but singing a song in a softer voice doesn't necessarily imply more emotion.Tarja did also modulate her voice for the intended effect and she imbues all her songs with just as much emotion as does Floor. it all depends on how one listens for nuance in the voice. it is documented that her ballads is what caused most of the swooning in the audience. the band was ., for good reason, highly fearful of their future, sincre she constituted the heart of nightwish.
please! it is not a matter of preference but one of simple appreciation of sheer splendor

No it isn't. The 1999 version is much more beautiful than this.
The perfect rendition of the perfect song for Tarja's operatic skills. LIVE makes it an even better experience, just imagine being in the crowd. While several vocalist could do this justice it will always be Tarja's song and this is perhaps her best version/rendition ever!!! Magical is the right way to describe this song and it truly never loses that magical feeling no matter how often you listen to it. Hey loving all types of music just makes you a better well rounded listener of one of the true human gifts, the ability to communicate emotions and feelings in a unique way with sounds and instruments that only highlight that gift. Great reaction as usual!!

she looks so heavenly during and especially at the end of the song when she thanks the audience and places her head into her folded arms.... all that is missing is a halo over her head, Shakespeare would have been at a loss for words ----just mesmerizing!!!!!! you Kristin are our angel,... so few react to this performance or Tarja's exquisite delivery of "into the sun"
That was what the spotlight is for. The medieval painters had not mastered 3D portraits. The halo is not a ring but encompasesss the whole head. A glowing radiance. Or it would if it existed.
just uncanny how she modulates her powerful voice at just the sweetest spots causing it to reverberate so satisfyingly..astounding to this day..brings a flood of tears.to my eyes...just taking those two extended vibratos right before the solo, by themselves, make the whole delivery so heavely.. i best stop listening or i'll succumb to another Tarja mildmelt.

Yep, here I am again, I see Tarja I click. lol This was one of the songs, if not *the* song that first got me into the band. I think someone I knew recommended them waaaaay back before they got super huge over here (not trying to be one of those kinds of "before it was cool" people XD), and it really was her singing that won me over. It's not that the rest of the band weren't kicking ass or anything. Only, lots of great, kickass bands around then with good lyrics and performances, but she wowed me. So yes, she'll always have a special place in my heart, and those memories when she was with the band. Back when I had no inkling of the drama to come. Good times back in the day with an amazing band.
And respect, as always, to Anette and Floor, great vocalists in their own right.
Still thinking back to the original and the official video, for me, thinking of her singing it is just always one of those very peaceful, make you feel safe and in good hands, powerful songs.

A bit more as far as picking things... Sometimes it's a bit of band hopping. One suggestion leading to another, or a band featuring an artist that maybe I hadn't heard before.
An example? Someone in my family likes Slipknot a lot, and suggested I try Apocalyptica because Corey Taylor was a guest vocalist for their song "I'm Not Jesus." And Apocalyptica has had numerous collaborations, so might lead to The Rasmus via Lauri Ylönen, guesting along with Ville Valo best known for HIM, in their song "Bittersweet," or Lauri with them doing "Life Burns." There's other collaborations, which can be a fun rabbit hole in and of itself.
Someone else knowing I liked Nightwish, back in the day, told me to check out Within Temptation. I think the first song I heard by them was "Mother Earth" off their album also called Mother Earth. Also can highly recommend their album The Unforgiving, and there are videos up from that one, including "Faster", "Shot In The Dark" and "Sinéad." And as I'm sure others mentioned, Tarja guested for their song "Paradise (What About Us?)".
This may sound silly, but I'm liking both of you Kristin and Lexa very much. You pretty much said out loud the things I've had in mind listening to this and some other NW classics. (Since 2005 or so; not one of the kool kids either lol)
You sports are really nice people and our silly little ball of a planet needs more like you.
Which video the 1999 one or the 2nd from 2005 when they did this slower tempo one with the band. Created a midevial battle with horses and knights in armour etc. Slightly slower tempo then the original. Also Tarja wore that same gown in the video.
The song was done under pressure from Finland's tourism board. They wanted songs for that years Solar Eclipse. The instructions were for a 4 min song. They got a 7 minute one instead.
This version was released on ONCE (2004).
The album blew up worldwide and allowed them to do the ONCE upon a Tour. Ending on this night, October 21, 2005. Hartwell Arena, Helsinki Finland. With a crowd of 11, 500 in attendance to welcome home the conquering heroes.
It was after this concert via the infamous open letter they fired her.
She had a sealed letter with instructions to wait until the morning to open it. Meanwhile at 2 am they published it on the bsnd's website. They all knew she was going to be fired. She didn't. Nor did her husband and manager. That caused bad blood for many years though now its over. I know she's sung with Marko a few times over the years. And of course Floor and Tarja were friends then and still are to this day. They sang together at a festival in Germany. Floor was Tarja's guest and they did Over the hills and far away. The sound quality suffered as each of the ladies kept asking the sound guy to turn down her own mic and raise the other one's mic instead. Humbleness, grace, love and joy from both and the fans.
Such selflessness is so rare.
There was never any bad feelings between the ladies and Floor asked Tarja for her blessing to join Nightwish. Showing how she values politeness and the friendship. NW wasn't Floor's first gig and other jobs would come along. Friends though are not so easy to replace. That is why you'll never hear Floor sing Bye Bye Beautiful. A hit piece and spiteful attack on Tarja . Good manners, respect, tact, grace are qualities we'd all do with practicing more of. The world would be a far kinder place.
Since the first time i heard nightwish i was hooked. I always say that tarja may come to sing me asleep her voice got that something that take you to places where you have never been.

This one actually was recorded in 2005 just before they let Tarja go, and they have not been talking with each other since that. Which is sad in many ways... Besides Marco they all came from same small place from Finland and have been friends since they went to school. Ok, now here is a special one for you to watch. Things chanced a little bit in 2017, when Tarja and Marco were singing in the same show for first time in about 12 years. And this is the show... It´s from a "Raskasta Joulua" ("Heavy Christmas" in english) tour which various Finnish metal musicians do together before every Christmas, whit some visitors from abroad as well. Songs are christmas carols transcribed to heavy versions, and almost all of them are in finnish as is this one, so you cant understand any of lyrics... Ive loved ALL THREE singers . Tarja is just. 5well Tarja. Words dont describe. So tiny big voice. Her and Floor have dueted on Ovee the Hills. Anette is so maligned but really she was put in a bad place and no one really healed until after 2012. Now the band seems like a band of misxhievios pirates haveing a romp. Floor is a good frontqoman to link the band to the crowd. I do miss Jukka. Kai is damn good but justnot Jukka.

As much as I looove Floor, I give this one to Tarja. It had to be sang classically. The song is slow and Floors tone is too light, style she chosen somehow leaves too much empty space, whilst Tarja's darker tone and classical vibrato fills and fits the song much better. I know Floor can sing classically too, but she just decided not to and that was mistake, in this case. Ever dream is one more song, which had to be sang classically, but Floor also decided not to.

i personally suspect that she was instructed to concentrate more on soft,cuddly style or belting than a classical approach. i was a huge fan of her's in her previous bands vocal delivery. she sang with a beautiful classical timbre, even belted with a strong classical flavor.

The singers are different, and it all comes down to personal preference.
And to think that Tuomas (songwriter, keyboards) did not even want to write this.
He was asked through the record company, if I'm not mistaken, to write this for a solar eclipse in Germany.
The song had to be exactly that long, as to last through the eclipse.
I think he said that he did not want to do something like that again, because of the restraints put on how to write the song.
I'm glad he wrote it, though. It turned out beautiful, and the lyrics fit perfectly with an eclipse!

Jukka - the drummer, is pronounced 'Yoo-kah' and same with Tarja, the J in her name is a Y sound too, so it's Tar-ya. She rolls the R in her name, so it's kind of like 'Tarr-iya'

oddly enough, Floor has a well developed classical timbre but foresakes it for a soft and cuddly whimper. i would love to see her render it in a classical fashion.
