Hello, Dr. Gill! I’m a medical student and recently been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease. Just found your channel and I can already tell that I can learn a lot from your videos! So I have one question: why examine the eyes multiple times?
Astrea Studies part of it is just flow. You are looking for different things at each point. I will do a video on it. But a quick list of general eye signs which covered both hypo (so Hashimoto’s is a hypothyroidism for anyone else reading this) and hyper - lid lag - kid retraction - proptosis / exophthalmos - double vision - signs of anaemia - pain moving eyes - odema around the eyes
Hey Dr. Gill! I got diagnosed with hypothyroidism about 10 years ago and no doctor has ever done any sort of exam like this, just bloodwork. Why would that be?
I have a question Dr. Gill, when palpating the thyroid gland in a patient with a history of hyperthyroidism, is it supposed to feel enlarged and with a pulse similar to when we palpate the vein of the wrists? Or does it only feel enlarged? My question arises because that area has to be auscultated. Thank you ❤️
Amne Marie with hyperthyroidism you can get various cardiac changes Most likely you’ll find a tachycardia - raises heart rate - when checking the peripheral pulse at the wrist. BUT there are several causes of tachycardia including simple anxiety With a hyperthyroidism you MAY get what is called a thyroid bruit - so you hear a turbulent rushing of blood sound through the thyroid which is not present normally. In terms of enlargement of the thyroid that can happen in both underactive and overactive thyroid glands... or not be present at all - which is the case in most mild conditions
Amne Marie the pulse, assuming no vascular disease, should feel the same at all points. The heart will be creating the pulse, but the thyroid may be having an effect on the characteristics of the pulse
My mum died of thyroid cancer aged 57. I was 27 at the time, I had to change her trach and learnt so much about her condition. It was an awful time. Her DR failed to diagnose it on time and kept saying she just had a hoarse voice. If he would of diagnosed it on time she would still be here.
You’d expect both arms to be the same. I prefer to check both pulses at once. Doubles the change of finding it quickly AND if there is a difference it may indicate a cardiovascular issue
Are people where you’re from naturally quiet? I feel like your tone and the people in your videos always have a very reserved voice. If that makes sense. You seem like quiet and nice people

🤣🤣🤣 how about on a loop behind the stage? No, it’s hard enough to get volunteers as it is!!
Dr James Gill i volunteer as a tribute. When corona virus pandemic stops I can fly all the way to the UK.
He’s back! I watch these videos because they are so relaxing but I learn so much too! ♥️
As long as you are learning, I’m happy 😊
Rebecca B hi how are you Xx
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again....
“I’d like to perform a thyroid examination, is that okay with you?”
“No, what’re you doing in my house??”
“Fantastic.”
These videos have been extremely helpful for my medical classes sometimes the live clinic classes the instructors go through them so fast you miss a step or 2
It is somehow nice when you see again a person whose been involved in this exams. It is like you know a little more about it.
And as well, really good job Doctor Gill. My favourite part is when you put a pit of paper over patient hands :D
Good Video About The Thyroid Examination Doctor Gill I Never Had A Thyroid Examination Before I Might Come To Your Office In About 3 To 4 Weeks
Thank you for doing what you do doctor Gill. You help people in so many ways
I tried to put the sound to 100%, and yet Dr Gill voice is so sweet haha, truly calming
The “that’s fiiiine” is very underrated ASMR gold.
I came here to relax, but after watching this channel for some time I think I’m developing an actual interest in medicine. 👀
The more we know about our own bodies, the better 😊!
Nice to learn about medical exams and get ASMR. I’m learning and relaxing at the same time! 😊

Thanks for your videos, Doc. I've seen this one but it was recommended again... So here we are! Hugs from Brazil.
Kids wear Superman pajamas, but legends say Superman wears Dr. Gill pajamas
CookieKurma 🤫
this channel is a double whammy for the medical and the asmr community! truly, dr james doing the most lol take care!
I wonder, and this is not to be a jerk or a troll
I genuinely wonder, do you actually consult patients like this, being very informative etc.?
Cuz if you do, it's awesome, and our doctors here (Mauritius) should do that too
Love your vids, keep up the awesome work and thanks for all you do :)
I REALLY try to (as it helps focus my mind) plus I teach ALL of my students to give a verbal commentary too as it helps the patient know what is going on
Then you're even more awesome cuz you're teaching others to do it 😊
As a patient, I really value this.
It also helps me as a teacher know what the student is looking for an doing, so I can give appropriate feedback
@@DrJamesGill i think it's extremely important for patients to know what the doc is looking at and for
They may have felt something, for example, and dismissed it with little thought of else, but knowing it's of import, we can then share that information
Got to give Abby some BIG props for being the model patient.
Go Abby go!
Hello, Dr.
But a quick list of general eye signs which covered both hypo (so Hashimoto’s is a hypothyroidism for anyone else reading this) and hyper
- lid lag
- kid retraction
- proptosis / exophthalmos
- double vision
- signs of anaemia
- pain moving eyes
- odema around the eyes
Hey Dr. Gill! I got diagnosed with hypothyroidism about 10 years ago and no doctor has ever done any sort of exam like this, just bloodwork. Why would that be?
Unfortunately it’s often a time thing.
I just wanna note the patient is a beautiful person

Have a good whatever you're gonna have next
I have a question Dr. Gill, when palpating the thyroid gland in a patient with a history of hyperthyroidism, is it supposed to feel enlarged and with a pulse similar to when we palpate the vein of the wrists? Or does it only feel enlarged? My question arises because that area has to be auscultated. Thank you ❤️
Amne Marie with hyperthyroidism you can get various cardiac changes
Most likely you’ll find a tachycardia - raises heart rate - when checking the peripheral pulse at the wrist. BUT there are several causes of tachycardia including simple anxiety
With a hyperthyroidism you MAY get what is called a thyroid bruit - so you hear a turbulent rushing of blood sound through the thyroid which is not present normally.
Dr Gill and Dmitri (MassageASMR) should team up. It's what the world really needs right now
5:38 Why did her arm move the wrong direction?
I love watching you're medical videos because you're voice is amazing for ASMR! Very soothing and helps me sleep!
1:16 DrGill.exe has stopped working
my joke from the original vid! stolen! and without remorse 😭😭
I’m so sorry to hear that. Hopefully the chances of that are less today. But regardless I’m so sorry for your loss
Dr James Gill sadly it was only 4 years ago this April but hopefully you are right and medicine is more advanced . Thank you
Worth the wait. In isolation thanks to Coronavirus, this has healed me.
Dr. Gill you are loved by thousands of people. 🤙🏻
he said putapitapaper, the world is stressful right now but my day is made ☀️
Dr. Gill knows that his voice is so relaxing and calm? I would be sleeping in one minute in this examination
First time being checked by Dr. Gill: *normal*
Second time being checked by Dr. Gill: *straightened hair, dressed up*
I see what you're doing here Abi
Some say Dr Gill can fashion a bit of paper from thin air, using only the power of his voice
😂😂
1:25 what would the problem be if the two pulses are different?
You’d expect both arms to be the same. I prefer to check both pulses at once. Doubles the change of finding it quickly AND if there is a difference it may indicate a cardiovascular issue
Thanks, my wife has a thyroid condition and this has been helpful.
👍👍
The legend is back!
Educational, relaxing AND memes. This channel has it all.
2:54 me when Dr. Gill says "fantastic" softly
I like how gentle you are Dr. Gill. 💙
Are people where you’re from naturally quiet? I feel like your tone and the people in your videos always have a very reserved voice. If that makes sense. You seem like quiet and nice people
My grandfather had a gentle voice, if not quiet. But my voice does change depending on what I’m doing. My pts can confirm that.
Dr James Gill thanks for the response! I was just saying that you seem like kind people. Keep up the videos! We are proud of your success so far and want to see you continue to grow.
I taught my doctor the hand thing for testing reflexes....which I learned from one of your videos. It's the only way I can do the reflex thing, as I tend to tense up, so thank you.
5:25 BRILLIANT
Dr. Gill: "Hello, my name is Dr. Gill"
Me: 😭😭😭😭😭 (I just got emotional when he said those deep and beautiful words)
