    rule number one of lunge whips - they are NEVER meant to TOUCH the horse at all never mind actually whip the legs or anything else. Not for ANY circumstance. I cannot understand why a professional trainer would even think of doing that - how is any lesson afterwards going to be productive with the horse focusing on the whip instead of her voice, the poor horse will be traumatised. Its not the purpose of the lunge whip at all. Shes only sorry she got caught, she cannot call herself a trainer.

      @@fazertace6837 My experience (seven decades) of people doing bad things is that judgement never enters into the process. Such actions are not ill-considered - they are not given ANY consideration at all.
      The veneers of civilisation and humanity are VERY thin. We are ALL capable of unthinking cruelty and stupidity and, similarly, of judgementalism. They are two sides of the same coin. We ought keep both tendencies in check, but in the world just now, the devil seems to be rolling that coin almost everywhere. We should all consider:

    I was speaking with a good friend's dressage trainer last year (yes I know it sounds like one of those stories: I was speaking with someone who knew someone else....). Nevertheless, this person is a very well-respected international dressage trainer who teaches their clients how to be kind and compassionate with their horses. I asked them about their relationship with Carl Hester and whether they knew Charlotte. This person said pretty much what this lady said: that Carl is a wonderful, natural horseman who treats his horses with real kindness and a gentle hand. He goes over and above what many do - from the ordinary rider to the rich competitive owners - and gives them as easy and as natural a life as he can and they flourish as a result. I don't believe there is anyone who will come forward to contradict this. On the other hand, Charlotte was incredibly harsh by comparison and often pushed her horses and those of her clients beyond what they were capable of to get results. And this dressage trainer had rehabilitated a number of horses that Charlotte had previously taught and in some cases ridden. Horses absolutely will submit to pressure and I've no doubt she pushed Valegro beyond what many would consider reasonable. And despite Carl being the more skilful, kind and capable rider, Charlotte got the results and that's what dictated what people thought of her and subsequently allowed her to get away with her training methods. I think it is very said that Carl and her other colleagues will get tarred with the same brush as her - at least by some. Although they are not entirely innocent. I have no doubt Carl and others will be aware of her harsh training methods as they work so closely together, but it's not always that easy or straightforward to confront the issue head-on. Especially when the person in question is winning Olympic gold medals and bringing in huge amounts of revenue from sponsorship deals etc. You only have to watch a few interviews with Carl and Charlotte on RUclips where they talk about Carl having to tell Charlotte to rein-in her overly competitive nature. I don't believe for one moment this is the first time Charlotte has done this. The ease at which she behaves in this video strongly suggests she's done it many times before. And the fact that she's comfortable enough to do it knowing that many clients film their lessons, just tells you how comfortable many in the equestrian community are with this behaviour. From your average rider, to riding schools, to show jumping yards, to eventing and dressage yards and most certainly racing yards, this behaviour is seen throughout all of these disciplines worldwide. The best we can hope for from this situation is that it shines a strong light on animal welfare and makes people rethink how they approach their training with these beautiful creatures. Re-education is what is needed. If they can't do it with kindness and compassion, in partnership with the animal, then they should go and do something else. And equestrian sports should be pulled completely until these terrible practices are stamped out completely.

    This is something that does go on in dressage behind closed doors and the FEI and BD need to look at themselves for demanding more and more of riders and horses in dressage tests. I withdrew my membership some months ago from BD because grass roots riders with ordinary but lovely horses are not able to compete on a level playing field against the pros because BD is demanding more and more flamboyance and not judging the correct training of ordinary horses. If an 'ordinary' horse is going in a fluent, supple way and performing movements in the dressage test that are soft, rhythmic and there is good harmony between horse and rider it shouldn't matter that its legs aren't up around its ears and that the hind leg is coming so far underneath that it eventually causes arthritis and the horse breaks. I know many good sympathetic riders who are training their horses in a lovely way but not getting the high marks that some pros are getting because they are not prepared to put their horses under such stress. BD and the FEI needs to get their act together and look at the way the sport is going. This is not a one off!

    More than just trainers whipping! Rolkur, bits, over extension ! FEI should be ashamed of themselves all round! Sadly everyone is looking up to this standard of "dressage". As well as jumping horses at unreasonable heights pulling them up by the bit to get over the next jump when they are exhausted! Bits whips spurs all deemed fine by calling it "aids". The equestrian world is warped towards tradition and ego it's mostly negative. Sports involving animals at such high stakes should not be supported because the animal always looses, always.

      I agree with much of what you say; however the "dressage" of today is not as it used to be. The tradition of gentle classical dressage has been lost. From what you have written I'm sure you'll recognise the name of Nuno Oliveira, who mastered all the movements without resorting to rollkur or any force on the horse. Today most equestrian sports are (like everything) in pursuit of instant gratification; if you can't achieve what you want, just add more aides! The ethos of gentle horsemanship is fading away, tragically.

      Proper classical dressage is indeed a sport and has been since the Olympics started. It takes years and years of discipline and hard work. The problem is that there is too much money to be made, so unscrupulous trainers are short cutting the correct methods in favor of strong bits and rollkur, which overbend the horse and produce big movements without proper collection and soft hands. It looks spectacular but is horrible for their health and balance.

      I believe the rider involved was a teenager receiving training and was pressurised not to report it. Some peer pressure involved but well done to her for finally speaking up. Dujardin isn't the only one, it's a problem in the higher echelons of international dressage - judges permitting rolkur in dressage are also culpable. Rules need to be fixed, fast!

    At least her abuse disclosure will bring attention to the systemic and ongoing torture of dressage and sport horses, and hopefully of the many riding disciplines that harm horses. Dressage needs to be omitted from the Olympics until there is a strong system in place that protects the horses from abusive training and riding practices.

  • @ridinreiners
    @ridinreiners 2 месяца назад

    I doubt very much that this was a “one off” for this trainer. She is trying to salvage her reputation, but she looked pretty comfortable whipping that horse’s legs. Many and most trainers from all disciplines train horses because they love them, but don’t kid yourself, abuse happens across the board by some people when the stakes are high and the pressure is on to win prestige or a lot of money. That said, I question why the whistleblower chose this time to release the video, when she stated it was filmed 2 1/2 years ago. If she was truly concerned about the welfare of that horse why didn’t she report this immediately? It appears she was more concerned with some kind of vengeance against the trainer than she was in trying to protect the horses.

    Sadly, Charlotte appears adept at ‘horse-whipping’. It begs the question if this is how horses are trained for dressage.? Causing pain to any animal to get it to do something unnatural or more acute to a natural movement to it, is horrid. Shame on Charlotte and the sport.

    Ex horse and hound editor talking crap with her head up the FEI's arse! If she is saying this behaviour is uncommon, she was obviously oblivious when Andreas Helgstrand and cesar parra were reported to the FEI for abusing horses during training, as for Dujardin shes obviously always had that side of her nature when it comes to training she just hides it well ,it makes you think how she trains her own horses when she is brazenly abusing this horse which isn't even hers im no equine trainer but why was she whipping a horse that was obediently going forward what did she think she was achieving! Im with everyone here. i hope She is held accountable for her appalling behaviour towards that lovely horse.
