I am 67 and have been running since I was 18, went to college in Oregon and everyone was running, so why not. I have never had to take time off due to any injury. The only time I took time off was after my son was born 42 years ago. Have done countless marathons and Ironmans. The only time I had an injury was when I played tennis. I am currently training for my 4th 100 mile ultra race. I will never stop because running is my therapist and my church, plus I think my body is able to handle the miles.

I was a competitive runner from age 16 til 50. Osteoarthritis killed my running sadly. I really miss it. In 34 years of running let me share a few things to hopefully keep you running longer:
      1) lean body mass is very important. You need to stay lightweight to keep the impact forces on your joints low. In fact nobody over 180lbs should be running after age 40 (I was). Lose the weight.
      2) lift weights. Not to get big but to get strong. posterior chain and back work is really important. Your running form will improve almost immediately when you do some glute strengthening work and lower and upper back strengthening.
      3) Active rest: you don't have to run every day. On your recovery days do a bike ride or pool run or swim. Give your 50 year old body a break. But when you do run make it count, do hard workouts.
      4) have fun. running is one of the best antidepressants out there.

It can be frustrating at times because when I was younger I was into everything, including running. But health issues unrelated to fitness levels can attack anyone, anytime. I've watched much younger, super fit running friends suddenly be struck down so it made me realise the need to stay happy & not begrudge my health & do what I can for myself within my own physical capability. @@cjhoward409 Do you live in an area with only flat land? Walking or running has some benefits that the treadmill can't give you, esp. if some of your run is on uneven surfaces, as the treadmill's pace only varies if you change it. Also, our brains are wired so that we are used to moving through the landscape, whereas, on a treadmill our legs are moving, but our brain does not see the landscape move. Some scientists suggest that too much treadmill training can actually make normal locomotion feel unnatural. If you can, it is a good idea to find some variable terrain, even if you stay on a fairly smooth path, and go up and downhill. Of course, the treadmill is a useful tool if you can't find such terrain. If you vary the length and steepness of hills (and if you are careful coming down) you will find that this will work "everywhere" as effectively as (if not more than) the treadmill.

@TheRozylass. If you have never been a runner, does that mean you have never run or that you have tried it and didn't like it? These exercises are good, but they don't affect the body in the same way as a steady state run. If you don't wish to run, you can get the same benefits from cycling, swimming or even walking. The only thing walking cannot do is give you the same stimulus as a very fast run - but that should not be the major part of your training in any case. A good walk and some occasional hill climbs can give you a lot of the same benefits as running. Hill walks can work the same muscles as lunges, etc. and with the benefit that you are getting somewhere and seeing the sights.

I started running late in life. Did my first half marathon for my 50th birthday. But my knees eventually deteriorated. I had an orthopedic doctor tell me I was bone on bone and would never run again. I has a small surgery to clean up my right (injured) knee and began these kinds of workouts. These are excellent and at 63 I incorporate these exercises and continue to workout every day aerobic and weight training. But, I really miss running, that feeling cannot be replaced by bike rides, swimming or anything else. But at least I can still walk, pretty fast too, for 5 miles. For everyone who loves how their body feels in motion I hope you never give up! ❣️

The human body has been “engineered” for running, an activity every child knows well. Later, our lifestyle makes us abandon this practice so that, once grown up, we don’t know anymore how to run. Still running, as long as it is done correctly, can have a very big positive impact on our health. Running should not be replaced but helped.

I agree! I have ADHD and running are my "meds!". The shoes make all the difference in regards to your impact and many RUclips videos help with form. Maybe just rephrase the title to say, "if you want an alternative to running". I hate negative comments but like to point out when things don't seem right...:(

Must try these. Last time I ran I tore a ligament on my back. (Probably waiting to go according the physio. Longish story).
But I now have a laterally tilted pelvis that I keep trying to stretch back into place. The lunges look like they might help.

These are good alternatives I might try to give my old joints a break now and again.
The thing is, as far as I understand, recent research has concluded that the old "high impact is bad for your joints" way of thinking is misguided. In moderation, high impact exercise like jogging and running is actually good for your joints-- just be careful not to overdue it or hurt yourself!

Thanks for the video. Since I'm overweight and out of shape and sometimes feel like I've throw out my ankle when I run, I might try these out. Still, if someone doesn't have weight or joint issues, wouldn't it be better for them to walk or run and then do some side shuffling and planks? Seems like the exercises you demonstrated wouldn't do as good a job of stressing and training the muscles as walking/running, fast shuffling and then planks or weights or yoga for core and limb strength.

    • @1234cheerful
      @1234cheerful 9 месяцев назад

with no issues, maybe it would. And you might find that over time you build your ankle up so you don't have that problem, or not as much. But these do train the muscles, as he shows what NOT to do in setting up so your form is good and you get the best benefit. I think his concern is that running can cause joint issues for some people, if their form is off or they actually have an imbalance like favoring one leg ever so slightly over another over the years, or they have run on unfriendly surfaces.

I, unfortunately, had to stop running due to exertion migraines. I had been in sports my entire life and exercise was my go-to for everything. I miss running and hard exercises so much and pray that one day, I will be able to get back it again. But until then, exercises like these will help me to be able to do some sort of exercise without a debilitating migraine attack afterward. I even have to be careful with these, though, because planks also cause me to have migraines.

@davidhartley6232 - get outside, if you can and if it's safe. Walking on the ground, even for a short distance at first, is going to get you used to shifting weight over imperfect terrain better than a treadmill with a set speed. Even on the flat, most outdoor routes are not absolutely even, unless you are on a designed running track. Going uphill can introduce other factors apart from the measured incline - road surfaces and even paths/sidewalks can have a camber/incline across the hill as well as the downward slope. Even if you intend to walk mostly flat routes, mixed terrain and learning to balance your bodyweight without thinking about it will help when you also have to compensate for the movement of a heavy backpack.
As a person with cerebral palsy, which impacts my balance and gait, I found that including "fartlek" in my walking improved my agility and balance more than anything else. Although most people think of fartlek only in terms of speed-play - fast and slow intervals, I encountered it in terms of running on varied terrain, through sand or through woods, where the terrain would naturally impact running speed. In my case, it meant switching from the pavement (in the UK, the "pavement" is the sidewalk) and onto the grass verge or cutting across the corner of a field and then back onto the road. I was also fortunate to grow up in a hilly area with differing degrees and lengths of incline.

@@charleshayes2528 I appreciate your response 🤗 Thank you.
      Two things against me:
      1. I live on the PNW coast, making a over half the year difficult to get outdoors with significant soaking to the bone.
      2. A few years ago a homeless handout center was opened up just a city block away, turning the whole area into a crime-ridden area 😡 😢, and making the beloved trails right behind the apartment complex extremely unsafe.
I still try to get out and "touch grass" when I can. It's just not as often as I would like or should be 😢

Don't go all that low for a few months as you strengthen your thighs. if you have a couple of 5 pound weights, once you get the basic movement, hold them with your arms straight down to increase the load a bit.

Sorry but running is just about the best exercise that anyone can do. 1) being outside in the fresh air is quite simply invaluable for human mental and overall health. 2) running maintains back, knee and hip mobility which is crucial as people age. Please don’t discourage running, full mobility with age is more important than when younger.
