Short summary of the video that you can paste in your notes. The 5 minute rule: If you want to stop procrastinating and actually get started on a big project/anything else that you are intimidated to do, set a 5 minute timer and work on that project. Once the time is up you can do whatever you want tho chances are high that you will want to finish the whole project because you already surpassed your comfort zone, which is the hardest part.
Here are the 2 reasons you've found yourself procrastinating your whole life. 1) You're not doing something you naturally enjoy and you naturally find yourself working at. If you have to force it, you'll eventually procrastinate no matter how disciplined. 2) You have subconscious fears of failure/judgement. You won't work on that essay or on your work if you're associating your value with the quality of the end result. Therefore, procrastinating will give you a scapegoat.

I needed to write a lead generator last night and I REALLY didn't feel like doing it. I sat down to do 5 minutes and forgot to stop. Two hours later I was done.
This technique really works. After I watched this video the first time, I bought a 5 minute hourglass timer from Amazon. By the time I notice the sand has run out, I’ve been working or working out 30 minutes or an hour. Thank you for this tip.
Thanks Matt, watch this during my lunch hour then tried it this afternoon. Set my timer for 5 minutes and ended up finishing the task! Will definitely do this 5 minute rule more often.
Since the COVID starts I've switched to remote work completely. I've never thought I would have a problem with focus or grabbing the momentum, but working from the couch does not give me a helping hand. Definitely, on my list to try.
I think a big problem with “procrastination” or “not having the energy” to do something is that our worlds have become incredibly comfortable (evolutionarily speaking). There must be a bigger consequence to NOT acting than there is the reward of acting. Yet, we are often confused on our risk/benefit analysis. So we THINK sitting on the couch is more rewarding than going to the gym. Either way, the threat of something greater or more beneficial isn’t there when our lives are super comfy. 100 years ago if you didn’t get off your ass and tend your farm, you died. Pretty big motivator. Now if you don’t get off your ass and cook a meal, there’s always uber eats.
I’ve gotten so lazy and blah since retiring (early I’m 44), no push for anything since I don’t have a schedule or boss… the 5 min rule actually does work, it got me back into jujitsu & kickboxing, which is helping me get my son into it & got me back into normal human shape instead of couch potato shape 🥔… thx for another great video. Have a fantastical day.. 😄👍💕
great...now I procrastinate setting the 5 minute timer! All joking aside, this is great advice. I find developing an unbreakable habit works well. I've use that habit for my daily morning walk and meditation. No matter what, that alarm goes off at 5:20am, I get out of bed, change and get walking. even in the pouring rain, I don't falter. I also took a page from Einstein and Steve Jobs with not wasting brain power deciding on what to wear. I spun it towards lunch instead of clothes. I have been eating a smoothie every day for about 3 years and pack a salad for lunch for 7 years now. Call it boring, but it saves my brain power for more important things.
Perfectly explained, thanks Matt! I learned this a few months ago and it has improved my procrastination habits and anxiety a lot (plus another great rule, if it takes less than 2 minutes just f do it!)
Thank you for this video and sharing this concept. I started listening, then stopped the video, set a timer and began as task I had needed to do for days. When I checked the timer again I only had 30 seconds left but I was on a roll. I worked some more and finished the task. It didn't even take that long and I feel so good!
I never knew that Google does sponsorships with RUclipsrs! That being said, I am pretty pleased with myself lately, I am very productive and do what I have to do! Some anxiety comes once in a while, but guess that that's normal!

Ive been doing this, this week and now im watching this video explain why my room is clean for once and my dishes havent been piling up! I love the 5 min rule. I used to think i didnt have time in the morning but ive carved out 10 mins somehow and i still have time to relax and feel good in the morning
Interesting. This happens with the Pomodoro technique, as well. 25 minutes are up, but instead of taking a break, I often just continue doing the work. Thanks for the video, Matt! 😄
I honestly wonder where id be without these videos.. So many little tips throughout the years has changed the way I work and live my life. Thank you Matt.
This is precisely why I standby the Pomodoro Method. I just need momentum and a way to discipline myself to sit down on a task, and usually two sessions/rounds will do just the trick. After that, my brain just decides to keep going not even minding the timer anymore.
I love the 5 minute rule! Never heard of it! Could see trying to push faster. I could see trying to mark off more on my todo list if i schedule a timer. Even if it’s 50% done in 5 minutes, if it helps boost productivity because I feel I have just 5 minutes towards the tough task, it’s like it’s not tough, not much, etc. Nice video!
HA I didn't even know this concept had a name to it. I usually just refer to it as "make it easier on yourself" ie, Telling myself "You don't want to workout? Fine! Go do 2 sets of bicep curls and thats it." It usually turns into a pretty decent workout. Although I completely forgot about it! This video was just a reminder that I need to keep doing more of that haha.
I used 5 minutes rule, and even a 25 minutes rule. It's when I'm stressed but I stll want to sharpen my drawing skills. Some times it's just 5 minutes drawing, but then I can be happy that I attleast did something.
Oh my god! That's a great idea! The 2 Days Rule is working for me. I'm going to try the 5 minutes rule!! The 5-seconds rule: do all these little things of everyday life that you're too busy (=lazy) dealing with, like getting your bed done, folding your shirt, picking up that pair of socks that has been laying on the floor for three days...
I feel like that if the point of the 5 minute rule is to "trick your brain" into doing hard work, your brain is going to associate the rule with doing hard work and naturally feel resistance to it. I feel like a better idea is to define a specific small task to complete that will actually advance you forward. If you still feel resistance to completing the task, you can make it simpler. The idea is that as long as you complete the task, you have made progress. I find that just working on something for 5 minutes often results in no actual progress being made, and my brain isn't usually tricked into working longer if I even manage to start the 5 minutes. An actual defined task has much more motivation associated with it. Though of course if the 5 minute rule works for you that's fine too 😅
I think of future me and how appreciative she would be so I do things now so she/I won't have more stress in the future. I might be having a horrible day that day but it'll be better if I went ahead and did the thing.
woah this is literally like when you're procrastinating but the opposite. sometimes, when watching videos on yt, playing a game, or getting up from bed: "I'll just watch a five minute video then get to work" but end up watching another video "okay, I'll do what i have to do after one more round" but end up forgetting or "I'll get up in 5 minutes/hit the snooze (a few more minutes pls)" but end up sleeping in more than intended. so when you do a task "just for 5 minutes", the task at hand becomes easier to start working on!
Crazy to think how much you can get done in just those 5 minutes. We seem to overlook this a lot and think about what we can do in 5 years, but now about what we can do right now in just those 5 minutes. Thanks for sharing this, Matt!
I like to think of future me. How future me will be really thankful that I did the dishes now or took care of chores or even took the chicken out of the freezer to defrost so I could have dinner the next evening. I also think of far off future me like I made alot of food ahead of time and froze dinners for rough days. I thank past me all the time.
@@samanthafreeman4315 This x1000. I think the same exact way and it is exactly what motivates me to get my tasks done. This especially applies to small tasks and smaller portions of large tasks. Treat future you with priority and present you will be thankful.
In fact, if you think about it, our brain is our everything. The information we receive while watching this video is stored in our brains. So, logically, I can say that I will give 5 minutes to myself or my work, but my brain already knows that it will not be 5 minutes. This can create a feeling of procrastination again (I don't have a problem with procrastination, I can do something directly, but I'm just theorizing lol) In short, we don't need to create such "5 minutes" rules for ourselves because it's probably a short-term thing (which might actually work for some people). The important thing is to think well and understand what we want in life. To understand what we need to do for what we want and what it entails. In this way, even when you are not motivated, you will be able to continue because you know your wishes. By the way, great video Matt!

FAB-U-LOUS! I really really loved this, especially the way you explained how the brain works. Some things can seem so scary when they are quite simple.
I use this idea all the time to make my kids start their homework! We call it : « the door handle is burning but in this room the carpet is smooth. Give it a try ». Sometimes we switch it for « the door frame is hitchy but the air inside is cool ». Works like a charm. They usually agree.

I loved that rule since I heard about it the first time. It's a very powerful strategy but for me, it's crucial to REALLY allow myself to stop after the 5 minutes. Because if I think "oh yeah I'm just tricking my brain to do 5 min but in the end, I won't be stopping before 3 hours", I wouldn't even do the 5 minutes. My brain won't let me fool around with it. Because my brain thinks: either I REALLY have to do ~3 hours OR I stop after 5 minutes and then feel guilty. The idea of both outcomes are a pain. So I oftentimes ended up doing nothing. Now I think: 5 minutes are better than 0 minutes and if I stop after 5 minute, it's totally okay. Taking away the pressure and working on the feeling guilty part is key, at least for me
I agree with the other comments about being willing to keep your bargain with yourself. I think that if you do that, you might be far more willing to come back and work more on the project. You can pat yourself on the back for the five or however many minutes you did, or you can beat yourself up for not doing the whole thing. I think that positive self-talk gets you more in the end than being harsh.
That last line of the video is golden - if you overthink the 5-minute rule (or any other hack for that matter), you might end up dreading it as well. There's no "perfect way" to get something done, and to me that's what truly makes Matt's content stand out - it never feels like he's pushing one-size-fits-all solutions. If it doesn't work for you, don't worry, you're not broken. Just try something new, and don't pressure yourself to be productive. You'll be fine

I love the idea of this. It's like get your mind to get hooked on the work. Get your mind to WANT to do the work.
Very true
I've done this! The 5 minute rule helped me in college and now when I'm writing a story.
I love David Allen's "2 Minute Rule" and this one works really well too!
Does it really work?
I’ve gotten so lazy and blah since retiring (early I’m 44), no push for anything since I don’t have a schedule or boss… the 5 min rule actually does work, it got me back into jujitsu & kickboxing, which is helping me get my son into it & got me back into normal human shape instead of couch potato shape 🥔… thx for another great video. Have a fantastical day.. 😄👍💕
Your videos always come to me at exactly the right time!

I'm supposed to do a bunch of tasks today, yet here I am an hour later, watching several videos on how to get things done ... Thanks RUclips!
Fall in love with being disciplined, in every area of your life. No discipline, no growth. No discipline, no positive change.
So damn true.
Yea the rule really works... I usually take my phone thinking that i will use it for 5 minutes, but i keep on using it for 5 hrs..😜
Matt: While no one is immune from procrastination
David Goggins: Hold my mentality
great...now I procrastinate setting the 5 minute timer!
Imagine getting sponsored by google! I’m watching you since so many years now and I always come back to your videos when I’m having yet another low. There are many channels but your content always kicks my but and keeps me from spiraling. I love to see you stepping up and making yourself a name! Sending peace & Love from Germany ❤️
Matt you always upload the perfect video at the perfect time. Thank you for your quick, easy to understand and enjoyable content that always ups my game in life.
Thanks :)
It looks like he is watching us and what we are doing. I can apply this rule from tomorrow morning when I get to work 😂
Yes I agree, I’ve been procrastinating a lot recently.
Fun fact: There are more planes in the ocean than submarines in the sky
@pettyyyyy. ❣️ ok

What about scuba-divers in space vs astronauts in the ocean👌👌😎😎💯💯

Matt gives amazing advice but I feel like he might not know what a tiger looks like 😂 2:22
I had the exact same thought! 😅
Yeah 🐯🐅😂😂😂
Ditto!!! Was just wondering when someone would say it.
ruclips.net/video/i3W5Owf8mDQ/видео.html
🙂🙂
Nice video!
Most difficult part is to start!!
Completing exercise routine once reached gym is much much easier than reaching gym itself.....
So that's why my procrastination works so well - I just give myself 5 min to procrastinate and end up doing it the whole day!
I used 5 minutes rule, and even a 25 minutes rule. It's when I'm stressed but I stll want to sharpen my drawing skills. Some times it's just 5 minutes drawing, but then I can be happy that I attleast did something.
Ohh great 👍👍

Though of course if the 5 minute rule works for you that's fine too 😅
Yeah, i really need this
I think of future me and how appreciative she would be so I do things now so she/I won't have more stress in the future. I might be having a horrible day that day but it'll be better if I went ahead and did the thing.
I agree my brain doesn't just suddenly wanna work hard cuz I did 5 minutes lmao, I'll sleep immediately after with no hesitation
That sounds legit
Agreed 100%
I took a break from work to watch this video to help motivate me and ended up taking a nap to your soothing voice… I think I did this right. 😮💨
Should be called the 4:55 Minute Rule! The person took a few seconds to put the phone down and move her hand to the keyboard @4:40
Lol!
Checkmate, productivity guru's.
I set all my timers to +5 sec. for this EXACT reason, wow.
@@devinnavarro4642 SAME lol
Well played 😁
woah this is literally like when you're procrastinating but the opposite.
sometimes, when watching videos on yt, playing a game, or getting up from bed:
"I'll just watch a five minute video then get to work" but end up watching another video
"okay, I'll do what i have to do after one more round" but end up forgetting
or "I'll get up in 5 minutes/hit the snooze (a few more minutes pls)" but end up sleeping in more than intended.
so when you do a task "just for 5 minutes", the task at hand becomes easier to start working on!
To the person reading this: Even though I don't know you, I wish you the best of what life has to offer 💝
🤘
Thanks millions
thank you
Crazy to think how much you can get done in just those 5 minutes. We seem to overlook this a lot and think about what we can do in 5 years, but now about what we can do right now in just those 5 minutes. Thanks for sharing this, Matt!
Alright, I’ll give this a try! Let’s see if it will kick my procrastination away. 😆
Treat future you with priority and present you will be thankful.

bro got a sponsorship from google. goated man right here. love it
That awkward phone chuck 😂
With sound effects. Lol
Incredible person reading this, you have everything there is to succeed in life, whatever that is for you. Go after the life you truly want NOW! ✨
I believe in you! Love - Nat ❤️
It works! I wanted to watch this video for just 5 minutes, but I ended up watching the entire video 😂
The problem is that I am now procrastinating on doing this 5 min rule itself.
Love all of your rules. And I could watch you all day and listen also.
That inbox reaction is too relatable 😂😂😂
I remember hearing something about this rule, and I can't wait to implement this in the future to hopefully do much better on future exams and quizzes.
*To all the hard workers out there, of course it's hard, it's supposed to be hard. If it were easy, everybody would do it. That's why its worth of achieving.*
Ive also done this for difficult tasks. I tell myself since i love Nike's so much, to "Just Do It".
The spider anecdote is probably true now that Matt lives in Australia.
It was a huntsman, wasn't it?
@@nomnomninja1 they now live in its house.
@@nomnomninja1 DEAR GOD. I Googled it but tried not to look at images, so I will just put this here for any spider-phobes, haha! "The giant huntsman spider (Heteropoda maxima) is a species of the huntsman spider family Sparassidae found in Laos. It is considered the world's largest spider by leg span, which can reach up to 30 cm (1 ft)." Luckily the Australian ones seem to be more in the realm of a leg span of 15 cm. But there is this too: "Huntsman spiders of many species sometimes enter houses. They are also notorious for entering cars, and being found hiding behind sun visors or running across the dashboard." AHHHHHHH! I wonder how many car accidents are caused by surprise giant spiders...
@@sarahinsf They're really not that big of a deal. They can't hurt you, the only danger with them is, as you say, a surprise car visit. But they're pretty common in houses. My family call all huntsmans Stanley. They're pretty much harmless.
Going to put this to use immediately. As something with anxiety and probably a light dose of adhd, this sounds like an excellent tool.

Finally anuj's video helped me along with this one 😀
I came here to learn how to invest after listening to a guy on radio talk about the importance of investing and how he made $460,000 in 4 months from $160k, somehow this video has helped shed light on some things, but I'm still confused, I'm a newbie and I'm open to ideas.
It is possible to produce superior performance provided you do something different from the majority. However most of us tend to pay more
Having monitored my portfolio performance which has made a jaw dropping $370k from just the past two quarters alone, I have learned why experienced traders make enormous returns from the seemingly unknown market.
Interesting. I have a lump sum doing absolutely nothing at all in my bank account, I wanna get something started with it. You seem to be doing excellent for yourself, how do you achieve this?
@Owen Watson jr Am trading with expert Mrs Mitchell Roland, a regulated broker in the US. Met her sometime early last year at a startup funding event. She had some interesting things to say about the state of algorithmic trading today.very obviously I'm seeing the results.
@Owen Watson jr My money stays right in my trading account, my account just mirrors her trades in real-time.that's the idea behind copy trading.
I stopped procrastinating and worked throughout this video. Thanks Matt. (im on my 5 minute work hiatus now ok)
Ok so you tell your brain “just 5 minutes” and you wind up doing 5 hours. Next time you tell your brain “just 5 minutes” and your brain goes “HELL NO! You said that last time and LIED! I’m outa here fool!”
FAB-U-LOUS! I really really loved this, especially the way you explained how the brain works. Some things can seem so scary when they are quite simple.
How do we protect from Google?
Good morning! I've been useing a timer for studying and cleaning for as long what I can remember. The best decision for productivity!

I use this idea all the time to make my kids start their homework! We call it : « the door handle is burning but in this room the carpet is smooth. Give it a try ». Sometimes we switch it for « the door frame is hitchy but the air inside is cool ».
Works like a charm. They usually agree.
Just to say, whatever topics you pick your videos are so high quality ! Whether it is the knowledge in the video but just the editing is everything !!!! I love it
I am just getting out of my sickness and i just planned tomorrow is gonna be that day, when i get some things finally done. This vid appeared just when i needed it. Thanks for reminding about that method
I've spent 10 minutes cleaning my house yesterday and it's half dirty now 😂
That's exactly what I need now, a study year started in September, but I still procrastinate. Thank you, Matt !
Matt's rule videos are 🔥 The 2 Day Rule is the best productivity tip I've incorporated into my routine all year, and the only reason I've stuck to some hard-to-maintain habits.
As someone in cybersecurity, that ad portion about cybersecurity was really nice. I know it was sponsored and probably had notes from Google but it's still great that someone with as big a reach as you is talking about bad passwords.
You know u made it when google is sponsoring your vids! 👍😃📈👏
" u don't have to be great to get started but u have to get started to be great "
" The hard part is getting started " 😏
It’s true. I was going only watch the first 5 minutes of this video, but I watched the whole thing 😄
Thank you for this! I keep feeling like my rational brain portion is causing me to develop unrealistic time frames and to ignore my emotions. Then my emotional state is awful.
