“Idk how else to explain it…. This book fkn sucks” hahaha after this book came out I heard so many bad reviews and people being like wait… I thought this was supposed to be good
Ohh...A lot of books on your list are books that I want to read. My husband just picked up Pachinko from a little free library, I also liked Dragon Pearl a lot and was hoping to read Tiger Honor soon and to enjoy it as much as I liked the first book, I put Once Upon a K-Prom on my TBR and now I might take it off because I feel weird about fanfiction about real people. I also literally just finished Dial A For Aunties last night and loved the chaos of it and now I'm so scared because I did immediately borrow the second book from my library
YES I’m here for the criticism. Portrait of a thief was a highly anticipated book of mine, but I decided not to read it because your initial review convinced me I would hate it. Here are my worst reads of the year (although I have to say it *was* a great reading year for me): She who became the sun: omg so boring Beach read: omg sooooo boring, and the americana was decidedly not for me. This is how you lose the time war: oh god I hated the letter format, the narration, the lyrical style, the yearning, the characters, all of it. The romance recipe: I hated both mcs, especially together, I hated the Montreal rep (ahem, get the poutine facts right pls). Wishing you a better year in books for 2023!!!
omg she who became the sun was my most disappointed in 2021 😭 and LOL the fact that i read the romance recipe and did not even realize it took place in montreal?? 🤡
@@tammietriestoread It didn't take place in montreal but the chef character is from montreal... and poutine is a big deal for her, it's a whole thing. Also I'm sorry but if one of the characters is french-canadian... please find a narrator who can pronounce the french words correctly. Omg just thinking about that book again is making me shudder. To think that it was my last book of 2022 and that it was a literal one-star read. LOL
Worst Book of 2022: The Cloisters by Katy Hays Most Disappointing Book of 2022: The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake or Fire Becomes Her by Rosiee Thor I fully understand your thoughts and feelings on "No Longer Human" adapted by Junji Ito. I read it in August but never read the original book. I definitely agree on how the horror elements made the mange even more misogynistic than it should be. Even though I loved "Ace of Spades" (read in 2021), I understand why it might be for you. I am so glad that I dnf'd "Portrait of a Thief" in April. Clearly I didn't miss much. The writing was the main issue for me at the time (dnf'd at page 60). I dnf'd Pachinko in May and I am not sure if I would want to try again with. There was something that happened that disturbed me to my core at the end of chapter 5, and I have been hesitant to come back to it ever since. I saw a lot of hype for "Lonely Castle in the Mirror," but hearing your thoughts makes me want to come into it with lower expectations. I am on the fence for reading "The Secret History," especially since it is widely beloved in the book community in particular the dark academia fans.
oof i DNF's the atlas six in 2021 so i definitely agree with that one! very curious about the cloisters because i have that one on audio but many people have given it a negative review now and i'm not so sure anymore 😅 i am glad you DNF'd portrait of a thief too! truly such a smart decision
I’m so here for all your Justice of Kings ranting. Helena is the WORST. The insta-love was the worst. The murder mystery was so underdeveloped. And the supposed themes about nuanced justice and moral ambiguity did not live up to my expectations at all. I’m still annoyed by the courtroom scene I was promised being basically one paragraph. And that Vonvalt is supposed to be the one who goes around and administers justice but then for some reason has to leave the case up to random jurors. What is even the point of him then?
Also I enjoyed Liar’s Knot but only after I put it down once and came back to it ready for the ultra slow pacing. I also think they bit off too much with the worldbuilding. Kind of felt like two authors having a great time in a playground of their own making, which is great for them but makes for a less tight story.
and i totally agree that the authors clearly really love their project - i think that was obvious even from mask of mirrors that it was a passion project and wasn't trying to have mass appeal, and i loved it! but i think the liar's knot for me just went a little too far into aimlessness territory
Portrait of a Thief suckkeeeedd. Who the heck plans a heist over zoom with the research being watching the Fast and Furious films and then the heist isn't even shown on page?!?!
if traditional publishing let curtis write her hilary clinton fanfic i doubt they would give any scrutiny to publishing thinly veiled fanfic of kpop idols in the future.
Both Lonely Castle and Namiya Store are my favourite reads of 2021 😂 sorry it doesn't work for you. I found the TV adaptation of Pachinko is much stronger than the book, hope you get to watch it soon!
not a spin off tv sequel lmaooooo
I haven't read any of them but enjoyed your rants about them. :)
thank you so much for watching!! 🥰
The Disney channel comparisons are killing me 🤭
“Idk how else to explain it…. This book fkn sucks” hahaha after this book came out I heard so many bad reviews and people being like wait… I thought this was supposed to be good
Yeah Ace of Spades was a confusing time and I felt very bAmboozled by this book
Hope you’re feeling better friend 💖
i needed to see these bad reviews cos i think the only people i know who don't like it were me, aaron, and lena 😭 so much bamboozlement going on
i am much better now, thank you friend!!
LMAO even the middle grade books didn’t stand a chance against your scrutiny. I love the ruthlessness 😂😂
Not you feeling bamboozled by the adult SFF community. I’m laughing so hard right now
I think I’ll definitely read Dial A for Aunties because it sounds fun but will take your red and will def skip the sequel
the children deserve good books too!
the adult SFF community and i do not think the same way i fear 😩

please don't let me put you off these books if you are interested! reading is really such a subjective experience and you may enjoy them!
I’m here for the tea 🍵
Oh man infantilization of women is a triggerrrrr for me so imma comfortably avoid Justice of Kings
it was just very much giving the vibe of men who think that women are silly and live for male attention and i just hated it so much
I am too scared to read Four Aunties and a Wedding because I loved Dial A for Aunties so so much! It was so charming and funny.
it was!! i was so disappointed but i do hope you like it more if you end up picking it up!

omg the courtroom scene was SO short-lived!!
and i totally agree that the authors clearly really love their project - i think that was obvious even from mask of mirrors that it was a passion project and wasn't trying to have mass appeal, and i loved it! but i think the liar's knot for me just went a little too far into aimlessness territory
starting the year on a sour note lolllll 🤣🤣🤣
gotta get the negativity out of the way! 😂
Portrait of a Thief suckkeeeedd. Who the heck plans a heist over zoom with the research being watching the Fast and Furious films and then the heist isn't even shown on page?!?!
it was honestly an insult to fast and furious tbh 😩
not you and me agreeing on pachinko.
if traditional publishing let curtis write her hilary clinton fanfic i doubt they would give any scrutiny to publishing thinly veiled fanfic of kpop idols in the future.
LOL idk how i somehow missed that this book exists but yikesssss
Oof coming for Liars Knot like that 😅
look away angela!!!
it makes us so happy to see u hate on a secret history
LOLL it had to be done

i'm so glad you loved both!! and it's good to hear that the TV adaptation was better, i'm more excited to check it out now!
Finally someone else who didn’t like Pachinko!
i didn't dislike it per se, just wasn't the 5 star read that i was expecting!
2022 really wasn’t a good reading year for so many of us 😭
lonely castle in the sky 😭 i am nervous to read that one
still so sad for you about the liars knot 😔
i forgot you read twisted love 😂

Hi bb!! First!! 💜💜
To make a book published during the 1950s even more misogynistic in 2017 is truly impressive 😬
ngl I have trust issues when it comes to the adult SFF community
i've been burned so many times by the adult SFF community lol
