this is very true. i feel like this is the reason math is so incredibly hard. memorizing numbers and theorems is a large part but in order to be considered a genius you need creativity.
I wondered the same thing. But his understanding of those numbers is probably more nuanced and complex than he is capable of describing. It's like asking someone to describe an emotion with just a picture. You can't do it. You can try, but you will never be able to explain "fear" or "love" to someone by drawing a picture. They have to experience those emotions for themselves. This is how I think Daniel experiences numbers: very personal, intimate, and difficult-to-describe.
Has anyone tried to find out, with his help, unknown relations between numbers? Maybe interpreting the way his mind conceives numbers, to something understable to the rest of us, could reveal us hidden connections in mathematical structures that would not be otherwise known with typical logical processing.
In the video, he sees different numbers as different shapes and colors. I think that's a big stumbling block. How would or could different shapes be related?
he is not an exception to anything...he is an example...an example of the potential of the individual mind...as long as you see him as 'superhuman' you will believe that he can do things you can't and it is this very belief that will inhibit you
Languages, maths, science and music. The most common specific interests in people on the spectrum we used to call geeks or nerds in the 20th Century. Foreign languages can be useful in countries where English is poorly spoken or understood. Conlangs, however, are not as usual. If it wasn't for English in the early 20th Century, we would have ended up using a biased language called Esperanto. Of course Mandarin Chinese, Arabic, Japanese, Korean, and Russian may be mandatory if you end up in a totalitarian state where speaking English can make you look like a capitalist enemy, which is or may be, in such states, a pleonasm
I loving watching videos of him, for me the coolest thing beyond the numbers is when he went to to Iceland and learned the language in like a few days. Frickin awesome!!!!
Senator Armstromg they probably tried to explain it quick and simply even though its not true for people who dont understand how the brain works. Our seperate brain parts communicate with electrical signals but all work seperatly and alone. His brain doesnt just communicate. It uses all parts of the brain to solve problems for example when he thinks of a math problem. The part of the brain which contains colors shapes amd such will fire and work with the rest of his brain even though it normally would not
This is interesting because I saw a video about a guy who got hit in the back of the head and became a math genius. He started seeing mathematical patterns. The back of the brain is where the brain's visual lobe is, apparently its related to visualizing numbers and math.
The beauty of this is how, with different wiring, we can understand some things oh so well, and others not at all. As he says, emotionally hi's hindered, but from his perspective other things are incredibly easy. I read long ago that "smart" people don't work harder, their brains have an easier time expressing their particular knowledge. It's actually easier for them, and they expend less energy.
That's amazing. Einstein had some colors and movements going on as well in his thinking while understanding. That process seems to happen differently for these people but much more efficient, really like super-humans.
Nature is mathematical. And everything in existence can be reduced to an equation... One of the reasons these Theoretical Physicists are siding towards "We're all living in a Simulation."
Yes, I would concur; although he is indisputably a computational genius, mathematical theory is an exceedingly more expansive and complex field of study.
This guy has an extraordinary brain. The brain that has alot of space to absorb informations and link them together. It is fascinating how he only be able to see things inside his brain. Could it be the same thing as we all see things in dream ?
This is absolutely incredible. What sort of cognitive processes go inside his head? How does he think? Or does he even think at all? These prodigies clearly have some sort of neurophysiological advantages. Maybe more glial cells, more blood flow to mathematical regions of the brain, more neural pathways or just larger brains in general. This guy memorizes numbers several orders of magnitude higher than I can even comprehend of doing. Unbelievable.
Not very far. We need minds of all kinds. The video pointed out many of his limitations which is not a negative, just a consequence of many of the positives. Need all types so do not underestimate what you can contribute to the world.

led sabbath The perception of things such as letters, words, numbers and music as colours and shapes is a neurological phenomenon called synesthesia. It's more common than most people are aware.

yes kim peek is who I was referring too. He is proof the human brain is capable of memorizing huge amounts of read information INSTANTLY and PERMANENTLY.

No, I cannot remember all of pie, but yes, I can do 53 x 131 in my head, and find cube/square roots, as well as doing something like 75384 / 127, and I can carry out the decimals instantly. Never have I picture "3d shapes." That sounds kind of weird to me. I just see the numbers. I'd like to be famous for my ability too haha
Calculating is nothing compared to math in itself. I was considered math genius in 5th - 8th grade just because i would be able to calculate in my mind, while other would take even longer with calculator. As time went by i wasn't that good at math as i was considered in 5th grade. Now I'm in university studying physics. I am general kid like everyone else. My mom thinks that i've wasted my skills, however she doesn't understand that calculation and maths doesn't have that much together in itself. Of course this guy has amazing abilities, but he is not math genius, just because he can memorize and calculate very well. He would be genius if he would solve those ''PI'' problems or something. And if HE IS GENIUS, it is not because of his calculating abilities.
This is exactly what i always thought about this guy or Kim Peek. They have good skills, almost entirely memory related, but in my opinion, a real genius is someone who solves problems never solved before, or who solves problems already solved in a different, more efficient way. I think about Newton, Tesla, Gauss...guys like these are geniuses. P.S. This is all related to the tile "math genius", which is questionable...but there are other types of intelligence and, hence, of geniuses out there, not only math ones ofc.
MrVeleno87 I didn't read all the message but Kim Peek and him are able to understand and read a lot of books and understand, learn them so they can be more """""intelligent"""" and become what I call a genius.
Jean Pierre I think we have a different opinion on what a real genius is. And you seem to be a tl;dr guy, but i already wrote something, and i'll just add more. Imagine them (Peek, Tammet) spending all their life memorizing books about art and visiting most of the museums out there. Then they are asked to: reproduce a painting they saw and trying to paint a new one really good and innovative. Guess what? If they are not geniuses, they will fail in both the tasks, or surely on hte second one. And this is not related to art only, obviously, think of math...you can remember every formula out there and understand even the hardest theories, but that's something you wouldn't be able to do if you're not a real genius: come out with a new theory, or find a solution for one of the already unsolved mathematical problems. When they assign the Nobel prize, they always say "...for the great contribution to science/humanity etc"...but Kim was just a living google and Tammet is just a fast learner of new languages and owner of the record of pi, nothing useful to all of us. I'm not against them, i'm fascinated by their capabilities, but i can't really find a similarity between these 2 guys and people like Tesla, Galilei, Newton etc. In conclusion: being genius=/=being intelligent. There are no literature books i'm not able to understand/appreciate when i read them, or poetry, but then i place my hands on the Comedia and just heavy breathe thinking that someone was capable of such an outstanding beauty. P.S. Sorry for likely bad english, this is not the kind of topic i speak/read about in this language (i'm just an average internet user), which obviously isn't my main.
Sorry i'm french and I have a bad english that's why i'm tl;dr, btw there is so many autistic savant (the syndrome) like stephan wiltshire ect Einstein is a genius and he can be a bad painter it's the same. So they are genius in different domain like calculating ect. The problem between différence with maths and calculated isn't easy. Some genius mathematician can't calculating like them but imo if there is "genius" mathematician Guy it's because they have a better logical brain and they understand more faster and better so an autistic Guy with savant syndrome is able to do the same with work. It's obviously What tammet did When he understood so many "logique d'un langage". I can say big shit I have no source I Just say my noob opinion
The Nobel Prize is awarded to those who revolutionize the world in the field of science. Mr. Tammet has a shot at changing the world, but he would much rather enjoy the limelight as opposed to making a true change in the world.
It took me about 15 seconds to calculate 131*53 in my head. The way I did it was to split it up into a whole heap of simple calculations: 1) Half of 130 is 65 2) Therefore half of 131 is 65.5 3) Therefore 50*131 is 6550 4) 3*100 is 300 5) 3*31 is 93 6) Therefore 3*131 is 393 7) Therefore 53*131 is 6550 + 393 8) So the answer is: 6550 + 393 9) Which is: 6550 - 7 + 400 10) Which is: 6543 + 400 11) Which is: 6943
+Mary's Mind No need to be rude. I was trying to help others by explaining how to solve complex equations by splitting it up into a whole heap of simple calculations.

I think the problem here is actual phrasing of the sentence. You do not use 100% of your brain at the same time and you cannot because there would be conflicting signals that would give you a seizure. If you look at brain scans you can see certain areas are active and other areas are inactive depending on what the person being scanned is doing. I wasn't saying we couldn't use all of our brain (100%), I was saying we cannot use it all at the same time.
I don't know - he can memorize. All Fridrich is is a series of algorithms and a ton of patterns that you have to memorize and recall in any situation. It seems like that suits this man's talents perfectly. I'm sure he could learn Fridrich with ease - then, it's just a matter of practicing it.
+Josh Gooch I made no such claim, and by the way you don't know everything either. Lets scale both our knowledge to that of the whole universe. You and I are almost equally infinitesimal in that regard. Thanks for the math lesson though.
Maybe should distinguish between savant, and genius. Unusual ability to compute in the head is not comparable to creative math genius such as Ramanajun.
He makes it look easy being in his condition, but it is a lot harder than you think. At this point he has probably overcome most of his problems and he enjoys his life, but I bet he wouldn't wish the same fate upon you. It takes a strong will and spirit to deal with his mind and the problems he most likely had to deal with during his life.
I stumbled across this video looking for Danie's appearence on the David Letterman TV show from 4/27/2005 but looks like it was taken down from RUclips :( This interview segment was almost as good though! Thanks for posting it :)
No, I didn't actually "see" him solve it. I saw him explain how he visualizes numbers and their relations with shapes. The one problem they talk about is a multiplication problem that many children can do in their heads. Math extends FAR beyond arithmetic. They showed evidence that he is obscenely talented at storing information, but not that he is a math genius. Wake me up when he finds NEW results in math - you know, the thing that even the average mathematicians do every day.
***** Exactly, we have calculators that can do what he does. If you had studied any college level math, you would know that math is a lot more than just calculation. Until he solves a millennium prize problem or actually contributes to a mathematical field, I wouldn't consider him a math genius.
You are very ignorant and stupid person. Can you mentally calculate numerical sums instantly????? Complex mental calculation is extremely rare Do not criticise something you cannot do yourself.
Question; A washer and dryer cost $1.75 each load and there's a balance of $.75 left on it. It cost $5.00-$10.00 $20.00, how long would it take to get every penny back.
I believe we all have the ability to do this and much more. For whatever reason we have a mental block on most of our brain. My subconscious brings forward so much while I'm sleeping or falling asleep. When I let my conscious mind go, I suddenly begin to hear precise conversations I heard throughout the day.. ones I wasn't even paying attention to. I'll hear songs word for word, beginning to end that I've only heard one time. Sometimes ones I've never heard at all as my mind just writes them, quickly and effortlessly. I wake up with answered questions I've been racking my brain over for months. I've lost things and found them in my dreams only to realize I knew where the items were all along. Why can't we use these parts of our brains at will? It's depressing.
What about learning a language in a week? Multiplying huge numbers? How easy would it be for him to study something like math? he would be done in some hours with lectures others need years to understand correctly. If this is not genius what else ^^
Michael Zimmermann Except that real math has nothing to do with calculating numbers. What theorems has he proven, what scientific theories has he discovered, what books, music or art has he created? He's a walking calculator. It's a sad commentary on our educational system that most people confuse what this guy is doing with math which takes actual thought, analysis, and ingenuity.
It's funny that I actually study math. And for sure math has something to do with memory. I agree it's not about calculating. But I doubt he would have trouble with a math study, even though he never proved something special which would be indeed not necessary for a math study. nevertheless this guy is a genius. maybe he is jsut not interessted enough in actual math..
Michael Zimmermann I have a degree in math as well which is why I stated what I did. His talents are special. I don't dispute that. If you are studying math, then you know that mathematicians do not regard the ability to calculate large numbers with any particular esteem. It is a convenient skill to have--certainly nothing compared to the penetrating insight required to solve a difficult proof. I agree memory is important. but with diminishing returns and much less relevant than analytic power. These seem to me almost universally accepted views in the math world. Overwhelmingly, it is people with little to no math background who hail this man as one of the smartest people in the world. It is akin to claiming someone who scored a 190 on an IQ test but who has accomplished nothing is smarter than Einstein. So that leads to the question: what is your definition of genius? Even if 'brain man' has little interest in pure mathematics, has he produced a profound insight in any field? Is a prodigious memory or the ability to calculate large numbers in one's head a sufficient condition for genius?
My personal definition of a genius is not this guy. for me a genius is someone like R. Feynman, who "created" QED, just to name his most famous work, for which he received the nobel price. As you say its about the definition of "a genius". In some sense he is one. He can learn a language in a week cause he can memorize everything like a vacuum cleaner. Thats why I "supposed" it would not be problematic for him to study (for instance math or anything). But I have to admit you are right, a true genius (in my view) is someone who creats something new, something many people thought about before but did not had the ability to get there.

Wonder if this guy can code software or dabbles. If he can learn languages fast he can learn a programming language, and computers are mathematical machines. He could code some wonderful stuff. Be interesting to know.
I was indeed thinking of the same thing.
if he learnt to code, he's gonna wipe out all software competition
there might be one person like him one day, who will be able to accomplish even more than that...
I know almost nothing about coding and it’s specifics, could you tell me what difference he could make?
@@genesis3041 A rather uneducated guess in the field of programming of mine would be that programmers use a lot of time on troubleshooting errors, and finding ways to do something in a programming language. If he can memorize 22,514 digits of pi and learn multiple languages, he would quite possibly come close to completely memorize multiple programming languages, this could lead to him not needing any troubleshooting or searching up something online.
I need to hire this guy to crack the lottery code for me
omg he could actually do it :O
@@frankpower1774 there is no lottery code. He could be good in sports betting
@@frankpower1774 no he couldn’t. The lottery number is always arbitrary.
@@hesh2892 Yes.
@@fezzik7619 Well, kind of. Everything is arbitrary to people who can’t see the patterns. People can’t see patterns AI can, someday computers may allow people to cheat. Perhaps some hypothetical super computer loaded with all data available could make some solid guesses.
ps. Don’t play the lottery. Go to a casino and have actual fun where cute gals bring you martinis, bliss of her body and booze will make it more tolerable 2 lose.
I'd rather a 1 dollar scratcher over 1 mega millions play.
I've scratched before and won. Like 5-50. My mom got 500 off one. Of course you will spend more than you gain (well most will) but you actually have a chance of winning. You don’t have a chance w. The main lottery. You just don’t. It is a illusion, I promise.
The chance anyone he reads this will win is like 0.0000000000000000001 percent, which is actually a generous estimation.
this is very true. i feel like this is the reason math is so incredibly hard. memorizing numbers and theorems is a large part but in order to be considered a genius you need creativity.
"I'm too smart to drive"
Has anyone tried to find out, with his help, unknown relations between numbers? Maybe interpreting the way his mind conceives numbers, to something understable to the rest of us, could reveal us hidden connections in mathematical structures that would not be otherwise known with typical logical processing.
+nikosvid
Interesting thought.
In the video, he sees different numbers as different shapes and colors. I think that's a big stumbling block. How would or could different shapes be related?
It's astonishing the way his mind works 😎. Also, he's modest and seems to be adapted to interviews and people even if his autism .👏
he is not an exception to anything...he is an example...an example of the potential of the individual mind...as long as you see him as 'superhuman' you will believe that he can do things you can't and it is this very belief that will inhibit you
Languages, maths, science and music.
Who’d have thought numbers could be so beautiful
this guys is way amazing! especially how he conquered his social personality!
I loving watching videos of him, for me the coolest thing beyond the numbers is when he went to to Iceland and learned the language in like a few days. Frickin awesome!!!!
Its been 10 years. I remember seeing this summer 2010. Time flies

I'm glad someone like this exists. I was worried that Rain Man, one of my favourite films, was exaggerating the ability of Savants.
"In a normal brain, different parts don't talk to eachother."- Yeah right...
Metaphoric of course.
The back of the brain is where the brain's visual lobe is, apparently its related to visualizing numbers and math.
one of the most interesting people ever... the way his brain works is absolutely astounding
I guess you're right, it's like convincing a Smosh or Onision fan that what they're watching is not worth watching, or even thinking about.
The secret is Eat Bananas and drink water.
will try thankyou!!
This works.
@@brosskitchens It isn't a simulation I think but it can becompared to a simulation
I bet he has more than 50 percent of his brains capacity unlocked.
Yes, I would concur; although he is indisputably a computational genius, mathematical theory is an exceedingly more expansive and complex field of study.
He actually recited Pi to 22514 places, which if you insist on rounding it up to the nearest thousand would give 23000.
from iceland. and his icelandic was not good. doesnt pronounce the sentences in the right way. but for 1 or 2 weeks its still amazing.
As far as i know, we are only using a max of 1/10 of our brain capacity. But however, great!
0:42 He memorized it by looking at it once? In the Letterman interview he said that he learned for "a few weeks".
This guy has an extraordinary brain. The brain that has alot of space to absorb informations and link them together. It is fascinating how he only be able to see things inside his brain. Could it be the same thing as we all see things in dream ?
Yeah yeah; but can he eye in the compute of a blink?
BOOOM!!!
Things that are thought impossible actually are not possible as we can see in this example of a miracle.
Unbelievable.
or maybe some of them dedicated a lot of time

This interested me very much... not from the sense of a mathematician... but I always heard Jimi Hendrix talk about seeing the music as colors and shapes.. and hearing him talk about seeing numbers as colors and shapes makes me wonder about Jimi's mind much more... was he in someways the "same" as Nick? just in a different category?
Hendrix saw colours because he was probably on an acid trip.

no, he talked about it before he ever started taking acid.
led sabbath The perception of things such as letters, words, numbers and music as colours and shapes is a neurological phenomenon called synesthesia. It's more common than most people are aware.
What he and Jimi spoke about are very true Alchemical laws, they have been known for years but not many ppl are bright enough to witness this phenomenon. So someone such as myself who knows these laws but cannot see them all the time, it is a great blessing to have someone confirm them.
For anybody to be able to do what he does even with the aid of Mnemonics is incredible.

yes kim peek is who I was referring too. He is proof the human brain is capable of memorizing huge amounts of read information INSTANTLY and PERMANENTLY.
This guy would fail elementary math, because he's not using core math to show his work. Just saying.
Lol
Einstein flunked too.
You are sadly very correct. The elite created common core to dumb down the population, make them helpless, desperate, and easy to control. The left wants everyone on welfare and the right wants the economic status quo. Smart or otherwise unusual people are extra hard to control.
Holy fuck you are stupid. He would do fine in common core math - it's not that he CAN'T do math the way it's normally taught in school, he just has a shortcut method.
To the guy who somehow thinks learning Common Core is a leftist control tactic, I mean seriously go read a book or something, just stop...horribly sad.
He could easily do core math because he can also learn things at an accelerated rate faster then normal humans could
I'm a human calculator as well (I can't learn language like him unfortunately).
Didn't read lol
The Nobel Prize is awarded to those who revolutionize the world in the field of science. Mr. Tammet has a shot at changing the world, but he would much rather enjoy the limelight as opposed to making a true change in the world.

It took me about 15 seconds to calculate 131*53 in my head. The way I did it was to split it up into a whole heap of simple calculations:
1) Half of 130 is 65
2) Therefore half of 131 is 65.5
3) Therefore 50*131 is 6550
4) 3*100 is 300
5) 3*31 is 93
6) Therefore 3*131 is 393
7) Therefore 53*131 is 6550 + 393
8) So the answer is: 6550 + 393
9) Which is: 6550 - 7 + 400
10) Which is: 6543 + 400
11) Which is: 6943
wow, want a cookie. -.-
+Mary's Mind No need to be rude.

This will encourage me to keep learning Chinese. Thanks.
I don't know - he can memorize. All Fridrich is is a series of algorithms and a ton of patterns that you have to memorize and recall in any situation. It seems like that suits this man's talents perfectly. I'm sure he could learn Fridrich with ease - then, it's just a matter of practicing it.

There is no accounting for or explaining this pleasant fellow's genius. Those who always insist on explanations will remain forever baffled.

I'm not that impressed with the title of the video. Memorizing numbers does not equate to "Math Genius".
***** Exactly, we have calculators that can do what he does. If you had studied any college level math, you would know that math is a lot more than just calculation. Until he solves a millennium prize problem or actually contributes to a mathematical field, I wouldn't consider him a math genius.

Your logic is impeccable.
memorizing numbers dosnt make u genius.
What about learning a language in a week? Multiplying huge numbers?
How easy would it be for him to study something like math? he would be done in some hours with lectures others need years to understand correctly.
If this is not genius what else ^^
Michael Zimmermann
Except that real math has nothing to do with calculating numbers.
Michael Zimmermann
I have a degree in math as well which is why I stated what I did.
