time machine or a chaos reversal chamber or some other dodad and he'd just punch a hole into that forgotten and banished timeline. Perhaps, from there, Mephiles could go back to his more calm, collected, spooky tone, knowing that there is a chance for escape from his limbo of life.
It's also poetic in that you could easily say he's the reprisentation of his home game, Sonic 06, and how it by extension is utterly rejected and disowned by the fans, franchise, and story unianimously as a rejected concept. It's insanely meta even within the confines of the plot of Sonic 06, writers wrote in an ending that wrote off Sonic 06. Wow! Call it a reach but I'd say that's a great way of executing a mistake as a work of art. edit: His come back could litterally be the last glitch, Sonic 06 was known for seep into all this timespace manipulation, allowing for his temporary escape. Like the many times the player dealt with his character phase through the great beyond back n the day😂
Silver in Generations needs a story now, after knowing why shadow wasn't at Sonic's birthday and having a rival battle in sonic generations and a cutscenes in shadow generations now we understand why shadow wasn't in the first cutscenes of Sonic's birthday just to find answers from his past on the space colony ark, now I'm questioning on Silver because wasn't at Sonic's birthday in the first cutscene and you rival battle him in Sonic generation and the last cutscene at Sonic's birthday shadow shows up right by Silver talking to each other, so Silver had to be fighting Iblis in the base game and not showing us because crisis city is in the base game too along with Silver fighting you and the final battle cutscene with the time eater Silver randomly cheering sonic on for the big fight and the writer changed shadow's "you got this sonic" to "on your feet" which means Silver needs a campaign and dialog changed because he fought sonic just like shadow did so Silver would be like " IT'S NO USE, I know you can do better" or something like that sorry for ranting heh shadow is my favorite character and right beside him is Silver
I think Mephiles will possibly return he was able to destroy the sceptre of darkness in 06 ‘what may have sealed me 10 years ago now longer does’ so he might break the sceptre
Also.didn't help that mephiles was erased from time... So his attempts to pull the strings on Shadow failed because Shadow's memories and history with the villain were also erased. So he couldn't do any mind games.
Time Eater doesn't seem to have a will of it's own. Eggman wouldn't know about Mephilis either so seems unlikely either of them intentionally hid him. It may be a manifestation of the 06 timeline. Eggman and maybe Doom could have unwittingly cracked his prison of sorts.
What if he made it seem like he went back in the sceptre but he inside shadows shadow or maybe silver is going back in time and he catches a ride with him maybe he’s how Dr. Eggman escaped white space
it is a shame that some people do not like this fight because they fail to see Mephiles's desperation, they wanted him to be exactly how he was in 06, with his cold and calculating attitude even though it is clearly reasonable to understand why he's being desperate here. Heck some people don't like it because Dan Green didn't come back to voice him either...which I really think is petty, Robbie did a good job I believe.
Mephiles' new voice is legitimately better in my opinion, it feels more angry and spiteful than Dan Green did Dan Green was channeling his Atem voice and its far more noble sounding Im super biased because Happy Chaos is one of my favorite fighting game characters though and the exists line is basically the same delivery

A lot of people see this as Sega confirming that Mephiles will never come back. I see the exact opposite. When it comes to characters returning, it is often only a matter of how much people want to see it. If people want it enough, a writer can find some BS to make it happen. Just look at every comic villain that came back due to popularity. In the past, the main reason Mephiles would NEVER return was not because his timeline got erased. But because 06 was such a memed failure that Team Sonic wanted to forget about it. Pretend it never happened. It was the Star Wars Prequels of Sonic. But... much like the Star Wars prequels, over the years, fans began to appreciate the good in 06. Recognising it as the rough draft of a game that could have been good. And Mephiles in particular has gone from "Dumb edgelord villain" to being praised as one of Sonic's best villains. Type "Mephiles" in the you tube search and the first things you see are essays calling him an amazing villain And I think Sega has taken notice. They've seen the interest, but... they're also cautious. They got burned before. What if this is just some vocal minority and most Sonic Fans actually still hate Mephiles and end up crucifying them if he really returns. So this was them testing the waters. A small showing of Mephiles, something they would NEVER have done a decade ago. A tiny cameo to see how people will react. And given the overwhelmingly positive reception this one scene has gotten... I highly doubt this is the last time we will see Mephiles in Sonic.

I agree as despite Sonic 06 for the time being said to be the worst game (that title now belongs to Sonic Boom games) people nowadays do realize their is a good game underneath all the mess that everyone noticed. So a remake could redeem it. Also with how the Sonic remakes have been adding stuff to help freshen it up, I think they could add an extra seperate story mode that lets you play as Mephiles.
About the inhibitor rings, Gerald says in some optional dialogue that with the doom powers Shadow is overflowing with power to the point that if he took of the inhibitor rings he’d probably explode.

I think the best thing that could happen if Mephiles gets restored to the timeline is if he ultimately wins in the next game. And then, the next-next game would be a continuation for how to defeat him and fix the main Sonic universe. Basically Mephiles would be like Thanos and would win in the first game, just like Thanos did in Infinity War. But then, the heroes would make a comeback in the second game and defeat Mephiles, just like how the Avengers restored the population of the entire universe and defeated Thanos in Endgame.
Or hell, I think it'd be neat if Mephiles had a heel-face turn (or at least an "enemy mine" scenario) wgere he helps take on a big enemy

Here's an idea for Mephiles returning:
-The Time Eater's actions during Sonic Generations sent ripples through spacetime. Upon their creation, these ripples are so small that they cannot be detected, thus they escaped Eggman's notice. However, they eventually grow and become more and more tangible, capable of creating portals in time.
During the events of '06, Mephiles encountered one of these ripples by chance, not as a portal, but a window through time. Through this, Mephiles foresaw his coming demise. Mephiles did everything he could to keep this time window a secret, and once it grew large enough to become a portal, he sent one of his clones through it into the future. If Mephiles won, that clone would just be another addition to his army. If Mephiles failed, the clone would carry out his will and begin his plan all over again.
This clone of Mephiles could serve as one of the antagonists of a future installment, if not the main villain. The one who sets the events of the story in motion.

Funnily enough, Mephiles is the most likely villain to escape from Shadow Generations. He can already travel through time with no additional aid so all he would need to know is that this is a different Shadow than the one he fought before and he could easily use his abilities to escape into White Space and follow Shadow. His dialogue seems to indicate that he already knew everything and that something was blocking him from doing that unless he supposedly defeated Shadow. The big question is where he got that idea from? Did he already try? Did somebody else visit him? Or does he know something we don’t about the boss arenas?

So one idea I have for Mephiles returning is that at the end of Sonic Generations both present and past Eggman are shown to still be trapped in White Space and they kind of just… pop back up in their respective timelines without a real explanation… so with that in mind, what if in their search for an exit, they come across Mephiles in his prison and make a deal with him where in exchange for getting them back to their proper timelines, they will free Mephiles and allow him to return to the timeline
That's my exact theory as Mephiles is half of a time god, a place like white space should be easy for him to break out of if he isn't trapped in the scepter of darkness.

I think at the end of his boss fight after shadow kicked him into the purple goo Mephiles swaped himself out for one of his clones and that clone is what got sealed away and the real Mephiles was able to slip away and escape the cave and could sneak to the main timeline.

I like to headcanon that all of the goop you use Doom Morph in is actually Mephiles’. Not just the goop in his boss fight. Implying that he’s actively been trying to re-enter the timeline, managing to get his goop in both White Space and Chaos Island. The thing about Mephiles is that he shouldn't return. He can't die (plus with the whole time thing he may actually be a time paradox), so the only way he can be defeated is by ceasing to exist. The only way he loses is by being forgotten, and that becomes more canon with every game he's not in. Don't get me wrong tho, he was the show stealer in Generations and I love that for him
Even though Black Doom is ultimately why Shadow prevailed, it’s kind of funny since Doom is child’s play compared to Mephiles.
He kinda reminds me of villains like The Lich from adventure time, creepy serious ones in children shows.
A cool return for him would be in the 5th Sonic Movie where he actually Wins like an infinity war thing, setting up for Sonic 6 to introduce Silver and that whole ordeal where it's just history repeating itself with a few differences. The Time Eater had to pull Crisis City, Kingdom Vally, and Mephilis from somewhere, right? So some small remit of that 06 timeline must exist.
Plus I think the Time Eater itself is a remint of Mephilis. Both are purple gas-like blobs that have the power to manipulate time. The difference is that the Time Eater is much weaker and is incomplete. Eggman did say it was in a primordial form when he first encountered it.

In the past, Mephiles liked to toy with Shadow, messing with his mind and allegiances through thought provoking speeches. He liked to draw out his encounters with him. This time around, he tries to kill Shadow immediately without hesitation! I think this speaks volumes to how desperate Mephiles is. In the past, Mephiles was pretty close to untouchable. Always in control. Now that he's spent god knows how long trapped in limbo after Solaris was defeated...I think the reality that he's not actually invincible has set in. This version of Mephiles has a new priority. To simply EXIST!!!
I really wish they would remake Sonic 06. They clearly still have some love for it. Also I'd like to point out that Shadow not releasing the inhibitor rings is similar to Sonic facing Perfect Chaos without the emeralds. The experience increase they've both had at this point have given them an edge they didn't have before.

IF Mephiles returned, it would likely be due to a new time-related fight or something that can shatter the fabric if even for a moment. Maybe the defeat of the Time Eater after using the flaming move could've opened a rift in time for Mephiles to escape some time into the future with, especially with how the Time Eater's core was destroyed in the end of the fight.

The character could come back in that timeline, or appear in the main canon timeline from the sonic mania / it's sonic superstars, timeline, because we know that's a possibility, because we've seen it happen with classic sonic and sonic forces

Naw Mephiles should just stay dead. He served his purpose of trying to manipulate Shadow into joining him but failed cuz Shadow knows who he is. It’s cool he came back in Gens but I think his moment for that game was a perfect way to conclude his writing n dialogue towards Shadow. He went from being the guy who knows how to control the game to being nothing but a pushover for Shadow. Bringing back Shadow was ok since Sonic Team could just continue his arc of protecting Earth for Maria while also just try to find his own happiness. Mephiles, he’s the embodiment of evil so there’s no redeeming him or any real way to make him interesting. What could Sonic Team really do to make Mephiles interesting? Shadow doesn’t even remember him n even if he did, Mephiles was just an obstacle that Shadow overcome. Plus Mephiles interaction with other characters ain’t that interesting since he is just busy gaslighting Silver n barely interact with other characters. Only moment where he shine was trying to manipulate Shadow which he can’t used that card anymore. They could bring Mephiles back if 06 remake becomes true but for new games, I think Shadow is better off facing new foes rather than face old ones again

If Mephiles will comeback, i want this to be in a Silver game, here's why:
1.Silver vs Mephiles, if made the final battle where Mephiles will ever come back, would be the best fight to put him in, because it would also help Silver to have a character development.
Maybe, if they will do so, Mephiles will make him remember everything that happened in 06 (except that famous moment, yk what i'm talkin about)
2. Silver, from an easy to manipulate and naive hedgehog would grow out to be more confident, even tho this won't have to change his entire personality
3. Since his debut in 06, Silver never had his chance to shine, as we all know, so if he will have one (probably in 2027), i think Sega must face what happened in 2006 once and for all with a game featuring Silver as the protagonist and Mephiles as the antagonist of the story, they will completely do justice to Silver after 22 years and they would make a great ending for Mephiles, by Silver facing him as a chance to improve himself
I hope Sega will make this come true in the future, because after all, by hoping is to make a better future, and i'm sure Sega will finally give Silver the future he deserves

My thoughts on Mephiles returning: Right now, he is a force to be reckoned with, and you can play that fear factor up a ton, but there's a limit before it becomes stale. In my opinion, he only has one major return to be properly evil, and if he comes back again after that it'll seem like they're running out of ideas. I propose that he not be a Big Bad like Eggman, or even a character like Metal Sonic who works in small doses, but instead he is granted a "realm" to exist in safely, as compromise. Perhaps even a sort of reformation is possible, though something as truly evil as he is will never be strictly speaking GOOD.
As for the how, it's pretty simple. Since he was brought back by Time Eater in the first place, the events obviously weren't so thoroughly erased that no one could bring them back, they were more likely just "covered" with a "time blanket" or something. It'd take a single person who remembers, even just a random human, to try to build a time machine or a chaos reversal chamber or some other dodad and he'd just punch a hole into that forgotten and banished timeline. Perhaps, from there, Mephiles could go back to his more calm, collected, spooky tone, knowing that there is a chance for escape from his limbo of life.
Such a shame Robbie was not met with good reception just for not being Dan Green. Robbie deserved better than what the Sonic fandom gave him.

It's also poetic in that you could easily say he's the reprisentation of his home game, Sonic 06, and how it by extension is utterly rejected and disowned by the fans, franchise, and story unianimously as a rejected concept. It's insanely meta even within the confines of the plot of Sonic 06, writers wrote in an ending that wrote off Sonic 06. Wow! Call it a reach but I'd say that's a great way of executing a mistake as a work of art.

Silver in Generations needs a story now, after knowing why shadow wasn't at Sonic's birthday and having a rival battle in sonic generations and a cutscenes in shadow generations now we understand why shadow wasn't in the first cutscenes of Sonic's birthday just to find answers from his past on the space colony ark, now I'm questioning on Silver because wasn't at Sonic's birthday in the first cutscene and you rival battle him in Sonic generation and the last cutscene at Sonic's birthday shadow shows up right by Silver talking to each other, so Silver had to be fighting Iblis in the base game and not showing us because crisis city is in the base game too along with Silver fighting you and the final battle cutscene with the time eater Silver randomly cheering sonic on for the big fight and the writer changed shadow's "you got this sonic" to "on your feet" which means Silver needs a campaign and dialog changed because he fought sonic just like shadow did so Silver would be like " IT'S NO USE, I know you can do better" or something like that sorry for ranting heh shadow is my favorite character and right beside him is Silver

Time Eater doesn't seem to have a will of it's own. Eggman wouldn't know about Mephilis either so seems unlikely either of them intentionally hid him. It may be a manifestation of the 06 timeline. Eggman and maybe Doom could have unwittingly cracked his prison of sorts.

When it comes to characters returning, it is often only a matter of how much people want to see it. If people want it enough, a writer can find some BS to make it happen. Just look at every comic villain that came back due to popularity.
In the past, the main reason Mephiles would NEVER return was not because his timeline got erased. But because 06 was such a memed failure that Team Sonic wanted to forget about it. Pretend it never happened. It was the Star Wars Prequels of Sonic.
But... much like the Star Wars prequels, over the years, fans began to appreciate the good in 06. Recognising it as the rough draft of a game that could have been good. And Mephiles in particular has gone from "Dumb edgelord villain" to being praised as one of Sonic's best villains. Type "Mephiles" in the you tube search and the first things you see are essays calling him an amazing villain
And I think Sega has taken notice. They've seen the interest, but... they're also cautious. They got burned before. What if this is just some vocal minority and most Sonic Fans actually still hate Mephiles and end up crucifying them if he really returns.
So this was them testing the waters. A small showing of Mephiles, something they would NEVER have done a decade ago. A tiny cameo to see how people will react.
