Cried when heard on Radio he wrote this to his father which gives it even more depth. I was 14 when lost my father 49 years ago today he was the same as in this song and can still feel his love and protection in my life. god Bless David Gates wherever he is today 10th January 2014
What a WONDER TRIBUTE to his father! Most people don't know he wrote this in HONOR of his Father. He must of loved his father as much as I loved mine... 🌹🌹🌹
This is the very best song I have ever heard, ever truly listened it, it grows on you...played this when my mom passed away in January, I listen and I cry...I love you Ma, and I miss you with all my heart...David Gates, you are the very Best, thankyou for writing this masterpiece...
he reminds me of my late husband... and meaning of this song is very touchy and makes me miss him more than ever... it's really hard to let someone go..... love you, valdek... always
No matter how hard I try I can not get thru this song without shedding some tears. To my Mother and Father, even now as a great grandfather now I still miss you so very much. I dedicate this song to you. I think of you often and are missed greatly... 🌹🌷🌹🌷
This is dedicated to my ever dearest husband who has been with His creator, this song reminds me so much of him, I LOVE HIM so much...even if he's not with me now he will remain in my heart- he is always be remembered though we can never go back to before ;-)
💖 I believe that we will meet our beloved husbands in the God's Kingdom when our times come as it's written in the Holy Scriptures! Let us keep them in our prayers till we meet them!🙏 "O my God! O my God! Verily, thy servant, humble before the majesty of Thy divine supremacy, lowly at the door of Thy oneness, hath believed in Thee and in Thy verses, hath testified to Thy word, hath been enkindled with the fire of Thy love, hath been immersed in the depths of the ocean of Thy knowledge, hath been attracted by Thy breezes, hath relied upon Thee, hath turned his face to Thee, hath offered his supplications to Thee, and hath been assured of Thy pardon and forgiveness. He hath abandoned this mortal life and hath flown to the kingdom of immortality, yearning for the favor of meeting Thee. O Lord, glorify his station, shelter him under the pavilion of Thy supreme mercy, cause him to enter Thy glorious paradise, and perpetuate his existence in Thine exalted rose garden, that he may plunge into the sea of light in the world of mysteries. Verily, Thou art the Generous, the Powerful, the Forgiver and the Bestower. ‘Abdu’l-Bahá (Baha'i prayers)
Someone has probably said this, but David Gates wrote this in honor of his dad. It is a tough song to listen to. Most of us have had at least one person we love leave us through death. Jesus of Nazareth is the only hope any of us have to know eternal life. Like the thief crucified next to Jesus, all we have to do is call out and ask for Him to save us. Ask humbly, and sincerely, and He will save you.
I think of my own father (who passed 14 years ago) every time I listen to this song. What a tribute and what a most beautiful song. David Gates was a genius with his lyrics and music.
listened to bread back in high school. .. had a 8 track player and wore it out listening to the best of bread. .. awesome. ... :) thanks for sharing ....
Lovely lovely song - this is my life in the 70's - bitter sweet memories of a love I lost - Peter Richards / Shanklin - Isle of Wight - 1974 - where have you gone????
Apparently Peter it was written about his dad when I found this out the song had a totally different meaning to me Hope this doesn't make u feel bad it can mean anything!
Feels like heaven when I listening w/his song...this song was great,so sweet nd I can't find the words to describe nd to express hw I feel😂 many thanks for sharing😘👍
Most people think this is a love song, BUT if you listen it actually is about D.G.'s mother! People be sure you get that chance to say how much you love them, before it's to late
I gave up everything I had life my heart my I still lost my wife a year-and-a-half ago to cancer but always remember I tried to that I lost your to the Lord and he only loaned her to me anyway but always remember to tell your family you love them a million times a day when I heard this song When I was a teenager in school I thought it was great but now I understand it on the level I wish I never did
John my wife also had cancer. I take great solace in listening to the music we shared over the years. You may never read this but if so give a listen to Warren Zevon's Keep me in your heart. It gets me every time
What's annoying is, to you, "your = your", but to me = "your = belongs to you", and "you're = you are." I know I am being ultra pedantic here, but I am drunk, and to me, you might as well be saying CAT when you mean DOG. You seem to have no concept of written words, and the fact that they can sound the same as other written words, even though their(!) meaning is completely different. It pisses me off even more because I see it rubbing off on myself and others.

I miss my Dad. After all these years, I still miss him. I guess I always will.

God teaches us how to love, if only we would listen. ,...I used to listen to my "Bread" albums over and over. The lyrics are edifying.

Such a sweet, sad song; reminds me of the happier times.
Billy Dean wrote this song about his father. He explains how he wrote this song in the 1994 live performance with David Gates. It's here on youtube.
