    I've always thought that when the luminary travels back in time at the beginning and meets his Grandparent, It's not the power of the luminary allowing this, but the power of the Yggdrasil root on the tree in the middle of the village. Because if you touch the tree after that scene, it says that the root used all of it's power. I think that was made possible only because Yggdrasil did that.

    • @LonelyBoy94

      And it was temporary too maybe the route didn’t allow you to physically actually time travel to the past but maybe it just projected an image of you with the ability to speak nothing more much like a ghost except the ability to talk and be seen because you had to give up the sword of light to time travel permanently I don’t believe it was very easy to project an image of yourself in the past for Yggdrasil

    • @tomasfong40

      I was thinking the same thing. also its implied that the luminary was destined to travel back in time since some of the stuff that you do in the past is said to have happened in the beginning of the game. I guess is more of a timeloop type deal

      when the luminary travels back in time at the beginning and meets his Grandparent it is from him touching the root of the tree. so the guy in the video is either not paying attention to the game or he forgot it. it is not a power of the luminary himself he is totally wrong on that one.

      I always viewed it that if he didn't go through those events it would have created a time paradox. If he went back in time and Chalky as a result told him to not go to Heliodor then the events would have never played out to even tell him that going to Heliodor was a bad idea meaning when future Luminary went back in time he'd have no reason to tell Chalky to not send him to Heliodor which would mean Chalky would still end up telling him to do that due to the letter. This would just create an infinite loop of logical contradictions. So doing it the way they did causes the least amount of paradoxical nonsense. Basically going back in time and changing the past creates all sorts of problems as you erase the reason for going into the past to enact said change. At least with them letting the events still play out but then providing aid to future you it could still work.

    It's an old video, but hopefully you'll see this, as I'm currently replaying the game.
    The part about the "Hero losing the powers of the Luminary to Mordegon, but it still works conviniently enough when the plot demands it" can easily be debunked.
    (This takes place in Act 2, after Yggrasil's fall) After you and your party leaves Puerto Valor, and Sylvando leaves his traveling circus in the hands of his father, you sail away to reach Zwaardsrust Region when the boat gets attacked by Alizerin, and our hero gets thrown overboard, you wake up in some random location and meet with the Seer for the first time, who tells you "Did you really think you lost the power of the luminary to the darkness? That is not a power so easily stolen" or something like it :)

  • @grapes9h5
    @grapes9h5 2 года назад +15

    My understanding of the Cobblestone time travel was that it’s bootstrap paradox type scenario. It always happened that way. Chalky takes to older Luminary- realizes his mistake then leaves the note and keystone. But Chalky dies not long after this. The real question is why didn’t he tell Amber. The answer is the bootstrap because had he warned Amber, the Luminary never would’ve gone back in time to warn him in the first place. The scene is actually important because it helps establish the bootstrap concept for later and gives the idea that destiny is meant to be. Even when you change the past it’s only ultimately to fulfill that destiny - if you’re the Luminary that is. All that said, yes the game very poorly and conveniently (or inconveniently, depending on perspective doesn’t explain it’s time travel ideas, both here and later when it’s the major engine of the plot, lore, and themes.

    I think the "Yes/No" thing really isn't bad at all.
    Its actually entertaining and funny seeing how everyone respond to your "No" response. They're all written in ways that understand just how antiquated that design is, makes fun of it, and shows off just how charming the cast is (such as Veronica forcing you to say Yes when a "damsel" demands it, or when Jade is just "stretching her legs"). While yes, you technically do get more dialogue options in something like Persona 5, your choices don't change the story there either.
    Other games with marriage/dating options typically are designed around them (Fire Emblem, Rune Factory etc...) and not just relagated to post-game as an option. Personally I'd rather DQ not go down the visual novel/dating sim route at all, but that's just me.

    There is 1 instance where there is a Yes/No, that gets one of the funniest reactions. It's in DQ VIII, after being rescued from being buried in an avalanche. When the hero wakes up, you have to talk to all your team members, when speaking to Angelo, he makes a comment about the dog that rescued you is more useful and smells better than King Trode. If you agree with Angelo, King Trode has a hissy fit. To make it even better, it doesn't force you to go back and give the "right" answer

    • @FFgamesftw
      @FFgamesftw Год назад +1

      yeah many people complain about the "yes/no" not being a real choice in DQXI but really in most games with dialogue choices it will often just change the next line of dialogue and then the characters will continue on with the exact same story beats they would if you made the other choice. Some will also give alignment type of stats but these usually at most choose the noble vs renegade ending for a game. There really aren't alot of games where your dialogue choices will drastically change the plot of the game as that would be far too much work for the developers.

    The Luminary's grandfather didn't want to create a time paradox.
    And no, the Luminary cannot just jump to the past whenever he wants. Yggdrasil can only send his consciousness there, while his body stays in the present, when near the root in the village.

  • @geekdaparaiba
    @geekdaparaiba 3 года назад +29

    You have good points about it. Albeit...
    In the case of the "time travel", it actually foreshadows an important plot point in the third act, which the Luminary goes back in time to prevent the fall of Yggdrasil.
    As for the forgiveness in the game, Vince is not the only victim of this. Krystalinda turned all the citizens in ice statues and she's pardoned by Queen Frysabel. There's implications that Doge Rotondo ratted out the Luminary and his companions to Jasper. And then... the Kingdom of Heliodor. Man, the Kingdom of Heliodor. In Act 1, once King Carnelian discovers the truth about the Luminary, orders him arrested, persecution and his adoptive hometown burned. The reveal that Carnelian was possessed by Mordegon make this worse as this event wasn't foreshadowed at all. (Except in Dundrasil and that Phenomenon city, but it's still vague). Even worse, Hendrik never pulled a Beatrix/Celes and defected after discovering the king's true nature, instead only joining the party under orders of the king. Twice. Perhaps the message of DQXI is that "All humans are sympathetic and deserves forgiveness and all monsters, as cute as they are, deserve to die". The only exceptions are the aforementioned Krystalinda (And she looks like a humanoid than a monster.), Jasper and Mia, and even then, the latter two are still humans who are monsters by choice.
    Dragon Quest XI S is a nice game, but even the most beautiful rose has thorns. At least it's not as bleak and cruel as... The Last of Us Part II.

    • @frenchfrey65

      ehhh I kinda disagree that Carnelian possessed by Mordegon came out of no where, it's clear in flashbacks early game that he was friends with the other kings including the King of Dundrasil, it's so obvious that he's not supposed to be a bad guy considering you're still sent to see him in the beginning of the game, or else the townsfolk would tell you to go somewhere else. If anything I thought it was predictable, cuz how else did Jasper get his powers? How else was Mordegon supposed to reveal himself?

    3. Party members don’t follow you in towns and their weapons aren’t modeled outside of battle

    7. The hero doesn't speak outside of being a child when he should at certain scenes
    8. Party members don't have a running animation when following you on the overworld

    3. That is a pretty big plot hole. Not sure why they added that if they weren’t going to do it again.

    One of the things I would've liked to see added was the world reacting to the defeat of the final boss in act 3. Imagine how fun it would be to travel around the world and see all the cheers and bright smiles of the denizens of the world you just saved. It would be the similar to the end of Act 2 before the transition to 3, except the world isn't demolished. And the Death Star floating over Gallipolis wasn't what people were raving about all the time like at the end of act 3. This could've been an opportunity to allow the player to reexplore the world for a final time and celebrate the long journey. Maybe even certain kingdoms could've been hinted starting a rebuilding effort. I understand that this is to allow the player to refight the final boss using the JRPG trope that makes time revert before the final boss is defeated, but they could've worked that in other ways (Looking at you tockle time machine tower). Regardless this is still my favorite game of all time. My suggestion would've made for better closure imo, because I'm not gonna lie, I felt very empty when I finished my first playthrough (amazing games will do that to you).

    • @FFgamesftw
      @FFgamesftw Год назад

      tbh I think the great celebration of the world only really works if the world has suffered great loss at the hands of the bad guys. If you went around at the end of Act 3 it would go something like this.
      Party: "Hey everyone we just beat Calasmos"
      World: "Ummmm who is that exactly?"
      Party: "An ancient evil entity that was planning to destroy the world"
      World: "Oh well, I guess good job, that would have been pretty bad if you hadn't stopped them"
      At the end of Act 2 pretty much everyone knows, is terrified of, and hates Mordegon because of what he did. Taking out Mordegon and having the world celebrate works because of the destruction he caused. While Calasmos did drive many monsters around the world crazy it's really hard to connect him to any of those events.

    The marriage system was definitely undercooked, it wasn’t even all there in the original version, you could only marry Gemma (That’s why she’s the only one that gets a nice illustration). This is disappointing since DQ was one of the first jrpgs with marriage options in V and they were really well done.
    Time travel didn’t make sense but that just fictional time travel for you. If the hero had never gotten himself jailed then the whole chain of events that caused him to time travel and warn his grandpa would’ve never happened so he would’ve gotten himself jailed and then… You get the idea. that whole section was pretty hearth warming so I tend to give it a pass.
    Imo the dumbest thing was when the hero went back in time, everything is back exactly as it was at the point he returns… Except Michele who is back to being alive for some reason even if you saw her die way before the point you time travel back to.

    • @Ageleszly
      @Ageleszly 3 года назад +3

      Marriage in V wasn't an option. It was its defining feature you could say, the whole story revolves around the family of the protagonist I suppose that's why some people expect something similiar for the sequels, but in truth each game focuses on different underlying themes. I think you can't really write a game with marriage- and believeable familiy live, without that having a huge impact on the story.

      I think the point of Eleven traveling back in time to when Chalky was alive is more than likely because of the Yggdrasil root in the village. Think about it, it’s the only root you never physically interact with once, and yet there was a flashback scene in the village. It’s the only logical explanation. It was Yggdrasil sending Eleven back in time not just to start the chain of events, but also maybe to hide the sad truth of Cobblestone a little bit longer.

    Two, during the MMA in Octagonia, it annoyed me how it's meant to be random team matchups but yet all the teams you face seem to have absolutely perfect synergy with one another. I know it would have been underwhelming if it actually was "random" teams, but the fact that all the teams you face seem accustomed to their partner and no one else, I think maybe it should have been that the Luminary was added to the lot and only he had to draw for a team.

    But after seeing the "juice" almost kill him he realized there was no way he could continue faking it anymore.
    I like that Rab could accept that he was only doing it out of desperation to help those he cared about and forgave him. And even offered to give him a way out of the problem. After which you see him break down and tear up over such kindness.

    Dumb thing #7
    "Silent characters are different from emotionless characters"
    What i mean?
    Luminary is (apparently) very close to Gemma(Childhood friends, Gemma has a major crush on him, the entire village is waiting for them to get married, and they ship them together, also they're the only two kids in the village of their generation, the other kids are either too old or too young, so they can only relate to each other most of the time.) Well, soon after being sent to prison and escaped, Luminary goes back to his village, only to find it destroyed and everyone is missing, as far as i remember, Luminary and Erik believe that everyone died, including Gemma and Luminary's step-mother(the second person Luminary loves the most, if we exclude “grandpa” because he already died of old age a long time ago). So Luminary for the entire Act1, he is sure that everyone he ever loved is dead...but in ACT2 we learn that Hendrick managed to convince Jasper to just capture them and take them to prison and during the apocalypse caused by Mordegon, Luminary meets them again(at Last Bastion) and his reaction is the same reaction that a rock has when it learns that it won the lottery(Yeah, rocks don't have reactions, that's the joke XD). Luminary has a very mild nearly non-existent reaction, while at least Amber(the mom) and Gemma are in tears and sobbing, and they talk about how happy they are, but Eleven/Luminary? He doesn't even flinch!
    Major fans of DQ's saga told me that it's a tradition, or it's iconic, or "Link from Legend of Zelda is the same and yet you don't complain about it!" and i explain why i don't complain about it:
    Link even in older games, always had some degree of “indirect talking” we get to choose what he says(in BotW we can read what he says before "silently saying it"), we simply don't hear him say it, but we have him yelling and screaming when he fights, and we see him change facial expression: We see him happy, we see him sad, we see him angry and so on. It's not much, but it's still more than what we see in Dragon Quest games.
    In Breath of the Wild, we learn why Link is so silent(at least that version of him): The weight of being the "hero", the fact that he is forced to be a knight, and that he must be the best one around because he is "the chosen from the Master Sword" and all these responsibilities stress him to the point that he simply goes silent and sticks to the role of a silent guardian of Princess Zelda(Zelda herself even gets mad about it in the flashbacks, until she starts to understand him, she learns that like her, he has a role, he doesn't like it just like her, but he reacts differently compared to her)
    You(DQ's fan, who loves silent protagonists and doesn't want them to speak) can justify that the Luminary is the same but it's really not: Link spends several years with the knowledge that one day he will fight Ganon, and he prepares accordingly by constantly training, and serving Hyrule as a soldier...while Eleven learns about being THE luminary in the present, with his Grandpa's letter. Eleven spends his whole life believing he is a random kid with a weird birthmark on his hand. He trains enough to deal with weak monsters(or not even that, MAYBE, aside a few flashbacks about Eleven playing with Gemma or spending time with Amber we don't know much about his childhood). What i'm getting to is that Eleven/Luminary has no reasons to be silent, there is no trauma or stress to make him silence him.
    I conclude by saying that i don't mind Silent Characters, i do mind(in a bad way) characters who are emotionless for no reason at all. Because personally, in ACT2 if I was the Luminary and i just learn that my mom and my "almost" girlfriend are alive, i would hug them for hours while in tears and making weird happy noises! ç_ç
    Last Thing: Toriyama isn't good at writing stories, and it's even worse at writing romances. You can see it both in Dragon Ball, and Dragon Quest.
    Chichi, Goku's wife, is more absent than Bulma, Goku's childhood friend(basically) during Dragon Ball Z.
    Gemma, Luminary's (implied) canon romance, is more absent than Jade, Serena, and Veronica.

    This game frustrates me. For one it's gorgeous to look at, it oozes charm, the voice acting is really solid (except for Michelle the mermaid who I wanted to strangle), good combat system, neat crafting system with the mini forge, and nice music. However as you pointed out, the silent protagonist just doesn't work in this day and age. they didn't even give him various facial expressions to go along with what was happening. He's the most important character in the game and yet he's just a shallow husk that walks around with the other characters, which is weird because when he goes back in time he meets his younger self who has a voice and talks. The story is interesting in some areas, and absolutely bored me to death in others

    game was perfect. Don't change anything... and make a bunch of new ones along these lines. I find the excessively overcomplicated RPGs of today are frustrating and annoying. This is relaxing and fun. This isn't a marriage simulator... and if it was, I wouldn't play it. The marriage thing was just a fun easter egg.... and it was fine.
    But I'm totally with you in the giant spider/kidnapping thing.

    I've read somewhere long ago that those Yes/No questions aren't really supposed to be actual choices, but a way to make the player stop for a second and notice that this is a point of no return or an important moment in the overall story.
    If there were no pause in these moments, some players would go right through it without even noticing that a new character is in the party or that the status quo has changed.
    Dragon Quest at least make these weird questions a bit funny by adding stupid dialogue when you choose the wrong answer.

    1) I Agree, but this Is Just an opinion
    2) Again it's a matter of taste
    3) This Is not a plothole, it's a narrative device called soft magic system.It's when an event Is caused by the use of a magic Power that Is not limited by specific rules of the story and this gives It a mysterious vibe. In this case the luminary didn't voluntarily go back to the past. This mysterious Power of the luminary Just activated in that moment. Usually this Is used to give info dump like this(in fact it's used Again in this game for a similar reason) You May not like It, but it's not bad writing.
    4) I Agree, but this Is really Just a nitpick
    5) I agree

    About the time jump. He had to keep quiet about it because the hero's actions led to the time travel in the first place. So if he warned him he would make there no need for the time jump and a paradox would happen, destroying the universe by tearing apart the fabric of time itself.

  • @marcojacinto824
    @marcojacinto824 2 года назад +1

    He doesn't time travel. Is more like a mind-journey thing. His physical body goes nowhere and that's why Erik says the Hero was spacing out, like in a trance or something. I interpret it more like he contacted his adoptive grandfather in a dream or through a shared vision and that's how granpa knew he had to leave behind the letters and the keystone. We was using the World Tree root as a pshychic link to his grandfather in the past. The whole game explains over and over again how the Tree is the source of all souls, keeps the memories of everyone and the Hero is a chosen avatar to the powers of the World Tree. It may all sound over the top but it's fantasy, although the rules and laws of this world are explained plenty across the game. The marriage system I agree it's lazy and nonsensical but not the powers of the Luminary.

    Here are some other dumb things.
    In the battle against Alizarin, Alizarin shouts how the Luminary has returned. I mean at this point the Luminary and friends have already killed two of his Spectral Sentinals so did Mordegon not know already? How did he not know that two of his elites were already dead? Did he know and not tell him, if so that is a really bad idea.
    Yggdrasil Leaves. OK so in the game there is a tree called Yggdrasil that is the source of all life on Erdrea, and its leaves represent people, if the leaf is destroyed a person dies. YET Yggrasil leaves can be used as items in order to revive people? Where do the leaves come from? When you use it does somebody die? This is somewhat contradicting lore.

    • @FFgamesftw

      To answer your questions:
      1. They don't live in the modern world with cell phone, email, etc. So it is very likely that Mordegon just simply had no idea you had killed them as he assumed they were still performing their duties. Perhaps he had wondered why they hadn't checked in and would investigate soon (especially with the darkness leaving Heliodor he could probably see from his castle) However it is curious that Jasper who saw you right before the Tyriant fight didn't immediately go and inform all the other spectral sentinels that you were alive.
      2. I think the leaves just represent a life and bloom any time a person is born but aren't literally the life force of that individual. If they were you'd have people dropping dead all the time randomly just because there was a storm that ripped some leaves off of Yggdrasil. Also people could commit murder just by plucking leaves which would be rather silly.

    The reason for chalky not changing the past is because those events must happen for the heroes journey to begin, if chalky told the hero that no matter what, he must stay in cobblestone then the world would be doomed. Atleast with his letter, he can apologise for what will eventually come to pass

    There are some more dumb things I noticed as well, such as the leap you take with Erik at the start of the game, and the power of friendship stuff at the end of Act 2.
    When you escape Heliodor with Erik, you both take a leap off a cliff face and fall into a forest a hundred or so metres down. You both survive, thanks to believing in the power of the Luminary. What bothers me is how this power is never used again. Perhaps the power of friendship stuff I'll mention next is a repetition of this power, but it's not too clear.
    When the Spectral Sentinels return to sneak snare the party, they are freed from the snares with the very strong faith they have with the Luminary. If this is that power, all is forgiven. What bothers me far more is how the Sentinels returned to do this in the first place... You killed them all except for Mia, who was redeemed. They all vanished into purple dust. How did they return? This is never explained, and no hint is provided later.
    Maybe someone can help enlighten me on these things.
