  • COOK COUNTY, Ill. - Empty storefronts are a major issue in neighborhoods throughout Cook County. And it is not only bad for business.
“We see it as a detriment to our health, right?” said Felicia Slaton-Young, of the Greater Englewood Chamber of Commerce. “Because these vacant spaces mean there are services that are not available, readily here in the community.”
How to fill those empty spaces is a long-standing challenge in Englewood and communities countywide.
There may be no perfect solution but Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi quietly introduced a policy he believes can help.
“This office used to incentivize and reward vacancy,” Kaegi said. “If you kept a property empty, you could get a reduction in your assessment of up to 90 percent.”

This just goes to show how clueless they are. The amount of tax they are imposing on these properties never make them sustainable.
