The site didn't host any data. It used Mojang's servers, just like a legitimate game client. On Reddit, Notch confirmed that the site was not illegal or against the TOS explicitly. Copyright wasn't a factor because no copyrighted work was being hosted.
I'm sure the reason for Minecraft's updated terms of service, along with requiring you to accept the terms when hosting a server, was partially inspired by this debacle. I believe that the reason why it was not considered illegal was due to the fact that the site was not distributing anything that was copyrighted. I'm pretty sure that it downloaded the legitimate client from Mojang's servers and just tricked it into thinking that the user had a valid login.
The client, just being a simple launcher that downloaded the actual game files from the Mojang servers, meant that there was no copyrighted information or data being hosted. The files were only downloaded upon the initial launch, and during any subsequent updates. The game files were stored on your machine after being downloaded from the servers, so it's not like the data had to be re-downloaded every time.
Still, Minecraft for Free accounted for more than 10% of Mojang's server traffic, from what I remember Dylan telling me about the cease and desist email.

And then you proceeded to get hooked on Crack…
*No? Just me?…*
When I was super young, I heard about this website through the grapevine, and it was effectively my first exposure to Minecraft. I played through its peak, and the switch to hosting Minecraft Classic once they got shut down (though this is the first time I've ever heard about the Quake match). The disappointment once they switched to Classic was what made me beg my dad to buy Minecraft in the first place. It feels super weird to see this obscure little memory of mine from, like, second or third grade immortalized, since I thought this was an experience only me and the friend that told me about it had.
It's crazy to think that this website probably really helped with Minecraft sales and popularity. At its peak, it accounted for more than 10% of traffic on Mojang's servers. It was probably how many many people were introduced to the game, people who otherwise didn't have the means to buy it legitimately or the knowledge on how to pirate it. I think one of the coolest things about the site is that it technically didn't host any copyrighted data whatsoever, so it was for all intense and purposes legitimate, and not piracy. It Just exploited holes in the way the game was built and the terms of service.
@@R2Bl3nd Hot take: Piracy should be legal
@@TheRenegade... I'd be fine with "legal" "piracy" of old software. I still use a bunch of things I've bought back in the day, so they have to be installed from a CD, right, but cheap laptops don't tend to have CD mechanic thingies, which suck. It was challenging to find a working torrent for it. Then again, even if it were legal, it wouldn't help me in this case, right. My wish is more along the lines of "obligatory archival of old software," right.
In regards to new stuff, that's hot take, definitely, because noone who ever tried to make anything would agree with that, but I believe that anyone should be free to try things before purchasing. That's what you do with anything you buy... except for food, I guess. Although sometimes you can try it! And while there are softwares with demos or lite versions, and bless them, it's not as common as it used to be. Or sometimes you have to give them all your personal information before getting the access, and how can you know if it's worth having your identity stolen, right?
With things like ebooks, that's kinda trickier, because for stand alone the previews could be good enough, but sometimes it's just one chapter and I think you need at least 3 to get to know the vibe, y'know? But if you download a book, you probably gonna read it whole, and if you then decide it wasn't worth buying, then you kinda already stole it, and that's kinda sad, right. With comics, they're either very short or very long that it would take 1,5 book at minimum to get to know where the story is going, so "subscription service" would be better in this case - yeah, they're paid, but I'm looking at piracy from the view of someone who wants to find something worth spending money on, right.
Don't really care about downloading of tv shows or movies... they'd be on tv eventually anyway... and if it's exclusive to a country or channel or something, welp, I guess. I wonder how tv shows can even make money? Seems like people don't really pay for them, just some change for the tv fees and taxes, how can that cover multiple tv shows? Ad money, too, of course, but idk it's bizarre and frankly, don't really care.
And I wouldn't mind having free research papers because some journals ask for 30 usd for one work, and, like, what-
It's just 10 pages and I want to read them in order to cite three words in my paper, asking for 30 usd is not nice. For the whole issue, maybe even for 5 works, right, but sheesh. Science is expensive, but the research paper sells aren't the main income for scientists so it doesn't have to be expensive. Most of them are lying in them anyway.
@@TheRenegade... yeah I mean it's not taking anything away from the creator except potential revenue. But for certain things it actually increases sales, because the people pirating it wouldn't have bought it without trying it first.

I totally remember this website. Never knew it was owned by a team avo member!
It’s small things like accepting a quake match that made Notch such a great figure in the gaming community.
Great upload!
Damn it’s crazy how many people remember this, I still have all the old MCForFree videos and the website saved in my bookmarks from late 2011 and early 2012, and I remember BeBopVox making a Minecraft Monday video covering the lawsuit when it happened. Awesome to see the full story in its entirety be told for everyone to hear.
Considering that this website once accounted for more than 10% of Mojang's server traffic, it's no surprise that a lot of people remember the site. I remember Dylan telling me he got emails all the time from schools and stuff thanking him for running the site. Especially schools from third world countries and places where they generally didn't have the budget to buy Minecraft for everyone. It was good while it lasted.
@@R2Bl3nd Why would schools thank him? Wouldn't it just make children more likely to be distracted lol. I do remember playing it in the computer lab in grade 5 though, so I'll thank him haha

I don't really know much about Notch as a person but the fact that he settled a legal dispute with a fucking game of quake one of the greatest things I've heard of.

Congratulations, I hope it was worth it. I also hope you can understand sarcasm, considering racists are not known for intelligence.
Notch might want to thank those guys for hosting that pirate site. If little 11 year old me back in 2010 had not gotten to try out Minecraft, I probably never would have begged my dad to buy it. Im sure there's plenty of people who have a similar story

Notch is Swedish, they’re usually quite lax when it comes to piracy. I heard Notch said at an award ceremony for Minecraft in like 2011 pirating a game is just expected, but the updates are what keep people paying for and supporting a game. Something along the lines of it can’t really remember but it’s still cool.
He even said he might open source it if Minecraft would stop being profitable, looks like that is off the table, lol
If i recall well, he actually suported brazilians pirating Minecraft because he was against the big taxes that Brazil had with videogames at the time. I think the total tax count was more than the actual price of the game

It reminds me of when a Japanese art collector named Takashi Hashiyama had auction houses Sotheby’s and Christie’s play Rock Paper Scissors to decide which of them would get to sell his collection of paintings. Christie’s won with scissors, beating Sotheby’s paper.
Imagine making billions of dollars from a product that costs nothing to maintain and still refusing to give it away for free, instead doubling down on microtransactions.
Man, I remember being huge on AVO back in the day, even remembering this match, but didn't know it was because of this website. The teenage me is quite shocked to hear this, and we shall always remember that team AVO deserves ice cream.
God i miss avo, they deserve some ice cream :)
Ahhhh yes, I remember my 1.4.6-1.5.10 days. I would actually enjoy playing in the browser, with a very well designed background from Mojang's website. Then 1.6.2-1.6.4 release, which I found out was VERY moldable.
I'd constantly be playing dragonblock C on the original official server run by Jemboy, which I actually moderated. That was my first introduction to building, whitelist, as well as pvp. Due to the mechanics being more simplistic for dragonblock it was easy for its time, but it was advanced for the mods of the era.
Those were times I will always cherish when I was still in junior high.
This is how I got into Minecraft, and in turn got all my friends into Minecraft, this is such a big throwback. Had to ask on Twitter if anyone remembered it, still remember the story of how notch beat that guy at Quake to take the website down. Memories.
