Not sure about the holding back part but I guess it is really hard for her to choose songs to compete in a Chinese competition. If she makes too much changes to a popular English song, the sense of familiarity of the song would be gone. And Chinese audience wouldnt be able to relate to it. Chinese singers, on the other hand, had the advantage to rearrange the song in any way they like because no matter how much they changed the song, the audience knew what they are singing and the kind of emotions they are trying to put forth

Night relaxed note : opened sound, easy to listen to, no shrillness, enough breath output, no blocking, stable. strained note : high larynx leading to shrillness and unopenness, throaty placement causing tense or ugly raspiness, unstable, nasal note is basically singing with nose, tongue tension makes you feel like singing with a chewing gum in mouth

Not sure about the holding back part but I guess it is really hard for her to choose songs to compete in a Chinese competition.
