- In this video I begin a brand new series in which I make an attempt at one of Minecraft's oldest and most popular challenges. Dating back to February of 2011, the challenge was posted to Minecraft Forums (linked below) and popularized by various youtubers. Hope you enjoy the video!

It's so cool to see people still doing the 404 Challenge. I remember when this was a huge thing in the Minecraft community back during Beta.
dang strideo, youre superrr famous :D
I've been seeing more golden age minecraft videos come out now and it makes me feel so nostalgic.
Was on xbox days
I remember doing it when I was 11 back in beta! I remember trying out other seeds like 303, 707 etc and all the seeds back in beta generation were so memorable.
the lava walls give off such a nostalgic feeling.. back then lava was "fancy" as lightning
especially with glass
Clearing a dungeon and installing lavafall windows for the perfect green-orange aesthetic
It's not just the beta gameplay, there's something in your calm tone and open dialogue that delivers the feel of what RUclips felt like around 2011-2012. Thanks for introducing me to this challenge
This is exactly the feeling that I have mostly the entire video. It's so chill and simple
It reminds me of "Coes Quest" or something like that. Back then, youtube was so new, if you clicked on episode 1 of a series, all of the suggested videos would just be the rest of that series in order. It was kind of nice that way.
Very true , after watching a little bit of video i immediately checked the date and i wasn't expecting " 4mo ago " in there
Brings back memories. I remember doing the 404 at college LAN parties - and seeing who could last the longest.
that sounds like such a fun experience, i bet you beat them all :D
@@gengarjuice69 Only because I was the only guy in my group that understood the concept of circle strafing. My combat abilities peaked before the introduction of enchantments though.
@@Telmachwow
Things like this challenge make me wish Minecraft had a "cave only" world gen option, especially post caves and cliffs update with all the new underground biomes and generation.
It'd be so cool! Especially since there are so many new ways to get food underground
From what i remenber when there was custom world types on java there was one where overworld biomes generated as caves and there were normal non grassy caves mixed with overworld caves, idk what version this was but i know it existed. No clue why they removed it
i think you can edit the nft file and do that by increasing the ground height lol
I know it's modded, but the Stoneblock modpack sets you up in a small room underground, and you have to expand your base of operations from there. It does rely on using _Ex Nihilo_ (lit. "From Nothing") to get organic materials like saplings, seeds, and such, and has a lot of extra objectives due to mods. If that underground experience does interest you, I'd highly recommend it!
@@KysEcstacy i dont think it was a specified world type but there used to be a customization option called buffet that i think you could do that with. it was removed in 1.18 cause it was buggy i think
It's nice to watch a let's play where someone just, yaknow... plays a game. No cutaways, no exaggeration, no clickbait, just playing a game. This was an enjoyable watch. ❤
Refreshing to see a Minecraft challenge that isn’t presented over enthousiastically. Just a guy playing Minecraft like the old days
8:49 When lava flows, it firsts set the block to magma, then sets the data value to one to signify that it has flown away a single block from th source. After this is causes a block update
The act of destroying a redstone dust, causes a block update in the water tile, at which point the lava still thinks it is a source tile. This causes the water to turn the lava to directly change into obsidian. Then it sets the data on the obsidian to 1, which has no effect on the obsidian, before updating the water again
You're addicted to this game
You use lava falls for light in your basement too! That is GREAT! *UPDATE* Made this comment about the thumbnail before i watched the video. The video was amazing. That is all lol
This is such a 2011 comment for such a 2011 video…
The thumbnail made me click!
i make a whole wall of lava and cover it with glass
I didn’t get it?
@@andrjsjan4231 it's an old person thing
"the enemy of art is the absence of limitations" -orson welles
Omg. I remember watching niche(at the time) RUclipsrs doing the 404 as a kid. And now here I am watching it with my son lol
thats so cool! hope you guys enjoyed it :D
WOAH WTF........ damn time actually just went what the fuck. shit is getting too real
wonderful
“Good for you pops” we all say in unison
Remember, crops grow faster in rows!
If they're in a massive clump of a field like that, they actually grow slower. They prefer to be in isolated rows, not entire grids.
actually didnt even know that but it makes sense lol, fortunately at this point ive played enough where i have almost a full chest of bread lol, im gonna need more space
@@gengarjuice69
It used to be common practice in these old versions to actually keep Wheat stored, and only craft Bread as needed, since Wheat stacks while Bread doesn't.
It actually makes Bread a very good bulk food source, which also kinda mimics reality and makes it more interesting.
yeah i have a chest for seeds, chest for wheat, then one for bread. it comes in handy sometimes to be able to grab some quickly rather than needing to craft first. not being able to stack food is rough, it's the main reason i play peaceful in my main lets play@@DonnaPinciot
this content goes so underapreciated, its crazy how such great content gets overlooked
it didnt man, 6 days 4k views its nice for a starting channel, actually its perfect, soon it will be more views
Ive seen 3 different videos on the 404 challenge uploaded the past two months all from small creators and all have done a wondeful video and take on the challenge
Possible goals for this series:
- collecting every block and item available in the game (excluding ones from the surface)
- mining entire chunk (up to the surface level)
- creating "ancient" underground city
- creating every possible farm
- finding slimes (without exploits like slime chunk finders)
- finding every type of dungeon (zombie, skeleton, spider)
- collecting cat and 13
- creating minecart system
- building a giant tree
Your videos are the perfect balance between engaging and comfy, I cant wait for more of these episodes!
thanks! i'll post another towards the end of next week :D
ur so chill is so nice
I tried this challenge without knowing half of these rules... Looks like I'm gonna have to start over!
let me know how it goes :D
@@gengarjuice69he did not let you know
@@SiLouYoungIII i know, super tragic and sad
This just feels like a very classic Minecraft playthrough, and I love it. Kind of taking me back to the Yogscast days. Ah memories...
i really like the classic style of this video, mostly simple jump cuts with no over the top editing or music
just you, the commentator, and the gameplay :)
Never heard about this challenge, despite it being 13 years old, and it feels so interesting. Not being allowed to use torches kinda reminds me of when I was playing with the "from the fog" mod and I was desperately trying to find ways to light up caves without Herobrine destroying my torches. That world is gone now cuz I gave up, modern Minecraft is already too complicated for my simple brain
Nah, modern Minecraft isn't complicated. It just has bad progression, pacing and ruins everything that old Minecraft built.
@@shawermusforeal, I have to Google every villager table. But I'll be damned you can build all of them with stone and wood.
It's so weird and different from the original crafting table, cheat and furnace
with all the string you're getting you can make wool and put ducks there too :3
you are evil for this suggestion, i might have to make some ducks lolol
Lighting your base with nothing but lava and fire is metal as fuck!
I miss the f3 key showing mob ids above their heads. Yeah it was so OP and needed to be removed but it was so convenient for troubleshooting mob farms :P
super op, i wish i could use it in this world lol
This video reminds me that of how great, beautifully simple and refreshing minecraft playthroughs can be.
Thank you for keeping minecraft youtube special, your audience (however much) are a devoted bunch :)
Another rule i remember from the 404 challenge was that you need to be in the cave by day 1 nightfall. You didn't break it anyway but it limits your ability to gather food.
I love how calm and simple this is, gives really comfortable vibes!
Yay! Glad I found you, I've been dying for a new "old school" Minecraft series. What better than 404?? Thanks for the upload, you have a great vibe and nice voice to listen to! I hope to see more!!!
thanks! im glad you liked it :D
I don't know why but when you first landed at the bottom of that cave, I felt a wave of nostalgia.
Opened RUclips and saw this first thing on my recommended page! Had to check it out because I LOVE the 404 challenge. Liking it so far, you're very pleasant to listen to.
Oh my god this brought back so many memories. I completely forgot about this challenge, but the second I saw your title I knew exactly what it was! Fascinating piece of Minecraft history!
Those diamonds were a blessing from the gods
actually tho! given my luck in my regular lets play i was expecting to spend all episode finding 3
Just had this pop up in my recommended. Got a real nostalgic feeling seeing some old-school Minecraft as someone who started playing way back in early beta. Definitely gonna have to catch up on the other episodes tomorrow!
Awesome vid, looking forward to more of the series. Recently came across your world tour and have been really enjoying what you make, keep it up:)
Seeing the old nether is also nostalgic
It's weird that this actually has that old playthrough energy. Super fun watch, good job
Love this challenge such an interesting part of minecraft history
Also oh my god the redstone obi trick was such a nostalgic moment for me I remember learning about it a long time ago
Instant sub! Never saw this challenge back then, but your style of video just takes me back to the best days of my childhood watching bananapielord, X's adventures, caliform and a bunch of others.
"you guys got any water?"
"give me some water, please"
the giant waterfall: *sad water noises*
I'm sold with this video, subbed
i just happend to stumble upon this, but with the beta minecraft/textures and how your comentary., it is super relaxing and just a comfy and cool watch!
im going to see what else you have. im excited! ^-^
This is this first video I've ever watched from you I find it a very interesting video you got a sub and like thanks man!
This video feels like an oldschool lets play. In a good way. Its actually refreshing to see content that doesnt try to be eye candy ať every second.
Great video! Loved watching 404 challenge videos back in the day.
thanks! glad you got a little blast from the past :D
I've just found this and I'm really enjoying it. I hope to see more in this series!
The 404 challenge was one of my favorite things from early Minecraft and I had no clue it's still going today. I was talking with my friend the other day about how cool it would be if this challenge made a comeback even if it's in some sort of modern equivalent.
i'm living for this series please keep it up long term.
Just stumbled upon your channel now, I remember doing this challenge back in the day. You've got all the right things to have a million subs! Happy yting!
holy shit man was that obsidian generator widely known in the old days? because that woulda been huge
These is amazing, looking forward for the upcoming episodes! Saw your post on Reddit
ooo fancy, glad you liked the video :)
That is actually so fucking cool, I've never heard of this before
also, your new banner is sick
i liked the old profile picture more tho, it was standing out more
hope you enjoyed something new lol. as for the new branding ye, i like the banner, the pfp i just wanted something more simple and something to match. i think at some point ill make a second channel for random stuff and ill reuse the old pfp xD
The 404 Challenge was huge back in the day. A lot of OG Minecraft RUclipsrs did their own 404 series.
Lava pillars are a clever lighting method.
It was such a nice episode! This challenge sounds very interesting, you've got yourself a new suscriber :)
Great video! Really takes me back to those early 2010's let's plays. Chill vibes.
I was hit by a truck of nostalgia reading that title omg
I remember this challenge. Brings me back even though i never tried it myself. Thanks for the vid
I remember Etho mentioning this challenge when he first started his current LP world!
“I’m just a dude without pants” 😂 11:38
like #200, thank you for bringing back this all time classic
Lovely nostalgic challenge. Tis is a really nice video! Very laid-back, just like the old letsplays from back in the day.
finally a minecraft video i can watch as a teen and not feel like i’m kinda watching kids content :) just relaxing and enjoyable to watch
Great content creator. Im suprised to see this kind of content to go unnoticed. I hope more people click on your videos, you have a very calming voice and playstyle and I hope that more of your videos pop up on my home page!
i appreciate the kind words! glad you liked it :D
Man, this is a real throwback. I never played Beta myself back in the day but I was very active in consuming content about Minecraft and I always loved stuff like the 404 challenge. It's been so long I completely forgot some of this stuff, like that old obsidian generator glitch. Maybe I should go back to this challenge myself some time?
I remember me and a few pals did the 404 challenge on xbox 360 version.
It was funny af
1. Me i got wood and seeds and dirt plus coal and just went HAM digging at bedrock lvl for lava light
2. Another pal got wood and tree farmed. He also got a sheep and cow and we made beds and got milk for cakes.
3. Another pal got seeds sugarcane and crops and somehow water bucket
4. Another pal got dirt a chicken and lots of cobblestone.
5. Another friend just got mushrooms and decorated and planted the crops with lava.
It was fun and funny. Bedrock was just a 4 block high lava dripping from the ceiling and tons of slime.
We were able to meme to the nether and got crops wood and made a labyrnth.
We took a few liberties but never used torched because wood charcoal and coal were so low all the time.
Its fun and i DEFINTELY recommend with friends. Shenanigans will ensue.
real entertaining and cool to see the old stuff, you've grabbed a subscriber
I never thought I'd see the Minecraft 404 Challenge again.
Good times spent trying to survive that challenge.
Btw, the caves lit by the sun was pretty much a rule AFTER you went into the caves.
I'd like to see the challenge updated.
what a throwback. nice video
This is really cool! You have inspired me to play beta Minecraft!
I tried to do this challenge for a little bit.. It is pretty challenging since you need to gather a lot of essential stuff in the first day before going to the cave to officially start the challenge. I wish you the best of luck in this challenge!
thanks very much! also yes that first day is a big grind, i was doing my best to focus while commentating lol
I remember doing this challenge back in the day, it was one of the first Minecraft-esque sort of RUclips videos I tried producing back then. Clearly I didn't remember the rules though because I pretty much just walled myself off once I got into the cave, but to be fair I was terrible at the game back then and probably would've died instantly otherwise. Glad to see the challenge still remembered though.
Love this video, good vibes c:
I love the lighting in old Minecraft. It just get's so pitch black without a light source
Thank you for reminding me of this challenge! Super nostalgic
This sounds like the perfect setup for an ARG
I love that more and more people are getting into the old versions of Minecraft. Been thinking of doing it myself and doing similar to Zisteau when I would start in a really old version and work my way up all the way eventually to the current version.
I probably won't continue watching this series, but super nostalgic, thanks!
super nostalgic. I remember doing the 404 challenge waaay back in early highschool when beta was first launching. Very cool to see someone doing it today, all these years later. Makes me miss the early days of Minecraft.
the only sad thing about this challenge is that its hard to follow along as its so dark
this gives me the vibes of early MC youtube series :) love it!
I swear I've seen this thumbnail before
This is so cool and luckily i'm so late i've got 2 more episodes to watch:)
This type of 2013 like minecraft videos are my jam😩❤
You should really take a look at what this challenge would have looked like on 1.20.1. The seed is absolutely beautiful both above and below. I didn't know this was a challenge myself until I watched this video, so thank you for the knowledge. :D
Good voice and microphone haha, also great choice of a challenge
I NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD SEE A *NEW* PLAYTHROUGH OF THIS
Some of these textures hit me in the feels like the diamonds and the glow stone dust.
I absolutely dig the series. I hope there's more (didn't check yet)
its awesome seeing casual content of old minecraft.
"Im just a dude without pants" -Gengarjuice69
Cool video I just subbed
Nothing like the old creeper strafing gotta love it
I love how this video has the same experience as classic Minecraft let's plays where you don't watch just for the concept, but the entire things content: the gameplay, the commentary, the editing, the jokes -- it's all like going back to 2012 where you're couped up watching the yogscast and captiansparklez highlights. The challenge was good but I appreciate the fact that you don't overhype your video, you just play fun things, share them on your page for everyone to see, and add your commentary.
Thank you for reading my very long winded comment, just know that if not many people like your content, those who like it love it. So just keep up the grind, and whatever you do, don't make 100 days videos.
Man this is a nice challange and the seed make this more interesting i mean a giant cave sign me up And btw i love the lava walls
That's really cool video!
I started with early beta Minecraft when i began playing. The fact that I didnt know the F3 trick is making me rethink the last decade
Something about the old beta versions just seem so nice. It really makes you feel alone and I love the simplicity.
You have a cozy style that reminds me of the more genuine days of RUclips.
this is so refreshing, like, i feel like everyone on youtube has 1 million hours in the game they play, and they only do crazy tech, and this reminds me so much of older youtube, like just a guy having fun with a challenge. Youre awesome and I subscribed and i hope u blow up and get big. (also what version r u on!!)
Your voice is really sexy. Good Minecraft gameplay too. I love unique challenges that allow you to re-experience old versions of a game.
Your voice is awesome, very entertaining video, I'll definitely check out the seed as well
I cannot believe this isn't hyper-edited. Insta subbed.
I subcribe! This video radiates early mincraft youtube energy! I miss when all the minecraft vids were chill and entertaining to watch. This is a great video, and I would love to see more! Fun fact: i had never ueard of the 404 challenge and i clicked because of the lava falls in the thumbnail, as I utilize lava falls as a way of lighting my storage facilities.
