Little did people know that a Black woman from the small island of Grenada would be crowned as the first black woman to win Miss world.
#1 Miss Greneda so well deserved, the most beautiful of them all, although Miss Africa South was gorgeous too!

Miss Grenada, Jennifer Hosten. Miss World 1970, she's one of my favorite Miss World winner. She is a class of her own. Being a flight attendant, gave her an edge over other competitors.
She is also the only competitor who had been trained as a BBC presenter which gave her confidence when speaking and automatically made her very popular with the crowd.

After all these decades, the video of the Miss World 1970 event emerges to silence all those who thought Miss Sweden should have won. Grenada was the clear winner from the start. Her final walk was truly royal.
Well apparently the first prime minister of Grenada was a member of judging panel, and he persuaded the other judges to vote for Jennifer! I don't BELIEVE that for a second! You can tell me to vote one way, but you can't vote FOR THEM! And I'm STILL confused as to why Bob Hope crowned her when Miss World 1969 was in attendance

Great image and show, those were the days Miss WORLD was so elegant and no like the modern version of the contest today , by the way Miss WORLD 1969 never crowned Miss WORLD 1970 on the show. I think the crown is spectacular I wonder what happened to it, most of crowns used from the 60s till today are great, but I like the golden one the most , I wonder who owns it and what was it made of.

@@andresclark1983 Así es, esto empezó porque en el 69, Penny Plummer no pudo entregar la corona por actividades laborales, entonces se le pido a Omar Sharif coronar a Eva Rueber-Staier. Pero en 1970 Eva si se encontraba esa noche, pero para no perder esa tradición se le invito a Bob Hope para coronar a Miss Mundo.

Just wondering how many times did Grenada participate in Miss World? This might be the only time they did, perhaps?
Grenada participated 3x at Miss World. After winning the title, they never join again until 1996 (Unplaced). The last time they competed was 2007 (Top 16).

Noticed that Eric Morley has to remind Bob Hope to refrain from having small talk with the winner after crowning her as the ceremony to have her walk the stage as the new MsW is about to commence.
This funny with this pageant the only is important for them is earned money ..lol about this lady she's win the pageant in that year because in 1967 sign to belongs to a commonwealth . But that island in 1974 wants become in a free country.since that year .the UK didn't have more rights to impose their rules lol

Yes, Jennifer Josephine Hosten is the first black Miss World. And South Africa is white while Africa South is black, both South Africans.

I think non-whites were not allowed to enter the original white-only promoted pageant, so they chose a Miss Africa South. In the early or late Eighties, non-whites were chosen as finalists for the main contest, but the first POC won in 1992.

Why are they all back stage ? Very odd.
Well, this method has been used since the first years of the creation of the Miss World, and was last used in 1988, since in 1989 all the finalists and the continental queens they remained on stage
Meanwhile in Miss Hong Kong from 1973-1986 all finalist lined up to wait for result at the stage, when emcee announce the Top 3, the remain contestant will go back to the stage.

At that time, South Africa was experiencing one of its most tense moments, Apartheid, where whites were granted more rights than people of color, then Morley (creator of the contest) had an idea, to send from South Africa a white candidate, and a person of color (Miss Africa South) But this was not much to the liking of the people, because as of Miss World 1978, no candidate from South Africa would be admitted, for Apartheid itself. In 1976 some candidates tried to boycott the competition, as there was no Miss Black from the United States or from any other country.

I agree, that crown was hideous. When I first saw the thumbnail, I did not believe it was actually a Miss World crowning. I thought it had to be some kind of spoof or something.

There was a huge controversy in Miss Grenada winning, as many people charged that Eric Morley, in response to the criticism of letting in two contestants from South Africa, manipulated the rules as they went along to make Grenada the winner. It was revealed that 4 of the 9 judges gave Miss Sweden #1 ranking but yet she ended up in fourth place. I have always thought the Morleys had too much of a say and influence in the selection of the winner ( the overwhelming number of European and former territory winners for example). At Miss Universe, there would be no dispute as the contestant with the lowest rank score wins. Great that a black winner was crowned but in the end, unlike Janelle Commissiong at Miss Universe, it was a victory manipulated to appease the loudest people.
And Grenada’s prime minister was one of the judges, what a coincidence.
Not to mention; the Prime Minister of Grenada was one of panel of judges.
