They planed only about 3000 cars to build, but after everyone gets crazy and the sells get to the roof, they steched the production to 6331 Cars. They couldnt build more, because the tools for the bodyshell were at the end of there life.

Bill 11 Rings Russell these bmws are quick, as i found out to my cost about 6 months ago. I was being followed closely by an all black 3 series estate, 335 as it turned out, which i thought was a guy pushing me......until the lights came on.
360hp bmw 1 series here and it pulls real nice betweeen 80 and 120mph and hits the 155mph limiter effortlessly. the sweet spot if you actually want to have fun while driving lawfully is around 200hp, mx-5 type cars.
Doug is spot on when he says he wishes more car companies made cars like this. The premise now a days seems to be that if you want to have the luxurious interior, options, etc, you need to purchase the higher model, which normally equates to a bigger car.
2012 128i 6MT checking in. I love how "honest" the 1 series is and it delivers pure BMW fun. It's kinda sad how BMW no longer makes a car with a manual transmission, RWD and a naturally aspirated I6.

I worked in the used car market in South Africa for about 10 years and the BMW 1M is the only car that I ever caved on and bought for myself, I had access to a whole catalogue of performance cars over the years and always had a "Company Car", all it took was one drive of one of these and I was sold...paid 10% above cost (so got it 1000`s of Rands behind book value) and I gave up my company car, drove it and loved it for just over 3 years, she was a thirsty girl but never failed to put a smile on my face when behind the wheel...3am drives around the +- 120km highway "Loop" around Johannesburg in peak summer when I couldn`t sleep still go down as some of the best driving times of my life!
It's not even close to being unwatchable. Unwatchable would be looking at a blank screen the entire time. This is just slightly annoying. Video is totally watchable.

Totally agree Doug. The 1M is an amazing little beast. I got to drive it in Greenville at the ///M Driving School a few years back and the confidence it gave me on the track was amazing. It was light, really agile, and I could throw it around without feel body roll or any tire scrubbing. So, like you, I would love to own one of them.

I own 2 cars. A BMW 1M as reviewed here, and a VW 24V VR6 GTI. They are both a total joy to drive, and put a smile on my face for different reasons! Of course, the VW is more a daily driver that I can toss around in adverse weather, but the 1M is in a league of it's own!
I had the 24v vr6 GTI after a 12v vr6 GTI and before my mk5 GTI. All manuals, all great for different reasons. Mk4 was a bit heavy but the engine was so smooth.

Why does every review on the M2 say it resembles to an e46 M3 then? M3s or M4s are packed with technology where as the M2 isn't. It's way more "Basic".
Not sure why anyone is saying the M2 isn't the spiritual successor to the 1M. It is essentially a modernized 1M. I have a friend that owns both, races professionally and that's how she feels. The M2 really isn't a smaller new m3/m4.

I agree this is probably the greatest BMW ever made, possibly the greatest rwd car ever made. I remember first reading about this from BMW and I remember thinking this is going to be special. The E82 is just the perfect size for that 335 straight six combined with a rwd terrain. Just a perfect combo. Man I want one. Closest I can get to one is the E82 135i M. But those are becoming rare too.
My 02 Civic Si was like that, the clutch and shifter were so smooth it made it fun to drive eventhough it wasn't that powerful it was light and the steering was great.
I got a 2002 civic max 5 door euro version. Its a base model too with the 1.4 non v tek engine. It's the slowest car out there but it's soo fun to ring out and the clutch is soo smooth and the gear box the same. Plus you can rev it out all you want cuzz you're not going anywhere.
Love this car even though I have not drove it. It all makes perfect sense. Usable around power and a compact size for every day use not forgetting the quality build.
Hey Blue, the 1M only came 1 way, as a coupe and only 3 colors with only a manual transmission. If it's a regular 1-series you are looking at then to each their own. If you care about handling etc, then the coupe is more rigid, hence better handling. The convertible is more of a fun summer car, at least for me as I live in the north. Your choice.
I actually took this car out for a test drive back when they first came out. I was absolutely FLOORED by the drive experience. It remains to this day the most fun I have ever had behind the wheel of a car. Looking back, I realize the mistake I made getting into the larger 335i (which was also a great car). Maybe I'll pick up an M2 instead.
This might be my favorite car I have ever driven to date. And when I drove it I owned a 2008 Audi RS4 so I had good competition for it. This thing is a street legal go cart. So fckn fun
since he already reviewed an M2 a few months back it would have been nice to compare/contrast this car with that one, particularly since an M2 starts at around what these 1Ms are worth these days (maybe they mark up the M2 as well, who knows, would have been interesting to find out on doug's channel though). the 1M is a great car, no doubt, but the 1 series chassis is way inferior to the 2 series that the M2 is based on.
I instantly fell in love with this too. Currently in an MKVI GTI and in love. This 1M is like the GTI's mature older brother who lifts yet retains a respectable personality.

The 335is is very close in power and they only produced 6000 in total over three years but that 1m is a bucket list car beautiful and rare nice review Doug.
I love the 1M .. I love small cars like it with decent hp.. My last car was a 1999 honda civic DX-VP with a 1.6L non vtec 106 hp D16Y7 engine. I loved that car. It was a pleasure to drive on tight windy roads.
So having the seat rails on show is a plus for this thing as that trim costs money... but is a negative for the Mitsubishi he just reviewed at a cost of $10k... make your mind up.
It’s a plus in the case of a car that is focusing on the drive. Where they already support the interior well with leather and stitching while losing the ounces and dollars it costs to produce that extra bit. It’s the same reason you pay for Porsche to remove your radio
I 100% agree. The best BMWs were the mechanical ones, regardless of the horse power. I have and love the BMW E34 525i. It's only a 2.5L inline 6 but the mid- range acceloration is amazing, it handles like a roller skate, and if you drive the M5 or Alpina versions they are off the chart. all that fun in a 20+ year old BMW. I would LOVE to see you review a 1980s BMW M6 or 635 CSI to get your take on the top of the line old school BMWs, when their motto was "the ultimate driving machine" and it was absolutely true. I love my cars small, simple, and strong. Yeah, that tossable feeling is awesome,and not needing near the HP to make 'em go is always hella fun- especially if they can carve up some backroads on a whim!

I love my E85 2006 Z4M roadster, Imola Red with Sepang Bronze interior. I wanted my FIRST roadster after I sold my 1972 Datsun 240Z, with a fresh 3.1 stroker I custom built and owned it for 12 years. I love not really getting any attention ( I did a full BRE paint/graphics on the 240Z ) I have been doing Autocrossing in it. Such a fun car, they only built 3000 between 06-08 for the US. In my six month search for a fun/fast roadster and almost giving up and moving on to an American V8 muscle convertible, I came across one for sale here in SW FL. I knew within 1 minute of my test drive that I was going to buy it. Z3M was a strong consideration, but subframe/rod bearing issues made me walk away from getting one. 6 spd manual and naturally aspirated makes it a true drivers car. Top down year round is a plus !
Lots of folks like the simple standard shift cars yet they are getting hard to find in new cars today. Hope they figure it out and start offering drivers cars again. BMW is supposed to be the ultimate driving machine.

I drive a 2010 diesel hatchback version of this and even tho I’m making 150 hp tops it still feels super sporty and yes I can confirm the manual 6 speed in these may be the smoothest stickshift on the market even today
The 1M harkens back to the E21 323i sport model and the E30 M3, quick, lightweight, no-nonsense go-cart built for the driving experience. I sold my 1981 323i with sports exhaust, genuine E21 Recaros, Bilstein coil-overs and a 3.9ish to 1 LSD because i didn't have the time and money to restore it properly. It had a tiny bit of rust, a few cracks in the dash, ruined upholstery on the Recaros and it was in dire need of a full paint job. The new owner has done all of these things and sent me photos, oh my god i'm happy it got to be a nice car again and damn i want it back.

Hey Blue, the 1M only came 1 way, as a coupe and only 3 colors with only a manual transmission. If it's a regular 1-series you are looking at then to each their own. If you care about handling etc, then the coupe is more rigid, hence better handling. The convertible is more of a fun summer car, at least for me as I live in the north. Your choice.

I actually took this car out for a test drive back when they first came out. I was absolutely FLOORED by the drive experience. It remains to this day the most fun I have ever had behind the wheel of a car. Looking back, I realize the mistake I made getting into the larger 335i (which was also a great car). Maybe I'll pick up an M2 instead.
The 1 series of that time did indeed drive excellent. Loved also the simplicity of its design.

This might be my favorite car I have ever driven to date. And when I drove it I owned a 2008 Audi RS4 so I had good competition for it. This thing is a street legal go cart. So fckn fun
since he already reviewed an M2 a few months back it would have been nice to compare/contrast this car with that one, particularly since an M2 starts at around what these 1Ms are worth these days (maybe they mark up the M2 as well, who knows, would have been interesting to find out on doug's channel though). the 1M is a great car, no doubt, but the 1 series chassis is way inferior to the 2 series that the M2 is based on.

I instantly fell in love with this too. Currently in an MKVI GTI and in love. This 1M is like the GTI's mature older brother who lifts yet retains a respectable personality.

Interior reminds me of my 3.8 r spec genesis coupe: simple, no fluff, accent stitching, that's it.
I love the 1M .. I love small cars like it with decent hp.. My last car was a 1999 honda civic DX-VP with a 1.6L non vtec 106 hp D16Y7 engine. I loved that car. It was a pleasure to drive on tight windy roads.

It’s a plus in the case of a car that is focusing on the drive. Where they already support the interior well with leather and stitching while losing the ounces and dollars it costs to produce that extra bit. It’s the same reason you pay for Porsche to remove your radio

I 100% agree. The best BMWs were the mechanical ones, regardless of the horse power. I have and love the BMW E34 525i. It's only a 2.5L inline 6 but the mid- range acceloration is amazing, it handles like a roller skate, and if you drive the M5 or Alpina versions they are off the chart. all that fun in a 20+ year old BMW. I would LOVE to see you review a 1980s BMW M6 or 635 CSI to get your take on the top of the line old school BMWs, when their motto was "the ultimate driving machine" and it was absolutely true. Thanks for the great reviews, Doug! Keep 'em coming.

I love my E85 2006 Z4M roadster, Imola Red with Sepang Bronze interior. I wanted my FIRST roadster after I sold my 1972 Datsun 240Z, with a fresh 3.1 stroker I custom built and owned it for 12 years. I love not really getting any attention ( I did a full BRE paint/graphics on the 240Z ) I have been doing Autocrossing in it. Such a fun car, they only built 3000 between 06-08 for the US. In my six month search for a fun/fast roadster and almost giving up and moving on to an American V8 muscle convertible, I came across one for sale here in SW FL. I knew within 1 minute of my test drive that I was going to buy it. Z3M was a strong consideration, but subframe/rod bearing issues made me walk away from getting one. 6 spd manual and naturally aspirated makes it a true drivers car. Top down year round is a plus !

M1 is a great mechanical drivers car. M2 is a better tech oriented drivers car. They're both great. No use arguing about which one is better when your only chance at owning one is when the 7th owner of a salvage rebuilt titled one posts on craigslist :(

I drive a 2010 diesel hatchback version of this and even tho I’m making 150 hp tops it still feels super sporty and yes I can confirm the manual 6 speed in these may be the smoothest stickshift on the market even today

The 1M harkens back to the E21 323i sport model and the E30 M3, quick, lightweight, no-nonsense go-cart built for the driving experience. I sold my 1981 323i with sports exhaust, genuine E21 Recaros, Bilstein coil-overs and a 3.9ish to 1 LSD because i didn't have the time and money to restore it properly. It had a tiny bit of rust, a few cracks in the dash, ruined upholstery on the Recaros and it was in dire need of a full paint job. The new owner has done all of these things and sent me photos, oh my god i'm happy it got to be a nice car again and damn i want it back.
