Haha I just think it's funny that the original sonics punish you for going fast..you have about .5 frames and 2 pixels to avoid enemies and traps coming from the side and it most definitely leads to you playing it cautiously and slowly (obviously unless you're a master of the game)
RLMs Rich Evans on Pre Rec had a great video on that

My favorite was always the trolling from “Ken Griffey Jr.’s Winning Run” for SNES.
Wait too long to throw the ball as the pitcher, and the umpire would literally stand up, turn around, tap the screen, and say, “Play the game, kid!”. This happens alongside the crowd going silent and air horn going off as he taps the screen. XD

The Ghost in Splelunky has some interesting caveats to it. For one, there is a way to stun the Ghost, and that is to use a Camera on it. The Ghost also turns any regular jewels it touches while chasing you into Diamonds, which are extremely valuable.
Honorable Mentions to Left 4 Dead. Where the AI "director" would send a horde at you if you took too long existing.

I've actually read "Rave Master" manga and those big butt guys are ACTUAL characters from that title (Jiggle Butt Gang, I believe) who think of themselves are extremely evil, even though none of the heroes give them the time of day. And the "fart thing" from the game is actually their "ultimate technique" within the story as well, so it's a real adaptation of the manga tropes here :D

@@KylenPhylar yes! I feel it was so much better!

@@gorimbaud I choose little brother not because of age, but because it was a shorter series and never gained as much popularity. But yea, probably should have said it the other way around.

Ah yes...the deadly ghost. My friend and I used to co-op that game. I sucked at the game, but we discovered that my ghost could not only freeze enemies, I could also delay the ghost.
Our games just turned into him throwing me onto spikes at the very beginning, because I was more useful dead than alive.
Worms had a pretty good way of punishing slow matches. For those who don't know, Worms is a 2-D turn-based strategy game where you control a team of little cartoon worms, and attempt to kill the other team with interesting (and often funny) weapons like the Holy Hand Grenade.
Anyway, in most of the games in the franchise, going past the designated time limit will trigger the water level to rise a little with every turn. Every level has water at the bottom of it, and any worm that falls in is instantly killed. Late in a fight, most of the land had likely been destroyed, and players will be struggling to keep their worms on whatever land remains. This may or may not come with the health of all worms dropping to 1, while certain death slowly approaches. To make things worse, the game always makes some little joke about the worm that drowned.
(The worm's name) sank like the Titanic.
(The worm's name) is sleeping with the fishes.
(The worm's name) tried to breathe water.
You get the idea.

"it's based on a manga" is actually a good reason to justify that Plue is a dog. or so Elie says. i dunno, i never read the manga but did like the anime.
No one actually believed that Plue is a dog in the series, they just went with it because it was easier than actually explain what is plue
no anime
the wolverine one could've been better/scarier if she was constantly following you and you could constantly see how far away she was, and like, if you stood still for too long she'd be able to catch up but if you moved you could leave her behind if you're good enough
I was gonna say all games should just play the sonic drowning music when they want you to hurry up but then I remembered that it just makes me panic and forget how my limbs work
There's the Reaper in the Persona games, spend too long on a dungeon level and he's coming after you!
The real enemy... Haha
The reaper was surprisingly easy to kill. Elizabeth, in the other hand...
Thank you! I was going to post this
Killed by flu
Fight him during flu season and he literally cannot fight back.
"...that featured such memorable characters as: a mermaid, some kind of penguin wizard, and whatever the hell these things are supposed to be"
In the words of Mr.Westaway "looks a bit biological"
Persona 3, when you didn't go to the next floor quick enough and Death comes.
That one health bar fighting game idea isn't bad. You just need a gradually escalating damage multiplier, that's all. Everything does more damage as the timer goes on. Basically a gradually fading-in form of one hit decider. The butt bandits can still come out and fart away the match if nobody's doing anything for too long, though. But they should be punishing tentative overcaution, not genuine back and forth action. This would solve that.
Or have a health bar with an odd number of hitpoints that decreases by 2 every so often, with the extra hitpoint going to whoever lands the first blow. That way there'll never be a stalemate so long as one person gets at least one hit.
8:20
And here I thought I'd never see the Jiggle Butt Gang again...
I totally forgot about them until now...
What about in Persona 3 and 5? In both games, there was an incredibly tough enemy called The Reaper, who would begin to chase you if you took too long on a floor. The only warning you got was the sound of chains, before you saw this terrifying figure closing in on you, with the only escape to be to run to the nearest exit.
Hes pretty easy in p5
You unlocked some memories with power stone 2. I've been trying to remember the name of this game forever. That one fighting game on the Dreamcast with weird stones...
I'd like to point out a favorite arcade game of mine that no one knows about:
Snow Bros
Take to long on a level, and a pumpkin will appear and start breathing ghosts at you
OK?
Wait realy? İ finish this game with my cousin 2 times but i didnt knew it
Jane: "Those are 7 strange ways games encouraged you with lethal force to get out of here, and now I'm going to do the same to you..."
Me: "Well, I knew this day was coming eventually, but I thought we had more time..."
Run peons, all who defy our ladyship shall perish
Yo-kai Watch also has something like this! If you mess around with side quests for too long and don’t progress in the main story, Terror Time will happen (aka the world gets all dark and a giant overpowered demon chases you around). It usually only happens at night, but procrastinating for too long will cause it too.
Reminds me of the unkillable creature that stalks you in Bomberman if you take too long. Or the Reaper (is that right?) in the first or second Gauntlet for the Nes.
Well, I have another one: In Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, when you stay on a stage of the Dungeon too long, you will get a message that somethings coming. If you ignore it several times, you get blown away by as strange wind and are out of the dungeon.
I always wondered what that was...
that happened in black and white too remember the relic castle after you beat the game? where you get the plates for arceus, or get the relecs to sell for extra money
I hated that so much
^THIS RIGHT HERE
Edit: there was also an earthquake version that was even more terrifying
Probably arceus
It's called Mystery dungeon, you being there makes it not so much a mystery. I'm super Mystery dungeon, the game says that the dungeon change every time you enter it and also because the game doesn't want you to grind.
I'd say second most scariest seeing a ghost is when at night and you see your child playing and giggling but then you remember you're single and don't have any kids...
No, it's when your kid has trouble sleeping cause of the monster in the closet. But when you go to the closet, you see your kid and he says someone is in his bed.
@@lightning1776 Nah, it's little bit past that, when you remember you're single, have no kids, and live in a studio apartment.
@@alphalancer I think at that point its less scary, and more time for the men in white.
How about finding your kid playing with a ghost? My mom experienced that one when my sister was playing with one...
I will never forget my time playing Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, happily exploring the floors for the stairs to the next level. As I’m cruising along, I get a message that “something’s coming”, and “it’s getting nearer” then “it’s even closer” and then I DIED. No reviver seeds help with this, whatever your mission is failed and you have to come back later. I remember being TOTALLY freaked out by this, but it turns out that was just the way the game made sure you didn’t take too long on a floor.
Sonic: I’m outta here
*jumps off screen*
"A clean fight" Ellen wrote that one didn't she
Ellen wrote it...Amy Schumer stole it
I love how people question something until you say "It's manga/anime" and suddenly everything makes total sense.
I also believe Nier Automata has 2 or 3 endings that you can get if you wait around long enough and don't progress the story.
The spelunking ghost was actually helpful though if you don’t get cornered. It turns gold into jewels, which is very helpful if you don’t murder shopkeepers.
There's also Mappy. The screen will tell you to hurry up, the music gets faster as well as the enemies and more cats will be on screen. If the player doesn't hurry up, a coin will appear. Touching it in any way will kill you no matter if you're in the ground or in midair. I haven't tried using the magic doors on it, though.
At least you didn't include the PTSD inducing music of Sonic's countdown timer to running out of oxygen while underwater.
Jesus, man, I literally heard that as I read it.
Have you not seen the video they use that??? I still break into a cold sweat any time I hear it. I've no idea how I coped as a child.
That was the first thing I thought of when I saw the title! Anxiety level max!
@@Zoso14892 I have. I didn't own a Sonic game back when I owned a Genesis though.

Oh no
But seriously, we all went through that experience. And now more gamers do too with the mini Genesis / Mega Drive
It isn't about taking too long to finish a level or fight, but this video reminded me of Barbatos from Tales of Destiny. If you spent too much time spinning around and auto-battling, he would eventually appear and insta-kill your entire party leading you to a Game Over. That was implemented to prevent power leveling while you are out instead of properly playing the game.
I *love* Power Stone (1), I don't normally like fighting games but something about that one just clicked with me. I never got the second game though.
Thanks for the video.
"it's based on a manga, remember?"

@@thecoolgamers1005 I wouldn't know, I've never watched Fairy Tale. I don't have time to watch anime lately and don't foresee it for awhile
Rave Master was made by the same guy that did Fairy Tail and he took a lot of stuff from Rave Master to do Fairy Tail. Right now he's working on a series called Eden Zero and all the main characters are carbon copies of Fairy Tail characters.

"Feels no fear, no pity, and no remorse." Are we still talking about the ghost?

I think that's a line from the original Terminator movie
sounds like çhåřą
what about the pokemon mystery dungeon games? where if you spend too much time on any single floor a random wind blows you out of the dungeon and OHKO's your entire team?
One of my favorites I personally experienced is in a game called Cursed Mountain, the main character chastises you in the calmest voice if you don't trigger any button input for only about 45 seconds, saying things like "this is no time for tea"
I remember an arcade game that was everywhere in the '80s in the US, a side-scrolling space fighter game with a bewildering array of buttons... I once played a similar game on an early PC. Being too young to figure it out, I discovered that if I never moved the space fighter, tiny 4-pixel dots would eventually move slowly toward the fighter. They were lethal on contact and dodged everything you threw at them. Because you're supposed to fly toward the right edge of the screen and the rest of the level, like in Zero Wing.
“Sniper with a grudge against sonic” let’s just say mario wasn’t the reason Nintendo won the console wars against sega
I want-a you to a-take out the blue one. Make it-a look-a like bad programming.
Plot twist; Nintendo actually developed the Zapper to assassinate Sonic.
Nintendo didn't win, they just survived when the new kids Playstation and Xbox showed up.
Nice job for taking him out! Beer's on me
*hedgehogs
I guess this is where Jane got her inspiration for her neck time bombs that give a hearty zap whenever the Oxtra crew don't work hard enough.
That's not a time bomb, that's a shock collar. :p
Ah, the Suicide Squad method, of course!
That Simpsons arcade machine is STILL in Skegness to this day. I always make a point to play a few games when I'm there. So good. Such nostalgia. :')
The ghost in Spelunky remind me of the Hall Monsters in Venture, a retro classic on the Coleco Vision back in the early 80s. Your character was a smiley face with a bow, battling monsters for treasure. Linger too long in a room, and an unkillable Hall Monster with a chant that was quite scary to my eight-year-old self comes in and kills you.
King's Quest 7, the horror-themed level with the boogeyman showing up whenever you stayed too long in one screen... It scared me so much as a kid.
When the Sonic X opening started I got hit with nostalgia waves. Wtf?
It means your brain is infested with nostalgia parasites. You should go play something released less than 5 years ago.

The one from Spelunky reminds me of Starbound, where if you’re on a moon mining for that purple crystal stuff that fuels your ship, a bright purple ghost thing chases after you the whole time. Most of the time you don’t notice it, but the more you mine the fuel the faster it gets and it can get pretty spooky, because it too is invincible and instakills you.

Can we talk about Azure Dreams and the earthquakes that shake the floor around you apart if you take too long? Of course, the punishment was just going up to the next floor like you were supposed to anyway, but that was still one of the sources of anxiety in childhood that never fully went away.
Left 4 Dead had a semi-hidden mechanic that acted as a clock. if you spent too long in one area other than the spawn zone/room, it would send a horde at you, separate from the ones the director normally sends, or the ones that occur because you had to press a button to proceed. the idea being that either it lights a fire under your ass, or it chips your health down until you eventually start dying.

I really would’ve been surprised with that Rave master entry, had I not have watched fairy tail and that filler episode with bubble butt gang and Erza.
See guys this is why you watch anime, nothing no longer surprises you.
Not true. I was surprised there was a game.
Rave Master saw some success
That's not a reason to watch anime. Nothing surprises me because everyone else is predictable because they're human. There actions, thoughts and mental breakdowns has been seen before. Gonna need a better reason than that.
“We’re the big butt bandits”

Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale has the Will-o'-Wisps. If you spend too long on any floor of a dungeon, they spawn in and chase you down until you make it to the exit, and getting hit by one does a LOT of damage. The difference between them and most of the other examples on this list is that they can actually be fought and killed--and they drop an item that you need for certain crafting recipes! There's an infinite number of them, though, and the longer you stick around, the stronger they get, so it's only a matter of time before they wear you down...
Creepy...
When I first read the title I thought I was finally going to find out what the killer flying dead fish thing is from Bubble Bobble.
I hated that bastard so much.
Ceri Williams His name is Baron von Blubba, and he’s a whale.
@@erinmiller1433 No, it's Skel-Monsta.
I just thought it was some weird ass ghost thing. The graphics in Bubble Bobble are somewhat abstract.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution. The tutorial teaches you that there's no time limit. The first level teaches you that actually there is a time limit. The following levels completely abandon the time limit until one random level later on where if you take too long, the best character dies.
You forgot to mention that in Spelunky html5/classic, the ghost is much faster and disappears if you are farther away from it. Also, it does 100 damage
Random person: Here, Mike, let me give you a hand!
Mike: *AAAAAA*
I'm glad you cut away from the Sonic CD game over screen before the game over music started, especially if it was the US soundtrack because it's bloody terrifying
How can you not at least honorably mention Bubble Bobble when it comes to procrastinating? Enemies get angry and go berserk, then a ghost appears to kill you, and only gets faster the longer you avoid it. Like wickedly fast
Weirdos?! That's the Notoriously Evil Jiggle Butt gang! Truly an end too good for the characters in that game.
The Sonic CD one... I stopped to listen to the past music in Metallic Madness and Sonic just LEFT. Cue one angry 11-year-old. 😂
8:19 oh no! It's the Jiggle Butt Gang!
CPhT Fluke The phrase “WTF Japan” comes to mind.
They had no business being that thicc tho. 😭😂
Team Jiggle Butt...Pokemon Gen 9 villains?
... oh God, I thought they were created as filler for the Fairy Tail anime
Begore that was also that Lucy's spirit. When i saw that and the jiggle gang i had to rewatch the video to make sure i didn't miss if its fairy tail game or not
Here's 2 more:
In Deep Rock Galactic point extraction missions the more time you spend in the level the stronger and more often enemy hordes will spawn. 30 minutes in it's pretty much a constant stream of enemies.
In Raid on Bungeling Bay (The Commodore 64 version because i never saw this feature work in the NES version) the enemy is building a battleship that will sink your carrier and shoot at you with homing missiles (making the mission way way WAY more difficult) but it's possible to bomb it while its still under construction to prevent it from ruining your day.
Bomberman Adventures (I think that's what it's called) for N64 has a good "hurry up" in multiplayer mode. The walls will close in, water will rise, meteors fall, stuff like that.
No mention of *The Reaper* from the Persona series? Notably, Persona 3, where I'm pretty sure it terrified the hell out of everyone who played the game.
Nobody:
Sonic: iight imma head out
I wouldn't be surprised if the Simpsons hand was made to prevent kids from holding machines while they ate or went to the bathroom.
In all honesty, that was a really great way to bring back Nemesis to the RE series.
no mention of the reaper in Persona? esp in Persona 5 when you wait for 5 whole minutes in Mementos
Dont forget about Persona 3! Not only do you end up getting tired but if you take too long you end up getting chased down by the grim reaper
Duke Nukem: *cracks knuckles* "Whaddya waiting for, Christmas?"
Let’s not forget about Evil Otto in Berzerk, which is the first mechanic I know of in any game to hurry the player along. R.I.P., Peter Bukowski.
also like to add in a version of Ace Combat X’s final mission, you need to be fast or else a microwave plasma ball thing cooks your jet and makes it explode
The first time I came across the reaper in persona 3.... was an experience.
7:59 I’d say this was the worst punishment a game could throw at you for sticking around too long.
I remember the horrors of Ice Climber, still give me chills at night.

What about persona 5, when literal death chases you
What about the Reaper in Persona games?
It spooked the shit out of me on my first P5 playthrough
the darius shmup series, if you take too long to kill a boss a special roullette of cuboid enemies that is never seen elsewhere will constantly appear from the top of the screen trying to ram you, forcing you to either shoot them (thereby increasing the chance for you to kill the boss) or die by contact, this is also a leftover from the acrade (just like in the simpsons segment).
The funny thing about this is that there is a boss named gigantic bite in dariusburst chronicle saviors who is so tanky that if you are remotely conservative with movement/burst laser placement (you know...as to not die and even assuming max shot and missile upgrade), it is almost guaranteed that the cuboid roullette will appear
fun fact: In the VR game "Walking Dead: Saints And Sinners" every time you go to sleep to progress into a new day, the game tells you that supplies have dwindled and zombies have grown in number.
this is actually true, the longer you take to finish the story mode, the harder it becomes
