    Great news recently when guitarist Andy Taylor who had been diagnosed with terminal cancer and could not attend Duran Duran's induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, was found to have beaten his stage four diagnosis and is even ready to return to the stage and recording.

    Guys, you know 3 of the 4 members of The Power Station already. The vocalist is Robert Palmer, you know...Simply Irresistible with the models playing the instruments. The guitarist is the original guitarist for Duran Duran, Andy Taylor. Bassist is also from Duran Duran; John Taylor and I don't think you've reacted to Chic yet, but you should. The drummer is Tony Thompson of Chic. While The Power Station were doing their thing, The other 3 members of Duran Duran were recording an album under the name Arcadia. You should check out the long version of Election Day from them. Next Power Station needs to be Bang a Gong.

    "Some Like it Hot" peaked #6 in 1985. Power Station was an all-star rock group comprised of singer Robert Palmer, 2 members of Duran Duran (Andy Taylor -guitar & John Taylor - bass) and drummer Tony Thompson, previously in Chic. Power Station charted 3 singles in 1985. This was the first, then "Get It On" (cover of T. Rex's "Bang A Gong" (#9) & "Communication" (#34).

    This brought up a fun memory. My Dad in his early days was a big band drummer. I think my Mom loved that until they got married and he would be off playing drums every Saturday. He kept current with the different music genres as time went by and eventually he gave up performing and his drum set got smaller and smaller. I had so much fun playing air guitar with him or singing and dancing and one day he had been away helping someone with a construction project and came home with a secret smile on his face. He had been volunteering his time, but the person rewarded him with an electric drum set. It was really compact and could be packed away when not in use. With the drums in this song I remember my Dad getting used to these new drums and all the sounds they could make and when my Mom would go off with her girlfriends, it would be drum night at home, trying out the different current music. Soooo fun. One of my best memories of my Dad.

      @@calkelpdiver No. The Power Station revived Robert Palmer's career to allow him to record his next two solo albums. If Palmer did not have the success from The Power Station, all we would remember him by his from his 1979 single, "Bad Case of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor)."
      The Power Station album was recorded in 1984 and released in March 1985. Some Like It Hot was the first single released in March, then it was Bang A Gong (Get It On) in April and then Communication in October 1985. The band toured without Robert Palmer during the summer of 1985. Michael DeBarres filled in as singer on the tour. He also came in to do vocals for the track "Someday, Somehow, Someone's Gotta Pay" for the Arnold Schwarzenegger Motion Picture, Commando, released in October 1985.
      Robert Palmer recorded Riptide in the summer and fall of 1985 and several musicians from The Power Station album also performed on this album including Bernard Edwards on bass, who produced both The Power Station and Riptide albums.
      After The Power Station tour concluded- Tony Thompson, their drummer and Andy Taylor, their guitarist also performed on Riptide. Tony Thompson played drums on all but one track (track #5) and Andy Taylor and Thompson played on Palmer's single, Addicted To Love.
      The album Riptide was released in November 1985 and Addicted To Love, Riptide's 3rd single, was released in January 1986.

    Part of the reason that Power Station existed in the first place was that the former guitarist and bassist of Duran Duran wanted to prove their cred as legit rock musicians. None of the members of Duran Duran were untalented, but since the type of music they did was about image just as much as it was about sound, they were eager to do something with a little more substance. The other members had their own side project, Arcadia, which was a lot more similar to the Duran Duran stuff. "Election Day" would be the main Arcadia song to check out.

    • @eamonconnelly8029
      @eamonconnelly8029 2 года назад +1

      No. They did not want to "prove themselves as legit musicians.? No one in the band has ever said that. Ridiculous. They wanted to work with other musicians and create a different sound. The Power Station in contrast to Duran Duran does not have "a little more substance." It's just a different substance with heavier guitar work and solos.

    • @billw715
      @billw715 2 года назад

      The original idea of The Power Station was to mix Chic and the Sex Pistol sound. This was John's sonic concept for Duran Duran which never developed. In 1983, John Taylor (with the rest of Duran Duran) went to David Bowie's Serious Moonlight Tour show in London, after the show, Tony Thompson and John Taylor went to a nightclub. John discussed doing a one-tune project, a cover of Bang A Gong with Thompson. Thompson was all for it.
      They met again in Australia in November of 1983, when Thompson was finishing David Bowie's tour. Duran Duran had just finished recording Seven And The Ragged Tiger in Australia and were about to embark on their Sing Blue Silver Tour in Australia. The two met and John got Andy Taylor involved and Thompson got Bernard Edwards to produce. The Power Station project would commence a year later.
      It wasn't about proving their playing capabilities. It was to get together to make one song and then it turned into eight songs. It was just about making music.

    The Power Station was a side project for the two Duran Duran guitarists, John and Andy Taylor, who were increasingly feeling boxed in by DD's conventional pop sound in the mid-80s. John brought in Tony Thompson from Chic as the drummer and Robert Palmer on vocals. They came together for just one album, unfortunately. That guitar solo is Duran Duran's Andy Taylor, cut loose from the tight leash of 1980s synth-pop :)

      John Taylor did not feel "boxed in" from Duran Duran's sound. He wanted to do something different and with other musicians. Andy Taylor may have felt more restricted in the band because he was not able to do in Duran Duran what he was able to do in the Power Station.
      The original idea was introduced to Tony Thompson by John Taylor. It was to do a one-tune project of Bang A Gong. About 6 months later, John got Andy involved and then a year later, when getting ready to record- John got Robert Palmer involved. Tony Thompson was not keen on Palmer- he did not feel he was right for the project- especially since the concept was to get a variety of singers to sing on different tracks. Eventually, Thompson became convinced about Palmer. Instead of a one-tune project, it became a one-album project. Thompson got Bernard Edwards to produce.
      In addition, Duran Duran's drummer Roger Taylor was involved in a smaller role with the Power Station.
