The only weak point of the E9X 3'er/E8X 1'er is the lack of LSDs from the factory. With the E46 and E36 you'd often have an LSD fitted from the factory which saves a huge amount of money since installing a new diff costs 25% of the value of the car.
Very few 36's had lsd's, possibly some of the 328's and definitely the m3. But in the e46 the only version to leave the factory with an lsd is the m3, as bmw leaned heavily on the asc which then became dsc, traction control system.
