      @@TheCookiQueen There are even occurrences of customers who had accounts hacked trying to get them recovered well before the migration even began, and due to Mojang shuttering its account support services those customers were basically left in limbo unable to recover their accounts. This is not the fault of the customer's inaction, but the unreliable and difficult non-responsive nature of Mojang and Microsoft customer support. It is this way by design. Microsoft's standard operating procedure is to close Microsoft accounts that are suspected to have been hacked, but in the process of doing so they also permanently disable the linked content such as the Mojang account associated with it, which is really an absurd prospect because the customer contract is with Mojang and Mojang has a responsibility to provide you what you paid for and only ban your account for valid reasons as per Mojang EULA, so Microsoft policies should have absolutely no bearing on any accounts that were not yet migrated.

  • @niebezpiecznynickxdtvpl5850

    I like how in previous EULA was mentioned that once you buy Minecraft, you will never lose it and nothing will take it from you
    And now not only the migration thing happened but also I've read something about Minecraft accounts getting deleted after 2 year of inactivity

    • @peppermintpig974
      @peppermintpig974 4 месяца назад

      Correct, Microsoft account policy permits Microsoft to delete accounts that are not active after 2 years. This does not invalidate your contract with Mojang, but it does create an incidental breach of contract by Mojang. And since Mojang and Microsoft are like the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing, they feign ignorance, tell you to talk to the other corporate entity, and do their best to claim nothing can be done while trying to grind you into submission and defeat.
      All customers were cheated because nobody had an expectation of losing their accounts prior to this action. Setting aside the fact that there are legal arguments against what Mojang did, just think of how much of a scumbag you have to be to treat your customers this way, taking their money and leaving them with a big F U.
      FYI, Contracts before May 24, 2011 can't be revised by Mojang. Those are awesome contracts if you have one. That said even if you have one after this point in time, what Mojang did was not lawful IMO.

    • @emad3241
      @emad3241 4 месяца назад +238

      if that so, then i would love to see a civil suit against Microsoft, this is completely illegal, even if they updated their EULA, old users have no obligation to accept the new EULA

    • @peppermintpig974
      @peppermintpig974 3 месяца назад

      @@emad3241 The first million customers (before May 24, 2011) are under a contract/EULA that has no revision clause. Mojang can't change the terms on these customers. When Mojang posts language on their website or in the launcher saying continued use means you consent to the EULA which they link, this is bait and switch fraud because those customers were already promised access to this content. In addition to that, they were also granted future versions of the game. In essence, the contract with early adopters transcends the individual user account. Mojang is still contractually bound to provide what they promised and cannot enforce or invent new terms on these customers.
      Customers after this date are subject to revision, however Mojang did not establish the contractual authority to mass terminate accounts when they started the migration. Mojang didn't have the legal language present for customers to anticipate that they would lose their accounts. Based on these facts, it is not contractually permitted to set arbitrary deadlines and close off migration or access to these customers unless you first present it as an EULA, and as such EULA's currently have no terms such as deadlines to respond to the legal offer.
      While it can be debated whether Mojang can outsource their account management system under the original customer EULA classes, what Mojang can't do is force you to enter into a third party contract. Because Mojang posted on Twitter saying at one point that migration was mandatory, they created the conditions for a lawsuit based on threatening to take away contractual services under duress with the intent of coercing customers to enter a third party contract. Original customers are not obligated to do this, which means Mojang has to legally find another way to be in compliance. Taking away authentication services is a breach.

    I was in touch with Microsoft on and off for months when they announced the whole migration ordeal. I bought Minecraft in 2009 and used some school email address that has since been completely lost. I was a child when I bought the game and used a pre-paid Visa card (at least I think I did, I did not have a debit card at the time and my parents have not found any transaction with their bank leading to the purchase of my Minecraft copy). Even though I exchanged over 30 email with Microsoft their answer was simply "sorry can't help you" resulting in my main, and only, Minecraft account being completely lost.
    The most insulting part is that I reached out almost right away when I heard about having to migrate accounts and had months of emailing back and forth, yet no help was provided whatsoever, and eventually the day came when I could no longer migrate my account.

      Tbh we should file a class action lawsuit against them for this. There were people who were unable to during 3 years for good reasons, people in service, people who had temporarily lost account access, people in friggen comas woke up to losing their account on top of missing years of their life, and on top of this, the nametag is still taken even if the account is inaccessible now so they can't even buy a new license and still go with their username. Pretty easy to just keep a list of the old usernames, and then offer support until the last one is gone, they'd just train AN employee or so to be able to append the new account, and strike off that name, until the last one was marked. It's a bad move from Mojang either way and I despise it as much as any person here but I can't see what the problem is (in the sense of your username being connected to your childhood memories), especially since Mojang lets you use the name again after a certain period.
      Edit
      for the people asking me about servers: I meant my reply ONLY in the context of what OP said. With a 2011 account there are close to none servers from that age that are still online. Lotta shit can happen that makes you not play a video game for 2-3 years (it's not like it's an absolute priority in life). That doesn't mean your not gonna come back to it, especially a game like Minecraft which is very long lived and constantly evolving, that an entire generation has some form or other of nostalgia about, making it likely for us to chronically want to come back to it.
    Not only is it not an argument in that regard, it's also not an argument you can morally win with : once you buy something (it was not rented) you expect it to belong to you, as should you.
    Just because this product is virtual doesn't mean it's not property, and defending Microsoft for taking it away from people comparable to making an apology for a big company that would use a loophole scam people out of their house to acquire their terrain cheap, or pollute the local river or something: just because they legally can doesn't mean they should and doesn't mean that we can't complain or rebel against it.

Compartmentalization is the key to security, NOT connections. Microsoft is blatantly lying to you if they say they're connecting Minecraft to Microsoft for security.

      Meanwhile about the migration with the minecraft, I even saw some news articles warning about it before it happened and true I wanted to migrate immediately since I was a bit anxious about missing it.
      There were emails coming too and when it did I migrated.
      Now tell me, how microsoft can figure out which old email adress can be paired to which microsoft email adress? Should they let people migrate endlessly? When old email accounts are being hacked daily, it's a matter of time before somebody digs through some old email accounts whose owners didn't bother to put on double authentication nor any decent password and migrate his account away from him. Or just a mojang account that only had a weak password for it.
      I know that it is about "ownership rights" but hypothetically let's say minecraft didn't sell and it bankrupted. Would you still be the owner of your game copy, if its confirmation is stored online on some server that has its costs? For how long exactly?
      You weren't given a serial number unique to your game copy so you can retrieve it later. The only thing is your old adress email and who knows if it's active since you ignored that email.
      Minecraft began to be a big game which people want to buy, stealing an account especially if it holds unique capes or even the new capes like all old accounts now do will be even more valuable.
      It'd be nice of microsoft if they finally collected enough of people waking up now and finally said _"ok that's enough of late sleepers waking up, let's refund them"_ but dunno if that will ever happen since it's bad bussiness for big corporation.

    Friend I gifted a key to back in alpha had that happen to him. Support would do anything unless he had the "transaction id", which wasn't a think for alpha and part of beta. It took both of us filling tickets to get escalated to somebody that knew gift keys were a thing, but then they required the key itself. Something that was used once back in alpha. Used to be able to look those up on the Mojang account page, but MS liked that prior to MS account support, so I couldn't get it there. Support couldn't get me my key list even with my transaction id for the key purchases and friend couldn't use that to recover his. I remember reading a story on Reddit. Basically, OP took a break from Minecraft for 2 years for personal reasons. They come back - the account's gone. No notifications or warnings were sent, iirc the account didn't have any issues with migrations. It was simply wiped out from the face of the game.
    And this crap is actually scary.
    30$ in my country is really expensive, especially for a game, so buying Minecraft from the official site is almost like gambling.
    As the time goes on, it's more and more unsurprising why a lot of people in post-USSR countries pirate the games and why piracy is generally still a thing.

    I find it pretty ridiculous that Microsoft couldn't just leave open the "Migrating an account" option so that people who've bought the game years prior could still connect and play again if they wanted to, without being forced to migrate within a timeframe or buy a new account. I'm also amazed that it isn't illegal to, in a way, "rob" players of their product they had already paid for. Even with the excuse of "Well, they had 2-3 years," it still doesn't justify their attitude towards old Minecraft accounts. In my opinion, if they didn't want to leave open the option to migrate an account, they should still be legally obligated to refund any and all users who didn't migrate their account. If it didn't cost so much money and you weren't fighting a multi-billion-dollar company, you should sue Microsoft for essentially robbing paying customers. It's just not right.

      They are not allowed to force migration on early adopter customers. The rest of the customers are still entitled to an opportunity to read and respond if this is an EULA policy change. As far as we can tell, Mojang did not establish a contractual obligation to "migrate OR ELSE" prior to initiating this plan, but if you have evidence to the contrary please provide it. Customers are entitled to what they paid for and if Mojang wants to push changes the legal standard is legal notice. You can't usurp a contract by proposing changes and not having the other party informed. Sending an email does not meet the burden of proof. Further, you also had customers who were not even sent emails. Mojang never gave itself authority to impose time sensitive consequences from EULA.

      @@peppermintpig974 What exactly are you hoping for? "Doesn't mean the burden of proof", pfft. Sure, one email might not justify it. But multiple emails, and public disclosure - repeatedly - for years leading up to it... what more are you expecting from them?
      Don't quote me on these figures, but apparently Java has sold ~30 million times whilst a total of ~300 million Minecraft copies have been sold... Even just using the smaller figure of 30 million, what is a reasonable effort on their part? Letters in the real world? In-person communication? A lawyer showing up at 30 million doors? (Admittedly there'd be some people with multiple accounts, so less than that)
      "Oh but I haven't played in years." Well, then, shell out another $40 for what is effectively endless entertainment, limited only by your imagination and ability to mod. If you spend 2 hours, that's $20 an hour for entertainment, and probably ends up cheaper than the cinema. But, of course, you could end up spending 2000 hours which brings that down considerably... to 2 cents per "hour of entertainment". Or, maybe, it's just not a game you enjoyed and you had little to no intention of returning.
      Maybe it's the old builds and worlds you've lost. I feel for you, I do. It's tragic... but time passes, the present is already over, and memories fade. Rebuild, or don't. Doesn't matter either way.

    Fun fact! This is very illegal under the Australian consumer law! Quote "A major problem means the product:
    has either one serious problem or several smaller problems that would stop someone buying the product if they knew about them beforehand
    can’t be used for its normal purpose, or another purpose the consumer told the seller about before they bought it, and can’t easily be fixed within a reasonable time.
    Businesses can’t take away a consumer's right to a refund or replacement for faulty products or services. It’s illegal for businesses to rely on store policies or terms and conditions which deny these rights. For example, policies which say ‘no refunds’ or ‘no refunds or exchanges on sale items’."

      I don't know about the legal options in the US, but here in Germany we have something called a ,,konkrete Normenkontrolle". Here one side of a court trial can ask the judge to pause the trial and refer the trial-deciding-law (any law that might decide the outcome of a trial) to the constitutional court, which then decides if said law is legal. For this, the judge must be convinced that this is necessary (otherwise this feature might get abused). Something like this could be useful in a trial involving the DMCA.

      this just isn't how the DMCA works, the DMCA is consumer protections, shitty ones sure, but it exists to protect you
      the DMCA makes just outright removal or ownership illegal, Microsoft can't just decide to remove your ownership, to do so you either have to breach the EULA you agreed to or if MS is to do something like removing Mojang accounts they have to give you ample time to react to that (which they did to make sure they didn't breach the DMCA)
      what your describing is a world where the DMCA doesn't exist at all, were you have ZERO protections instead of the again PRETTY BAD existing protections, Im not saying the DMCA is perfect, it is FARRRR from it, it needs to be updated like yesterday, but it is a good thing, a very small good thing, but a good thing

    So I had this happen to me. I last played the game back in 2020-2021 with an account that would be about 13 years old now. Life got busy, but more importantly the account was tied to an ancient email that I didn't use anymore (it wasn't my primary address even back then) and none of the reminders actually reached me. Three years later, a week ago, I randomly got the urge to play the game again. When I realized they didn't support Mojang accounts anymore, I was pretty annoyed but decided fine I'll just move it to a Microsoft account. Except the "migration period" had ended in 2023 and for all purposes I didn't own the game anymore and would need to buy it again to play it.
    You can say I'm an idiot for not migrating after 3 years. The thing is though, I work in software development, I know how these systems function and more importantly, how management functions in these companies. There's absolutely no technical reason why you shouldn't be able to migrate your Mojang account to this day. There are more ancient and arcane systems that function to this day no problem. The entire banking system runs on COBOL software written in the 70s/80s for crying out loud. This was some higher up suit's idea and it's purely a greedy, ignorant business decision. So for people blaming those that didn't migrate on time and giving Microsoft a free pass for a shitty decision that screwed over likely thousands and thousands of people, you're severely missing the point.
    Now for me it wasn't really a big deal to buy the game again. I pretty much only played single player mode and since I don't really game much these days, less than 30 bucks for a game I've been playing for over a decade on and off that I can get into on occasion was worth it now that I have my own salary. But for someone else, they might've lost something of value and were forced to buy the game again (which in the current economy not everyone has the luxury of doing) for no other reason but because some corporate fuck felt like it. So yeah, fuck Microsoft for this one.

I stopped playing Minecraft these past few years because of college, and I only just realized that I missed the migration period because of this video. Damn.

      "There's absolutely no technical reason why you shouldn't be able to migrate your Mojang account to this day. There are more ancient and arcane systems that function to this day no problem."
      The issue isn't that it's not _possible_ to support them, it's that it doesn't make sense to. One of the biggest changes between the 2 accounts is the 2FA system, since if you weren't aware MC accounts were infamous for being _ridiculously_ easy to crack and share around. You could even straight up steal many accounts by buying them for like $2 online then switching the email and password to your own. And that last point is the main issue - migration is pointless if it lasts forever, because then the hackers could simply migrate their illegally acquired accounts and continue using them as their own. By stopping migration they basically killed the existing alt-market since all those abandoned accounts couldn't be used.
      (There's still ways to steal accounts of course and as a result alt shops selling them, but it's nowhere near as easy and cheap as before. They also could have used a system to require copious amounts of proof to continue migrating instead of straight up ending it, but the amount of people affected by it are so small relative to the total playerbase that they probably just don't care)

    • @moestuph8817

    • @AttacMage
      @AttacMage 11 месяцев назад +13

      @@SKDemon0 2FA is external and security flaws don't excuse arbitrary time limits. At the least, it incentivizes bad actors to hinder someone's migration so they can steal accounts with rare names or harm people they don't like.
      The whole point of the transfer is that Microsoft wants more people feeding data attached to their names. That's why Microsoft accounts are so universalized across live-service platforms. The transfer was done for the purposes of data harvesting, not security. If they wanted 2fa, it's infinitely easier to just provide it as an option while keeping accounts native to Mojang.
      I transferred my account. I was affected by it even if I didn't get locked out. I don't want to have to use Microsoft's account to be logging into a game I play once a year with friends. It's scummy and deceitful.
      edit: Someone else said names stick around as "taken", so the former point is moot. That's a problem in and of itself, though.

      Eharmony started sending debt collectors calling me but because contracts in Australia usually require a signature and agreement all it took was one call to our consumer protection watchdog and Eharmony ceased contacting me. So their US terms of service are nearly useless here.
