John, I have been a huge fan of your work from back in the 80s and Duran Duran through the amazing work you put into Power Station. Totally enjoying this series with you walking us through your biggest hits.
Was never a Duran Duran fan, but RUclips bubbled these videos on to my feed for some reason, and John's really winning me over- this is the third one I've watched (starting with Rio) and am really loving them!
"To get the lyrics, I had to go to the Bahamas... but that's how it was in the 80's"... LOL. This series is fun, you're a fascinating storyteller and teacher, John.
John, you have no idea how much I appreciate these mini-tutorials. The first song I ever learned on bass was "Save a Prayer", all the way back in 1985. So many amazing Duran Duran songs and phenomenal bass lines - "Last Chance on the Stairway" and "Rio" were two of my favorites. I learned everything off the Power Station album as well. That said, Notorious is still my overall favorite DD album - I learned every song off it and would play the album start to finish on bass regularly. Your playing and composition were, and are, inspiring to me 35 years later - any time I feel myself needing 'centered' on bass, I put on early Duran Duran and get back to my roots. Thank you so much for taking the time to do these videos!
All these years I never noticed the salsa flair in Tony’s drumming for this song. I so loved The Power Station. Every song on the debut album was beautiful to hear and layered. Had hoped to hear more great things from the group. Thank you so much for sharing a little history into the song. RIP to the legends. 😌💙🖤🙏🏾✨
Thank you for this The power station is the best pop/progressive band ever RIP tony the best Everyone involved were all great talents and they let their colors fly Since this came out in the 80s and I grasped great music as a kid 39 years of drumming Thank you and love u all

this is so great ..for us kids who were born in 79..like me ..i always wanted john to play bass with..like he was with bernard..lol..these vids are like being able to do that..thx john..love all the bass lessons
I thought having Tony Thompson on drums is what gave The Power Station such an incredible drive and always loved that bass line. I have to say going to the Strange Behavior Duran Duran's concert in 87 at Wembley and seeing Steve Ferrone on drums had that same feel too! He was incredible as well. The intro to Vertigo where he plays the snare on the off beat... Such a small change but had a huge effect. Great drummers can really make or break a song specially combined with great bass lines. You have it with Roger and you had it with Tony and Steve. Cant; wait till you get to my personal favorite album of all time. Notorious!
I hear you and I couldn't agree more! Ferrone's "out" drumming on Vertigo's intro is just fabulous, you can't go wrong with a guy like that holding the sticks! I've *always* wondered if it was rehearsed or if he just _felt_ doing that on the fly (very very risky). Simon gets just in time with the vocals, which mustn't have been very natural or easy in a pop context. Amazing. And kudos to Warren too, he was wild on that guitar! And space here to mention Curtis King on backing vocals and Stan Harrison on saxophone (among other skilled side-men on that tour), that was some serious line-up!
@@evanjazzista I agree. To this day and till the end I will always say the worst thing Duran did was get rid of Warren. Biggest mistake ever. Andy came back and then left again, they should have brought him right back if he was amenable to it. By far the best guitarist they had in the group, and yes, that line up with Curtis King who blossoms on back vocals and Stan on Sax was fantastic. The best line up and the best tour I saw, and I'n not just talking Duran Duran.

I was a hard core DD fan … the music, the obscure lyrics, the sexy guys and but John’s bass and handsome face always moved my soul. I just came across this video and guess what, nothing has changed. I am now 50 and apparently still have the hots for John and his bass!!! 😂🥰 Keep playin’, Love, you will always have a place in my “Pleasure Groove”! BTW, The Powerstation was HOT!!! I, too, was sad there wasn’t another album.
Some like it hot remains awesome after 36 years, for each single note. Thanks for the insight John, and it's a pity the Bernie Edwards, Tony T. and Jason were called off duty very prematurely. There is such a lot of hard rocking, funky music still to be played! The 12" vinyl will ALWAYS be in proximity of my Technics DD-33. (Yes, I am retro and won't apologise).

Thanks!! Power Station had an unique sound and way to put together great musicians (Andy and John), and the voice of Robert Palmer - also great was the way Tony Thompson hit those drums like there was no tomorrow, but with great skills and tempo. Man, I miss that!!
John--thank you so much for taking us on this odyssey! Can you please do Get It On? It's so nice to have these videos! Rest in Power Tony, Bernard, and Robert!
This song is one of the most powerful songs I've ever heard in my life. It's like a guilty pleasure for a kid that's not supposed to be experiencing adult things. Yet this song is raw power and life.
Watching legends explain great moments in rock is something special man. This whole thing is dope from start to finish. An unapologetic look back at a decade that these guys owned. Duran Duran fucking owned the 80s.
If you only knew how much I love Duran Duran, my sister & our cousins idolized them. I’m 47 years old now, and hearing their music fills my ❤️ heart. I just watched a documentary on Duran Duran on Direct Tv. I highly recommend it. Thanks for putting up these videos. Duran Duran is epic!
The moment I heard that Tony was forming a new band I knew it was going to be epic. The Power Station showcased John's talent. In Duran Duran he really didn't get much respect from most bass players but that all changed when The Power Station came out.
Actually John and Andy started the project and got Tony, Bernard and Robert on board. Cause Duran Duran was on a respite and they needed to do something that satisfied them. So they started it.
I love JT on the bass in the Duran records, and when Power Station came out, I saw him unleash his talent. That's how a musician should play bass, full of expression ♥
Saw the Serious Moonlight tour twice: Wembley Arena and the Milton Keynes Bowl. The Arena gig amused me because the "fashionably late" crowd who are always too posh to see the support band turned up to find that Bowie _was_ the support act and they'd missed his first set! Twats!
OMG, I was the biggest fan! Duran Duran has been with me pretty much my entire life. Was in 1st grade 1981 when Girls on Film came out, loved Power Station and again in 1987 when Notorious Album came out I was out of my mind in love with John Taylor! I think he used to have an apartment on W. 79th street and Columbus ave in NY and me and my friends would always walk by hoping to see him. Don't remember how we came to that conclusion though! I even took bass lessons for a while. Amazing and so happy to see this! I am a forever fan!
Holy crap, this is amazing. The Power Station's self-titled is the first album I ever got, aged 10. I wasn't even a huge Duran Duran fan, but The Power Station? I wore that cassette out. What a great service to all us fans for John Taylor to talk us through this. He ought to be rightly proud of what he's accomplished, and that's only made more evident by watching this. If all my favourite bands did tutorials like this for their entire catalogues, I'd be sitting in front of RUclips all day.
Getting to see John on a weekly basis as he describes his process and shares a little of what it was like to 'be there' is the very best thing to come out of this isolation. Thank you, to everyone involved.
What I realize through this bass session by John is that The Power Station album needs to be remixed so that John's bass playing is more front and center. The problem with the released mix is that on songs like Some Like It Hot the combination of the heavily effected drum sound and the horns bury everything else in the mix, namely the bass. Andy's guitar pierces through the mix quite nicely. It's John's stellar bass playing that needs a stronger spotlight. It would be really cool to get the entire Power Station album remixed from top to bottom including taking the effects off the drums so that they don't overpower so much. Get those drums off steroids and punch up the bass! Also, I wish John had spoken briefly about why he wasn't involved in the 2nd Power Station album LIVING IN FEAR in 1996 which brought back Robert Palmer both in the studio and onstage. With the passing of Bernard Edwards, Drummer Tony Thompson and Robert Palmer I'm sure John regrets not dropping everything else to be involved. While Bernard replaced John on bass for the sessions, it's really sad that John wasn't a part of it all.
I have always been a fan of John Taylor's and I still am. I loved the POWER STATION album so much that I had to buy a second copy of it cause I wore out the first one. Thanks for the music.
JOHN TAYLOR, the original 80s boylet. ❤

This song is one of the most powerful songs I've ever heard in my life. It's like a guilty pleasure for a kid that's not supposed to be experiencing adult things. Yet this song is raw power and life.
I just love watching him break down the song in small parts so he can explain the creative process.
"Power Station" was such a great album.. even now I listen in my car often especially to the song 'Go to Zero'
Saw Robert Palmer live in Leeds in 83. Extraordinarily talented musician. He absolutely felt beats and his voice really was an instrument.
Murderess was my fav PS song but still an one off iconic album.
YES, and had a great solo from Andy. "Go to Zero" was a great track, too...
Thanks Caroline, beloved fan of good music. How are you doing today?
Watching legends explain great moments in rock is something special man. This whole thing is dope from start to finish. An unapologetic look back at a decade that these guys owned. Duran Duran fucking owned the 80s.
Always was a vastly underrated bassist in Duran's heyday. Great to see the recognition you deserve.
Jaw droppingly gorgeous too.
I saw the Power Station in Cincinnati, Ohio on August 16th, 1985 - AMAZING concert!
with what Lineup?
Dude, you’re undoubtably one of the greatest musicians ever! Thanks for your work! Everything a real masterpiece! Greetings from Brazil!
And yet more greetings from Brazil, John Taylor! 👏👏👏🤩
Faço minhas as suas palavras, Sérgio. 😉
John has always been "down to earth" he's not stuck up AT ALL
RIP to the great funk drummer Tony Thompson, and Bernard Edwards.
You bet. And its funny to hear musicians now giving him love.
Just heard John Taylor got COVID-19 back in March. Glad he recovered.
Sorry I missed your birthday! So I bought a pop rocks #130 john Taylor vinyl figurine. Hope you had a awesome birthday I know you did .
The summer of 1985 was one of the most meaningful times of my childhood. This song was on MTV and radio all the time.
BEAUTIFUL JOHN LOVE WHEN YOU EXPLAIN ON THE MUSIC
Getting to see John on a weekly basis as he describes his process and shares a little of what it was like to 'be there' is the very best thing to come out of this isolation. Thank you, to everyone involved.
Great segment. I loooved that record. So fresh! Thank you John for putting this together! Simply awesome!
I LOVE THE POWER STATION!!! TONY THOMPSON WAS A FREAKING GENIUS!!!
The power Station was incredible. Thank you for the great music.
Not sure if I'm correct or not, but I think he might have been in rehab at the time.
Yeah, John was in rehab during the time.
I have always been a fan of John Taylor's and I still am. I loved the POWER STATION album so much that I had to buy a second copy of it cause I wore out the first one. Thanks for the music.
oh hell ya, best damn into to a song!!! Was at KROQ and have pictures when you guys were promoting Power Station. RIP Robert Palmer
I remember the interview! 'Golden Chablis ~ So Easy to Love '
