This is my favourite meal. As a boy, I'd been to Switzerland with my school, via the train. After a week, we all arrived back at Euston station after travelling for hoursand. We had a couple of hours to wait before our train left for our home station. I had some money and was hungry. The cafe at the station was getting ready to close. I went in and the lady asked me what I wanted. I asked for beans on toast. The toast was perfect, and the beans had been in the heated container all day and were very sticky. I got every last one. It was a meal fit for a King, and I've loved beans on toast ever since.
What a lovely story. I think the memories we get from good meals can be so important, they remind us of those happy times and friendly people every time we eat them.
In my family in the US the beans are actually baked. We soak them, drain them, add pork (ham hock, bacon, whatever we have), finely chopped onion, sweetener (sugar or molasses), and depending on who is making it other things like chopped tomatoes and/or bell peppers. Then they go in the oven (or modern slow cooker) or Dutch oven over a campfire and are baked until tender. The recipe varies by part of the country but they always get baked.
I know its a matter of taste and depends on where you grew up and what was available but i find Heinz baked beans rather tasteless. Grew up in New Zealand and always had local brand Watties ❤❤ ABSOLUTELY THE BEST Ive also tried just about every brand ive ever seen on a shop shelf -- didnt think much to them either. I have cooked Boston Baked Beans many times trying to replicate Watties, its not the same but is delicious 👍👍 more a one pot meal with ham hock, onions, bell peppers, , (I put carrot, celery, garlic and chilli- sometimes spinach) and make cornbread to mop up the sauce😋😋😋
Grew up on beans cooked with dark brown sugar, dark molasses, ketchup, mustard, apple cider vinegar, and finely chopped onion. Sometimes minced garlic too. Baked for several hours in the crock pot, oven, or simmered on the stove. Super yummy!

Here in the United States I can't buy the Heinz Beans sold in the UK unless I get them from a specialty shop that imports them. That means an extra cost for a tin of beans ($4.50 from Amazon) and I just won't pay it. Now, however, I guess I can make them myself, so thanks again Rik.
Exactly what I came here to say! Although I do bake the beans on low once they’ve been soaked (about 3-4 hours at 250°F) with the sauce ingredients. I use America’s Test Kitchen method for soaking/brining beans and then baking them. It works for me every time and all I do is check and stir about every 45 minutes. Beans turn out tender, but not blown out.
Heinz beans in the UK are about £ 1.00 or $1.20 but Aldi's do a tin ( Bramwells ) for 42p or 50c and they're a lot better than Heinz . Best served with cheese and onion pie and mashed spuds
In Alberta these beans have increased from $0.59 cents to over $3.50. They now are $1.59. I made some with Molasses but I did not like them. This recipe looks like it will taste better. Also the last time I bought Heinz English style Beans there was an inch of liquid on top of the beans, shrinkflation.
Hey, I don’t know where you live in the States, but if you ever get up here to Canada, we have Heinz beans just commonly in all our grocery stores. Maybe you could pick up a few tins to bring home. Your dollar goes a lot further here.
Hi Backyard Chef, personally Heinz have lost the plot now and they only make beans and sauce but there off their rockers personally 😅😅😅. I was in the merchant navy for over 10 years . We had a uk chef that did a spicy baked beans on fried bread recipe that blew away the crew including the captain. Our budget for food was pitiful so he would always order the cheapest baked beans in the uk and pimp them up himself. He gave me the recipe when I retired. Really simple. Fry white bread slices in lard. Spread with English mustard. Make beans. Cheapest canned beans, add butter or margarine, teaspoon ketchup and brown sauce, Jamaican pepper sauce ( like Tabasco), teaspoon honey or syrup, cornstarch slurry to thicken gently. Add more margarine .Add to fried bread. Depending on how spicy you want for brekkie a pinch of cayenne, madras curry powder or chilli oil. Eye opener after a bottle of rum and a long night 😂😂😂😂🎉🎉🎉🎉

Our church had a children's group meet on Wednesdays, and my wife and I were the designated cooks/chefs. Every meeting had a theme, and one night it was Cowboy night. What do cowboys eat? Then I remembered the Blazing Saddles campfire dinner scene involving beans. It took 2 days to prep enough for 40 people, but there were no leftovers. Great recipe and thanks for sharing your version, Rik.
I’ve made baked beans for years. I add a very little bit of molasses and I use the famous brand tomato soup instead of tomato sauce but other than that the same! They taste so much better!
Wow Rik those beans look great , they certainly look the same as tinned ones , what a great accompaniment to a lot of your pasties and pies thank you , Amanda xx👏🏻

@@Hatbox948 Baked beans for breakfast would normally be eaten as part of a full English (as it is known) and most people wouldn't eat that everyday, unless you're in a hotel or someone cooks it for you. Baked beans go with many different meals, like a meat pie, on toast, on a baked potato. It is a versatile food that is cheap (in the UK) and a good source of protein. A good comfort food and a quick snack
The British eat more tins of baked beans than the whole world put together. Over 2 million tins are used everyday here. As a nation - we might play a serious part in climate change!!
Never seen beans made before they look delicious 🙂. being from the uk beans on toast was always a quick go to at any time of day nice handful of grated cheese on top 😋
I don't buy Heinz - I buy the cheapest brand, cut up an onion in them on the stove & stew, low & slow. Going to have a go at making these - really grateful you have posted recipe & demonstrated how they're made. I like the idea of fine tuning them to suit my taste - I hate beans which are too sweet. Thank you ever so much for posting this vlog. It is greatly appreciated by me.
At last, the recipe for the sauce ! Thank you Chef Rik ! To save cooking time, we put the beans in a pressure cooker for approx 38 to 40 minutes. Then make a sauce with tomato paste, honey, pre- cooked shallot, a dash of cloves, garlic powder, and a small bit of prepared mustard. Will try your recipe for the sauce.
Hi back yard chef. What a very good presentation ,all the information you could wish for. I’ve not done this recipe before but I’m going to try it out. Love watching your videos all those great old recipes of which I’m pleased you’re making them,so thanks ever so much 👍👍
Will be making these!!!! My brothers used to cook me beans on toast with cheese grilled in the oven. It is sure to be better with this recipe. Thank you, Rik.
Thanks for this recipe. I love baked beans (used in many soups, stews & salad etc recipes), but the store bought tinned ones wreak havoc with my insides! I've learn that if you soak beans in some bicarb of soda it does help degas them. Now I can eat baked beans in relative "comfort" and without worrying about anything embarrassing happening for hours afterwards...
I start with dried navy beans, pressure cook them for 20 minutes, then drain and add all the other ingredients (secret ingredient: mustard powder!) and simmer for four hours. It works just the same in the oven or in a slow cooker, but doing it in a stew pan on the stove means the pan fits in the fridge easily and there will be enough for several meals. Cheap and tasty! Baked beans and brown bread is a Nova Scotian staple.
Australia here. I love beans on toast, but never thought about making my own. Yours looked absolutely superb! However, I was disappointed with the small amount you put on 3 slices of toast. I would have put on at least double that amount! Now I'm drooling!
What a great idea.I am going to try doing the first part in my electric pressure cooker..supposed to take 30 mins.I will let you know if it worked..Heinz are 2 ,50 Euro a tin now in Germany and there are not really any other makes to write home about. So thanks again Rik.:))
I haven't paid much attention to baked beans since I was a kid. In the US they're treated like a side dish and not a main meal. I had them for the first time last night as a main dish on a potato. Yum! The only thing better would be to make this delicious recipe! Gonna crack on today! Thank you, Rik.
I had 2 slice of buttered toast (browned) and Heinz Beans while watching this. I have to admit your beans looked delicious 😋 but that toast looked more like warm bread! 😂
I just had beans on toast two nights ago. As someone stated on here, Heinz is my fav, but hard to find in the U.S. except specialty grocers. I can't wait to make these, as I can regulate the sugar to my taste. Brill, thanks Rik.
I am looking forward to making your British beans. I make Baked beans in the Instant Pot with all the ingredients, no cornstarch, water to the top of the beans. Under pressure 1/2 hour. Keeps the kitchen cool. If it’s too wet, take the cover off and simmer to thicken another 1/2 hour. The flavor improves with the extra time. I grew up in America’s New England eating baked beans heavy with molasses. I now prefer less sweet, un-sweet versions.
Thank you so much. I’m in Canada and they are so expensive. I have been looking for recipes to make my own in bulk but couldn’t find. Thank you. I love your channel. Missing my British food so much.
In central Minnesota is a small rural town whose anual comunity summer evemt is known as Bear Hole Bean day Beans prepared in large pots buried in a pit dug the ground that a wood fire has burned down to coals -they bake for hours and setbed with bread and potato salafs and cole slaw
Ah Ho Minnesota ! Wow that Bear Hole Bean day sounds fantastic. I am from N. Dakota and live in the PNW My Norwegian kin were farmers in the old country and homesteaded N Dakota, They came to Minnesota first and my Great grandfather stayed on in Fergus Falls. I commented on the Native American way of cooking beans in a fire pit. LOL and then I saw your comment I have been to many NA Encampments and eaten many wonderful dishes of baked beans, but never done in the old way. like that. We cook up stuff everyone brings for the feast , and at the smaller gatherings folks just bring dishes from home for the feasts. Baked beans are a specialty .. they get doctored up using canned baked beans. plus .lots of brown sugar and little ‘ Smokee” sausages. The women, mostly Grandmas, cook in an outdoor kitchen on propane burners… One time there was a suckling pig baked in a pit overnight, but the cook was on a strict diet -no salt, sugar or fat. for the rest of us, either. .We were anticipating juicy succulent roast pork, it was . more like jerky. LOL i have a native heritage from my father His ancestors came from Wales and the Netherlands. and a Cherokee grandmother..My husband had a mixed heritage similar to mine., his ancestors came from Prussia and a Cherokee great grandmother..In late summer at harvest time, Our Native tribal association and guests gather for Green Corn Ceremony. giving thanks for the harvest and laying down our grievances. Whatever else we eat with the beans, we always have corn on the cob.and potato salad made by the Cheif’s wife., her speciialty..and fry bread..yeast bread dough , shaped into flat rounds and deep fried. i wish my father was still alive so i could make him some of the Welsh dishes Rik has shown us.. he would love that.
First of all, I enjoy this channel. The insight into the making of dishes I've only heard about on tv has been eye opening and fun. This recipe is really making me laugh. If I am following along correctly, you basically add more ketchup to the ketchup, then water that down with a stock, barely give the extra ingredients time to boil down and intensify, then eat it? And the beans are never baked, even a little? I get that Heinz beans on toast is a huge deal in the UK, but I will never understand it. Not gonna deny, American style baked beans can be way too sweet, but we add many more flavors to ours. And they usually get baked. For those wanting to yell me down, google Heinz ketchup recipe then do a comparison with this recipe. The only difference is this is thickened with cornstarch slurry and not corn syrup. I bet this tastes very similar to Spaghetti Os, which are a tinned treat most commonly fed to children in the US.
Ketchup is tomato puree, vinegar, sugar, and spices and corn syrup (commercially). I am not questioning your recipe. I just find it interesting that Heinz is selling baked beans that are just flavored with a sauce that is just ketchup. Every ingredient you added to the beans, if cooked down longer, would make what is essentially, just ketchup.
This is heinz own reipe list says: Ingredients: Beans (51%), Tomatoes (34%), Water, Sugar, Spirit Vinegar, Modified Cornflour, Salt, Spice Extracts, Herb Extract. So yes if cooked longer would make ketchup. Best, Rik@@staceyn2541
🤍💛🍀⚪️ ☺️👋🤍 Thank You Rik , BC maybe I will try putting Vinegar next time. I didnt check out Your recipe yet. I sometimes make quick and easy Baked Beans , with Toamto Sauce ... Dijon and Tabasco , or Franks Hot sauce though. In My Home cooking I would make Beans and Franks ( Vegan Hot Dogs ) and Franks and Beans. I really like Baked Beans ( with added Dijon and Hot Sauce ) topped with Sour Creme and Green Onions , maybe Cheddar , Vegan. Lately making Nachos and Tacos with too . When My Husband would make Beans n Franks n Franks n Beans , He would put Yellow Mustard instead , not Dijon. When We visited London , there was a Hotel in Kensington Chelsea that would serve a crock of Baked Beans , White Bread ( for toasting ) Tea and Coffee for Breakfast everyday . I remember My Mom always having a can of Baked Beans as part of the Cupboard Items : ) 🙏💗🤍
I love baked beans. So versatile! You can add butter for a creamy sauce, or curry powder to add a bit of oomph. And why not gravy powder, an Oxo cube or spoonful of Bovril for extra umami? Thank you for this recipe, I'll try it this afternoon!
You can use the bean water when making bread. That is how I use up most of the bean water. It doesn’t affect the taste of the bread since it is not strongly flavored. I do the same with the water I boiled sweet corn in.
Rik, I'm a Yorkshireman living in southern Italy and you cannot buy Heinz, HP etc style "baked" beans here for love nor money! I tried making my own with tinned Borlotti beans and, widely available, bottled Italian tomato sauce but they're never quite right. Thanks for sharing this recipe, it's quite a revelation!
In Italy, beans are for soup or maybe pasta. My grandparents were from southern Italy and they lived on beans and greens. My father never ate "American" food until he was drafted but he developed quite a taste for it while he was in the army. He loved canned beans with hot dogs, and I guess to him, it was exotic!
They look the business rik 👌 nice info in the description too, didn't know Wigan was that big for beans. Bet that sauce would go well with homemade ravioli 🙃
I'm paying crazy money for lite beans here and being diabetic i have had to stop sugar so i'm going to try this with Monk fruit sweetener , Thanks so much for this recipe.
Great recipe and I will be trying this and to freeze some portions. I have bought some tins of beans in Thailand and in time the tins expanded so, in the bin. I was reluctant to buy any more as I had to add sauces to get a flavour so I can tailor your recipe to suit. I make pies using your recipes which are spot on and I found sheets of flaky pastry in Macro.
I found a can.of the British Heinz beans at Kroger here in american.midwest. i heated them up and ate them on toast. wow! It was really tasty! Eating them with the toast was a game changer!
Heinz Beanz are so delicious. They were made and sold in the States until the 50' or 60's, but Campbell's Pork and beans outsold them. Now you can only get them imported from the UK, or the Heinz Vegetarian Beans from Canada, which is getting harder to find. Thanks for the recipe! And I would say half as much tomato should be a good adjustment, and maybe a tad less sugar?
Thats another winner Rik ,I love baked beans, great recipe I've seen others that I wouldn't make it, but I will try your way, I make all my own sauce now from your recipe, Heinz products have gone very expensive, £4 for a big bottle of tomato sauce. cheers
Ouch! All the prices and starting to soar! Thank you, Allen. Best, Rik

i just discovered your channel . everything looks so good i am going to try to make suet pudding but will have to use lard but looks so good. I live in Jacksonville Fl and accidently came across it and glad I did, I love British tv shows and the whole culture and my ancestry is English and Scotland so there you go . I am orig; from NC s9 I am sure they came in on Ellis Island and ended up in the Carolina's. Thanks again for the great recipes .
Most American beans have less sugar catsup , have mustard , some have salt pork , onion , and mollassas . those that are truly baked dont have corn starch as they thicken by the long cookimg in a crockery pot , and are thick , savory, and I prefer the savory beans over the sweet
Rik, I would experiment with your recipe a little by adding some Worcestershire or Henderson’s sauce to the mix and to add a little bit more sweetness I would add about a tablespoon of black treacle or maple syrup as well.
I'm fully on board for any recipe that offers me decent baked beans. But Heinz style??? They're the very reason I haven't bought baked beans for a while. Though to be fair other brands don't impress me either. Going to try this, though, definitely. And thanks, of course.
Love beans on toast but never liked Heinz. Crosse & Blackwell were the beans for me. Will give this a try. I see with your recipe Rik I will be able to control the firmness of the beans. That's why I liked Crosse & Blackwell, the beans were not squishy and too soft. Many Thanks.
I must make these baked beans Rik, they look delicious! I have corned beef rissoles from your recipe chilling in the fridge for tonight’s dinner. Will let you know the results 😊🙏
Hello I found you through your pork pie recipe. I've wanted to make it for years. My Grandparents were from England and my mother bought pork pies here in Canada years ago. But i haven't seen them in a long time. So i wanted to make homemade one. Thank you for the amazing recipes. 🥮🍠🍲
Lovely looking beans Rik😋 got to be one of the all time great British meals beans on toast. I used to love making bean toasties using a toastie machine (very messy) you could hardly fill them up cause they'd leak all over out of the machine but bloody fantastic😋
Is tomatoe paste / puree the same thing? Have to day i prefer mine in a bowl with a braw brown bread toasted properly, lashings of butter and then dunk or spoon on the toast....its a comfort food, reminder of childhood after school and rainy days, always brings a smile....🏴⌚🏴⌚
Rik these are better than heinz beans, these days with tinned heinz beans there is more sauce than bean. I have been buying a better cheaper brand for a while now, but now i will be making my own. Thanks Rik, you nailed it again
I make my own beans also, I cook the beans then add onion, garlic, some molasses, tomato sauce and paste, bacon add some of the bean water and bake slowly in oven until they are the way you like them. Skip the processed ketchup.
For those who are interested Baked beans get their name because the raw haricot beans are baked in tomato sauce while inside the can. This recipe is awesome 👌
This is a great recipe and thanks for posting it. I have been thinking about making these for sometime. The price here is silly and keeps going up. I will be making these later this week. Thanks, Roger. You have been here for a while and seen it grow. Have a look at my bulk recipe mate, chop and change as usual. I agree the prices are crazy here! - 1900g navy beans or small white beans, soaked overnight, drained, and rinsed - 700g (or 700ml) ketchup (as a base for both sweetness and tomato flavor) - 400g tomato paste (to add depth and thicken the sauce) - 1/2 cup (120ml) water (adjust as needed) - 1/2 cup (120ml) spirit vinegar (adjust based on the vinegar content in your ketchup) - 1/2 cup (100g) sugar (adjust based on the sweetness of your ketchup) - 1/4 cup (60ml) cornstarch dissolved in 1/2 cup (120ml) water (for thickening) - 2 teaspoons salt (adjust to taste) - 1 teaspoon ground black pepper - 1/2 teaspoon ground clove - 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg - 1 teaspoon dried thyme or sage Thanks, mate. Best. Rik

So good! Thank you. Best, Rik
Love Heinz beans...never considered making my own till now.... thankyou for sharing Rik 😊
Thank you. Best, Rik
They look delicious. I love beans with a sausage and egg breakfast.
Me too! Thank you. Best, Rik
Thank you. Best, Rik
Sounds great! Thank you. Best, Rik
No nonsense cooking, love it and thanks for the recipe.
My pleasure 😊Best, Rik
He's like the Irish version of the Queen's Chef, and makes all the recipes for us poor subjects 🥲Subscribed!❤

Hi back yard chef. What a very good presentation ,all the information you could wish for. I’ve not done this recipe before but I’m going to try it out. Love watching your videos all those great old recipes of which I’m pleased you’re making them,so thanks ever so much 👍👍
Hope you enjoy. Thank you. Best, Rik
Will be making these!!!! My brothers used to cook me beans on toast with cheese grilled in the oven. It is sure to be better with this recipe. Thank you, Rik.
Hope you enjoy. Thank you. Best, Rik
What a lot of lively comments and discussion about beans. wow, Rik you really had us going with this recipe. thank you !! ❤❤❤
So nice of you. Thank you. Best, Rik
Thank you. Best, Rik
Sounds great! Thank you. Best, Rik
The musical fruit :) I eat some sort of bean almost daily. Home made is always the way to go. Thanks Rik.
You bet! Thank you. Best, Rik
Australia here. I love beans on toast, but never thought about making my own. Yours looked absolutely superb! However, I was disappointed with the small amount you put on 3 slices of toast. I would have put on at least double that amount! Now I'm drooling!
I would normally and a fried egg! Thank you. Best, Rik
What a great idea.I am going to try doing the first part in my electric pressure cooker..supposed to take 30 mins.I will let you know if it worked..Heinz are 2 ,50 Euro a tin now in Germany and there are not really any other makes to write home about. So thanks again Rik.:))
Sounds great! Thank you. Best, Rik
I haven't paid much attention to baked beans since I was a kid. In the US they're treated like a side dish and not a main meal. I had them for the first time last night as a main dish on a potato. Yum! The only thing better would be to make this delicious recipe! Gonna crack on today! Thank you, Rik.
Thank you. Best, Rik
I have to try and make these. The canned beans in the US have wayyy too much sugar. This way I can control the sugar. Great!!
Thank you. Best, Rik
baked beans makes its own music after eating :)
Thank you. Best, Rik
A good reason not to keep the cooking water ...
Thanks a lot....
Thank you. Best, Rik
Ooohhh lovely ...lovely ... Thank you. ...
Thank you. Best, Rik
Let the bread see the toaster ..🙂 Looks great though .
Ha ha ha. Thank you. Best, Rik
I had 2 slice of buttered toast (browned) and Heinz Beans while watching this. I have to admit your beans looked delicious 😋 but that toast looked more like warm bread! 😂
Brilliant, always wanted to find a good recipe for baked beans, thank you.
Thank you. Best, Rik
I just had beans on toast two nights ago. As someone stated on here, Heinz is my fav, but hard to find in the U.S. except specialty grocers. I can't wait to make these, as I can regulate the sugar to my taste. Brill, thanks Rik.
Thank you. Best, Rik
Thank you. Best, Rik
Thank you so much. I’m in Canada and they are so expensive. I have been looking for recipes to make my own in bulk but couldn’t find. Thank you. I love your channel. Missing my British food so much.
Thank you. Best, Rik
Baked beans mmmm.
3 times a week sounds healthy! I can add it to my breakfast.
TY Tik! Lovely recipe, looks great!!😊
Thank you. Best, Rik
I love beans, toast and eggs for breakfast. 😊
Thankyou Sir for the perfect recipe 😍 I made it today and my sons love it. ❤❤
Thank you for sharing, fantastic! Thank you. Best, Rik
In central Minnesota is a small rural town whose anual comunity summer evemt is known as Bear Hole Bean day
Beans prepared in large pots buried in a pit dug the ground that a wood fire has burned down to coals
-they bake for hours and setbed with bread and potato salafs and cole slaw
Wow! I would love to see that ( and try) Thank you. Best, Rik
The festival , is Bean Hole Beans day
Thank you. Best, Rik@@garyjohnson9297
My first time around here...I sub'd a few minutes in as your vibe felt warm. And by the end of the video so did those beans!
Thank you. Best, Rik
Amazing. Thanks Rik
My pleasure! Thank you. Best, Rik
Hi Stacey, Ketchup is for convenience and there is no ketchup on ketchup and who uses corn syrup, there is an ingredient list. Thank you. Best, Rik
This is heinz own reipe list says: Ingredients:
Beans (51%), Tomatoes (34%), Water, Sugar, Spirit Vinegar, Modified Cornflour, Salt, Spice Extracts, Herb Extract. So yes if cooked longer would make ketchup. Best, Rik@@staceyn2541
Man, what a recipe you have there. I'm gonna try it one of
these days.
Cheers mate and stay good.👍
Hope you enjoy. Thank you. Same to you. Best, Rik
Thank you. Best, Rik
I love baked beans. So versatile! You can add butter for a creamy sauce, or curry powder to add a bit of oomph. And why not gravy powder, an Oxo cube or spoonful of Bovril for extra umami? Thank you for this recipe, I'll try it this afternoon!
Thank you. Best, Rik
Love my baked beans, will be much better to make a panful of them, thankyou for sharing!enjoy watching your videos!❤
Hope you enjoy. Thank you. Best, Rik
made these last night much better than the tinned stuff thanks
Thank you. Best. Rik
Brit in Chile there was a store that had the big name ones , they shut down tho , just made these , excelent , thank you
Thanks for sharing. Thank you. Best, Rik
You can use the bean water when making bread. That is how I use up most of the bean water. It doesn’t affect the taste of the bread since it is not strongly flavored. I do the same with the water I boiled sweet corn in.
Thank you. Best, Rik
Rik,
I'm a Yorkshireman living in southern Italy and you cannot buy Heinz, HP etc style "baked" beans here for love nor money!
Thank you. Best, Rik
Thank you. Best, Rik
that's me in the mood for beans on toast now even tho it's just Branstons. 😀
Lovely! Thank you. Best, Rik
They look the business rik 👌 nice info in the description too, didn't know Wigan was that big for beans. Bet that sauce would go well with homemade ravioli 🙃
Yes it would. Thank you. Best, Rik
I'm paying crazy money for lite beans here and being diabetic i have had to stop sugar so i'm going to try this with Monk fruit sweetener , Thanks so much for this recipe.
Good luck, save money and adjust to your taste, go for it. You got this! Thank you. Best, Rik
Sounds great! I have mine frozen, just pull out and reheat slowly. Way better than the tinned stuff here. Thank you. Best, Rik
I found a can.of the British Heinz beans at Kroger here in american.midwest. i heated them up and ate them on toast. wow! It was really tasty! Eating them with the toast was a game changer!
Thank you. Best, Rik
Thank you. Best, Rik
US viewers. Your Boston style baked beans are exquisite. Please remember though, that this is a British style recipe, familiar to Commonwealth people.
Thank you. Best, Rik
Nice one Rik. I add a little liquid smoke to mine
Great idea! Thank you. Best, Rik
Thanks and welcome. Best, Rik
Most American beans have less sugar catsup , have mustard , some have salt pork , onion , and mollassas . those that are truly baked dont have corn starch as they thicken by the long cookimg in a crockery pot , and are thick , savory, and I prefer the savory beans over the sweet
Sounds delicious! Thank you. Best, Rik
This is what cooking's about. Not buying from a shop...doing it yourself!
Yes and you can alter the flavour to suit, that's the good thing! Thank you. Best, Rik
Rik, I would experiment with your recipe a little by adding some Worcestershire or Henderson’s sauce to the mix and to add a little bit more sweetness I would add about a tablespoon of black treacle or maple syrup as well.
Sounds great! Thank you. Best, Rik
🇨🇦 I will try making these but without the cloves and nutmeg. Not sure what other spices I could put in, if any, but I will try them.
Thank you. Best, Rik
I'm fully on board for any recipe that offers me decent baked beans.
But Heinz style??? They're the very reason I haven't bought baked beans for a while. Though to be fair other brands don't impress me either.
Going to try this, though, definitely. And thanks, of course.
Thank you. Best, Rik
Sounds great! Thank you. Best, Rik
I must make these baked beans Rik, they look delicious! I have corned beef rissoles from your recipe chilling in the fridge for tonight’s dinner. Will let you know the results 😊🙏
Thank you. Check in tonight for a corned beef twist. Best, Rik
Nice one Rik. Got my beans soaking now and will try the recipe tomorrow. Thank you sir. 😄😄👍👍
Thank you. Best, Rik
Personally I don't think the 'famous brand' is all that, not when you've made your own. Thanks Rik
Thank you. Best, Rik
Chef Rick! Just bumped into your channel and I love it! A good and well muppet-free zone! 😂👍
Thanks and welcome. Thank you. Best, Rik
Hello I found you through your pork pie recipe. I've wanted to make it for years. My Grandparents were from England and my mother bought pork pies here in Canada years ago. But i haven't seen them in a long time. So i wanted to make homemade one. Thank you for the amazing recipes. 🥮🍠🍲
Wonderful! Thank you. Best, Rik
Rik, I once tried to eat some baked beans through my nose.
In Heinz sight, it was a terrible idea!
Lovely looking beans Rik😋 got to be one of the all time great British meals beans on toast. I used to love making bean toasties using a toastie machine (very messy) you could hardly fill them up cause they'd leak all over out of the machine but bloody fantastic😋
Ha ha ha. Nice one, Dan. Thank you. Best, Rik
Ha ha ha - love it. Best, Rik@@mrdangiles90
😂😂😂
Is tomatoe paste / puree the same thing?
Have to day i prefer mine in a bowl with a braw brown bread toasted properly, lashings of butter and then dunk or spoon on the toast....its a comfort food, reminder of childhood after school and rainy days, always brings a smile....🏴⌚🏴⌚
Yea tomato sauce is the same as tomato puree
paste/puree same. Thank you. Best, Rik
As a canner i would follow your recipe cut cooking in pan time in half leave out the cornflour and then pressure can
Great tip! Thank you. Best, Rik
Rik these are better than heinz beans, these days with tinned heinz beans there is more sauce than bean.
I have been buying a better cheaper brand for a while now, but now i will be making my own.
Thanks Rik, you nailed it again
Thank you. Best, Rik
You can also can/jar them, will last on the shelf for a very long time.
Thank you. Best, Rik
Thank you❤
I like to do my beans in the pressure cooker. Looks good Rik, I'll have to try it on toast but it does seem odd to us in the US.
Thank you. Best, Rik
Great recipe Rik 👍👍👍 branded beans are so expensive now , £1-40 plus now for a can
Thank you. Best, Rik
They look so good, I'm drooling here Rik.
Thank you. Best, Rik
I make my own beans also, I cook the beans then add onion, garlic, some molasses, tomato sauce and paste, bacon add some of the bean water and bake slowly in oven until they are the way you like them. Skip the processed ketchup.
Sounds delicious! Thank you. Best, Rik
For those who are interested Baked beans get their name because the raw haricot beans are baked in tomato sauce while inside the can. This recipe is awesome 👌
Thank you. Best, Rik
This is a great recipe and thanks for posting it. I have been thinking about making these for sometime. The price here is silly and keeps going up. I will be making these later this week. I made the cockles recipe last night. Today I am looking into to canning them. I have never done this before.
Your racing now. Your silver plaque is within reach and no one deserves it more than you.
Thanks, Roger. You have been here for a while and seen it grow.
Have a look at my bulk recipe mate, chop and change as usual. I agree the prices are crazy here!
- 1900g navy beans or small white beans, soaked overnight, drained, and rinsed
- 700g (or 700ml) ketchup (as a base for both sweetness and tomato flavor)
- 400g tomato paste (to add depth and thicken the sauce)
- 1/2 cup (120ml) water (adjust as needed)
- 1/2 cup (120ml) spirit vinegar (adjust based on the vinegar content in your ketchup)
- 1/2 cup (100g) sugar (adjust based on the sweetness of your ketchup)
- 1/4 cup (60ml) cornstarch dissolved in 1/2 cup (120ml) water (for thickening)
- 2 teaspoons salt (adjust to taste)
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon ground clove
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme or sage
Thanks, mate. Best. Rik
That great thanks. I will try this. Please put me down for a signed copy of your book when it's ready.
Disclosure. I'm no fan of baked beans. About twice a year I'll be suddenly drawn to having beans on toast with lashings of butter on the toast. So I guess this one probably isn't for me, but it really was fascinating to see how making them yourself comes together. The end result looks just amazing! Maybe I'd like these better?
Thank you. Best, Rik
