    The key word is it will “fit” on a 1/2 ton, fitting and being a legal payload are two different things. The dry weight is 1700lbs, optioned out its around 2100lbs. Then add maybe 300lbs of clothes, pots & pans, food and camping gear and you’re at 2400lbs, plus a driver, passenger and the dog will add around another 400 lbs so now you’re at 2800lbs of total payload but you probably carry around another 100lbs of just in case stuff. So lets just call it 2900lbs of payload. The vast majority of 1/2 ton pickups have 1500 lbs of payload +/- 200lbs. Optioned out crew cabs can be as low as 1000lbs. I think Ford has a special heavy duty 1/2 ton at with around 2200 lbs of payload. Don’t let the dealer convince you that you can make it work with upgraded suspension parts, the payload sticker on your truck is the legal limit regardless of aftermarket parts. You may also affect your warranty on that new truck. I know that there are lots of folks running a few hundred over but if your payload limit is 1500 lbs and you’re carrying almost twice that you’re doing more than just fudging a little.

      You need a bare bones regular cab if you wanna put this on a half ton, and that is already pushing the limits. I would go 3/4 or 1 ton with this much weight.

      I bought a travel lite, just under 1300 lbs for my half ton Silverado, took out microwave, want to switch out Dometic air conditioner for a fantastic fan which will lower a bit of wieght, manual jacks, use liight compact camping dishes and pots, carry a small light screen tent, everything is light and compact (more hiking/camping type stuff), except food. Have air bags and it carries well. Rarely fill the water tank, but carry a gallon of water, depends on where I'm camping and travel distance. Sometimes tow a small flat bottom aluminum boat.

Everything I built out in the van comes ready to go in this Lance, and probably in a far more efficient setup for energy and water consumption and application. I'm looking at this Lance and at the NuCamp Cirrus 620

    Most 1/2 ton crew cab trucks have around 1500 lbs. total payload. Add 200 pound driver and 150 pound passenger and you are already down to 1150 loaded camper weight. Always read the GVW on door tag of truck. Then subtract passengers and cargo. What is left is camper weight.

    I will say check your cargo capacities. Most 1/2 trucks have cargo capacities of 1,700 to 1,900 lbs. I had a Titan XD and the cargo was 1,900. So even if this camper comes in at 1,700 and then I get into my truck it is over capacity. Don’t forget you have to take passengers and any other cargo into account. My opinion is this is not for a 1/2 ton truck. Check your owners manual of your truck. Be safe!

    • @westernsharpie
      @westernsharpie Год назад +1

      You're 100 percent right. Legally it's too heavy for 1/2 ton trucks thats assuming you're gonna add the additional payload like people, tools, bags you know the regular stuff lol. You'll be well over the legal GVWR. Wouldn't want to be in an accident and deal with DOT afterwards.They don't really go over that stuff in these videos because thats the scary part nobody wants to talk about or hear. Beautiful camper, I'm sure it's very well built, but just good to know the other side of things.

  • @richeastmain4031
    @richeastmain4031 4 года назад +67

    That weight would pretty much max out the capacity of a 1/2 ton truck. There wouldn’t be any left for the driver, passengers or a cup of coffee

      @hard life FTW EBK maybe 40 years ago when half ton meant actual half ton payload. Right now, a Chevy Colorado has a minimum payload of 1445lbs, up to 1700lbs (oddly enough that’s roughly the same as the 2021 Ram 1500) . So, a 1/4 truck actually has a ton and a half payload. A 2020 Sierra half ton has a bed load ranging between 1570lbs-2280lbs depending on cab configuration and trim package. Easily able to handle the camper and payload. If you add helper springs or air bags you could increase that even further. Heck, a one ton Sierra has a bed rating of over 2 tons. So, yeah, the 1/4 ton, 1/2 ton, and 3/4 ton designator for trucks really doesn’t mean anything anymore at least as far as payload is concerned.

  • @RealSuperRando

    She’s one of the best demonstrators of RV’s on RUclips. But there’s no way this is for a 1/2 ton truck. I have a 3/4 ton 2019 Chevy double cab with a 6.5 ft bed and a 9500 GVWR rating. With my butt in the seat I weighed it with a full tank of fuel and it weighs right at 7000 lbs. that leaves me 2500 lbs for payload. The 1700 lb weight of this camper is dry weight and wet weight is 1900. Add 100 lbs for the microwave and A/C options and your close to 2000. Now add another passenger in the truck and your at 2150. That leaves 350 lbs for a portable generator and other miscellaneous supplies and camping equipment and I’m at the max weight for the truck on a 3/4 ton. No way for a half ton, especially with a 5.5 ft bed. You’ll be 800 to 1000 lbs over weight in an average 1/2 ton and in emergency handling conditions it’s going to be a dangerous handful, especially with the height.
    Since this is an entry level camper you’ll probably be dealing with a limited experience RV driver and you’ve got a mix for disaster. Doesn’t matter how many airbags or increased leaf springs you put in, the manufacturers rating for your truck is what the insurance companies go by. When the lawsuits start flying you’ll be on the block.

    I've read that Ford and Lance worked together on this to be compatoble with a F150. The weight is just right for a 2 wheel drive model with the optional heavy duty suspension. Who really drives one like that? We all have our crew cabs with 4 wheel drive. Adding air bags will not help increase your carrying capacity. Also why is there not a stove exhaust and hood?

    • @joereyes664
      @joereyes664 3 года назад +2

      The 650 wasn't designed with ford, but Lance did word with Ford to special order an F150 that could haul it. You could upgrade the tires, suspension and gearing on a "standard" half-ton, but like others have said, this really is getting into three-quarter ton territory.

    Please lose the sink, shelf and cabinet and make the shower stall bigger. You already have a sink 2 feet away in the kitchen and people can use a shower caddie.

    Not sure why they wouldn’t have put a flush fitting range top?! There is ZERO counter space with that range. Lance’s design just doesn’t seem to be very thoughtful in the use of space. I’m planning on a truck camper next year, but not a Lance because they just don’t use space efficiently. I will say I love that U dinette👍🏼

      @SoliDeoGloria 07 Do me a solid and check out the definition of "Karen" on Wikipedia and/or Urban Dictionary. Expressing reasonable opinions that don't necessarily square up with your opinion doesn't = a Karen. We're talking about investing 1000s of dollars in a camper here, not a crazy white woman yelling at a black man in Central Park.

      Agreed. Although this floor plan would not have the space for it, I prefer a Propane range/oven rather then a Microwave oven. That way if I am not connected to 120V I still have the use of an oven.

      You could probably get a custom cut piece of stone countertop to sit on the stove for when not in use. I know it something added to buy, but could create extra "counter" space...

    I really like this unit but that fridge would annoy me being where it is. Surely once you have bedding on the bed you will keep having to move it to open the fridge door? Plus it’d preclude using a mattress topper or Froli system, no?

  • @rogerdavies6226

    not for any reasonable half-ton truck. By the time you get a truck built up to carry it you could have it put it on a one ton cheaper and better (I think)

      It appears to me that the fridge in that corner of the over cab bed is actually a convenient 'eye level' place to access items from a standing position as PJ did. I'm not fond of having to bend way down to get items out of a under the counter fridge (which looks like the only other option in this unit). As someone else asked, would adding a mattress topper or thicker blankets hinder the fridge door from opening?

    The best way to haul and camp in these with a F150 is to mount it onto a $1700 dollar aluminum trailer...seen a lot of this in Canada. Re-sale on a truck camper is better than a travel trailer. Trailer is easily towed by a car...nevermind a truck. And there is room for bikes and camping gear in the box of the truck.

    Question for the reviewer or any owners if this model - does the bedding get in the way of the refrigerator door? The door looks pretty close to the mattress there. And is there room to add a mattress topper or Froli sleep system without blocking the refrigerator door? I know that the mattresses fitted by most RV manufacturers, Lance included, suck.

    Why not make a deeper sink stainless. Needs to have a pull out cutting board. The wet bath is a plus. I love tankless water heater. Instant on.

    Beautiful camper! But I don’t see how it’s recommended for a half ton? At almost 1,700 dry and almost a ton wet? I have a dodge 1500 I doubt very much it could handle this kind of weight

  • @shoveljunk-americanpatriot7603

    Lance makes the 1172. I think dry weight is 4318. What 3500 truck can legally carry that unit. I don’t know but I’d like to know.
