So I've been noticing that some people are curious about the fact that most of the names of the people in the royal family have a 'z' in it. I'm not really sure, but I think it has to do with Asian culture, since the fire nation is based upon imperial Japan (Edit: thank you for all of you in the comments that clarified for me :D). Idk about China or Japan, but at least in Korean culture, we have this thing called 돌림자 (Dol-lim-ja). It's like a character (which is basically like a letter in English) that most of the family share (divided up into generations. ie; me and my cousins or siblings would have one 돌림자, and my dad and his siblings would have a different one). For example, the character that my (generation) family share is 희 (Hee). So, for example (not gonna be using our real names here) my cousin's name could be 희주 (Heeju), and my other cousin could be 희철 (Hee-chul). My name could be (for example, not my real name) 희정 (Hee-jung, though that's not a common name). We all share the same character- 희, in the first syllable of our name. Not sure if this is somehow tied to the fact that they all have 'z's in their name, but it's a theory I guess.
Wow this explains EVERYTHING! I have a lot of Korean friends and most of their names are so alike. For example: MinHey, MinJin, MingYu, MinYoung or SungMin. It was such a puzzle for me. Thank you for explaining 😂😄
@@serlig2078 Wow! Glad I could clear things up! But are they all family members? 'Cause the Dol-lim-ja is only for family members, and even then only in a certain generation of family. People talk a lot about how abusive Zuko's father was - and he definitely was. But we can see in just the one brief scene with Azulon that the abuse was learned. The way Ozai talked to Azulon is exactly the same way Zuko talked to Ozai. And what kind of father tells their kid to kill their own kid? I wonder is Sozin was that abusive to Azulon too. Also, I love the symbolism of the red and blue dragons. Roku's dragon was red, Sozin's was blue. In Zuko's fever dream, Iroh is represented by the red dragon, Azula by the blue. And the Firebending Masters are red and blue dragons.
Fanon theory is that Azulon wasn’t telling Ozai to kill his son when he said, “You must know the pain of losing a firstborn by sacrificing your own.” Maybe, Azulon was telling Ozai that he would have to give up parenthood of Zuko over to Iroh. Think about it. Azulon has been a politician for 23 years. He knows that another heir’s death would be an unspeakable blow to the already floundering-in-popularity royal family after Iroh’s failed siege of Ba Sing Se. On the other hand, if Zuko is adopted by Iroh, that would resolve the issue of Iroh, whom Azulon wants as his successor, not having an heir. On the fatherly side... Azulon must have cared for Iroh for Iroh to turn out the compassionate, fatherly way he did. I’d say that it’s not much of a stretch to think that Azulon also cared for his grandson, Zuko. The old Fire Lord was looking awfully perceptive as he watched Ozai present his children. I don’t think he’s blind to the way Zuko was being treated. Maybe Azulon was going to give Zuko a chance to have a better father. ...Then Azula and Ursa happened, and Ursa may have jumped to conclusions. Ozai, ambitious schemer that he is, took advantage of that. And here we are.
I also saw a fan make a comparison between the abuse and lightning in the show. Instead of learning how to create lightning like his father and his sister, Zuko learns to redirect it. He doesn't create more, just turns it away. Just like he stops the cycle of abuse in his family, rather than perpetuate more.
Ozai literally said “Screw my brother who just lost his son and is probably suffering, put me in charge and forget about him” man I would’ve been pissed if my kid said something so outrageously disgusting as well. Sure, I never would have made him kill his own son but Ozai was NOTHING like Zuko when he spoke out to his father. Zuko was looking out for others. Ozai was looking out for himself. 🤷🏽♀️
And if that was the case with “abuse being learned” then Zuko would have become him father...even at his “worst” he never was. Abuse like Ozai’s was NOT learned. He was just a sociopath, plain and simple. I agree in a sense with what you’re saying but yeah, no.
@@someone23ful Because the character's backstory still isn't fully-fleshed out, in other words we know nothing about his past/upbringing, I seriously don't think it's fair to assume that. He's evil, abusive, manipulative, and of course psychotic. But you can't just say, "oh yeah he's always been like that". It's definitely not implausible to believe or at least theorize that Ozai was taught (whether indirectly or directly) to be so horrible from Azulon. The apple never falls far from the tree. But with that being said, it's not an ultimate excuse which says "it's okay this guy was bad". No, he was still a massive ass and horrible to his own kids and the entire world.
This was amazing. As a kid I didn't really pick up on how complicated the royal family was. Watching makes me realize how broken and disconnected this family is.
I can’t believe I never connected that when Zuko cut his hair, it was the first step to his character growth and redemption. When Azula cut her hair, it was her losing herself, the start of her downfall omg this show never fails to amaze me
Thank you for pointing this out! When I read your comment, I went back to rewatch Mellan Clear’s video. Both are among my absolute favorite characters, and those parallels have always been significant to me when imagining Azula’s genuine potential for growth and healing. Thank you both, Mellan Clear for your creation and lyall p for your insight. c8
Zuko is the analogy of the "black ship" who decides to break the toxic patterns of it's family and is seen as the enemy because is the only one brave enough to heal.
Iroh learns so much because of his power, big ambition and his mistakes. He tried to advice young generation, specially his nephew, about this. Believed in redemption, no matter who are. He loved Zuko like this son, and Zuko was loved more by him than his own father. What a man. ♥
When people say stuff like this it just doesn’t make any sense. Storylines have to follow a certain path, and having your character be an evil war general for 95% of the show would make for a terrible storyline. While yes I would’ve loved to see more of Iroh especially in the 3rd season, but a whole series about him would be flat out terrible and would ruin the amazing writing of Avatar
I only realized how messed up this family was when I'm older now and rewatched it for old times sake.. like damn I really felt bad for azula the way zuko and her were raised wa snot normal and the way she just mentally lost it at the end was kind of sad..
Oh my god! The scene at 1:45. When Iroh says, 'If only I could have helped you. ' and we see Ursa in all black background and replies, 'Help me! '. Damn chills. And see closely in her eyes. You could see a grown up scarless Zuko (from that hallucinating fever and two dragon episode) in her eyes. And look at his expression. He looks shocked. He looks scared. Damn that scene is chilling. And so deep.
In a way,Iroh and Azula were very similar. The talented, accomplished sibling, favourites of their fathers respectively and successor for the throne. However, one lost everything and still managed to keep his soul and strive towards a better future, the other never had a soul.
Well keep in mind that Azula is only 14. Iroh served as a fire nation general for years if not decades so it's not as if Azula has no soul, she just hasn't had the time to mature like Iroh did. And remember, Iroh only decided not to fight for the fire nation after his son died which was later in his life.
@@ashaclark9465 if she can take over the Earth kingdom by herself,I ain't giving her any chances. And yes, Iroh repented his ways after Lu-ten's death. I mean, that was his whole point. Experiencing loss and becoming better despite it.
@@ShadowGodOfDarkness I feel like that's kinda it, no one ever gave Azula a chance. In Azulas eyes her mother never gave her a chance because she was always so stern, her uncle never gave her a chance, and Zuko never gave her a chance (but this ones understandable since she was a little brat when she was a child and Zuko left when he was 13). The more people she lost in her life, the more it pushed her to her father who didn't really love anyone. The only thing she had left to lose was her mind I guess. Irohs whole point was that people deserve second chances (as seen with his discussion with Jet on the ferry to Ba Sing Se) but not only did Azula have no desire to repent, she had no reason as well. And even if she did suddenly have a reason, she had no one to turn to and nowhere to go.
@@ashaclark9465 ok,this,I agree with. Although about Iroh,I doubt even he got a chance to positively influence Azula. Ozai's weapon and heir will probably not be allowed to spend time with her uncle.
I love how you edited this to demonstrate the many parallels and legacies passed down throughout the Fire Nation royal family -- in a family that values prodigies, it takes losing everything (for Iroh, it's his son. For Azula, it's her absolute control) for them to recognize the true nature of honor and power. And I love that you've shown Ozai's parenting and treatment towards Zuko most likely stemmed from his own childhood under Azulon. What I'm not so sure about is Ozai and Zuko having parallels in receiving their crowns; after all Zuko's coronation is under a very context from Ozai's. Still, it's fascinating that Ozai seizes power ruthlessly through undermining his family, while that tragic legacy forces Zuko to be pitted against Azula to bring about peace. This is just so thoughtfully done, there were some parts that gave me chills.
Thank you! For the coronation, my interest was more on how even though Iroh and Azula were the prodigies, they were focused on putting someone else on the throne: Azula supporting her father and Iroh supporting Zuko's claim
Well. They all have similar letters and letter pronounciations in their names. That could’ve substituted as a replacement for traditional last names Azulon->Ozai Ilah->Iroh Ozai->Zuko Azulon-Azula Zuko-Izumi Someone made a detailed comment as to why the family of Azulon has so many Zs and the family correlations behind the Zs. I suggest you find it.
SpetsnatzLegion 336 family names weren’t really a thing until napoleon, rich influential families had dynastic “house” names. Royal families typically don’t have last names as they have the prefix “prince”, “princess”, “king”, “queen”, etc. When asked about their name, Zuko could say prince Zuko, firstborn of firelord Ozai, or firelord Zuko, etc. Royals don’t need family names
I am assuming last names are a sign of wealth and status in the ATLA universe (the only last names I can think off the top of my head are Beifong and Sato, both wealthy and influential families). That being said, the members of the royal family (both Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom) and high ranking military officers are also of high status. But, their titles already show their status and importance. When it is Fire Lord Ozai, Prince Zuko, Earth King Kuei, Admiral Zhao etc. everyone knows who are they, their titles are enough explanation, they don’t need a last name to show their status.
Shows Sozin leaving Roku to die while Iroh speaks in background saying "The world would see it as just more senseless violence" I got chills. And also that "Not lose and come home crying" line and cutting to Azula crying was amazing.
Toph: my parents don’t really pay any attention to me... Katara: my mom is dead... Prince Zuko: my mother disappeared and my father exiled and banished me... Aang: y’all HAVE parents?!
I lowkey felt bad for Azula. I know she is a legit psychopath but her friends betrayed her and she lost her mind, and it’s really sad seeing her decline from a smart, talented, (evil) firebender to crying on the floor defeated.
Even a sociopath has within them an innate capacity for empathy, its just that it's significantly lessened than the average person's. If a sociopath is to be brought up in a household wherein their only parental figure, their primary authority figure, continually disdains human empathy and compassion as weakness, intending to groom that child into a child soldier, a weapon to kill without question, said child grows up to become more easily capable of committing murder.
Iroh: history would just see it as more senseless violence, a brother killing a brother to grab power Also Iroh: zuko, go fight your sister to grab power lol
General Iroh, though he is also of legitimate blood descent, could not successfully challenge Ozai for the throne; though he was the original heir apparent, Iroh had long since forsaken his claim to the throne, having ultimately recognized Ozai as the legitimate Fire Lord 5 years prior. Prince Zuko was positioned as his father's heir apparent prior to his own defection two months ago, and Azula had only just now been deemed Ozai's successor, thus Prince Zuko has a more legitimate basis through which he can contest Azula's ascension and accede the throne. TLDR; Political convenience's a bitch.
WOW! Just... WOW! I'm so glad that you accepted my suggestion and made this video. You are right, toward the end the video starts to feel more about the legacy of their family (nothing wrong with that, of course). I thought it was very good how you added Izumi there at the end. A really clever idea! But, what *AMAZED* me most, I think you truly managed to capture the parallels I was talking about between Azula and Iroh, and between Zuko and Ozai. I honestly thought that people would slip into that "pairing Zuko with Iroh and Azula with Ozai" mentality if it's one video, but you really managed to break that kind of thinking, especially with the first half of the video (Ozai kneeling before Azulon and Zuko kneeling before Ozai, Ozai being mistaken for Zuko in that picture of him as a baby, Ozai and Zuko burning down the Earth Kingdom, Azula and Iroh fighting to conquer Ba Sing Se, Azula and Iroh bending lightning, Azula and Iroh being praised as heroes of the Fire Nation, etc.) Anyway, I'm *BEYOND HAPPY* with how the video turned out. I now honestly can't decide which video I like better: this video or the one about the relationship between Azula and Zuko, but I'm fine with having two favorites. Especially when they are so well-edited as these two. Thank you also for mentioning me in the description. That probably boosted my ego more than it should have, but I feel really honored. I realize that you are somewhat upset with me since our last talk, but thank you so much for accepting my suggestion and making such an *INCREDIBLE* video out of it. I wish you the best of luck with all of your future projects! If they turn out half as well as this one, you'll know you did a bang-up job with them.
I'm so happy you like it ! As you see, I felt very inspired by it straight away, and put off the other things I was working on in order to complete this XD And I think you're reading way too much into my comments, I am really not upset at you, on the contrary! I love having friendly debates about my favourite shows !
I'm disappointed you didn't mention the parallel I'm the proudest of though :p "a real general would have stayed and burned Ba Sing Se to the ground, not lose the battle and come home crying." paralleled with Azula's breaking down and crying after being defeated. Both Iroh and Azula started off as the favourites and the strongest and are left completely broken and "crying" after a particularly hard defeat (Lu-Ten's death / Mai and Ty-Lee's betrayal as well as Ozai going off on his own), which completely metamorphoses them (Iroh loses any desire for war and becomes the wise man we all know and love / Azula loses her mind) and leads to them not receiving the title of Firelord.
I'm sorry about that! I did notice that parallel, but I wasn't really thinking when I was listing the parallels. Just named the few I noticed first I guess :( But that's definitely an *INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL* and *TRAGIC* parallel! I can't honestly decide which one I like the most (it will probably hit me which one I like the most sometime in the future). Currently, I'm just overwhelmed at how perfectly you managed to capture this great number of parallels between all of these wonderful characters. And yeah, I completely agree with you how both Azula's and Iroh's experiences in the war changed them and caused them immense heartbreak (though Azula's obviously also has a lot to do with her early childhood and the treatment she received from her parents her entire life). I also forgot to thank you for how quickly you made this video. I mean, when you said that it sometimes takes you up to a *YEAR* to finish a video, I thought "Wow, I'm really lucky then!" considering that I suggested this idea to you only *TWO WEEKS* ago. You are probably right about me reading too much into your comments, but I actually thought that comment-wise we left the conversation on a friendly note. The reason why I thought you were upset is because I saw you unpinned my comment on your "Azula & Zuko ● The Showdown Meant To Be" video. But I guess that's just me reading too much into little things.
Well, it doesn't take me a year to finish a video, it might take me a year to start it because I have a lot of other projects ;) Avatar projects do tend to go fast though, as I really know the show by heart. (And I had a lot of time on my hands these past weeks, which will not be the case this year, I hope I'll find some time to edit still) For the unpinned comment, the reason is simple : RUclips had put it in the spam section (probably because of its length, or maybe you linked something in it, I don't remember), so it wasn't available for a time, i noticed it and declared it was not a spam, but I didn't realise that putting it out again meant I aslo had to pinned it again ! :)
Oh, I didn't know that RUclips put comments in spam for being too long, thanks for informing me. It's probably because of the length since I didn't put any links in it. I guess I could shorten it a bit, perhaps erase the quotes in it since they are not really essential to what I was saying. Anyway, I'm glad to know that you didn't unpin it and that it was just a mistake because of RUclips. I just assumed that you were upset since it was unpinned pretty much at the same time we finished that conversation. I apologize for being presumptuous. I'm sad to hear you won't be as free as you were these past weeks, but like you, I hope you do find the time to edit, since your videos are a true blessing to the vidding community and the entire RUclips in general.
This is sad and amazing. Everything in this video is synced. This video is a basically the trailer or the summary of the entire Fire Nation Royal Family.
I really hope the live action show leans into what a goddamn nightmare this family is even more than the show did. Don't get me wrong the show killed it but I hope the live action improves on it Edit: considering we get to see Azula sabotaging Zuko's return home and Ozai using Zuko to manipulate Azula I'd say they succeeded
sure Azula did horrible stuff and was awful to her brother but she was 14! She was the product of her father basically training her to be a weapon, all she wanted was love and compassion from her mother but she never got it. she never got love from anyone, she was never taught how to love someone. Azula is one of my favorite characters, she’s a perfect “villain”
Thank you so much for this. Your work is always amazing! I'd love a tribute for Katara and Sokka, showing their strong relationship. But in the end, I'll be happy with whatever you make I'm sad to read that people have actually been extremely demanding with their request. If anyone is reading this just Google Sony vegas editing and you'll see its actually _a lot_ of work for the editor
I'm so GLAD you said that ! A tribute about Katara and Sokka is definitely gonna happen, as I think their relationship is HUGELY underrated ! In fact, I wanted to do it straight after the Zuko and Azula one, to contrast a toxic sibling relationship with a healthy one, but I felt more inspired with other stuff instead. But this one is coming, make no mistake about it ! (And I just had ONE person being a bit insistant, so it's no big deal, but I thought I'd lay down the rules here just to be clear ;) And that actually encourages people to make suggestions in the end, which is a good thing !)
WOW!!! OMG!!! Do you know how much I love your videos on "A:TLA" and the Royal Family? It was awesome! Epic and touching!!! This music, these voiceovers and these parallels between all the members of the royal family. Especially I liked the parallel between Iroh and Azula. Perfectly! I'm just in love with this masterpiece! Thank you!
Thank you very much ! (Although, to give credit where it's due, I'm not the one making the colourings, I use pre-existing colourings made by others ;) )
Iroh could only care for Zuko because Ozai had no interest in him. If Iroh had tried to mentor Azula, Ozai would have shut him down. This is also probably why Ursa wasn't able to nurture Azula.

That . Was . Great! Funnily enoughI was wondering, if one day this music piece would make it into one of your videos - The Sad Mafioso is just so perfect for these kind of videos. Keep it up! You've made a video about the fire nation and one about the air nomad genocide - so maybe you have something planned, or at least an idea, for videos about the water tribe and earth kingdom? The water tribe could be about the differences of the north and south, and how they faced the fire nations, while the earth kingdom could be about the denial of war inside Ba Sing Se compared to the reality outside the city? Just an idea though - I'll watch whatever comes :P
Thank you ! if you know other musics as cool as this one, I'm interested ! For the water tribe thing, I have a waterbending video planned that will probably tackle the tribes a bit, but this one is not my priority right now ! ;)
Hmm, if you want something similar like this, I'd say, you should just listen to different Pust-Rock instrumentals - they have a similar style but of course different tones. One music piece that might work well with a video like this, although its different than The Sad Mafioso and a different genre entirely, is "The Way" by Zack Hemsey - or basically anything by him :P I really have to say, I like your music choices - especially Old Yellow Bricks, since Arctic Monkeys is one of my favorite bands!
Thank you ! I already know Zack Hemsey, but I promised myself never to use "the way", as it is one of the most overused things in the vidding community imo XD

@@someone23ful
Because the character's backstory still isn't fully-fleshed out, in other words we know nothing about his past/upbringing, I seriously don't think it's fair to assume that.
"If only I could've helped you."
"Help me!"
... omg chills
What the hell I had chills at that moment too
This was amazing. As a kid I didn't really pick up on how complicated the royal family was. Watching makes me realize how broken and disconnected this family is.
It started as simply story. It ended up as such a dark masterpiece
I can’t believe I never connected that when Zuko cut his hair, it was the first step to his character growth and redemption. When Azula cut her hair, it was her losing herself, the start of her downfall omg this show never fails to amaze me
This is incredible
I LOVED IROH/AZULA PARALLELS
What a man. ♥
Oohh the parallel of zuko cutting his hair next to azula chopping hers out of madness is amazing
I wished they made a series about Uncle Iroh's life. From being the eldest son of Firelord Azulon to the day he lost his son.
In the comics it gets worse😬😰
Azula did have a soul, albeit it was very broken and was probably buried deep inside the moment she started to firebend.
I like that a lot of this is on Azula and Iroh parallels. Never realized how similar they are
I love how you edited this to demonstrate the many parallels and legacies passed down throughout the Fire Nation royal family -- in a family that values prodigies, it takes losing everything (for Iroh, it's his son.
All this talk of family, but nobody apparently has a last name apart from the Beifongs.
fr i thought i was the only one who noticed that
Well. They all have similar letters and letter pronounciations in their names. That could’ve substituted as a replacement for traditional last names
Azulon->Ozai
Ilah->Iroh
Ozai->Zuko
Azulon-Azula
Zuko-Izumi
Someone made a detailed comment as to why the family of Azulon has so many Zs and the family correlations behind the Zs.
Royal families in the real world don't have last names, just look at prince Harry and William
Shows Sozin leaving Roku to die while Iroh speaks in background saying "The world would see it as just more senseless violence" I got chills. And also that "Not lose and come home crying" line and cutting to Azula crying was amazing.
Thank you!
@@MellanClear Your welcome keep doing what your doing and I hope you can achieve your dreams. 😊

Katara: my mom is dead...

This video was so intense... It really highlights the problems this family has had. And then ending it on that line and Izumi... absolutely brilliant!
I love how when iroh says to grab power it shows a pic of Azula
“Avatar: The Last Airbender is a kid’s show.”
Dave Filoni giggles in the background
It is, but had alot of potential to be a great more adult themed t.v show this video shows that potential
Izumi at the end couldn't have fit more perfectly...

I know I'm late but I just got to say that this is truly a goldmine
Thank you!
2:05
That scene hits different when you find out that the man is Iroh, with his son and Zuko.
Which one is zuko
@@mythic1617 The baby.
Iroh: history would just see it as more senseless violence, a brother killing a brother to grab power
Also Iroh: zuko, go fight your sister to grab power lol
he was scared of ozai lol
As you see, I felt very inspired by it straight away, and put off the other things I was working on in order to complete this XD
And I think you're reading way too much into my comments, I am really not upset at you, on the contrary! I love having friendly debates about my favourite shows !
I'm disappointed you didn't mention the parallel I'm the proudest of though :p
"a real general would have stayed and burned Ba Sing Se to the ground, not lose the battle and come home crying." paralleled with Azula's breaking down and crying after being defeated.
Just named the few I noticed first I guess :(
But that's definitely an *INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL* and *TRAGIC* parallel!
(And I had a lot of time on my hands these past weeks, which will not be the case this year, I hope I'll find some time to edit still)
For the unpinned comment, the reason is simple : RUclips had put it in the spam section (probably because of its length, or maybe you linked something in it, I don't remember), so it wasn't available for a time, i noticed it and declared it was not a spam, but I didn't realise that putting it out again meant I aslo had to pinned it again !

Wow. That Azula part at 1:09.

Whelp after this and the Zuko and Azula one I've subbed
Damn the whole thing about Iroh losing the battle and coming home crying... never noticed that
zuko's family is so complicated and interesting that this video really made my day :))
I really hope the live action show leans into what a goddamn nightmare this family is even more than the show did. Don't get me wrong the show killed it but I hope the live action improves on it
Edit: considering we get to see Azula sabotaging Zuko's return home and Ozai using Zuko to manipulate Azula I'd say they succeeded
sure Azula did horrible stuff and was awful to her brother but she was 14! She was the product of her father basically training her to be a weapon, all she wanted was love and compassion from her mother but she never got it. she never got love from anyone, she was never taught how to love someone. Azula is one of my favorite characters, she’s a perfect “villain”
I love Izumi sooo much
Thank you so much for this.
Your work is always amazing!
I'd love a tribute for Katara and Sokka, showing their strong relationship.
But in the end, I'll be happy with whatever you make
I'm sad to read that people have actually been extremely demanding with their request.
GSYBE excellent choice.

One thing this show left out was an interaction or moment between Iroh and Ozai
i wish we had more of izumi
Iroh made one mistake not caring for Azula too
Iroh could only care for Zuko because Ozai had no interest in him. If Iroh had tried to mentor Azula, Ozai would have shut him down. This is also probably why Ursa wasn't able to nurture Azula.
@@chooseyouhandle it’s so sad because her dad didn’t even treat her well. she was treated as a weapon and had no one and even the 2 she did trust (mai and ty lee) picked zuko instead of her. it’s sad because if she wasn’t alone her whole life she wouldn’t be in a psych ward

This is so well put together. It was truly an enjoyable experience thank you!
That . Was .
One music piece that might work well with a video like this, although its different than The Sad Mafioso and a different genre entirely, is "The Way" by Zack Hemsey - or basically anything by him :P
I really have to say, I like your music choices - especially Old Yellow Bricks, since Arctic Monkeys is one of my favorite bands!
Thank you ! I already know Zack Hemsey, but I promised myself never to use "the way", as it is one of the most overused things in the vidding community imo XD
Knowing how Izumi and Iroh II are nice, it is implied they never meet Azula because can you imagine if Izumi becomes Azula 2.0? It's also really ironic of how Zuko, coming from the messed up family ever is the one who has better parenting on his child (Katara also doing well with her children).
