One of the early Songs, it is about the solar eclips "two hundred and twenty two days of light will be desired by the night". Because that's the amount of time that went by before the eclipse (11th of August was the 223rd day of the year). At that time their german record Label asked to write a song about it. One of the terms was " not longer than 3 minutes", Knowing Tuomas, he made it 4+
But it only feels like it after 2 minutes. I wouldn't mind if it was 10 or 15 minutes long.♥♥♥

Its a beautiful song from Tuomas. Whether Tarja or Floor perform this, it is just magic.
The original single was sung by the original Nightwish singer Tarja back in 1999. It was a huge seller in Germany (and Finland), and set the stage for the success of Nightwish's 3rd album 'Wishmaster' 🤘🤘

I would say that this sing was written for Tarja's voice by Tuomas and released in 1999. Floor can obviously sing this song but it wasn't tailored for her voice.

Hi Bisscute,I enjoy your NIGHTWISH reactions. My wife and I just got back from Los Angeles. We saw NIGHTWISH on Friday and Saturday night. Floor was AMAZING! We were able to get some beautiful pictures and videos of both shows. NIGHTWISH was the best band My wife and I have ever seen. We both are in our mid 60s and seen hundreds of concerts from the 70s to present and we were TOTALLY BLOWN AWAY. One other thing the NIGHTWISH Family are the friendliest people we ever meet. ❤️
An incredibly emotional song that always brings a tear to the eye, but to see Floor break down at the end of the performance in Antwerp a few weeks ago after what she has been through has just made it ten times more emotional again.
This is still among my top five favourite Nightwish songs. This is the first time I've heard it sung by Floor, and she's done that thing she does where she pulls your heart out of your chest, fills it with all the feelings it can handle, and then gives it back to you at the end of the song.
This might be why we love Floor so much.
I just saw NIGHTWISH LIVE at an old theater in San Francisco last Wed., and I have to tell you that Floor sounds just as good live as she does in the studio. I had crappy, last minute, nose bleed seats where the acoustics were not great. The opening band was good, but so loud that I could NOT distinguish one instrument from another and barely heard the vocals. BUT, Tuomas knows to turn the volume down to suit the venue and it made a huge difference. They sounded great and Floor even has the vocal power to drown out the guitars. People who left after the last song missed out, as the band were taking their bows, Floor did an operatic vocalization that dropped everyone back in their seats. The way she controls the crowd and sucks you in is simply stunning.

I was lucky enough to see Nightwish in San Francisco and both shows in LA. Everyone was beyond at all three shows.
By beyond i mean there are bad, poor, mediocre, good, wonderful, amazing, and great performances from musicians and singers/vocalists, even the songwriters, composers, and lyricists. Then there are the few who transcend and are just beyond wonderful, amazing, and great. Jukka the bass player is very good but obviously we miss Marco. That said Jukka seemed to fit in with band and we get to hear Troy as backup for Floor. Floor was definitely Beyond in all three performances. You should enjoy yourself in October. Your anticipation will built each day as mine did for my approaching three events. Enjoy and thank you for all your reactions.

Hard 2 believe that only 2 members of Nightwish (Keyboardist/ songwriter Tuomas & guitarist Emppu) played on the studio version of 'Sleeping sun' (the rest were vocalist Tarja, drummer Jukka, and bassist Sami)... and this live version was w/ Floor (vocals), Marco (bass), Kai Hahto (drums) w/ Troy (madolin/ flute/ pipes)
There is music that entertains you.... music that moves you.... and then there is Nightwish. I've heard this song many, many times... but every time it feels so good. just to let your tears flow, relax, stop worrying about all the bad things in the world. Thank you!

The biggest strenght of Floor Jansen is not just her versatile beautiful voice, but also her ability of being a real storyteller while singing to the crowd. Almost as if she is speaking face to face to every single person in the crowd. And ofcourse a unigue stage presence i hardly have ever seen before in my life.
Thanks for this beautiful live version, but when I first started discovering Nightwish nearly 20 years ago, one of the very first music videos I found was for this song. It’s such a powerful ballad.

It sounds unbelievable, but currently Floor Jansen is on a German tv show called „Sing Meinen Song“ where she covers songs of German pop stars. It runs on VOX 20:15 German time in case anyone is interested.

There are two bands who make me really happy whenever I listen to them: Nightwish and Electric Callboy. This song "sleeping sun" is one of my favourite ballads of all times. I also like Tarjas interpretation of this song from the live concerts back then.

There's another version at Tampere not far from some of their homes, Floor sings from an elevated stage surrounded by fans. It's beautiful. I'd say it's good, but with Nightwish that's a given!

have you reacted to "The Islander"? (live in Tampere 2016) It's one of Marco's main songs that he sings. You're kind of new to me. I've been watching a lot of your videos, but haven't seen them all, so if you have, just don't mind me. But if you haven't, it's a MUST for any Nightwish fan, especially if you like Marco's singing. (and yes, I'm well aware he's no longer in the band)

Definitely check out the original by Tarja too, it's slightly different and arguably even superior.

As always I have the feeling that Floor sings directly at me - at the same time the song is sad and lonely, as if the 'I' in the lyrics sings to herself, alone in the night. I felt for a while that the 'I' must be the sun itself because Floor sings so majestically. But it does not fit in the lyrics. Maybe it should remain a mystery.
Sleeping Sun was launched on 11th of August 1999, the same day with the solar eclipse which occurred in part of Europe and Asia that year.
Now if you take the exact verses which contain "222" you have:
222 days of light will be desired by the night.
coincidence or not, there are exactly 222 days starting 1st of January till August 10th inclusive. - valid for non-leap years.

You would have to do a reaction of Floor Jansen, when he was in his previous band "Revamp", in the song "Disdain Live at Graspop (2010)", you would be amazed with what he is capable of doing with his voice.
Nightwish are experts in giving it just the right amount of bass, guitar, solos, etc. It doesn't mean that they're like machines or that there isn't any emotions. Quite the opposite. They're just devoted to making perfect pieces of art, and no one is trying to get into the spotlight on other players or art's expense.

Yeah, Nightwish is one of those bands that sound even better at the concert, than most the time in recording.
Of course the theatrical approach and stage special effects makes it even that more impressive. Tickets usually are 60-80 €:s 0er person. Cheaper ones I mean. But we'll worth it.

I think it speaks towards Toumas love for fascinating phenomena, like the Solar Eclipse that this in part speaks of. As shown by the two lines: "I wish for this night-time to last for a life-time." And: "Sorrow has a human heart, from a god it will depart."

Lovely reaction to a beautiful song. Floor totally nails this beautiful performance but this is one of the few songs where I like Tarja's version just a little bit better. Her dark operatic voice is just a better fit for the music and lyrics. You are right about the instrumentation much more pronounced than in the older recorded version with Tarja. Though the Tarja version is very good too, dancing Neotango to this song is more challenging in this version.
Wish you would comment on a live with Tarja. And of course go Finland!
This one of the only super early Nightwish songs (pre-Once album) Floor absolutely nails, her flexible pelt heavy style struggles a lot on the songs from the first few albums (especially with the power metal songs) due to her tone (and maybe pride?) not allowing her to sing them in full head voice like the original versions were sung
But this particular performance she absolutely destroys! (in a good way)
Even though I am a huge Floor fan, I also really like this song performed by the first singer of Nightwish Tarja.

The song "Sleeping Sun" was written for Taria and her classical voice. Although Floor is an exceptional singer, I like the original version with Tarja much better here. Unfortunately, Tarja's last concert video with Nightwish doesn't show that to advantage. But you can hear it clearly on the studio album.
