    Saw this video yesterday. Today, stopped by grocery and saw boneless skinless chicken breast on sale for 3.99 per lb. Bought two packs to try out. On my way out, decided to go to the pet aisle. Chicken Dog Jerky for dogs was $17.79 for a 1 lb bag. This makes so much sense! Tomorrow we will be doing chicken jerky for my Dobe, Jessie and my Golden Doodle, both rescues. Tks for the idea.

    I hope you will get a commission of some sort because I just bought through your link the meat slicer! My chef pro served me well for a few years but when a plastic fitting, crucial to its performance, broke, NO ONE could offer that one and only part!! And Chef pro won’t answer emails or phone calls! Thanks for a great demonstration of making jerky for my dogs and cats!!

      Not really sure because we only feed them chicken jerky treats. But if you search online, I'm sure they have plenty of dog biscuit recipes.

    We have been doing this for years, I recommend you slice the chicken frozen in thin strips. Wait for very cold day to this, put your oven on low and let them dehydrate.

    Agree with you 100% Pete!Preservatives are what makes us sick and our pets! The worst thing you can feed your dog is treats and kibbles and canned dog food
    Our little Boston terrier mix is on a raw food diet and I make her treats out of bananas and peanut butter and oats. I want to try making your jerky now! I don’t have a dehydrator but I ll try it in the oven 🐕 thanks!

    2 questions 1. My Dehydrator only goes up to 160 is that acceptable? Can you choose on the electric meat slicer the amount to cut like can I choose quarter inch or am I eyeballing it

    I have a Parmchi puppy with a heart murmur. I want a healthy snack and a teething option. How do you store them? Do you have to keep them in the refrigerator. Thank you

    • @petebeasttexashomesteading

      We keep the jerky in a paper bag so it can breath at room temperature. We've stored them that way for up to three months with no problems. Also best to feed your dog real meat and a little veggies like peas, sweet potato or beans.

    Very good idea Pete. Your dogs are beautiful. We have Molly the Old English Sheepdog and we buy her those bags of chicken breast jerky at Costco for $20, but its only a small bag plus we're up in Ontario, Canada. I raised a bunch of Rhode Island Red meat birds which actually weren't very tender for us, but my wife make some Chicken Adobo or or other chicken meal for Molly and she loves it. That way we control all the junk that's in store bought food. I'd like to do this but first I need that amazing slicer and that amazing dehydrator. Good quick video bud. Cheers, Chad.

    Pete - Thank you - I don't have a dehydrator but I do have a freeze dryer - just wondering if I can get similar results by doing about a half chicken cycle in the freeze dryer?

    • @petebeasttexashomesteading
      @petebeasttexashomesteading  2 года назад

      The results would be different. They would come out dry, crumbly and raw looking. You could try putting in the oven at the lowest setting under 200F and see how that comes out.

    you seem to have this process dialed in, and I somehow feel that your dog would not trade places with any other pet out there. :) The questions I have are if the chicken will still slice in your slicer if it is not near frozen and what brand slicer and dehydrator those are that you have? I do mine differently in that per cup of water, I put in a table spoon of soy sauce, and two teaspoons of fish sauce- and marinate the chicken strips for two to four hours. I think the added umami flavor and slight salt content increase works well, but my dog makes then vanish so fast it's hard to believe he has time to taste. Edit: ooops ... just saw the links - thanks.

      @@WayWordWay I would never use salt for your pets. We did that and our dogs started suffering with crippling joint pain. We stopped the salt and the pain went away. Remember that they don't sweat like we do and have a tuff time getting rid of extra salt in their body.

    • @WayWordWay
      @WayWordWay Месяц назад

      @@petebeasttexashomesteading Keep in mind that dogs should not have excessive salt levels in their diets. They need salt just like every other animal and recommended levels are approximately 28 mg per pound of body weight. That works out to about 0.08 percent - and of course standard IV fluids used by vets are .9 percent. mine comes in just under that - and it can be argued that it makes the chicken safer in as much as salt acts against bacteria, even in such small amounts. Good quality pet foods of course all have salt added, though it often is labeled with strange names because people can over react due to lack of knowledge.

    • @WayWordWay
      @WayWordWay Месяц назад +1

      A small update. You did me a great fovor in mentioning the salt. I just came back from the grocery store and checked all the 3 brands of chicken and found to my surprise that every one of them has followed the lead of butterball and now injects their products with a 2$ sodium solution by weight. What on earth - is nothing now unadulterated? So now I'm making a batch the way you suggested. Then I read the labels on the expensive dog food brands and the treats. It's mind blowing the chemicals and non dog friendly ingredients in those. Pandora's box has opened for me.

    Was wondering why you dont have meat birds for jerky…though that must be a pretty difficult process.
    Also, when your hens stop laying eggs (or lets say you want to get rid of unwanted roosters etc), do you just let them out of the chicken run and let the hawks and raccoons have ‘em?

      That would be great having meat birds for that process, but yeah it would be a lot of extra work right now. When our chickens get too old, we'll probably cull them for our dogs.
