- "A wonderful mystery." That's what Morley Safer thinks when he meets three savants: a pianist, a math whiz, and a sculptor. All three are spectacularly talented in one skill but otherwise mentally disabled. How does savant syndrome produce "an island of brilliance" in the brain?

To anyone wondering, Alonzo is still alive and sculpting today at 61 and the man now has a net worth of around 19 million dollars.
Wow! Good to know.
Blessed✨
Does he have family? Who looks after him?
What?!
Smileyrie James Yeah very true, but at least he would have the money to be cared for in his own home and not forced to go into residential care if he had no family and wasn't able to look after himself. No doubt with that kind of money he would have plenty of friends, lets just hope they're of the honest kind who only have his best intentions in mind.
Alonzo's eyes, sparkle with joy and pureness!
They do sparkle 😊. something is going on that we don't understand.
I agree. Whatever is going on in his mind seems more joyous than what most of us experience. The look in his eyes is nirvana.
Alonzo has probably seen the face of God
He is an angel.....we are blessed to have witness such pure beauty
He's practically angelic.

@@TheMcdrewb that is wierd, I'm not usually that likable.
Jo Lube it’s interesting how RUclips’s recommendations work
Never give up
The parents may think that they had done a random act in providing the piano. However, it could be a telepathic response or something like that. One can only speculate. Our understanding of existence is obviously miniscule.
My cousin isnt a savant, but at the age of 3, his sculptures looked like they were made by a machine. He uses clay and his tools were different toothpicks, forks, needles depending on the details his work needs. He once made a cow with a very small calf feeding on its milk. He's now a mechanical engineer, still with his amazing skills.
It makes me realize anew how we "normal" humans waste so much of our time on trivial, unchangeable crap when we could be developing our talents and intellect.
I just hope we don't destroy the world... so these beautiful souls can continue to enrich our creator
No such thing as a normal person. We are all different and have a talent. Sadly most of us never know our gift because society isn't set up to help each other learn what our gifts are.
Yes!
Alonzo captures the inner beauty of these wondrous creatures. He is the instrument of that greater power all around us.
Alonzo's smile made me smile. Not an evil bone in him.
he's very pure, God loves him

This is a beautiful thing! My brother is Autistic savant, and was always taken care of by my Mom. My Mom died last year and now I have the greatest gift of taking care of him. Interesting he says he’s smart when asked what made him special. We say they’re limited intellectually, yet they have superhuman abilities.
the interviewer almost dismissed that comment lol.
they're honestly just highly specialized, neurologically. a normal working brain is taking care of more than theirs, keep in that in mind. it's no wonder we aren't so specialized, tho some of us normal ones are.
I’ll stick to being able to count above 10 and tie my own shoes over being blind, unable to take care of myself and playing the piano. There’s nothing super human about these people.
@@MrCarnutbill67 you can use psychologytoday.com to find a therapist in your area

Why would I need one? Because I see these people as disabled instead of super human? Given the choice I bet they’d all choose to give up their “super powers” and be able to live independent lives. If Alonzo had normal intellect for his age, he'd be a lady killer. What a gorgeous man!
dec des great smile too.
@Sally Landrith Face facts. His chances of having a relationship with a grown woman are slim to none, if he has the mentality of a child. No one, especially not I, has determined he doesn't deserve love, but I would be highly suspicious of a "'woman" targeting him for a mate. He has to be loved and cared for as the beautiful person he is. Not everyone on earth gets to have a mate. It is what it is.
A Gold Digger will not mind
Disgustingly sad
I'm sure Alfonso has had a few, shall we say, naughty encounters in his time.
“I am smart”, “I got a good mind “, “ i’m a musician“... all of them want people to know they’re normal and not lacking in any way, considering how they would have been treated growing up ...
So beautiful..
They are not ''normal''.!
Watching George, the calendar calculator, I would wager that Dustin Hoffman was inspired by him to develop the mannerisms of the Raymond character in Rain Man.
Rain Man was inspired by another savant named Kim Peek from Utah.
For sure, and the voice as well
To a T !! He even resembles the look, the stature and mannerisms the producers developed with Mr. Hoffman.
@@muslix1147 The idea for the story was inspired by Peek. I was talking about the mannerisms Hoffman employed in the depiction.

Alonso the sweetest man ever, great talent
Much adoration to all the foster parents out there doing what they believe in 👏👏👏
It saddens me deeply to think of how many people have been wasted or killed because our lack of understanding or prejudices or fears of where another person is coming from. These people are rare gifts to mankind. May we all look for the good of others in our journey.
I wonder if Alonzo get to see his money, not that he probably cares too much but I hope it goes to good use. What a smile , so pure and beautiful. I'd pay for his picture to brighten my day. The fella who remembers dates and the weather, I wonder if he set his mind to it he would teach himself math, I ask as his mentor said that he hadn't set his mind to it so therefore he couldn't do it. The man at the end , I loved that he could even sing beautifully. I imagine his foster mum took great joy from her son .
Such lovely thoughts.
Sadly I wonder how many poor souls have never had the chance for the world to discover their extraordinary gift for lack of support and opportunity from the ones closest to them.
Well you got so emotional that you forgot that Alonzo doesn't paint pictures but makes sculptures of wax.
Watch the video again and pay attention this time. Alonzos statues start at $750, he quit his job at the stables... Savants generally do not interact well with most people taking a 9 to 5 job would be impossible.
I was wondering how his money would be "managed" for him as well.
Who is watching in September 2019? Kodi from AGT? You can also see where Rain Man was inspired from.
Michael Duran September 2019? Just a quick glance and I see at least 30 people who have watched this the same day as you!

Michael Duran : ME! This is September 20, 2019 at 4:25 PM Central Time! This was such a wonderful piece. It makes me wonder how different the world would be if you took every savant and were able to open that part of the brain in EVERY HUMAN on Earth! WOW!!! My father is a genius and is also a musical savant. He can listen to any song (even from the wild 80’s!) and play back the guitar part of the song perfectly! He can play an electric guitar and a regular, non-electric guitar. He is a really smart guy who never really leaves the house (unless he was going to work...) and is not very social. He is now in his mid 60’s and can barely function because he became a severe alcoholic and hurt his brain. He has had three strokes and can barely move his body. He has been sober for about 8 years, right after his first stroke...
Makes you wonder who is more intelligent. Kodi won AGT, well deserved.

I love how the "experts" have no idea what the savants are doing, but if you ask the savants they tell you.
J Anderson It’s cuz scientists and experts think they can explain things without God...it’s obvious they cannot.
@@HajiStaxGaming that is a very profound comment. Thank you. Absolute truth.
Amazing, isn't it?
Steven Ryburn I know Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and the savior of all. But...if I wasn’t aware of that previously, it would be greatly evident to me through Alonzo saying God made him smart. Scientists say they don’t know how it’s possible, but strangely they fail to consider the opinion of the individual experiencing said “phenomenon”.
When the pianist’s mother was speaking, she mentioned that the compartment of the brain that produces music was separate from the rest of his brain that was damaged, so he could, quote, “Have some sort of talent. And he got it!”. I find it extremely difficult to believe that is by coincidence and not designed by a loving, merciful God that brought good out of a debilitating condition presented to the world through original sin. The simplest of answers, “God made me smart.”, from Alonzo, along with the mother’s testimony about her son’s ability to play the piano, are both profound in their explanation to the “unexplainable”. Jesus is the truth, the way, and the life...no one comes to the Father but by Him. 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Steven Ryburn My pleasure! That comment, “God uses broken vessels.”, is absolutely incredible. That should hit every hard on a deep and personal level. We ALL sin and fall short of the glory of God. That’s why we need Jesus. I, too, had a huge problem with addiction, as well as, gang activity, selling drugs, making self glorifying music, having sex with countless women...and God saved me. He reached out and showed me, when I thought nobody could save me from my wretched flesh, that He could through the death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus. I’m sorry you’re very sick, and have been dealing with such addiction. I’m glad you’re seeing that the Lord can do all things. He works all things for good for those that love Him. I praise God every day that He saved me, and I beg Him to hold His hand on me and keep me by not allowing me to fall away from Him. I pray every day that He saves me. Our walk with Christ is ever progressive and as long as we keep faith in and glorify God, then we’re always on the right track.
Stay positive, as God is using you for something great!
In the Bible, Stephen is stoned to death and asks God not to lay that sin to their charge...present at the death of Stephen was Saul (later to become Paul). God uses us even in our final breathe, and many times we don’t see who God has touched through us. The Bible, also, states that in the end times all things will be revealed...and we will FINALLY get to understand and comprehend more what the absolute Greatness of God really is. Keep praying to God in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ, and stay strong my brother.
At 30 years old he didn’t speak but at 36 he is playing piano and singing?? Woah!
Alonzo gave you the answer but you don't have ears to hear it.
Amen!! He did tell us.
I know it! Praise God indeed! I've watched a few videos of individuals born with a variety of disabilities but I noticed a good number acknowledged God. You can't help but smile when they talk about Him.

I cried watching this...For me it's just about appreciating the Might and mercy of the Creator..even though these people are savants, they have some genius abilities. Everyone and also every animal has some special faculties. From where ? ? ...God is one, He is not Christian, Muslim, Jew or Hindu God. He is the Creator, Father of all living beings. When you look at Alonzo you can see the love and care in his features. Incredible.
The picture he sees in his head manifests into reality. A message for us all.

Leslie's case in my opinion is the most fascinating. The piano is an extension of his mind, not an instrument he plays. Clearly, for him, playing the piano is just as fundamental as walking or breathing is to the rest of us. It's effortless, he doesn't even think about which keys produce which notes, there is virtually nothing separating his mind from the piano he's playing.

The knowledge we gather; the ideas we make; and the way we express them may not be the same. But, that's the beauty of life. We get to share our experience with others. If we focused more on sharing and understanding knowledge, we'll realize that we're not much different from one another. And that being different doesn't make you a lesser human being.

"God in heaven gave me the talent." He gave away the secret right there, but we skipped that and kept asking other questions, showing that we missed the source and essence of the mystery.
Quite right, Vitor. I believe the SAVANTS have a direct communication with the Great Mystery, known as God. I think he was telling us literally that God exists and gifted him with this talent. In just the same way, The blind boy, Leslie, says that he is a musician. I'll bet he had this talent from a previous lifetime as a musician. An astounding revelation if true, it means the brain holds the storage bank of all that our soul has ever experienced.

"What was your name again?" :)
A pianist, a wizard, and a sculptor walk into a bar...
And? What’s the rest of the Joke?
"Chicken pot chicken pot chicken pot piiiiie!"
The pianist hit the piano, the wizard ordered drinks according to age and the sculpture got drunk!
This gets almost 220,000 views.........a cat video would gets over 1 million. The world is dumbing down.
Big time cat lady here ,,jeje ,, i think would be good to watch videos about personal finances , 70% people living paycheck to paycheck ,
Right!
If this generation was on to this, they’d probably self induce head injuries to see if they could become savants 🧐
I somehow come into tears by watching and listening to Alonso. His joy and gratefulness for life are rarely or neven seen.
if guys like Alonso were running the world, there would be no wars.
The guy who does the calendar dates reminds me of Dustin Hoffman in the movie "Rainman".
Dustin probably studied similar people to get his performance perfect.
If I remember correctly, the character of the Rain Man was partially based on George.
@@ElfGreatTree rain man was based on kim peak who has those same qualities
Picked up on that when he stated talking about the weather and his movements
Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid
The sculptor... has a face that is calming and familiar , but that I had never seen...what if, somehow in the chaos of what has happened to each one, there was a space, that could have been accessed by , some unknown ,higher, source. Looking for a wonderful, space, to place a gift?
As soon as the first man ( sculptur) spoke I loved him, something instantly touched my soul and brought tears to my eyes. God forgive me for my years as a young boy and man that I looked upon these brothers and sisters without compassion. I know know that he and others like him experience life with more love and truth than I could ever with for. The bible has a part where apostles ask Jesus what happened to the man who was disabled, they said what sin did he do to deserve this. Jesus says this man did not sin, for he is to show the world the Glory Of God! I saw a young man named Cody lee( blind and severe autism) on AGT play piano and sing, when he sings I see and hear the glory Jesus spoke of. Can’t imagine that just 100 years ago I. Canada US aBritain Germany and all over folks in this condition were euthanized or sterilized. Shame.
All are loved in God's eyes. These folks are gifted with amazing abilities and have left me in awe.
Alonzo is the man.
Savants are not retarded. They are just totally focused on what they are in this life to do. I wish the "shrinks" would move beyond their linear thinking!!! They are not the final authority of the human mind or how it functions.
True!
You are very wise!
they are retarded......it's ok......they are not "focused"...that's retarded....
My mind is so puny compared to their abilities.. I think 🤔 they have no fear in certain aspects !
How extraordinary are they? The piano playing truly is genius and what beautiful sculpting. Would love to ser him come up with something abstract.
All I have to say is WOW!!!!
"How do you make those small details? "
"With your fingernail"
Not memory, no formula and no Equation, the spiritual among the comments section know the truth about this ability, savants have the ability to tap into the 'Akashic Records', think of an Infinite Hard Drive that has stored everything since the beginning of time.....
wow! Dustin Hoffman captured George perfectly for the movie Rain Man. Looks like him too.
He portrays a man called Kim Peek in the film rain man. He gave Kim the oscar he recieved!
“God in heaven...”. Gave me this talent. Truth.
Yes try to let science and evolution explain that. It can't. It was God in Heaven. Praise God for blessing these beautiful people 😊
Actually, science can explain that. It's the scientists that can't. Science is not a religion, it's a way of thinking. But you don't have to if you don't want to.
oicub2 is that the same science saying there’s no difference between male and female? Or the one saying we will all die from the climate in 1980, 83, 89, 95, 2000, 2010, or now 12 years from now?
And you don’t have to believe in God if you don’t want to.
Nope.
like I said, science is a way of thinking. Science doesn't say anything, People do.
Science is a god-given gift. Whether or not you accept God's gifts is up to you.
