The problem is that unless you grow up in a musical family, u are never taught how to listen to music. People get obsessed by the image and life of a singer or band, almost trapping them into liking unoriginal trash and tricking them into not even thinking about whether the music they’re listening to has any real value or not. And what’s even worse is that some people probably can’t even tell the difference between music with musical value and music which has none. Of course the word value is very broad and subjective but essentially if you have no musical understanding at all then the musical complexity which you can accustom yourself to is much lower. And since many people do not have good musical understanding it’s a big shame because the music world is flooded with artists that 100% do not deserve to take the limelight. What has Justin Bieber done to change the course of music ? You can say he’s a protagonist of a musical movement of the early 2000s but what has he actually achieved other than fame ? Musically speaking, absolutely nothing. And yet people who actually are changing music as we speak, for example Jacob Collier, are unknown amongst non musical people. There is no longer appreciation for true talent (other than a good voice) which in my view is very very dangerous. Hopefully with more access to musical genres people of the younger generations will begin to have a more mature musical understating but otherwise it is all pretty depressing. Sorry for the rant I could go on for another 7 hours.
