Totally agree! Plus, Amazing display Piece!! Would You keep it as a Shipwrench or as the Black Seas Barracuda with the rest of the Island as two separate sets?
I think you have to remember that this was suppose to be originally ans island set only. The fact we will get a bonus to put together the barracuda is a great bonus. There is nothing that sucks to take a few extra minutes for the bonus addition and hey...out the extra pieces in a ziplock and sails in between the pages of the instruction and out it in the box.
I completely agree Jung Jin Lee. Plus you could always build the ship and use your other Legos to complete the island and make it look great too. Very cool set.
I highly disagree with your cons. Especially on the usefulness of the island after the ship is built. I think it encourages the creativity of the builder to design their own cool looking islands based on the parts and greenery they have to make it much more appealing whether for display or to play. It’s so genius that they are allowing us to take this already awesome set, and go the extra mile to allow us to reassemble the crashed ship. I feel you are being a little too closed-minded about this set, but also I have yet to build it. I look forward to getting this set when it comes out
if i buy this set i will only use the ship and use the island as a dock or warzone, or i can use my own peces to make a battle zone and it would be awesome!!!!!
I completely AGREE but I will say that the island doesn't look that good without the ship but you could totally use the extra pieces to deck out the island.
lol on top of that.... IT IS LEGO! Just stick them somewhere around the place and I am sure they will be of no intrusion or ugly to look at. Also, when he got the "extra" pieces of vegetation off the ship, he could have put them creatively back on the "bare" island and dress it up more. I know they could have done something cooler with that part of the set, but, again... IT IS LEGO! Be creative!

Everything about this set drags me back to being 10 yrs old and opening the baracuda on Xmas day. Getting my brother to help me build the ship as it was too difficult for me. This revisit was strangely familiar but also a new build. Holding some parts like the shark for the first time in 28 years, but with new aspects of creating an inn from the hull. Only thing which was missing for me was the Monkey and actually the slight change to the ships appearance. Loved every aspect of it.
Dude I have the OG LEGO Pirates ship so I’m buying this DAY ONE! The fact this set can turn into a remake of the OG ship is INCREDIBLE! And the box art... AHAHAH so nostalgic!
So having extra sails inside the box is a con? One of the biggest problems with buying an original 1989 Black Seas Barracuda is finding one with the sails in good condition since these are made of fabric. They include extras to kinda counter that problem and have many spare sails sitting in safe places (not on display) so that you could sell this set in the future with the sails in good condition. Don't like it? just F-ing throw that away. I can't believe that you seriously consider this as a con.
The reviewer made a mistake in the wording because from min 19.43 he says "First off... I don't like that....you know... you get all these extra sails and, again, it is great that we get these extra sails and we can fully put together a real pirate ship". What he says is right but confusing because they're not "extra sails" as in spare ones, but extra as in: every mast has got two sails rolled up, but he didn't put up the rest of the sails he has got. If you check the video carefully, the front part has got no sails rolled up (although the ship needs 2 sails on that mast, which are in his "spare"), and the back of the ship also misses one other sail, which is, again, in his "spare". That's why the confusion... Unfortunately there are no spare sails.
why are you complaining...just leave it in the island format and people who like the ship more they are just gonna take the ship and leave the island away....so you have the choice here no one is gonna change it from island to ship every week so the negative of difficult change progress isnt there for me....
Trible F right? The fact that there’s any sort of back and forth option from ship to shipwreck without having to completely disassemble/reassemble the entire set is absolutely magnificent. Unreal.

If you think it's empty, use the left over pieces and use your imagination. It's not like you can't rebuild the island that's left to something else...
Johnathan Lehrbass actually... The piece looks familiar to the one used on the original Barracuda but the original one was wider on the bottom and decreases in size and it went up the mast of the ship. This piece is the same size and parallel all the way up the mast.

I don’t think people will want to keep changing the model back and forth IMHO. It will mainly be built as the crashed version as this is how it is mainly portrayed. A must have model that will be added to my collection.
Suggestion/Fun Idea: For those who prefer to have the ship, you can convert the island in a skull island where they're trying to steal the treasure or a pirate bay where the pirates hang out after their journey
I SORELY wanted the barracuda when I was a kid, but I never got it. Lego was expensive, and we were poor. The best I could ever do was a Renegade Runner. This set will not so much allow me to relive nostalgia, but rather to experience that which I never had the luxury of knowing the first time around.
I already know how I can solve those problems. First, I would place the ship parts into their respective number bag and the sails can be placed in a zip lock bag and can be stored flat in the instruction book while closed. Then when I done enjoying looking at the ship and island as well as working the features, I then collapse it down in reverse manner by referring to the instructions by using their respective number bags leaving much of big pieces together while storing the small loose pieces in their bags too. Then I just place it back into the box with the base plate with much it together along the bags and the instruction book with the sails in it. Since it is in the box for storage everything can be preserved and I whenever I need it again, I just slide the parts out and reassemble it just minutes while referring to the instructions as my guide. As you know, I do this all time with my Lego modulars and my Christmas sets every year.
I'm completely guessing mind you, perhaps the reason they didn't connect it all is that it'd need a technique frame to secure it properly so that'd make it difficult to take apart and make/reassemble the ship. Plus price would increase. Also if it's just pins and clips, the danger of many, many people attempting to lift and move it will present a danger of coming apart and toppling. Keeping it as two sections, will force you to carry it, move it one section at a time. Safer I believe this way.
I think it's actually an ingenious idea of lego to create this set that has both island and ship forms. I won't complain and tons of people will agree with me.
It almost makes me sad when I see people who have no idea what they could do when they have an empty island that doesn't look like much as it is and a bag of spare pieces. Not only that but they see it as a huge drawback to end up in such a situation. Their LEGO hobby seems to be decisively different from my LEGO hobby.

This is utterly Amazing, I want two! Thanks for reviewing, I hope this doesnt sell out too quickly! So pumped to get my hands on this and add it to my collection!!!
I think that it's good that it can change into a regular pirate ship. If you dont want to change it into the ship, then dont. It just doesn't seem like a valid complaint. Of course the island is barren, because there was previously a pirate ship on it, and if you are building the ship you dont care as much about the island.
Some people may just want the complete ship and set the island aside or behind it and it's great that people won't have to "modify" the set to have the ship. Lego officially made that possible, they did amazing.
I feel you’re expecting way too much from LEGO on this one... if you could just pick up the ship pieces and snap them together, they wouldn’t be as well integrated when they’re on the island. And how could you expect the island to stand on its own without the ship? You can’t have your cake and eat it to. Besides, you’re not going to take it apart every other day. Really nitpicking, if you ask me
I have that ship. And the box too. One day a man have made me a Deal Of Xbox One X and a Nintendo Switch for him and i denied because its my childhood there and i Want my Son to have it.
Considering I've got both original ships still intact. I will be getting this as well. P.S going through the review I noticed that you are completely unaware of original pirates series. You didn't understand the beauty of the set...that's a NoNo to you.
Maybe the colours are not that ideal for a display ship but if you consider the shape of that ship the imperial flagship from 2010 is a joke compared to this.
M:Tronaut exactly I'll trade since the imperial flagship from 2010 is the most realistic looking pirate set ever produced. It doesn't have goofy colored sails either, I always hated that about the originals..considering the imperial flagship costs about 600 bucks I'll trade for it in a heartbeat
Ok the colours are not that ideal. But it is especially the shape that is so much better than the one of the imperial flagship. I mean if u look at how real sail ships from the 17th and 18th century are shaped u really have to admit that the imperial flagship compared to the ideas pirate ship is a total mess.
I love classic pirates, to me my Skull’s Eye Schooner is one of the three jewels of my collection. I might have to get this one just to rebuild the original. And then after saving all the monies, buy a 1989 set to see how close it is. Of course the ship base pieces are not the same. I prefer the original 1989 style that connected with 2x4s. I wonder why changed it.
I got it the day it was released and was so stoked. After building, I too have mixed feelings. As a fan of the OG Pirates, I’ll probably sell it once it is retired.
I think your "cons" are quite simplistic and non-issues. This a CLASSIC and to have the option to bring it to life or have the sequel of an island is value far beyond your complaints.
I love love love this set. Think it looks amazing in both configurations. For me when I get one I will simply build it into the BSB straight away with the minifigs and all the leftover parts will go into my parts bin.
so can we assume in the lego world the black sea barracude was stuck on an island after all these years I wonder if the sails fit the orginal lego black sea barracuda
I like this set but I also like the original concept more. It would have been great to get a new line of Pirate products. That way we could get the original concept and an updated ship.
I love the look of the ship by itself. As for the main build, the bright color scheme of the boat elements kinda undercuts the shipwreck look that the fan design really nailed. Basically, the ship is far too pretty and well preserved, to look like a wreck.
I mean no disrespect toward Pirates of the Caribbean or Johnny Depp per se, but I was bummed they went from these awesome generic pirates to the movie themed pirates as they do more to encourage creativity. I have been collecting pirates since the Black Seas Barricuda Ship back in the day. I have the blue soldiers, the pacific islanders....just love em'. Probably the coolest feature though, is finally lego giving you instructions for multiple models, a very welcome addition. Kudos to Lego.
Good review, David! I always enjoy 'em. I do, however, politely disagree with your opinion. As a huge fan of LEGO Pirate Ships I think it's soooo friggin' awesome to get a Black Seas Barracuda remake, and I think the fact that 'reassembling' the ship makes every con obsolete. People who'll buy the set for the Barracuda remake, will most likely be adults, with (most of them) having the ability to pimp up the 'barebones' island. Still a great review man! Will definitely help for my decision wether to buy this set or not :D
I just don't see why you couldn't just build the ship and use the remaining pieces to make a beach and dock for the ship... I think a berthed ship moc would look great!
The only thing that bothers me about the ship is that the cannons are not integrated to the ship. Can't wait to buy this, my old pirate minifigs are searching for a ship (or an island) for the last 28 years...
I think you're being picky man. The fact you can even convert it back into the original ship at all is amazing in my opinion

I might have to get this one just to rebuild the original.
And then after saving all the monies, buy a 1989 set to see how close it is. Of course the ship base pieces are not the same. I prefer the original 1989 style that connected with 2x4s. I wonder why changed it.
Still waiting for mine to ship. Also, I freaking love the islander idol head laying in the sand. Such a cool reference to that series of sets.
I got it the day it was released and was so stoked. After building, I too have mixed feelings. As a fan of the OG Pirates, I’ll probably sell it once it is retired.
I really want them to do an anniversary series of those pirate waves from 1989-1997
Starwarsgeek 5782 - I've been saying that for years.
One thing I wish the designers did was to make the boat ‘incomplete’ as it’s been shipwrecked for a while.
Alternate builds & b-models are the best things of the Oldskool box artwork. So this is great. I’m a Space fan, but still bought it!
I just got this set today...
I am SO EXCITED
Love ur vids david
I think your "cons" are quite simplistic and non-issues. This a CLASSIC and to have the option to bring it to life or have the sequel of an island is value far beyond your complaints.
Drunken sailor match perfectly with the video❤
Just buy 2, have one as the crashed ship and 1 with the full ship lol. $400 but I think it'd be worth it.
Basically if you were gonna buy it just to switch it back and forth, don’t. But otherwise it’s perfect
I absolutly NEED this set...
Wonderful LEGO Pirate Set!
I would love to get this set as soon as possible since it’s retiring at the end of the year
I love love love this set. Think it looks amazing in both configurations. For me when I get one I will simply build it into the BSB straight away with the minifigs and all the leftover parts will go into my parts bin.
so can we assume in the lego world the black sea barracude was stuck on an island after all these years I wonder if the sails fit the orginal lego black sea barracuda
i just found my old barracuda pirate ship on the attic.. goona rebuild it just need to find some missing parts
You can solve the problem you have with it by just buying 2 of them :3
it would be nice if Lego also made a big set like this but with a soldier base and a medium boat and one or two small ones
I love the female characters at 8:04, and 8:13. The one at 8:13 reminds me of Hannah Dundee from Cadillacs and Dinosaurs.
Nice that is the best pirate set ever! The front on the ship is soooo good and the review.
I do wish cannons came out of the flaps instead of just windows
Good review, David! I always enjoy 'em. I do, however, politely disagree with your opinion. As a huge fan of LEGO Pirate Ships I think it's soooo friggin' awesome to get a Black Seas Barracuda remake, and I think the fact that 'reassembling' the ship makes every con obsolete. People who'll buy the set for the Barracuda remake, will most likely be adults, with (most of them) having the ability to pimp up the 'barebones' island. Still a great review man! Will definitely help for my decision wether to buy this set or not :D
200 bucks seems like an absolute steal for this set
I just don't see why you couldn't just build the ship and use the remaining pieces to make a beach and dock for the ship... I think a berthed ship moc would look great!
The only thing that bothers me about the ship is that the cannons are not integrated to the ship.
Can't wait to buy this, my old pirate minifigs are searching for a ship (or an island) for the last 28 years...
Scarif MOC coming soon then?
Well done review; I enjoyed hearing your opinions.
Such a nice looking set definitely going to buy it
