This English lesson explains the difference between the past simple and the present perfect.
This is a difficult area for a lot of learners.
My job is to help you understand this difference. You're going to get clear explanations and lots of examples.
    THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THESE TENSES
The past simple is used for actions that finished in the past and have no connection to the present.
The present perfect is used for actions that haven't finished.
The example I gave is this:
    - My grandma never went to Madrid
    - Paul has never been to Madrid
My grandma died a long time ago. Therefore, the action of her (possibly) going to Madrid is over.
Paul is still alive. The action of him going or not going to Madrid continues.
We use the simple past with past time expressions. This includes:
    - I went there YESTERDAY
    - She told me TWO HOURS AGO
    - They went to London IN 2002
Present time expressions are more difficult. What tense you use depends on what you're talking about.
    For example:
    - I've had a great day (in general)
    - I had a great day today (talking about work that has now finished)
The present perfect is stricter in British English. For example:
    - Did you have breakfast yet? (you'll hear this in American English)
    - Have you had breakfast yet? (only in British English)
USING THE PRESENT PERFECT WITH JUST
    - I just saw her (American English)
    - I've just seen her (British English)

Great, I've taught eng for a few years and I've watched many videos about pp vs sp, because it's very tricky also to explain (especially to italian speakers!), and this is the best one in my opinion, so thanks for your very clear but simple explanation...I'll copy it!

I'm from Turkey and kind of advanced english learner. But, this two difference is still confusing for me. Because in my native language, we just use 'Past Simple'. But this video clarifed the most important part of the difference. I will use like American people while speaking about the recent past. The other usages are already clear.
I have a way to think truely:
If the emphasis is in the 'time' I would use 'Past tense', If the time doesnt matter I would use 'Present perfect tense'. It really helps thinking quickly. Also, If the actions result is in the now I would use again 'Past simple' like the American people. Otherwise, I choose not to speak about past ahaha.

    • @greywizard3859
      @greywizard3859 2 года назад

A few days ago, I was thinking like:
Experience, the recent result, unfinished actions = Present perfect tense
Finished actions in the past = Past tense.
To know the usages area doesnt help me to use them in daily life speaking. So, I focus on the things I mentioned up sentence.

Super clear Jack! Thank you a lot! Though I must say as a native speaker you've learned this grammar naturally as a kid and you choose a correct tense automatically now. So as foregn learners (not to get stuck with this rules in mind while speaking) we have to listen to English audios/videos a lot to catch this difference as quickly as you do...or even unconsciously what would be perfect)) I mean another video of chat with Kate would be great for training " the past simple and the present perfect". Thank you again!
