  • Dragon Age Inquisition is one of the most successfull games released by BioWare, and it went on to win Game of the Year in 2014. Its development was not without difficulty however, and like with any other game, there are some things that did not make it into the final cut.
If you're curious about what could have been, you're in the right place! Get yourself a nice cup of tea (or coffee!) and let me tell you all about the content that was cut from Dragon Age Inquisition! + A bit about its development. :)

I’m really sad that Inquisition never really got a true beginning like Origins. I know that the race you pick tells you the character’s background but I would’ve absolutely loved the starting mission to be arriving at the temple with your small team of your chosen background and mingle a bit with some characters before the main game starts.

As much as I hated that it wasn't like that. I like the mechanism of how they implemented your amnesia and all you had to go off of was people's speculation, unraveling the truth as we go. I'd have loved an origins style beginning but looking at the way the story went, I'm glad it didn't have that kind of beginning as I don't think it would have worked as well here.

    • @JuulietPod
      @JuulietPod Год назад +1

It truly could've been as simple as a short conversation with one person from your background in the Conclave, then listening in on a single scene of a heated debate between Divine Justinia, the mages, and templars that would set up the foundation of the conflict. A magic orb flies out of nowhere at the crescendo of the debate and you grab it as it explodes.
For an Adaar you chat with a Valo-Kas mercenary buddy before standing at attention. Cadash and Lavellan speak with whomever their contact is before peeking out from the rafters. Finally the Trevelyan's could speak with the head representative of the side they find themselves on before convening.
Easier said than done, but the amnesia was totally unnecessary when the story very much could've started three minutes earlier.

I hated how every background tries to force you down the good guy path
choosing the qunari? well you aren't really part of the qun
choosing an elven supremist? well you are actually a clan of tolerant elves
choosing a dwarf? barely any dwarfs in the relevant story
seriously my self made character background in my head cannon made playing DAI way more fun in terms of roleplay (human hating elve assassin gets send to kill the divine to renew the sort of human civil war but gets one upped by corypheus, gets proclaimed a religious leader against her will and now tries her best to incite as much unrest as possible while still having to stop corypheus and being watched to close to just bail)

I'm not surprised it was created with Human PCs only in mind. Especially when playing as an Elven Inquisitor during the Temple of Mythal quest. We get tidbits in the bigger scenes, but Morrigan acts like she knows more of Elven culture than us through the entire game, and literally explains what the Temple of Mythal is like I don't have "property of mythal" tattooed on my face 😭

    • @LisaLynnsTavern

Well as a dalish inquisitor is always funny to bring Sera along "elfy stuff"
      "Gillanan... Ass"
But seriously i could buy Morgan knowing more about the elf than the dalish themselves.. the dalish have little written and pass a lot via oral tradition, most clans are isolated and even those that still meet are basically playing telephone with each others..
Even the Keepers prefer to destroy old relics they don't know or understand like the eluvians..

    • @emackenzie

@@andrews.5212 I can understand her knowing _some_ things that the Dalish PC doesn't, but the evanuris are one of the only things the Dalish do (generally) know for themselves. I think the ending would have been a lot more well-received if Corypheus had attacked Skyhold, especially if all the decisions we made about how to build the Inquisition played into the final battle. As it is, I think a lot of us felt like the ending lacked some punch - like, his final plan is to try his first plan again? The one that already didn't work even when he had the Anchor? Come on, that's just sad.
I do think that the Trespasser DLC finished the story with an appropriate bang, though.

    • @LisaLynnsTavern
      @LisaLynnsTavern  2 года назад +21

I agree. It would have felt like there was more at stake. And now that you mention our desicions in building the Inquisition, the suicide mission from Mass Effect 2 comes to mind, where your actions affect who lives and dies. The way you build the Inquisition and how you upgraded Skyhold would've had an effect on the final battle.
Oh yeah the Trespasser DLC was great 😄 It's my favourite DLC to be honest. I feel like Trespasser is BioWare at their best

    • @butterysnail2537
      @butterysnail2537 Год назад +3

to be honest my biggest story criticism of the entire game is that corypheus is such a lame villain. he never accomplishes anything meaningful after the inquisitor steps in. he fails to take over Orlais, fails to bring in the wardens and make his demon army, fails to access the well of sorrows or even get into the Eluvian, and then just kind of randomly tries opening the breach again out of desperation in the end
compare that to the Darkspawn from origins who basically had you beaten out at every turn thanks to loghain and you only barely manage to squeak a victory out by building allies from the sidelines while the horde destroys the entire country around you
whereas corypheus just destroys haven. that's like the one setback he causes in the entire story after the prologue. and he even fails at killing any of the inquisition's leadership like he planned to. a skyhold attack would have been a cool idea to at least give the impression he's competent enough to scheme anything
      what a lame dude

Where once the Inquisitor comes out of the interrogation, a whole sworm of people start to yell and scream at them to the point where one of the hecklers throws a rock at the Inquisitor that Cassandra had to apprehend him. The Inquisitor becoming the Divine is a massive missed opportunity. I remember way back when I was binging the series in preparation for Inquisition being extremely excited about Morrigan's words at the end of her DLC in Origins about a big change coming to the world and also there was all that hype of the Chantry being wiped out of by the Elder One (we only had theories about him being Corypheus back then). And that is not even talking about the mage revolution, the civil war in Orlais or Briala's elven uprising... everything seemed like a melting pot for a turning point in the history of Thedas yet by the end of Inquisition what we got was essentially a restoration of the status quo. To this day I think it's conclusion to be one of the biggest experiences in "blue balls" I had with gaming lol
I believe the Inquisitor becoming the Divine would work in being one of the possible big changes in Thedas either that or finally letting the Chantry and the system of Templars and Circles die, replacing it with a more secular Inquisition.

Oh yeah I totally see what you mean haha, the whole mage vs templar was was resolved way too quickly and way too easily. I didn't really mind it too much when I first played DAI, tbh I was more confused about who Corypheus was and why Varric knew all about him because I didn't have the Legacy DLC at the time. 😆 I played all three games back to back because I discovered the series kind of late, so maybe my experience would've been different if I had been waiting for Inquisition to release.
Though now with Dreadwolf it seems shit's really gonna go down...but we'll see haha. Either way it's fun to be in the fandom and be hyped for the next game (despite the long wait lol)
I do wonder what it would've been like with our Inquisitor as Divine. I wonder if the end slides with an Inquisitor as Divine would've been different based on how they judged people at Skyhold. And probably also the choices you made throughout the rest of the game

While it sounds great narratively, an attack on Skyhold like the attack on Haven would have meant designing the skyhold locations for combat: Big, open, visually-undistracting combat zones, with the hallways and offices being either off-limits or artificially larger and blander throughout. Something like the library would have been impossible in battle.

Controversial or not, divine inquisitor would’ve been a wonderful option. To outright say what you want to do with Templars and mages would’ve fixed a lot of the problems that are implied with asking for help closing the breach and who you end up with as divine and the loss of context about what they do as divine. As cool as the decision is in the base game, I just can’t comprehend the technicalities of Vivienne’s decisions as divine and same with Leliana’s free mages; we don’t really see how any of that turns out and nobody outright says anything about it.
To add to the (minor) issues with trespasser, if Fiona is a free mage either through earning the circle’s trust with Vivienne or Leliana’s liberation, why wouldn’t she show up to discuss things with us or the elected divine? The fact that Vivienne and Fiona start rivalling circles is very confusing.

Another piece of cut content I stumbled across when trying to mod the game is that you were originally supposed to go to the Grand Cathedral, which was most likely part of the pre-COTJ templar plot as a mirror to the pre-IHW Redcliffe part of the mage plot. There are references to the Grand Cathedral in relation to the COTJ plot, and Knight-Captain Denam's in-code description mentions that he guards the Grand Cathedral and won't let you in. I am very bummed that this didn't make it into the final cut, especially since it would likely have meant more characterization for Knight-Captain Denam, who got very little characterization and not even as much as a backstory.

In the base game the Inquistor can feel apart from the world instead of in it and I feel that this could've made it so much better.

However I'm now aware there is also another Jason Shreier article (which came out later) that says it was actually an initiative led by former EA executive Patrick Söderlund to get all of their studios to use Frostbite, so I wouldn't be surprised if it actually was forced upon them. Also think that Cole's third option would've actually been more interesting. We don't get enough opportunities for party members to turn on you like in Origins. They just begrudgingly put up with your shit. Iron Bull's arm canon should definitely be an Inky thing next game, even if we only see the inquisitor very rarely. Also Bioware using the same engine as another EA game is quite interesting, I wonder if that is another mess that EA made in an effort to use in-house stuff (so to speak) to maybe keep costs down thus turn more of a profit? But I'm glad they pushed it back a year, the 'Human Only' didn't really go down that well for DA2 after the awesomeness that is Origins.
Hopefully EA loosing the sole rights to the Star Wars games will be a kick to their ego and will let Bioware take their time with DA4/Dreadwolf.

Despite all of the technical difficulties that they faced, Frostbite does have a lot of strengths as well.
Yeah I hope so too! I just want them to take all the time they need haha, we've already waited so long, I don't mind waiting a couple of years more if it means a better game. xD Also, the fact that it's going to be fully singleplayer means that EA hopefully learned their lesson and realise that yes, people still do love good singleplayer games!

On the first act, we crush half of his army in a single blow, in the second, we deal with his influence in Thedas politics, he them would've attacked Skyhold, but this time without success, now with no army, no influence, he would do the only thing left, to summon the darkspawn through his dragon, so we'd get a main mission in Orzammar, some new quests on the Storm Coast and Crestwood, and another main mission somewhere else in Orlais or the Free Marches (I'd prefer the later), not big, just to deal with a Darkspawn Horde on one and one of those darkspawn broodmother, then we'd proceed to Haven Again.

    Very interesting.
I have to begin saying that for me Inquisition is a game that failed to deliver, I loved DAO and DA2, and Inquisition simply didn't click that much with me.
Some the many reasons are the Story, the companions, many of the mechanics, and the Protagonist itself, I totally felt connected with my Mage Warden and my Hawke, but the Inquisitior was just so bland and boring for me. Still, I don't think Inquisition is overall a bad game, just kind of mediocre.
I find more interesting the Architect version of Here Lies the Abyss than the one we got (and that quest was one of the few parts of the story that I liked). But I still think that the Hero of Ferelden (or the Orlesian Warden) should had been the Warden character that joined you for that mission.
I am curious about the Wicked Eyes Wicked Hearts different versions, because I loathe the one we got for completely.
I am also curious about the third option with Cole, I would have also liked to see the option were Corypheus controlled him, but that's me, because overall I don't like Cole 😂 (the last playthrough I didn't even recruit him anymore). Corypheus is not even hard compared to his DA2 fight, so having 3 characters wasn't much of a problem.

and also it would have basically made the choice between the warden commander or hawke a real no brainer who do you want to save the person who saved the world or" just some champion of a city", and add to the fact many players worship the ground the Hero of Ferelden walks which would make the choice rather too one sided.
in all honestly i was never much connected to Hero of Ferelden or most and i think if dragon age 2 got the time it needed it would have rivaled origins in fans and approval

A lot of things get cut due to budget or time constraints etc, I'm sure the devs aren't happy when they have to cut things, but unfortunately that's something that has to happen eventually
We'll have to wait and see what DA4 will be like. I'm excited for it, but if you feel like you're done with DA that's totally fine, there's so many other good games out there! 😄

The game was initially pitched as being a direct continuation of dragon age 2, where you would have played as hawke again.this was changed after the backlash of 2.

morrigan explaining everything to a dalish inquisitor is such an ick for me i can’t even begin to explain. it would’ve looked a lot better if in some scenes instead of morrigan inquisitor would explain things or translated some phrases that are written in the temple of mythal. like, come on, it’s that easy!!! i really like morrigan, but girl, do you really think you know more about dalish gods and culture than a dalish inquisitor, or formerly even clan’s first, if you play as a mage. WHO ARE LITERALLY NEXT TO KEEPERS IN PRESERVING ELVEN LANGUAGE AND LORE. and the scene when it is decided who is going to take a dive in a well of sorrows just infuriates me. like is that even a question, especially when you play as a dalish and morrigan says she is better suited to use the knowledge of the well. just no.

Yeah, it's silly. I agree it would've been great to have a Dalish Inquisitor be able to say ''umm yeah thank you Morrigan but look at me, see my Vallaslin? Yeah, I'm Dalish. I know this shit.'' Love to see Morrigan and Solas bicker about the Elven Gods though, Solas just wanting to tell her she's wrong but can't because he'll give himself away if he does. xD

I thought the Solas section also deserved the mention of he was supposed to be bisexual, has recorded lines and everything, but they cut that out in the end

    • @LisaLynnsTavern

I actually almost added that part in, but when I looked into it I found a tweet in which someone asked Patrick Weekes if they had intended to write Solas as bi but were unable to due to lack of time/budget, to which Patrick replied:
      twitter.com/patrickweekes/status/646891965045448708?lang=en
So from what I'm getting from this, is that they just didn't intend for him to be bi, or that they decided against it for the reason stated in the tweet. I did also find the recorded lines, however I've read that apparently BioWare has both their female and male protagonists voice actors record all romance lines, regardless of whether they'll be used in game or not. Which would make sense I guess, I know there is a video where you can hear a male Hawke say female Hawke lines. Because of all of this I was just really torn and because I didn't find a direct or source (as in like from the devs or an interview) that said Solas was actually intended to be bi, I decided to not include it. Though there's a chance I might've missed something, so if there's a source out there make sure to let me know 👀

Bioware should have cut the multiplayer. The pc divine should have been for only human female, like the human noble only can king/queen. I would have wanted to play only human with a deeper personal story for the inquistor.
P.S. I like playing as an other race but dragon age 2 and Inquisition really didn't fit the story with different races.

Thats not why Bioware picked Frostbite. They picked it because EA forced them.

See, that is what I thought, but after reading more about, it seems it was BioWare themselves (or at least their executives) that wanted to use Frostbite. While the engine caused a lot of problems, it does have its strengths

I can't help but really dislike Inquisition in retrospect. It felt very out of touch with the previous two games. It's sad that the one game in the series I think is worth skipping is the biggest one
