- Rex Lewis-Clack is a 13-year-old who is blind and brain impaired with autism-like symptoms, but his ability at the piano soars like a prodigy. Harry Smith talks to his mother about her book, "Rex."
This is the kind of interviewer we need these days. I really liked the way he dealt with the mother and the boy. So rare to see such gentleness these days.
He actually kept bringing up how screwed up Rex is lol

Rex is amazing and so is his mother. But I really loved watching Harry Smith conducting this interview. He was patient, kind and so very gentle. What a lovely man!

As the grandfather of an autistic kid I can appreciate the genius of these kids. My grandson is a science genius and he is 9 years old. Never judge a book by its cover, you will feel and look foolish.

You, and your grandson and those who shall benefit from his existence, are blessed. His book is yet to be written and once completed, I would enjoy reading it from cover-to-cover.
Dr D experience and knowledge arent necessarily the same thing, so its normal to assume that you are more experienced than young ones. I mean the clueless, foolish ones who survive their own stupidity grow to be the most experienced and wise ones.
People like your grandson, Rex, Kim Peek and many others are nature's way of teaching us to not think so linearly. Things don't go in a straight line and aren't black and white.

It’s amazing how the brain works. Some doors never open, but in Rex’ case others opened up that will stay shut for other people. Glad that he found the piano, where he derives so much pleasure from.
I like how the both kinda chuckled and the mom went “oop” thinking he messed up at the end, but he’s just like ,”Yeah, no, this dissonance is pretty cool.”
LOL. Someone needs to inform Mom that saying "oops" on stage is a huge no no. The boy was totally cool. 😎

That young man has an innocent spirit, we truly do not give enough credit to where credit is due. We favor image and vanity over talent like this... i hope in our unity and revelation, we can be more loving to each other by truth.
I think that it is torture for him to have to set there and "wait" for them to stop yacking to get to what he is expected to do.

I can't believe how when he gets to playing he seems like he's more coordinated in his hands this has always amazed me about these savant's, it's like they're disability go's away for the time they are playing.

Amazing talent. Who would have thought of playing Beethoven as a tango. Considering the composer struggled with hearing loss I think he might have amazed at what this young man is capable of. Taking one of his works and mixing it up into something totally unexpected!
The talents displayed by many autistic children and adults are amazing. Music, painting, sculpting. So little of our brain is used but other parts seem to come alive for these individuals.

Absolutely. It's intriguing. For the young man I care for its all about maps/routes .he can take you anywhere as he memorises what he's read. Awesome.
@@elainewhitelock5347 About maps and routes... I have autism, and I helped my father to navigate the route from the Netherlands (where I live) to Austria. He has bought some schematic maps and draw a line with a pen, so that he knows where to drive. When we all are in the car, I did the navigating as an 8 year old child. I helped him by looking at road signs and tell what direction he had to take. Google Maps didn't exist yet.
Now I am 57 years old man, but I have a very good navigating memory. Although I use Google Maps for navigating, I still can drive anywhere, where I want. I have driver's license and I even capable to drive at the left side of the road in countries like United Kingdom. I have been driving in Liverpool, Edinburgh and Glasgow. I have a car with manual clutch, but I should drive in an automatic car in countries like these.
When I am walking in an unknown city, I have an excellent sense of location. I can construct a map in my head, while I am walking. I am capable to find my car back.
I think I am highly intelligent about some areas, but I am not very awkward socially. I am extravert as well, and rarely overstimulated. Noise and crowded areas are not a problem.
All i see is the power of love, elevating the wonderful mysteries of human biology. Which humans are still in the beginning of the journey of investigation. May God Bless you all.

This young man is certainly an inspiration to music lovers and other musicians, he has this incredible talent which Im sure a lot of us have. Brilliant playing Rex.
I spent many yrs working with developmentally disabled people and encountered a couple of savants; a blind man who played piano beautifully, a man who couldn't cross the street safely but could tell you exactly what roads to take to drive to any major city in North America AND spoke fluent Spanish.
I love this interview and everyone in this interview from Rex and his mom and the interviewer. It shows how unfortunate events can be changed to great outcomes if you have love and resilience. All mothers love their children and Rex’s mother deserves a standing ovation for raising Rex. Rex I hope to hear more music from you whenever you are ready. For now, it’s time for me to get to a bookstore to buy this book. Thank you for broadcasting and sharing this beautiful story❤️❤️❤️
This interviewer is one of the best I have ever seen. Cheers to him for his kindness, compassion and intuition to record the perfect segment with this family.
Do those that berate the Mom realize that music is the only thing that brings about happiness, joy and normalcy to this young man? Some people can be so cruel.
It is very sad Issac. I have watched quite a few videos on autism, doesn't make me an expert of course. What I did find is that when an autistic child finds an outlet such as music or art, the autistic child becomes much more calm and that those that are non-vocal, become vocal.
You can so tell that she’s his mother, just by the facial structure. What a talented guy. I hope he’s still playing music and enjoying himself.

It is impossible for you to see what I see. It is likewise impossible for me to believe as you do. The proud and scoffers will have no secret reveled to them. Only the reverent and open minded will recieve knowledge. Noone beats God. The man who fears God now will not have to fear him forever. The proud athiest choose their path. As the book says, " A man has two things before him, life and death, he chooses which one he wants."

Imagine how many people would have an abortion if they knew what Rex Mother knew. Rex is a blessing from God. We have a special needs son we adopted -- what a blessing he has been for us. May God continue to bless Rex, his family and those who enjoy his wonder special gifting !!!

I find this truly amazing......a gift from God.....we have Asperger disease in our family, so we appreciate the musical ability this young man has! People with Aspergers or Autism are often musically gifted.....I love it
Aspergers is not a "disease". Diseases need cures. Aspergers is a neurological difference that would benefit from a great deal more understanding from non-autistics.

Mom is HERO. Her enduring love, patience, hope, kindness, faith, and strength, is amazing and unique. Blind and autistic? Most parents wouldnt have been able to cope and carry on - boy would have been moved into an institution probably with a helmet on his head. Not this child. Only because of Mom does he have a rich and protected life. The love and trust between these two is WONDERFUL! His musical talent is lovely and unexpected - only because Mom has been a tiger for her baby and created a safe wholeaome world for him!

@@petert1692 God can use situations like Rex to give us all a little joy. God can give and he can take away. He uses all things to give us opportunities, what we do with them can glorify or disappoint him. We are not puppets and God never promises that our lives will be easy. The promise he makes is to never abandon us. You can deny him. He gave you free will. You can walk in anger and fear and frustration, or, you can surrender to his perfect will. We like to think we got everything all figured out. You can choose to condemn or you could find peace and joy and hope in some awful situations. God loves you and wants only your faith and love. Sometimes as imperfect beings we must face the consequences of our choices. He doesn't always spare us a less than pleasant experience for our son. But, he never abandons his people. Try it, you are a smart man

As someone who used to work with people with intellectual dissabilities, the main thing every one of them had in common was their love of music.
