    If you asked Clarkson, he'll say that the BMW 1M is one of the greatest cars ever made. But we've found a car that may have miraculously improved on that five-star recipe - a 4.0-litre V8-swapped 1M. Does it get much better? Mike took it on track to find out.

    You mentioned weight, but surely there isn’t actually a huge weight difference between the car with an S65 rather than the N54 because surely all the turbo and associated parts weighs more than a couple of cylinders?! Either way, this does sound better than the N54 which is some going in itself, however the car as a whole is one of the greatest small packages to come out of BMW😍

    • @richardweerasinghe3296
      @richardweerasinghe3296 2 года назад +4

      @J B Agree there is more power available in the N54. But this is basically taking all the best bits of the 1m and merging it with the best bits of the M3 without any after-market modification. Very appealing.

    • @MrPTManning
      @MrPTManning 2 года назад

      Like the N54, the S65 is also an aluminum block engine, so for a V8 it's not heavy. Was actually slightly lighter than the S54 in the E46 M3. S65 is all about the throttle response (because it has ITBs), sound and 8400 rpm redline. Tuning wise, a supercharger is basically the only option, with which 650 hp is easily doable.

    Though I love straight line big power. This is another example of power doesn't mean everything as you know N54 can make this S65 power with even more torque without breaking a sweat in the regular 1M. This 1M has loads of character with the S65 and arguably a more fun car altogether.

    • @bradleyland
      @bradleyland 2 года назад +1

      @J B that's missing Arthur's point though. The N54 might be the more performant option, but is it as enjoyable to drive? For some people, I understand that it will be. I know plenty of turbo addicts, and I don't begrudge them their choice. But there's also a lot to be said for the experience of a highly tuned, naturally aspirated V8 shoved into a tiny little car. I've owned both, and I can appreciate them both, but the song of an S65 at 8,000 RPM stirs something in me that I just can't find with a turbo I6, no matter how hard it shoves me down the road.

      @@ryanpuryear Everyone seems to get excited over high horsepower numbers. That might be the only reason the industry uses that specification. After all, at least in the automotive world... it's not even something that can be directly measured; it's just a man-made thing. What gets measured is *torque* - then someone grabs a calculator, multiplies the measured torque by the RPM it was measured at and then divides the result by 5,252. That's it. "Horsepower" = torque*RPM/5,252. Raise the point at which an engine develops its power to a higher RPM and, obviously, its horsepower rating increases. If that RPM is high enough, it can even cause many people to think an engine is more powerful than it actually is even if its actual power (torque) is *less* . On the other hand, if an engine is said to make 300 horsepower at 2,000 RPM, that actually means that it produces 787.8 ft/lbs of torque, lol. Which explains why (relatively) large displacement turbodiesel V8 engines can end up weighing in the neighborhood of 1,100 pounds, fully dressed - they need to be stoutly built to handle the massive internal forces involved in producing the power that they do.
