Good info! Not only does it give you a chance of retrieval when the anchor gets lodged underwater, it gives a high probability chance! I use a nearly identical anchor in my kayak and have freed it by breaking the tie at least a dozen times! Once I used a slightly stronger cable tie - big mistake - I had to pull very hard to break the tie but eventually succeeded. Now I use the small, thin black ties and it works flawlessly. One note, however, as I see it! I DO NOT add a chain to my anchor as you do. It does occasionally make it harder to get a bite and hold, but I prefer to keep the weight down in my kayak. Great illustration of the tie break in action!
I have anchored in shallow estuaries (less than 12ft deep) with this set up and it works fine if you let a bit of anchor line out so the anchor digs in at a shallow angle. I do favour a Bruce anchor for shallow muddy tidal waters though
You’ll be surprised how strong it is! If you got snagged on 50lb braid you’ll find that it’ll hold you just fine, so the cord on a dive reel will hold no trouble!
If you are based in the UK then you can get everything you need from Cornwall Canoes: www.cornwall-canoes.co.uk/kayak-fishing/kayak-fishing-accessories.htm If you are based in another country then try a dive shop and you should be able to find similar.
The only issue with using cable ties is plastic waste if you need to use it. Sadly the sea is awash with discarded fishing gear. A trip link is less than £10 and won’t add to the problem.
Very true. Practice and experience comes into play when anchoring in more challenging conditions. Confidence and organisation is key. Not something to be rushed into!

Great info..👍🏻
Thanks Chad 😀
Nice one, always good to reduce weight on a trip, would you say anchoring in Estuaries you could dispense with the chain? TIA

Thanks for the comment 😃
i buy this today and i doit like you
I bought one of those diver reels but it seems to me that the cord is very thin and not suitable for an anchor how wrong or right am I

How pounds is this anchor? 3lbs??
Did you keep the line that came with the scuba reel?
Yeah the line that comes with the reel works great and is plenty strong enough for anchoring a kayak 👍🏻
👍
Where did you buy your anchor line/reel?

Easier said than done on choppy water and the kayak drifting fast .
