Robert was 57,he couldn't bring himself to let go of Alchohol after a Liver transplant, within a year after the procedure, that's why in U.K. & U.S.A. doctors are reluctant to approve it for Alchoholics
I read Tony's inspiration was John Bonham from Zeppelin. You can hear the influence. Now both guys are having Heavenly Drum Off competitions with each other, I like to imagine, lol!
This is Robert Palmer singing for this group...same guy you just heard singing Irresistible...he has loads of cool stuff. He's a legend! BERTO got it...
Yep, I remember when this song came out. Really terrific these young folks are getting into great music! (btw, and your picture's really pretty too, Tracy! lol)
I was disappointed you didn't like the chaotic intro... I have always loved it. Such a cool contrast from the heavy, steady beat of the rest of the song. Ah well.
Robert Palmer (Simply Irresistible), John Taylor (bassist/Duran Duran), Andy Taylor (lead guitar formerly of Duran Duran) and Tony Thompson (drummer/Chic). Sadly Robert Palmer and Tony Thompson passed away within months of each other in 2003, heart attack/cancer respectively, so we never got to get another album. This was when John and Andy wanted to do something creatively different than what they'd done with Duran Duran. The other members of Duran Duran, Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes and Roger Taylor, took that time to form Arcadia and branch out with their own creativity.
The Power Station did have a second album, Living In Fear, released in 1996......Bernard Edwards took over the Bass because John Taylor was going through divorce and drug rehab at the time. To tell the truth, Bernard probably played some of the Bass parts on the first album too :-)
Thanks guys. The group consists of Robert Palmer (singer), John Taylor (bassist for Duran Duran), Andy Taylor (lead guitarist for Duran Duran) and the great Tony Thompson (drummer of Chic and David Bowie). Tony was a hard hitter and awesome. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Yes! Now do “Some Like It Hot”. Really enjoyed The Power Station way back when. 😊 But it was a supergroup really, and named after the famous recording studio.
This song is dope AF! The drums, bass, guitar and smooth sultry vocals are amazing!!! But you kids probably don't know about real musicians these days.
Respect to the original of course- however, we jammed hard to this back in the day!! Man, the memories.. Please do another MEGA hit of theirs called “Some like it hot.” And this is Robert Palmer (simply irresistible) singer of Power Station- 💖💙🤘🏼
Oh yes the 80's, Miami Vice, coke and the clubs. Yes this song got the ladies out there and there was always one lady who had this song down pat with her Aqua-net hair. Yeah and some like it hot was good too
About Tony Thompson the awesome drummer: "The Live Aid charity benefit concert in 1985 saw Thompson filling in and playing with the Power Station as well as joining the remaining members of Led Zeppelin on stage (along with Phil Collins) at John F. Kennedy Stadium. Page, Plant and Jones then invited Thompson in England for rehearsals for a Led Zeppelin reunion which was canceled by Jimmy Page after Thompson was badly injured in a car crash."
John Bonham was one of Tony Thompson's drummer idols. Tony revealing that to John Taylor was one of the motivations in putting Power Station together. They wanted a rock outlet.
First time I heard this song, back in the ‘80s, I immediately said, WOW who is drumming, it sounds so tight and powerful and of course I discovered Tony Thompson..
The sound system in my second car made the intro to this song sound ahhhhmaaazing. I would have been happy to just play that on a loop for a while, which I did on a regular basis. I still love that intro.
If you do randomness in a certain way, it’s no longer random. I played this so much in 85. It was one of my “go to” songs that year. Played the crap out of it in my El Camino tape deck. LOL!
Thompson pounding those Drums, John slapping that bass and Andy wailing on that guitar... those instruments know what they did... and they got punished!
This was a “supergroup” in the 80’s and the guy singing is Robert Palmer who you probably know from his solo hits Simply Irresistible and Addicted to Love. You also have probably heard his true classic that goes “Doctor, Doctor, give me the news, I gotta bad case of loving you. No pill is gonna cure my ill, I gotta bad case of loving you”.
@@jamalsampson9389 oh yes! The 80’s is my thing- I was a teen during the 80’s- I also love quite a bit of 70’s and early, early 90’s too! Power station rocked hard! 😁
RIP Robert Palmer. Loved this entire album. Went mostly under the radar when released, despite Palmer & part of Duran Duran being in it. But all the songs are banging!
You kids today are lucky to have music from the past in the current and in the future! It only keeps getting better and better as time goes on as long as you let music in your heart no matter what genre it is!
Andy & John Taylor (Duran Duran) join Palmer on this project. Showcasing their guitar and bass talents respectively. After this, Andy went on to do a solo career that was more rock and guitar driven than previous projects, doing his own vocals. MTV glory days.
This takes me back to my junior year of high school. The Power Station is still on of my favorites. They followed up with a second album years later but didnt do as well. This whole album is awesome!!
Brad, you need to listen to that intro a couple times more so it make sense to you, cuz then it sounds really awesome. Throws you off the first time you hear it, but then it becomes so cool once you know what's coming.
LOVED Power Station when this album came out (yes, album! I bought everything on vinyl, and played them once, while dubbing to cassette). It was a staple in my BMW when driving the Autobahn, along with Def Leppard, Motley Crue, and White Snake....
Power Station was a supergroup that recorded a bunch of great songs in the short time they were together. The first supergroup i can remember from the 80s was Asia, another band worth reacting to.
I think they did a nice rendition of the original--heavier bass, guitar and drums at the forefront. Definitely both versions reflect the time periods they were in.
You're right, the song "Bang a Gong" is a Rock song and that's the way most of it was delivered but the opening studio-produced "digital chaos" was a way to make the song ready for the dance clubs of the mid-1980's. At the time it made perfect sense for them to add that opening. The rest of the album is KILLER!
I remember the first time I played this song for my son in law, he was wearing headphones and he looked at me and was shouting "it's skipping", I couldn't stop laughing, he just didn't know the song started like that 🤣...we miss you Austin
It's great to see the division in opinions of this cover. The original by T Rex is great, but this has that 80's oomph to it thanks to each member of the band. Palmer's vocals are soulful, and that John Taylor bass stands out, as always. Tony Thompson's drumming drives it and Andy Taylor's guitar gets a spotlight moment as well. It's obviously not about the lyrics, but the kickass attitude of it all.
I had this album back in the day. I love this version! We had a great time rocking out to this in high school. Love it, great memories! Robert Palmer is the one singing. He sang ‘Addicted To Love’ among others. Died of a heart attack at 54. Way to young!
Awesome cover by this super group. Robert Palmer, the Taylor brothers from Duran Duran and the late great killer drummer Tony Thompson from Chic. Love the sound they got.
Yep, the below comment nailed it, Robert Palmer has had a lengthy career. I believe he started with a group called Emerson, Lake and Palmer, went solo on his own and then created this group, Both the bass and lead guitarist are former Duran / Duran members and the drummer is from another well known group (just can't put a finger on it. If you like this song you gotta listen to "Some like it hot".
The beginning is weird. They never played that part on the radio, so I actually wasn't familiar with it. I love the force Palmer sings with at the end.
Another 80's supergroup you should check out is The Firm. Satisfaction Guaranteed and/or All The Kings Horses would be a good start. The band was made up of Vocalist Paul Rodgers (Bad Company), guitarist Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), drummer Chris Slade (Uriah Heep) and bassist Tiny Franklin.
Tony Thompson's powerful drum sound, John Taylor bass rappin', Andy Taylor slinky guitar playing and Robert Palmer's soul voice got that hot chick in the center moving...and that's what it's all about.
Monster band! Only one album together, basically a Super Group! Besides the venerable Robert Palmer on vocals, you've got the fully-stomping Tony Thompson on drums and the guys from Duran Duran on Bass and Guitar! FAT!!
Heartbreaking that this is the version you got to hear instead of the mysterious & cool T. Rex original. This one sounds like it should play on the end credits of an 80's cop movie.
I LOVED Power Station back in the day -- Robert Palmer singing, John Taylor on bass and Andy Taylor on guitar from Duran Duran, and Tony Thompson from Chic on the drums. Give "Some Like It Hot" a listen, as well as "Murderess" (totally underrated, IMO) and "Still In Your Heart" (a slower vibe.)
I got this unique and only Power Station album in 1985. And still have. They were a super-band: John Taylor (great bass player) and Andy Taylor from Duran Duran, Tony Thompson from Chic and Robert Palmer (RIP both of the last two)
Tony Thompson did the drums also on Robert Palmer’s solo Riptide album. And Madonna Like a Virgin. And some work with David Bowie and Diana Ross, and of course Chic.
These kids don't know what time it is! This rockin' shit came out during my generation of the 80s! Great musicianship by this band! Especially Tony Thompson! He pounded that shit for real! Great production by the late Bernard Edwards of Chic, Thompson's former bandmate.
I like the way your faces lit up when you heard the bass solo. That let me know you were really listening. I get the feeling that the young lady either has some musical training or she listens to a lot of guitar solos because it looked like she knew exactly what direction this guitar solo was going in by the way she was shaking her head.
The start of this song is what cocaine in the 80s did to your brain LOL The singer Robert Palmer named his solo album “Heavy Nova” after the idea of heavy metal bossa nova, which is what Power Station mostly is, especially their other hit “Some Like It Hot.”
This is not the single, which does not have that intro & is quite a bit shorter. It just kicked in with that drum roll you hear after the intro. This is the 12" extended version, which oddly enough, if memory serves, ended up being the album version as well.
Man Tony Thompson beat those drums like someone owned him a lot of money!! RIP Tony
like they stole from him.
The drums make this track for sure. I love the hi-hat open/close technique.
Tony Thompson was the back drummer of the Led Zeppelin reunion Live Aid
The great Tony Thompson of Chic was their drummer. He and Robert Palmer died within a few weeks of each other. Both very young when they died.
Such a great drummer!
I didn't realize the drummer died too
Robert was 57,he couldn't bring himself to let go of Alchohol after a Liver transplant, within a year after the procedure, that's why in U.K. & U.S.A. doctors are reluctant to approve it for Alchoholics
Tony Thompson's drums are brutal, as they should be in a band called The Power Station.
Absolutely!
Agreed 💯
