  • Thyroid Medical Examination - Thyroid OSCE Station - Medicine Explained - Clinical Skills - Dr Gill
This Thyroid Exam Deep Dive looks at the details of how to establish the thyroid status of a patient, whilst highlighting what is being checked for during special tests and examination findings
We’re going to focus on WHAT we’re doing during the exam, HOW we’re doing it, and crucially WHY you need to #putabitofpaper on the patient's hands!
In this video, we demonstrate how to perform a clinical examination of the thyroid for your medical school Clinical Skills OSCE. Endocrine examinations are quite common for medical finals
For a passing grade in your Clinical Skills OSCE, in a Thyroid exam follow the approach of:
    - Inspection
    - Palpation
    - Percussion
    - Auscultation
    - Other tests
This video has two other thyroid assessment videos associated with it:
    • Thyroid Clinical Exam ... - Thyroid Assessment Demo
    • Thyroid Assessment - M... - Thyroid Examination Deep Dive
Some people may experience an ASMR effect from this video
    ------------
Please note that there is no ABSOLUTE way to perform a clinical examination. Different institutions and even clinicians will have differing degrees of variations - the aim is the effectively identify medically relevant signs.
However during OSCE assessments. Different medical schools, nursing colleges and other health professional courses will have their own preferred approach to a clinical assessment - you should concentrate on THEIR marks schemes for your assessments.
The examination demonstrated here is derived from Macleods Clinical Examination - a recognised standard textbook for clinical skills.

I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism almost 3 years ago and I’ve been in treatment since then. This medical exam is what my doctor does in my periodic check ups, I wasn’t sure what she was checking in my hands but now I know 🤓 The only part of the exam my doctor does not check is the part of the tongue. This video is very informative, I had almost all of the symptoms mentioned for hyperthyroidism, we found out about it because I got tired real quick with just some steps, my vision used to numb black and started to have tachycardia, at first I went to a cardiologist think I had heart issues and he diagnosed me with hyperthyroidism. While in treatment I had just one eyeball with back inflammation, it was really tough because my face looked really asymmetrical, I went trough a 10 week treatment and got a little chubby but then I lost the weight. I’ve been weighting 36-38 kg since I was 15 and I got to 40 kgs for the first time last year with almost 2 years in treatment and I’m 25 years old now. I’m not a doctor but I really enjoy these videos as they help me to understand a lot of exams and get to know what symptoms can show through these conditions. Thank you!!

Since I was a teen I went through a lot of medical appointments for years because of my very low weight and they used to tell me it was hereditary because of my parents weight until I was 23 and was properly diagnosed. My thyroid was really inflamed and sometimes it hurt. I started taking 4 and 1/2 pills of 10mg thiamazole daily, now I take 1/2 of 5mg 1 day and 1 day not, and my thyroid is not swollen anymore, I’m gaining weight, I don’t have heart/pressure issues anymore, and I sleep really well now, I have a little of double vision, I take a daily pill of selenium (my doctor says it’ll help) but my double vision was worse so I think I’m getting better 😎👍🏻

So, the late Marty Feldman's famous "pop eye'd" look was due to hyper thyroid issues? Is that sort of thing treatable with modern therapies?

I cannot tell you how many times I've watched this video already (don't ask why), but I JUST noticed that Abbie magically puts on shoes and a different pair of socks there for a few seconds ;D

Question: in an earlier video Dr. Gill held the arm up and tapped with the tendant. One arm moved to her body while her other arm moved outwards. Why is that? The place where one strikes?

I got diagnosed for my hyperthyroidism by... an aesthetician, noticing bald patches in my eyebrows. So... There's that. :p (well when I say "diagnosed" I mean they encouraged me to get tested, which I did, and the blood test confirmed their suspicion)

it’s often surprising where the impetus to get checked comes from.
