  • This is an Me109G-2 Trop of III./JG 77, the "Trop" signifying it was designed to operate in the extreme heat of North Africa or the Mediterranean. Jagdgeschwader 77 Herz Ass ("Ace of Hearts") served in every front at some stage of WWII, but III./JG 77 arrived in North Africa in October 1942. The wing saw extensive combat against the Desert Air Force, and many aces added to their impressive tallies, with a total of 333 aerial victories recorded. The aircraft model itself is superbly produced and finished, painted in a desert camouflage scheme. To make this model unique, the Me109G-2 comes mounted on a compass platform, a special piece of equipment designed to raise the tail of an aircraft to allow it to test its guns on the ground. The diorama base with this special ramp and realistic looking desert landscape makes this an awesome set to get your hands on for sure!!!
    Today's example is from Dragon Wings. It is 1:72nd scale and made of diecast with plastic accessories. The model is of the Messerschmitt Bf 109G-2 from Luftwaffe 8./JG 77, "Black 6" as flown by Heinz Ludemann, Gambut, Libya, November 1942, with Compass Platform Display Base.

    What an imaginative model and diorama base- a great addition and also one which shows a different aspect of the air war.

      @@peterhewson3216 haha yes definately has an addiction feel to it 🤣. That's been my whole life problem,haha. I had models then next minute had over 500 unmade kits, sold them to get into classic muscle cars. 10 later had 9 cars in various condition, then have sold most of them and now back into military stuff again but diecast.. and we'll we see what's happening now,haha. WOW!!! An amazing model, and an amazing aircraft with an amazing history. Too bad there is no swastika. About the diorama: it's great, but I didn't understand the purpose of that mechanism?

    • @peterhewson3216
      @peterhewson3216 3 месяца назад +2

      Its for swinging the compass to identify and correct any deviations which may have developed.

    • @heavymetaldiecast
      @heavymetaldiecast  3 месяца назад +1

      @@slizevicius yes it's pretty cool hey. As what Peter said, it was used for instrument testing, compass calibrations and also used for gun sighting without the need get the aircraft into the air. The allies had them aswell. These ones were powered but I recall seeing an English one that was manually moved with 2 big poles. 😀👍

      @@heavymetaldiecast Didn't know that. Then it really is a great diorama. I wonder why other manufacturers don't make dioramas. But Dragon production, they are amazing.

    I love this only that big bar on the diorama looks interesting but is not realistic for my liking if I had this model diorama I would not have that big bar on it and instead put figures and maybe a German vehicle or 2 👍

    • @heavymetaldiecast
      @heavymetaldiecast  3 месяца назад +1

      @@SniperDash That would look nice too. But the real purpose of these platforms was aircraft testing. The bar is necessary to lift the aircraft into positions used when testing or calibration. 😀 Thanks for checking out the video and sharing your thoughts 😀👍

      @@avgjoeavglife To occupy man child's like myself 🤣. But in reality I think the compass platforms were used for testing instruments etc and gun sighting without the need to get the aircraft into the air. I guess the rotation of it was used for when testing the aircraft internal compass is working correctly. But for me it allows me to spin the plane around without touching it,haha
