    I'm also missing baked beans (amongst other things) living in Italy. Made me laugh when I saw them for the first in the supermarket in the ethnic food section! But they're 2 euros a can so I'm going to try and make my own. Thanks.

    I always make these in my slow cooker. I had three containers in the fridge last time and one of them was in the back of the fridge which is very cold for well over two weeks and I ate them and they were lovely. Once Frozen they are even better when thawed and heated. I can't thank you enough for a good baked bean recipe that is tomato sauce based. I have always made New England baked beans and yours is the first recipe I tried for tomato sauce baked beans and fell in love! This is my go-to being recipe.

    This seems to be the definitive video on Heinz style British beans in tomato sauce.. Heinz cans are really expensive here in Thailand so will try and make a big batch and freeze them. Very useful as a base for all kinds of things, from chili to tomato soup with the beans giving the soup a lot more body and substance. Or fry it up with onions, any kind of meat, a lot of chili peppers, hot paprika and cumin powder and it turns into an excellent Mexican breakfast, fried egg on top.
    WIll be a big quantity.. 1 kg of dried beans (will at least double in weight), a wholesale size can of tomato from Makro, bell peppers (because why not) and onions. I should have a whole lot of the stuff very soon. :)

    • @Steve-Owens
      @Steve-Owens  4 года назад

      You should have indeed. No need to freeze them though. In sterilized jars these will store for years. And for the first months, even improve with age..
      Thanks

    I made a double recipe and kept some in the fridge and froze some and they were absolutely delicious!! This is About as close to Heinz as you're ever going to get without purchasing Heinz baked beans. I ate them all and finished them the end of last week. I finished them up on toast and being a vegan beans are very important to me. I am soaking my beans right now to make a second double batch. The only thing I did not double were the tinned tomatoes but these beans are absolutely gorgeous! I ate them in jacket potatoes and on toast and in veggie and grain bowls and simply alone. Way to go with this recipe!! Good, memory inducing and cheap as chips. :-) :-) I also used Just a Touch less smoked paprika.

    I have now made five double batches of these beans! Yes I am vegan but I make them because I love them! Being from New England I grew up eating beans at least twice a week. You can put them on anything or over anything or just in a bowl with some toppings. I'm going to make another double batch tomorrow that I need to soak my beans tonight. So, I am using pinto beans because I have a 12 pound bag and I thought I had Great Northern beans and both bags I must have used so we're going to make Hines pinto beans! :-) still a double batch.

    I make baked beans often and freeze them for eating later. But mine are actually baked in a Dutch oven and have molasses in them rather than sugar. I like the darker colour and the deeper flavour that molasses gives them. I also don't add vegetables to the beans. For instance, I take an onion whole and set it into the middle of the beans, giving them flavour and yet being able to remove the onion when the beans are done. My hubby loves the onion after it's cooked this way. Just a few things that I do with my baked beans. :)

      I decided to give your recipe an exact go. It was great! I did put some Brooks ketchup in it and pickled green tobasco juice for the third bite. I did tweak the soaking to the putting my bowl of navies on top of the water heater. It seemed to help the cook time a bit. Next go around, I will put all the ingredients plus 3/4 cup water over night and make adjustments on the stove. This might speed up the beans taking on flavor, I will keep you and the channel posted.
      Take care from Oklahoma,
      Mike and Vee (she read the last posting her, classic reaction!)

    Any suggestions on how to recreate the Heinz BBQ sauce baked beans? They’ve changed the tin sizes and now the BBQ sauce is only available in the enormous tins in Australia. I don’t always want them multiple days in a row so thought if I could get pretty close to the flavour I love I could make a big batch and pressure can them in small jars so they’re shelf stable. I tried a BBQ baked beans recipe I found online and discovered that American baked beans are very different, and I’ve found a few recipes for Heinz style in tomato sauce, but can’t find anything for the BBQ.

    • @kardainzr161
      @kardainzr161 2 года назад

      Add some BBQ sauce and you should get a close taste, I always preferred the Ham flavoured beans personally,, but just a squeeze of bbq whilst cooking should give you what you want.

      @@kardainzr161 oh that’s an interesting thought. Tomato sauce with a squirt of BBQ. Hmmm. Yeah maybe that would do it. It is a very subtle BBQyness. Funny it never occurred to me to try that as I do a squirt of BBQ sauce in my bolognaise sauce!
      The ham sauce is my second favourite, and I will want to make a batch of them now and then too. Apparently that’s as simple as just doing the tomato sauce recipe and throwing a ham hock in as it simmers.
      I’ve been putting off trying this. I have heaps of dry beans and bought tinned tomatoes and then didn’t do it. Just last week I realised why. I have an aversion to tinned tomatoes. I don’t know what it is, but I can taste something in them that I really don’t like. Last week I made osso buco and used tinned tomatoes as per the recipe and didn’t enjoy it at all. Then a few days later I made moussaka and instead of using the tinned tomatoes I used passata and it was great. No tinned taste. So I think I’ll donate the rest of those tins to a food pantry and use all passata in my beans 😊 You’ve inspired me again. Thanks!

      @@Margherite2freezer space is far too precious in my house to be wasted on an item that should be shelf stable. I only shop every 6-8 weeks so it’s very tight. I also doubt I’d ever get around to using them from the freezer. Beans are something that I grab if I can’t think what to make or am too tired to cook. They’re a last minute that’ll do. If I have to plan ahead and defrost them, I won’t eat them.

I have some roses jam jars with metal lids, if these are sterile and hot when adding the hot baked beans, will the lid seal itself or do I need to put them in the oven or a pot with water in?

    I saw in one of the comments below that these beans will keep for 1-2 years. If you do want to keep it a long time is cooling them and then putting them into sterilized bottles enough, or do you need to boil the bottled beans in their bottles for 10-15 minutes.

    Hey @Steve, a couple of questions for you but first, I hope you are residing in a safe country? and pref keeping yourself as safe as possible, isolating yourself? Regarding the beans, a couple of questions; whats your opinion on salting the soaking water, I notice you didn't and my mum doesn't but America's test kitchen people suggest salting the water not only salts and flavours the beans but strengthens the skins so they don't burst while cooking whereas my mum says salting toughens the beans which you don't want, whats your opinion on the matter? Also, if I am wanting to add bacon or chorizo sausage, cooked into the bean mix, could I still bottle them in the same way? Lastly, they look like the perfect size jars for me, what size would they be in mil or grams?

    • @Steve-Owens
      @Steve-Owens  4 года назад +3

      Salting would toughen the skins but do you want that? Maybe with smaller beans but the tougher the skins the harder for them to absorb flavour, so the choice is your's, I think the Jars were about a pint but I can't be sure as I am in Istanbul.. ;o)

    • @MaZEEZaM
      @MaZEEZaM 4 года назад

      @@Steve-Owens Yeah, I want them to soak as much flavour in as possible, no salting then. ok, I think a pint is about 600mls? either way, close enough. I really don't know whether Istanbul has many virus numbers or not, hopefully that means very few. Hope you are staying safe :) Best regards :)
