I’ve always been very curious about Dolohov’s purple flame curse that he uses on Hermione in the department of mysteries. I believe I read (or maybe I’m just assuming) that it was a spell of his own invention and that, if he had been verbal at the time of casting it, likely well could have killed Hermione. We don’t get to hear much about Dolohov when he’s beside the likes of Voldemort and Bellatrix, but if he’s inventing his own fatal dark magic curses? That’s some TOP TIER dark arts that we get desensitized to because we’re constantly interacting/talking about the most powerful dark lord in history. I’d like to hear more about Dolohov’s character in general, but specifically the story on how and why he came up with his curse and the trials it took to come up with it
Yeahh, I remember it so well! That purple flame spell had a special kind of hand movement while using it. Dolohov also tried to use it on Sirius. And Harry was certain that if he had not used the protection charm for Hermione, that spell could've been proven to be fatal. Still, Hermione spent quite some in the hospital wing after that, so that spell is probably very strong and dangerous...
It does have a name, although I cannot spell it and yes you are correct, it would have either killed her or fatally wounded her, I believe it was said it was a purple flame that resembles a whip strike or a sword slash

The wand movements were probably also similar, as Harry described sectumsempra as wielding an invisible sword on Malfoy. Snape teaching dolohov is very likely as before Voldemort's first downfall to Harry, they probably spent time together as they were both full on death eaters at the time (I mean Snape hadn't switched allegiances yet), and as lupin said, sectumsempra was always a go-to for Snape, so even if he didn't tell them at first, the other death eaters probably would have seen him using it in duels and gotten curious and asked him about it. That's my theory
@@caveboy5677 that's actually a really good theory, the only problem I have with that is the personality difference, although we not know much about Snape personality wise back before he switched allies, if he was like how is was after he switched then I imagine Snape as a close third man, because Mr Malfoy was his second, Snape would still be babysitting the crazied and sadistic death eaters lowkey, and we all know how Snape is with teaching. Yet, Snape grabbed the Marauder's Map from Harry, turned to Lupin, and passive-aggressively referred to dark magic as, "your [Lupin] area of expertise." Snape had wanted to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts for years, so that line had some animosity behind it.
I think Snape wasn't made the DADA teacher because Dumbledore cared enough for him to not tempt the curse killing or harming Snape. Might also have been because of his great acumen in potions and alchemy?

I do remember seeing an interesting theory that the 3 peverell brothers were the ones who created the unforgivable curses. The idea went that it was the brothers who actually created the 3 hallows with the whole death story just being a fanciful tale, and the 3 curses were inventions that came along with them. The brother with the wand created the cruciatus curse to further assert his dominance over others. The brother who made the resurrection stone created the killing curse by playing around and researching the subject of death. And the brother who made the invisibility cloak made the imperious curse so he could hide better and made people who found him stay silent and hide his tracks Nothing confirmed ofcourse but an interesting idea non the less
That theory makes a lot more sense if you think about this: Ignotus, Antioch and Cadmus Peverell are most likely eponymous to the curses. Antioch who was the original wielder of the Elder Wand, in the perfect mastery of the art created a curse so perfect and "pure" in the sense of a residue-free kill without leaving the victim in pain or any sort of suffering, ending its life on the spot - the incantation even starts with "A" - Avada Kedavra. For the sheer superiority over others and because his powers with the elder wand were unmatched, he thought he'd never had to fear anyone with such a deadly weapon. That perfectly plays into the additional circumstance that many say those curses generally might have a "lesser" to no impact when you don't really *mean* it but thats a whole different discussion but since Antioch is so unconditionally "mighty" with the wand he basically lacks any necessity of a justifying emotion (like cruciatus is more potent when you actually despise your victim). Cadmus did indeed experiment with life and death. But and I guess that is important: he was doomed to succumb to the inevitable and excruciating suffering, which may have led him to the creation of a curse so inherently cruel, that people feel the torture he himself felt when he realized, that the one thing he desired the most was impossible to ever enjoy again. The Cruciatus curse exerts excruciating pain without causing any sign of violence applied to the recipient - which fits the idea the pain he himself felt was caused by the psychological deterioration and torture - and can drive its victim to insanity, which was Cadmus' fate as well as he ended his life eventually. I always assumed what made a type of magic Dark, was the feelings one needed to have in order to cast it. Crucio = you need to want to hurt them and like it. Avadakadsvra = you have to want to see them dead. And I assume Imperius needs the caster to want to control someone. Whenever Harry tried using these unforgivable curses they only half worked because he didn’t truly embrace/relish those feelings. In his heart. Expectopatronum needs you to see your happiest memory. Etc etc. Is that not how all spells work? You have to WANT, desire, and FEEL the spell you want to cast. And if you don’t they either won’t work or won’t work the intended way? Therefore I always assumed what made a spell Dark was the requirement emotions needed to cast it. If that emotion is anger, rage, murder, pain/torture, control, or fear the spell is dark. If the spells required emotions were love, protection, defense, healing, innocent/benign curiosity… the spell wasn’t dark.
When Harry used the cruciatus curse on Amycus Carrow it worked pretty well. I never understood why Harry's desire to torture Amycus after he spat at McGonagall was stronger than the desire to torture Bellatrix after she killed Sirius.

Some and only some spells required a strong feeling. You didn't hear Flitwick teaching the kids they had to feel like flying to levitate and you didn't need feelings to use the Imperius, Harry just used it without really thinking about anything except what he wanted the goblin to do, same for Travers the wizard that met up with them. Harry certainly didn't intend to kill Malfoy when he hit him with Sectum Sempra.
@@MountainFisher well think about it. It depends on the spell. Obviously if you want to lift something you have to have a desire for that object to be lifted. Wingguardium etc. I don’t think you have to have strong feelings to do every spell, but you have to have some kind of feeling or you wouldn’t do the spell at all. So simple spells probably just require the desire to do the spell. But the stronger (and possibly the darker) the spell, you have to have that feeling to cast it. And the stronger the spell, the stronger the feeling.

I wouldn't say Voldemort was mundane when it comes to the dark arts. An old saying goes good artists create, but great artists steal. He may have not creating alot of new things, like the wizard who created dementors, or horcruxez. But he was a master who took what came before him and knew how to implement it to the fullest potential. In that sense, he was the greatest master of dark magic history had ever seen up until that point.
You should do a video talking about how Tom Riddle was pretty rudimentary in his magic, people think he was all that but him being basic would make an interesting video. How the big bad was in the magic sense “ just really good at math” but bc of his lack of love he never experimented to make anything lost lasting. Tom would never had that thing that makes you human………….. Idk what I mean but one line in there caught my attention, something about being basic and the drink of despair
One popular form of dark arts come in the form of the inferi. Zombie like creatures, made by killing people it seems. Transfiguration wizards basically become necromancers, making inferi to summon on command. We only saw the inferi in the movie very little, and the only time they mattered they were left to guard the horcrux, so they were just left there.
It’s interesting to learn the history of the Dark Arts, or at least the records that are still around. As a topic, it is equally fascinating, and yet also terrifying.

Its nice to see someone use there brain about dark magic. Nothing is black and white. In my opinion dark magic is the same as guns. They themselves are not evil. Its how they are used. Its all about intent.

100 BCE? I thought dark magic goes way back then this. As for the unforgivable curses, it seems to me that the Impirius is possible to forgive, the curse doesn't seem that evil. I mean sure, it's not a positive thing to control someone, but it good be beneficial in combat when fighting DE and dark creatures. Which brings me to agree with you, not only dark magic practitioners use dark magic, good guys can use it too.
A lot of spells are technically classified as "dark" magic. Flipendo, for example, which is a simple jinx that pushes the target back, is a dark jinx. As is Oppugno, which Hermione used to send those birds at Ron in the 4th film. Dark is not inherently evil, and Light is not inherently good.

Why then could the KC not be used to grant mercy to a terminal patient? Or the Imperius to prevent someone from harming themselves or others? The new HP game seems to include some darker spells if the trailer is to be believed, and I'm curious to see how that pans out.

Yeah I dunno if Voldemort’s use of dark magic can be considered mundane, he was an expert in everything and maybe there wasn’t a whole lot of shock and awe like creating dementors, but he was pretty creative with how he used it
Once I get to the quest line in Hogwarts Legacy I am for sure learning all of the Unforgivable Curses! I’m not a dark wizard though. In my mind using Avada Kedavra is just a way to kill an enemy quickly without prolonging their suffering. Cruciatus on the other hand… I’m not sure my conscience would let me use that one. It just seems cruel.
2:08 What about spells that can be used to kill? If I Incendio you and set you on fire to kill you, is that Dark Magic? Although Incendio can also be used to light torches. Like if I Levioso you into the air and them smash you down to the ground with Descendo to breaking all your bones, is that Dark magic? I can freeze you to death with Glacius, Cut off your head with Defindo, Blow you apart with Bambarda, Crush you into a wall with Depulso, etc. There are a ton of spells that when used can kill.

I've always wanted to know the details behind why the unforgivable curses were given the title of unforgivable. We all know what they do and how that influences this. But I want to know what with or wizard gave them this label. Was there a witch or wizard who was using one of them to the point where the ministery didn't have a choice but to send them to azkaban and label the curse as unforgivable? These weird details would make a great video
I would guess, at the time that these curses were invented/discovered, it was during a superstitious and bewildered age when civil law and government policy were yet to be established. As these structures would grow to influence many witches and wizards of a previous age, so would restrictions on certain practices of magic that would inevitably result in retaliation by dark witches and wizards. Violence would break out and both sides would be justified to use these curses in whatever way they see fit; at least until one side loses.
@lowyind pullen I think you're answering your own questions there! And it's not always common sense because not every human being thinks on the same level as others. People are raised in a variety of environments with different conditions, each molding the individual's thinking in a unique way. What one person considers barbaric and disdainful can be just an average Tuesday to somebody else. As forbidden as the Unforgivable Curses are, what they are capable of can still be enticing to a single wizard who is ambitious or cruel enough to want to use them.

but Avadakadsvra can not be blocked with a spell, and another spell that kills people can in fact be blocked with a defense charm. You need to be realy prepared and talented to dodge or apperate away from a killing curse.
Dementors were created by a darkwizard who lived in a tower which would later become askaban, they were made wardens there and allowed to feed on prisoners because they couldn’t be destroyed so they had to do something with them
I heard a theory from SuperCarlinBrothers that the unforgivable curses were actually created by the Peverall brothers. Avada Kedavra was a spell that could instantly win any duel, so obviously it goes in line with the Elder Wand. Crucio gives you such unbearable pain that you want to kill yourself, thus fitting perfectly with the resurrection stone, and the Imperius curse is a bit weirder, but the theory goes that Ignotus used it to keep himself hidden, and gently steer people away from himself (which also explains why the Imperius curse is the only one that doesn't actually harm the person on the other end)
A lot of these spells are right to be considered dark magic. The killing and torture curse are both self explanatory as to why they are considered dark. The creation of horcruxes requires the use of the killing curse as part of the process and corrupts one's soul. The imperius curse takes away someone's ability to control their actions.
I’d have to say Defense Against the Dark Arts is probably my favorite subject next to Potions. Transfiguration seemed cool too but I just always liked the Dark Arts more. I’m a proud Ravenclaw so dark magic wouldn’t dare come from my wand.

Descendo is the darkest spell of all. You leave your enemies helpless and dying in a crumpled heap of broken bone and torn flesh. Avada is basically a mercy in comparison.

how can the Ministery of magic, know if a witch or wizard used any of the 3 unforgivable curses? do they put a traceable spell on the 3 curses, so they can find who used them and the location?
The naming of the three as the "Unforgivable Curses" was simply a political decision made by the British Ministry of Magic. Nothing more complicated than that. They don't seem to be illegal in the area taught by Durmstrang as they are taught at the school but it doesn't seem clear about their status in other regions.
"The desire to be cruel". I struggle with this. People seem to be under the consensus that dementors are evil. I don't agree. They are beeing that feed on souls. Souls are a resource to them. Like food. Is it really evil to be hungry???

I was today years old when I found out about the Entrail Expelling Curse... What the fuck is even that? Could you imagine Voldemort using this instead of the Killing Curse?
Dementors aren't "natural" magical creatures, they were created by the dark wizard that built Azkaban 5 or 6 hundred years ago. he built Azkaban as his own dark fortress and after he died the obscuration spell put on the building was lifted and the fortress was discovered. when the magical authorities inspected the building the Dementors shocked them, they had never seen anything like them before. they were forced to leave the fortress standing because they had no idea how to capture or kill a Dementor. Azkaban was the Dementors home, it always has been. a short time later it was turned into a magical prison for the worst of the worst and the rest is history.
Yeah dark magic has always been seen as evil due to evil people using it for evil reasons, but not all dark magic is bad and mostly would be more considered black magic which is just another version of white magic or good magic as the wizard world would put it
What about being able to blast fire from the wand or lightning I mean that looks like that's real Combat magic that's you know the school of Destruction

I think it's poor writing to place Dark Magic's history beginning around 100 B.C. That's during the period of the Roman Republic becoming the Roman Empire. It would be far more interesting to hear about dark wizards in the ancient empire of Persia or Babylon. Or, how about the idea that civilization began by wizards, and the jealous muggles took it over. 100 B.C. just feels like poor writing is all.
This is an amazing and very constructive video where you analyse the dark arts a little deeply. I say little because there are still tons of things that can't be obviously covered in a 10 minute video. There was sectumsempra curse by snape. That is dark curse here are some more: Dolohov's purple spell Protego diabolica Fiendfyre Morse Morde (sorry if the spelling is wrong) Expulso (dark twin of confringo) I absolutely love dark magic dude. If HP world was real, I would immediately join Voldemort. I would be so good at it even he and all his followers will learn from me.

Whenever Harry tried using these unforgivable curses they only half worked because he didn’t truly embrace/relish those feelings. In his heart. Expectopatronum needs you to see your happiest memory. Etc etc. Is that not how all spells work? You have to WANT, desire, and FEEL the spell you want to cast. And if you don’t they either won’t work or won’t work the intended way?
Therefore I always assumed what made a spell Dark was the requirement emotions needed to cast it. If that emotion is anger, rage, murder, pain/torture, control, or fear the spell is dark. If the spells required emotions were love, protection, defense, healing, innocent/benign curiosity… the spell wasn’t dark.
When Harry used the cruciatus curse on Amycus Carrow it worked pretty well. I never understood why Harry's desire to torture Amycus after he spat at McGonagall was stronger than the desire to torture Bellatrix after she killed Sirius.

Some and only some spells required a strong feeling. You didn't hear Flitwick teaching the kids they had to feel like flying to levitate and you didn't need feelings to use the Imperius, Harry just used it without really thinking about anything except what he wanted the goblin to do, same for Travers the wizard that met up with them. Harry certainly didn't intend to kill Malfoy when he hit him with Sectum Sempra.
@@MountainFisher well think about it. It depends on the spell. Obviously if you want to lift something you have to have a desire for that object to be lifted. Wingguardium etc. I don’t think you have to have strong feelings to do every spell, but you have to have some kind of feeling or you wouldn’t do the spell at all. So simple spells probably just require the desire to do the spell. But the stronger (and possibly the darker) the spell, you have to have that feeling to cast it. And the stronger the spell, the stronger the feeling.

I wouldn't say Voldemort was mundane when it comes to the dark arts. An old saying goes good artists create, but great artists steal. He may have not creating alot of new things, like the wizard who created dementors, or horcruxez. But he was a master who took what came before him and knew how to implement it to the fullest potential. In that sense, he was the greatest master of dark magic history had ever seen up until that point.

One popular form of dark arts come in the form of the inferi. Zombie like creatures, made by killing people it seems. Transfiguration wizards basically become necromancers, making inferi to summon on command. We only saw the inferi in the movie very little, and the only time they mattered they were left to guard the horcrux, so they were just left there.
It’s interesting to learn the history of the Dark Arts, or at least the records that are still around. As a topic, it is equally fascinating, and yet also terrifying.

100 BCE? I thought dark magic goes way back then this. As for the unforgivable curses, it seems to me that the Impirius is possible to forgive, the curse doesn't seem that evil. I mean sure, it's not a positive thing to control someone, but it good be beneficial in combat when fighting DE and dark creatures. Which brings me to agree with you, not only dark magic practitioners use dark magic, good guys can use it too.
A lot of spells are technically classified as "dark" magic. Flipendo, for example, which is a simple jinx that pushes the target back, is a dark jinx. As is Oppugno, which Hermione used to send those birds at Ron in the 4th film. Dark is not inherently evil, and Light is not inherently good.

@@eranshachar9954 I always thought the Killing Curse being outlawed in such a way was incredibly naive. You could kill someone with plenty of spells, including a simple levitation charm. Why then could the KC not be used to grant mercy to a terminal patient? Or the Imperius to prevent someone from harming themselves or others? The new HP game seems to include some darker spells if the trailer is to be believed, and I'm curious to see how that pans out.

Yeah I dunno if Voldemort’s use of dark magic can be considered mundane, he was an expert in everything and maybe there wasn’t a whole lot of shock and awe like creating dementors, but he was pretty creative with how he used it

Once I get to the quest line in Hogwarts Legacy I am for sure learning all of the Unforgivable Curses! I’m not a dark wizard though. In my mind using Avada Kedavra is just a way to kill an enemy quickly without prolonging their suffering. Cruciatus on the other hand… I’m not sure my conscience would let me use that one. It just seems cruel.

Indeed, there are ways to use magic, intent. One can crucio someone bad for information, kill in self defense, it's all about what one uses a thing for.

I've always wanted to know the details behind why the unforgivable curses were given the title of unforgivable.
We all know what they do and how that influences this. But I want to know what with or wizard gave them this label. Was there a witch or wizard who was using one of them to the point where the ministery didn't have a choice but to send them to azkaban and label the curse as unforgivable?

I would guess, at the time that these curses were invented/discovered, it was during a superstitious and bewildered age when civil law and government policy were yet to be established. As these structures would grow to influence many witches and wizards of a previous age, so would restrictions on certain practices of magic that would inevitably result in retaliation by dark witches and wizards. Violence would break out and both sides would be justified to use these curses in whatever way they see fit; at least until one side loses.
@lowyind pullen I think you're answering your own questions there! And it's not always common sense because not every human being thinks on the same level as others. People are raised in a variety of environments with different conditions, each molding the individual's thinking in a unique way. What one person considers barbaric and disdainful can be just an average Tuesday to somebody else.
As forbidden as the Unforgivable Curses are, what they are capable of can still be enticing to a single wizard who is ambitious or cruel enough to want to use them.

Avadakadsvra is kind a bummer for me, you can just explode someone with another more simple spell
but Avadakadsvra can not be blocked with a spell, and another spell that kills people can in fact be blocked with a defense charm. You need to be realy prepared and talented to dodge or apperate away from a killing curse.

Dementors were created by a darkwizard who lived in a tower which would later become askaban, they were made wardens there and allowed to feed on prisoners because they couldn’t be destroyed so they had to do something with them

I heard a theory from SuperCarlinBrothers that the unforgivable curses were actually created by the Peverall brothers. Avada Kedavra was a spell that could instantly win any duel, so obviously it goes in line with the Elder Wand. Crucio gives you such unbearable pain that you want to kill yourself, thus fitting perfectly with the resurrection stone, and the Imperius curse is a bit weirder, but the theory goes that Ignotus used it to keep himself hidden, and gently steer people away from himself (which also explains why the Imperius curse is the only one that doesn't actually harm the person on the other end)

A lot of these spells are right to be considered dark magic. The killing and torture curse are both self explanatory as to why they are considered dark. The creation of horcruxes requires the use of the killing curse as part of the process and corrupts one's soul. The imperius curse takes away someone's ability to control their actions.
I’d have to say Defense Against the Dark Arts is probably my favorite subject next to Potions. Transfiguration seemed cool too but I just always liked the Dark Arts more. I’m a proud Ravenclaw so dark magic wouldn’t dare come from my wand.

The naming of the three as the "Unforgivable Curses" was simply a political decision made by the British Ministry of Magic. Nothing more complicated than that. They don't seem to be illegal in the area taught by Durmstrang as they are taught at the school but it doesn't seem clear about their status in other regions.

Yes. At the end of book 7, Harry has 3 wands all loyal to him: the elder wand, Draco's wand and his phoenix wand.

Dementors aren't "natural" magical creatures, they were created by the dark wizard that built Azkaban 5 or 6 hundred years ago. he built Azkaban as his own dark fortress and after he died the obscuration spell put on the building was lifted and the fortress was discovered. when the magical authorities inspected the building the Dementors shocked them, they had never seen anything like them before. they were forced to leave the fortress standing because they had no idea how to capture or kill a Dementor. Azkaban was the Dementors home, it always has been. a short time later it was turned into a magical prison for the worst of the worst and the rest is history.
Yeah dark magic has always been seen as evil due to evil people using it for evil reasons, but not all dark magic is bad and mostly would be more considered black magic which is just another version of white magic or good magic as the wizard world would put it

I think it's poor writing to place Dark Magic's history beginning around 100 B.C. That's during the period of the Roman Republic becoming the Roman Empire. It would be far more interesting to hear about dark wizards in the ancient empire of Persia or Babylon. Or, how about the idea that civilization began by wizards, and the jealous muggles took it over.
