This is really a fantastic explanation Josh. It will help me so much in explaining the 6 Seconds Pause to the leaders and teachers that I work with! Thank YOU!!
so glad this is helpful for your work and you can share with your team! let us know how it goes! Also tell us more ideas for videos-- what would be helpful?
Finally there's an explanation that makes sense for me why I feel so out of control sometimes and overwhelmed when Im angry. I've tried counting to 10 so many times and it doenst work. But maybe I wasn't using ALL of MY BRAIN. i'll try the pause and see how it works.
Did you know that you can use this technique with other emotional states? try a pause next time you are feeling scared or too excited. let us know how it goes!
I feel like the being able to pause for 6 seconds has to first be recognized in order to pause. Sometimes I am blind sided by the emotion and then after a minute of release of frustration….., I realize I just overreacted and darn, I hate to have to apologize but often necessary. It just makes me so disappointed in myself.
This is one of the best descriptions of how Emotions work and the link between our brains, emotions, chemicals and call! And the best part is, it comes with an "Actionable Tool", aka the 6-second pause.
Wow, thank you David! I hope you check out the other videos in this series. We are working hard to bring practical tips to people so they can expand their emotional intelligence.
That's a useful technique to know, Josh. I'm referring to the idea of inserting the cookie recipe and computing the portions required to produce six batches. Thank you.
This is so much fun, a very creative way to learn the complexity of emotions and the brain and make it easy to understand. Thank you Josh, learning is always fun with you.
this is marvelous! So if I instantly shift my focus from the thought that first generates the undesired chemical to another thought or to something I happen to be doing for 6 seconds (and don't engage with that thought again), I'm gonna be able to move that undesired thought to trash?
Great presentation with practical info for managing emotions during fight or flight activation…. love the metaphor of the waterfall cascade and the pin ball machine to describe a flood of emotion and the need to pause during intense situations to neutralises the molecules of emotions and interrupt the cascade. Brilliant!
Uau! Parabens! Fantastico! Obrigada.
“Emotions are embodied.” Eckhart Tolle in his book “The Power of NOW” declares that “our emotions are our bodies’ reactions to our thoughts.” I would like to add that many people confuse emotions and feelings. Unlike feelings, emotions can be faked. I think this is because feelings cannot be filtered through the mind, unlike emotions.
Glad you watched the video-- a 6 second pause is best of you are using other parts of your brain (cognitive system). A pause is not just counting to 10. Try thinking about hard math problem, or 6 places where you want to travel on vacation once the pandemic is over. Let me know how it goes!
I feel like I'm only half-understanding this. I understand I need to think more before I react, it's what everything in my research has said, but usually when I react, it happens so fast. I find it difficult to fully comprehend how fast the "slow down" process between action and reaction should be. I keep feeling like I'm going to stare off in space and come across "slow" as I try to process a reaction. I liked the part in this about using the brain to do a quick math problem, but I think that part also confuses me, cause I suck at math and it would likely take me 6 mins to solve something simple. I don't know...
Not sure if you'll reply to this comment cause this video is 2 years old now but I'm gonna try anyways... Do you've any tips & videos on how to stop speaking unnecessarily? As in how to only speak when you know you're adding value whether it's in form of educating or entertaining? Also how to realize that even though what you're saying has value to it but that it would be of no use to say as the person you're saying it to just won't get it because they won't value it & it's better not say (sounds very rude but basically how to realize that the other person is just a fool and it's of no use to try to prove your point to them like how to choose when an argument would be of benefit & when it would be just a waste of time so it's better not to try to prove my point)
Hey. I have autism and i have big trouble considering others and their wants when saying something or performing an action. This has given me relationship troubles. People that have spent a lot of time with me often start getting annoyes at even my smaller mistakes because they know its because i failed to consider them. Such as putting a plate with the dishes while it has to still be used. Anything you recommend aside from this that may help me?
Empathy can be challenging even for people without neuro-challenges. It is a LEARNABLE response. Keep practicing and "exercising" empathy-- ask yourself (before you act) what are the possible outcomes to my action? Consider if you want to take that action or take a different action. Also you can ASK other people if your action is something they want or like. Getting more information can be a great way to show empathy because I demonstrates that you are curious about others. hope this is helpful!!
I'm curious, what is the biggest challenge you face in regard to not being able to consider other people's emotions? I mean no offense, and I'm sincerely just curious. I feel as though I almost have the exact opposite problem.

Thank you Alex! Metaphors are a great way to explain complex ideas in a more immediate way, glad you found it useful!

Glad you enjoyed it! hope you like the next one in the series! We just shot it today1
But how to create a little space, how to pause when we got angry? what should we do?
I love this Josh!
Thank you for watching Mucha! :)

Best video I have ever seen about emotions. Thank you for doing this!
Can you please provide me with some more ideas on activities that take 6secs besides the math and recipe examples you provided in the video. Thanks

Hello I want to learn this E Q Coaching.
Description is wonderful but tell us how to practice if pause and calculate doesn’t stop reaction

Okay so basically the answer is to distract myself but how do I remember to distract myself while I’m mad?

Here because I jumped out a bus instead of waiting to go to another stop
Normally it matches to my fist and my fist matches to the wall
The video is so distracting to be honest.
