The terrifying thing is that the "big line go up" method of thinking is hardly endemic to corporations. Governments play that game far more often than I think people are willing to comfortably admit, even without any form of corporate cronyism.
"bigger number good" is the driving force behind the last 300 years of industrial capitalist war and pain across the world. you have the beginnings of an understanding of why the world is the way it is, which is good, but you fail to see that that's whats been driving the system the entire time. the only thing that's changed is the scope, where once capitalism could thrive by preying on resources from other cultures and third world imperialism, now the whole world is industrialized, everyone's playing the game. it was always gonna get to this point and thats why capitalism is the recipe for the entropy johnny talks about. capitalism IS greed. and as the other commenter pointed out, the governments of the world are just as much at fault for their hand in upholding the system, and oftentimes are directly complicit as our politicians are bought out either publicly via lobbying or privately via corruption.
He says it's not because capitalism is a thorn in his side...but he's either lying to himself or to you. Capitalism IS a thorn in his side. Capitalism is what birthed megacorps and led us to this point. That's not up for debate, that's what happened. Cyberpunk as a genre is fundamentally anti-capitalist and mocks capitalism nearly every chance it gets. The Cyberpunk genre, Mike Pondsmith and Johnny Silverhand all warned us.
I imagine he says this as an implicit way of saying "not like i'm a communist or anything like that", but I imagine, at the same time, that Johnny, like many today, say that precisely because they don't know what communism is or what it is about. They think of that word and imagine the caricature, popularized on the common sense today, of what communism is. That means Johnny thinks and acts like a communist/anarchist without ever having contact with one. He and many more keep gravitating against the capitalist system, not because they were convinced by political speeches, but because the system works like a human meat grinder every day, consuming Johnny and others like him, and yet, trying to make them accept this fate willingly. Even if names like Marx, Bakunin, Che and others alike could somehow have long been forgoten in the cyberpunk world, history will keep prducing new Marxs and new Bakunins, new rebels, revolutionaries, dissidents, terrorists. They are the cristalization of the agony suffered by the people, they are the teeth of the working class constantly trying to bite back, and one day, those teeth will inevitably sink deep into the heart of their opressors.

I think this is a misapplication. Capitalism is economics in nature, while something like communism is politics. Cyberpunk is more about the excesses, and the overuse of technology damages the human spirit. It's more of a pondering question of ethics and morality.
@@ManontheHill2099 That's not true at all. Capitalism and communism are both economic systems. It's not "nature". Capitalism is hierarchical by design. Communism is moneyless, stateless and classless. @ThunderTheBlackShadowKitty Respectfully, I disagree. Communism is political in nature that seeks to forcibly direct the market and all of society while capitalism is simply a method of a market (Though I digress, that is a different rabbit hole and I want to be concise) The exploitation via big corporations and lazefaire, as you brought up is more a symptom and not the cause of what is a profoundly spiritual dilemma. The inequality you bring is always going to be around, that's part of the human experience, the question is, how should one conduct themselves and ( as it relates to cyberpunk as a genre) how does the overreliance and application of this technology affect humanity.
