    This is literally the difference between hero and villain. Got bullied at school and the only reason he in calmly sitting in an interviewers chair and not mathematically destroying the world in revenge is because he made a choice in his heart so quickly that it felt like a natural reaction to be good instead. I love this man.

    It's fun trying to imagine what is going on in his head; how he is perceiving the world. Ultimately it is an impossible endeavor for a "normal" human like me, but just try to imagine seeing every number in the world as a colorful shape, an equation as a beautiful painting. Try to imagine the level of detail that this guy's brain picks up in everything he sees, walking down the street, riding in a car, etc. Remarkable stuff.

      JustAFocus I see numbers and letters in colour in my head, and it really is not that extraordinary or different from the average. He obviously has a geniusly functioning memory, the colours just give you a bit of a better memorization, for example Im almost never forgetting the first (and mostly second) letter of any word, so that by reminding the colour of the letters, i can remind me on it after thinking about it for a little while

      @@unicockboy1666 yeah but I have a feeling his brain is... a little different than yours lol. As he explained, he sees a specific color, shape, and texture for every single number. That’s why he can compute 53x131 in an instant, because the answer, 6943, is itself another shape and color and fits into his number/shape/color thing. That type of ability is unfathomable, I can only imagine what he sees in his head...

    There is something extremely important that we have to recognize and understand about the way he can find the answers so quickly. Basically every number has a shape and the negative space somehow gives him the answer. But how? This basically means the human mind can work in amazing ways we didn't realize. Makes you think about the possibilities if only our brains were formatted differently. The possibilities really are endless when you consider the seemingly infinite potential a brain can have for processing information and producing correct answers.

    I wondered the same thing. But his understanding of those numbers is probably more nuanced and complex than he is capable of describing. It's like asking someone to describe an emotion with just a picture. You can't do it. You can try, but you will never be able to explain "fear" or "love" to someone by drawing a picture. They have to experience those emotions for themselves. This is how I think Daniel experiences numbers: very personal, intimate, and difficult-to-describe.

    Calculating is nothing compared to math in itself. I was considered math genius in 5th - 8th grade just because i would be able to calculate in my mind, while other would take even longer with calculator. As time went by i wasn't that good at math as i was considered in 5th grade. Now I'm in university studying physics. I am general kid like everyone else. My mom thinks that i've wasted my skills, however she doesn't understand that calculation and maths doesn't have that much together in itself. Of course this guy has amazing abilities, but he is not math genius, just because he can memorize and calculate very well. He would be genius if he would solve those ''PI'' problems or something. And if HE IS GENIUS, it is not because of his calculating abilities.

    • @Carcaroff87
      @Carcaroff87 9 лет назад +15

      This is exactly what i always thought about this guy or Kim Peek.
      They have good skills, almost entirely memory related, but in my opinion, a real genius is someone who solves problems never solved before, or who solves problems already solved in a different, more efficient way.
      I think about Newton, Tesla, Gauss...guys like these are geniuses.
      P.S. This is all related to the tile "math genius", which is questionable...but there are other types of intelligence and, hence, of geniuses out there, not only math ones ofc.

    • @LeaderCoffe
      @LeaderCoffe 9 лет назад

      MrVeleno87 I didn't read all the message but Kim Peek and him are able to understand and read a lot of books and understand, learn them so they can be more """""intelligent"""" and become what I call a genius.

    • @Carcaroff87
      @Carcaroff87 9 лет назад

      Jean Pierre I think we have a different opinion on what a real genius is.
      And you seem to be a tl;dr guy, but i already wrote something, and i'll just add more.
      Imagine them (Peek, Tammet) spending all their life memorizing books about art and visiting most of the museums out there.
      Then they are asked to: reproduce a painting they saw and trying to paint a new one really good and innovative.
      Guess what? If they are not geniuses, they will fail in both the tasks, or surely on hte second one.
      And this is not related to art only, obviously, think of math...you can remember every formula out there and understand even the hardest theories, but that's something you wouldn't be able to do if you're not a real genius: come out with a new theory, or find a solution for one of the already unsolved mathematical problems.
      When they assign the Nobel prize, they always say "...for the great contribution to science/humanity etc"...but Kim was just a living google and Tammet is just a fast learner of new languages and owner of the record of pi, nothing useful to all of us.
      I'm not against them, i'm fascinated by their capabilities, but i can't really find a similarity between these 2 guys and people like Tesla, Galilei, Newton etc.
      In conclusion: being genius=/=being intelligent.
      There are no literature books i'm not able to understand/appreciate when i read them, or poetry, but then i place my hands on the Comedia and just heavy breathe thinking that someone was capable of such an outstanding beauty.
      P.S. Sorry for likely bad english, this is not the kind of topic i speak/read about in this language (i'm just an average internet user), which obviously isn't my main.

    • @LeaderCoffe
      @LeaderCoffe 9 лет назад +1

      Sorry i'm french and I have a bad english that's why i'm tl;dr, btw there is so many autistic savant (the syndrome) like stephan wiltshire ect Einstein is a genius and he can be a bad painter it's the same. So they are genius in different domain like calculating ect. The problem between différence with maths and calculated isn't easy. Some genius mathematician can't calculating like them but imo if there is "genius" mathematician Guy it's because they have a better logical brain and they understand more faster and better so an autistic Guy with savant syndrome is able to do the same with work. It's obviously What tammet did When he understood so many "logique d'un langage". I can say big shit I have no source I Just say my noob opinion

    It took me about 15 seconds to calculate 131*53 in my head. The way I did it was to split it up into a whole heap of simple calculations:
    1) Half of 130 is 65
    2) Therefore half of 131 is 65.5
    3) Therefore 50*131 is 6550
    4) 3*100 is 300
    5) 3*31 is 93
    6) Therefore 3*131 is 393
    7) Therefore 53*131 is 6550 + 393
    8) So the answer is: 6550 + 393
    9) Which is: 6550 - 7 + 400
    10) Which is: 6543 + 400
    11) Which is: 6943

    I think the problem here is actual phrasing of the sentence. You do not use 100% of your brain at the same time and you cannot because there would be conflicting signals that would give you a seizure. If you look at brain scans you can see certain areas are active and other areas are inactive depending on what the person being scanned is doing. I wasn't saying we couldn't use all of our brain (100%), I was saying we cannot use it all at the same time.

    I believe we all have the ability to do this and much more. For whatever reason we have a mental block on most of our brain. My subconscious brings forward so much while I'm sleeping or falling asleep. When I let my conscious mind go, I suddenly begin to hear precise conversations I heard throughout the day.. ones I wasn't even paying attention to. I'll hear songs word for word, beginning to end that I've only heard one time. Sometimes ones I've never heard at all as my mind just writes them, quickly and effortlessly. I wake up with answered questions I've been racking my brain over for months. I've lost things and found them in my dreams only to realize I knew where the items were all along. Why can't we use these parts of our brains at will? It's depressing.

      What about learning a language in a week? Multiplying huge numbers?
      How easy would it be for him to study something like math? he would be done in some hours with lectures others need years to understand correctly.
      If this is not genius what else ^^

      Except that real math has nothing to do with calculating numbers. What theorems has he proven, what scientific theories has he discovered, what books, music or art has he created? He's a walking calculator. It's a sad commentary on our educational system that most people confuse what this guy is doing with math which takes actual thought, analysis, and ingenuity.

      It's funny that I actually study math.
      And for sure math has something to do with memory. I agree it's not about calculating.But I doubt he would have trouble with a math study, even though he never proved something special which would be indeed not necessary for a math study.
      nevertheless this guy is a genius. maybe he is jsut not interessted enough in actual math..

      I have a degree in math as well which is why I stated what I did. His talents are special. I don't dispute that. If you are studying math, then you know that mathematicians do not regard the ability to calculate large numbers with any particular esteem. It is a convenient skill to have--certainly nothing compared to the penetrating insight required to solve a difficult proof. I agree memory is important. but with diminishing returns and much less relevant than analytic power. These seem to me almost universally accepted views in the math world. Overwhelmingly, it is people with little to no math background who hail this man as one of the smartest people in the world. It is akin to claiming someone who scored a 190 on an IQ test but who has accomplished nothing is smarter than Einstein.
      So that leads to the question: what is your definition of genius? Even if 'brain man' has little interest in pure mathematics, has he produced a profound insight in any field? Is a prodigious memory or the ability to calculate large numbers in one's head a sufficient condition for genius?

      My personal definition of a genius is not this guy. for me a genius is someone like R. Feynman, who "created" QED, just to name his most famous work, for which he received the nobel price.
      As you say its about the definition of "a genius". In some sense he is one. He can learn a language in a week cause he can memorize everything like a vacuum cleaner. Thats why I "supposed" it would not be problematic for him to study (for instance math or anything).
      But I have to admit you are right, a true genius (in my view) is someone who creats something new, something many people thought about before but did not had the ability to get there.
