  • My wife's Expedition began having a loud noise while running. Come to find out it was a rocker arm that flattened it self on the camshaft. So I rebuilt the engine with new bearing, pistons rings, gasket kit, new rockers and cam. I had a machine shop check, clean and install everything in the head. I then reinstalled the engine, which has 190 compression across the board and purrs like a kitten.

I know this was done a year ago, but I wanted to say great job. A couple suggestions, whenever you do timing on a 3V use the Melling MV340HV oil pump, it'll greatly extend the life of the engine. Oil starvation on the passenger head from the rear plate on the factory oil pump warping and tensioner seals are what does these engines in. The MV340HV fixes the oil starvation issue, the updated tensioners fix the other. There's also an updated phaser that fixes the Phaser knock issue also.

Thanks for the info! After a year with the rebuild and 15-20k miles and it’s still running great! If I rebuild another 5.4 I’ll grab a Melling oil pump! Thanks for the support!!

@@TheShopWorldWide Great news. I currently have my 3v in pieces in my shop doing a freshening up after 273k miles. They had their issues, but if you took care of the 4 problem areas and keep up on oil changes and maintenance, they just go forever. Oil pump, roller followers, tensioners, and phasers were the big issues. All have updated designs. Happy wrenching.

Did you reuse the timing chain tensioners? The factory Ford tensioner gaskets are the main failure item in this engine. Go cast iron ratcheting from an older 4.6 / 5.4 2 valve. No gasket to fail and direct bolt in.

I did reuse all the timing components. The issue I had was a rocker failed and started to flatten the cam. I also had an exhaust leak from the manifold having a loose bolt.
