How do you actually put an end to the practice of perpetual self-sabotage known as procrastination? Well you could try all the planning strategies, productivity apps and color-coded schedules in the world. But, they won’t work until you address the emotional triggers at the heart of procrastination.
When you break it down there are really just five procrastination triggers that get in our way most often. And once you start to identify these triggers at their core you can finally stop putting things off.

Man, I wish creators would timestamps in their video descriptions
I love how I always end up watching these videos while I'm procrastinating...
😂😂😂
😂😃😂
I opened a comment section just to find this!
SERIOUSLY! 😂
Step 1- admitting ur problem 😆🤣😂
I procrastinate because i believe future me is more productive than present me.
Damn
If uou arent produtive now, what makes you think you will be in the furure?
@@hugoantunesartwithblender I'll be wiser :))
Smartest thing i've ever heard

pls don't laugh, it's so sad. People making a joke out of procrastination only promotes and encourages it, and reducing the conviction to not do it :(
1 - Fear 01:14 - (Fear of tasks, failure, being judge, not living up to our expectations, not living up to others expectations, messing up, discomfort, not knowing what to do next)
Solution: Try to do a procrastination log (what's actually happening right now? What emotions are you experiencing? What are you afraid will happen if you fail?
2 - 02:30 - Perfectionism (Adaptive or a maladaptive)
Solution: Set a realistic deadline and commit yourself to make your project as good as possible up until that day.
Alternative solution: Let the first version SUCK
3 - 05:05 - Self-sabotage (I knew that I was a total failure)
Solution: Understand you do have value to bring to the world
Think about the success you already have, no matter how small it is, and how far you come since it got started
Stop to think about yourself damn much, focus on your work and the people
4 - 06:17- Overwhelm (Have a lot of stuff to do... And do nothing)
Solution: You need a plan with a reasonable timeline
Breaking down the large goals and doing the small tasks and spreading them out over the period of time (Consistency is the key to making progress into your goals!)
5 - 08:28- Exhaustion
Check into your phisical state
Thank you so much for such a well written summary - I’m sure it’ll be a great reference for others!
PS. It’s “physical” :)
Thank you👍
Thank you!
Thanks
I felt like I'm sitting in a therapy session, although I'm procrastinating to go there, but thanks a lot Matt, I really needed this
Im in therapy. I procrastinate on my work for the therapy that is supposed to help me procrastinate. It is getting better tho! after just 5 months!
same here mate lmfao

@@matematicarka That’s awesome, dude! Good luck on your journey - let’s hope we can finally beat procrastination :)
@@shaikhaali7447 well, as long as we are aware we will never not have the urge to procrastinate - but we will learn to recognise it and nip it in the bud
9:35 when you said "just forgive yourself" I burst into tears. I'm definitely exhausted, not lazy. Thank you for that.
Rest up G
What helped me reduce my procrastination was understanding that motivation often comes after we get started with an activity, and not before. Example: It’s hard to start reading a book, but once you finish the first page the motivation often kicks in.
Your comment really resonates. Thank you...
Hahaha the fake podcast intro thing was gold
LMAOO THIS IS WHY WE WATCH MAT
Haha 'fake' - that's a lot of faith there, @NothingButTech 😉
Oh nice, I'm definitely not procrastinating by watching this video...
Yes!
I feel matt has started having fun shooting these videos. Quality, content and humour keeps increasing in every video recently. Good for you Matt. Big Fan.
Yes, I noticed that too, the cinematography in this video is rather excellent.
*“If you don't design your own life plan, chances are you'll fall into someone else's plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much.” - Jim Rohn*
Dude this thumbnail was so accurate
It's a good reminder that self compassion is what we really need the most to break out of a bad habit sometimes. Don't fight the love, go with the flow i guess?
I have sometimes the problem that I know, why I procrastinate or why I did that thing wrong, but I still do it, probably because it is easier than to really go get things done and do the thing you wanted. When I wasted enough of my time I sometimes can catch myself and just do it. Thank you Matt for your videos, they are of an awesome quality, I really appreciate it that you are willing to put the effort in that and not slack of even if you have a solid fan base.
I was literally procrastinating the last couple of weeks about making a dr and dentist appointment, this week I did both! Then as soon as I got off the phone with the dr office, this video was posted. I found it funny.
I have this mantra of getting it to 80, once a project is 80 percent done, I know from that point It will need to be worked on less and less. I’ll still work on it to make it better but if the due date comes for that project I know I’ll be okay to let it go at whatever level it’s at.
Thanks for a great video Matt!
the fact that I'm procrastinating by watching this :)
desencadenantes:
- Fear (1:16) write down patterns (2:12)
- Perfectionism (2:33) adaptive (3:13): w/out self-criticism/maladaptive: need to be in control (3:26) : deadlines+vomit pass
- Self-sabotage (5:07) you have value and can do success+stop thinking about yourself
- Overwhelm (6:18): plan with small tasks w/ a reasonable deadline
- Exhaustion (8:35)
Matt is the kind of person I need as a friend in my life. People like him don't exist around me- or I just can't find them.
You can become this person for yourself and others :)
Phenomenal person reading this, surround yourself with people who are better and wealthier! Keeps you humble, teachable, and hungry. You become those with whom you surround yourself with! Birds of a feather flock together! You got this! 🌟
I believe in you! Love - Nat ❤️
You can't imagine how useful I find this video! Eye-opener for me! They all apply to me even though I can't say that I procrastinate a lot as I push myself forward as much as I can! xx
- I just want to let anyone who’s reading this, and going through a tough time know that it’s going to be okay. You’ll get through it! ✨
I wrote the second draft of a novel in 2020. Over the course of only seven months!
I'm yet to start revising it but while watching this video an idea came to me on how to improve this important first page / chapter.
Best one I’ve ever seen. This video can teach people to be more conscious when procrastinating. Thank you ❤️ from Russia
Matt, thank you so much. I'm crying right now, because the "forgive yourself" thing just hit me like a bus. I am working so hard at my first job after struggling in university for 10 years and barely not finishing and graduating. I am still exhausted from that journey and now I am working even harder to keep up with everyone and everything.
But this video helped a lot. I experience a lot of guilt when I procrastinate - even though I now that I need some free time in between all of this work. But I always felt ashamed of that. I will be looking at it closer now. I think I will watch this several times, it will be a guide though what lies ahead.
Thank you.
thank you. as someone who procrastinates for literally all of these reasons this video caught my attention. i'm a long time fan of your work and decided to take serious notes from this video. procrastination/avoidance behaviors have taken a major toll on my life and that has made me feel dull and exhausted. it really is EXHAUSTING to avoid things. but change takes time and like you said, we need to forgive ourselves. you truly make an impact matt.
This video was exactly what I didn’t know I needed. Helped me view some things anew and push thru my adhd to watch it without stopping to check something else.
One thing that hit me is when you forgive yourself from failures you tend to procrastinate less. Gonna try this from now on. Thanks Matt!
As an adult with ADHD, it's a mix of 1-4 and just my brain saying "yeah you need to do it, but you don't feel like you need to do it right now do it can't be THAT important."
I love how you included #5, I used to think that I was just starting to become lazy after pushing myself super hard for 5 years straight. But breaks are important to productivity too
There are so many videos like this on RUclips but this one seems to hit the nail on the head to the point where I'll watch it again to actively take notes. I'm pretty sure I'm experiencing all of the reasons you mentioned
This is so nicely summed up , i have read multiple books and articles to resolve my chronic procrastination and you just explained in some minutes. This is AMAZING
I'm taking your RUclips course right now, and it is so neat to see everything you talk about in that course implemented in your videos. I'm learning a ton not just from your content, but how you construct it as well. Thanks Matt!
I absolutely loved the twist at the end!
Sometimes you just need to give yourself a compassionate kick in the butt. 😅
THANK YOU, MATT! AS ALWAYS!
This spoke volumes to me, especially self sabotage and overwhelm. They really do work together horribly! so thanks!
PS That slow growth plug though!
Matt this video, as others of you, is so much help! And so well meditate! I started therapy just because I was going and coming in this procrastination circle. So frustrating when you have goals but all this mechanism in our brain stop us for achieving or even start to do what you now you need to do. Be aware of them is a huge step, working on it is a daily work. Thanks for your work.
You have helped me so much you truly do not know how much this has and will benefit me.I’ve learned so much and am in a better situation thanks to you.Thank you.
Much needed video ! Been getting my ass kicked in the studio between projects; business development; planning trips; building products... it's easy to "Push it to tomorrow"
Most appreciated the procrastination log!
Me watching Matt D’avela while putting off my essay:
Ahh yes procrastination bad
Always happens just before the final push of a project. I guess all 5 hit us at the same time. Great video Matt !!
Matt, this was so spot on... I'm starting my procrastination journal and writing notes on what you said. "Stop thinking so much about yourself". Darn, somebody needed to tell me that.
I haven't heard most of this advice before so thank you. I like listening to your podcast with Tom as well, you are two smart cookies with a beautiful heart.
Wish you well!!
Thanks for this video !
I was talking yesterday about many projects I've never finished to my friend because I'm a procrastinator...
And thx to your video, it brought me light in my life. I understand why it "blocks". You're already described procrastination but this video is much better, well released !
Thanks Matt. You made me feel a lot better. Forgive yourself... It's something I should start doing more often ♥️
I feel called out with the "perfectionism" and "fear" on the nose!!!. Thanks Matt for helping me and all of us with beating procrastination (even though I'm currently procrastinating lol). The podcast intro was hilarious and loved the entire cinematography and smooth transitions of this video. Keep the content coming!
Best timing!!! I procrastinated a lot today and rn planning to study more tomorrow 😂😂😂
This is really great. Even when we know some of these things, seeing someone talk openly about it in the way you did here really helps. The comment, "stop thinking so much about yourself" hit different lol.
Can’t tell you how much I needed this, especially since daylight saving time ended- thank you!!
Thank you for sharing this. I’ve got a couple of wedding videos I’ve been putting off and it’s nice being able to call myself out with what I’m doing and how I can overcome those excuses and get them done.
When you said, 'are you procrastinating or mental exhausted', I breathed a sigh of relief hearing someone say it out loud. I always feel guilty because I have a big to do list but by the time I finish work I never get through as much as I would like and I feel guilty.
i adore this man i love u matt every time i have any problem like (procrasrtiantion ......) i just open ur chanel because it really helped me alot
This is great content. You covered really strong points. And perfect timing to remind myself about self compassion too. Thank you Matt 🙏
you are by far the only good thing that i got from the internet. Thank You. love from Saudi Arabia
Needed this. Thank you!
Your every single video is so well curated
Matt thank you very much, you’re an idol to me, and I trust you’re words. Thanks for making me feel better about myself, it’s a relief to watch such an episode during projects submission week in college. Thanks again🙏
Can't wait to see this video! I've been trying to pull myself up from wherever i am because it's been a long long year. Gotta' stay productive and positive! ✨✨
I love that... Self-compassion and self-forgiveness indeed...
The ending was gold! Thanks Matt!!!
Rly needed this 🤗thank you
this video is everything i needed. thank you so much!
Perfect timing, as I was busy procrastinating!
Google seems to know me too well
This video is so nice I was totally fine till the part of forgiving yourself is started crying because I never to this. Thank you for reminding me
Great tips! Thanks so much, Matt.
This is my new favorite video. Deep down I needed to hear the godly words in the video since I've always felt exhausted for a couple of years now.
The last message was what i exactly needed. Thank You
Matt thank you for this video. I have been finding myself falling into the procrastination cycle for job hunting these past few months and it has wrecked my sleep schedule so badly. So I tried breaking it down into smaller steps and it is making tackling it a little easier. I think I'll still have to work on reminding myself to overcome the first four reasons at each step of the process but overall I think this video will help me a lot as I go through this process.
You’re awesome Matt. You make laugh while learning much from you. Keep up the good work.
Great video. As always!
This is so incredibly helpful! Thank you .
You are right. Using colorful notes or pretty environment doesn't matter sometimes, you need to know why and what kind of emotional state you are in when procrastinating.
I can relate with the overwhelm and exhaustion thing, thanks for the video and very nicely explained, imma fix things now.
i really needed this thank you so much
I need to do new video on my channel, but i watch this video about reason of my procrastinating)))
Thank you, Matt)))

I just wanna thank God. crazy how you can be down and have too much pride to ask for help but then when you finally do, it comes (This video).
Yesterday, I finally cleaned up my email. 10k unread ranging as far back as EIGHT YEARS. It made me stop and think to myself, "why didnt I do this before...so it's not the tasks at hand, but me." I have been this way my whole life. And focusing on the wrong "why" is why I'm in this cycle. All in all, thank for you for delving into this subject, right on freaking time.
Thank you Matt! It was one of the most helpful of your videos! It helped me reflect on my feelings and behaviours and realise that being less strict on myself can make a difference. 😊
These documentary type videos are next level
I needed this!
"forgive yourself" i felt that. Thank you
Man this really helped me out. Im all about introspection to justify feelings and what not. Or root causes to my issues, and I totally skipped it when it came to this issue. Now I suffer from Perfectionism and that leads me into be overwhelmed. Thanks
This is great. These are exactly the answers I got when asked myself deep probing questions and wrote the answers to them. Fear of failure topped each of them.
So helpful. Thanks Matt
I really needed this, thank you Matt!
Thank you so much for this. I’m emotionally touched. Your advices mean a lot to me!
I love this and sooo needed this video on today!! Thank you!!!
Your vids keep getting better and better
This is the video that actually I needed most at this moment. Thanks!
I’m grateful the timing of this episode it was so helpful ❤
Thank you so much for this video, I really needed to hear that! 💛
Love this so much!
Thanks .. it's a good and important topic 👍
Perfect vídeo and perfect timing. Thank you Matt!
Thank you for this💫
I am reading 'The mountain is you' by Brianna Wiest about self-sabotage. Crying at almost every page but also building up hope and relief. So, highly recommended!
loved the sound effects on the fight flight or freeze part!
I think the self-sabotage is my thing..... thanks for talking about that!
This is so useful Matt.
This video perfectly sums up why we procrastinate. I feel the main takeaway is to find a balance between procrastination and burnout. Take a break when necessary and don't overwork oneself.
wow thank you I needed this video so much today
You nailed this video man! Thank you for this video❤️
