Hi Matt. In relation to the stirrup used to hold the post, with the gap between the stirrup and the post, wouldn't the screws attaching the post to the stirrup be taking all the weight? Wouldn't it be better to have the posts bottom directly in contact with the stirrup to ensure the weight isn't being held by only the screws/bolts? Are you able to have a video on actually buidling a deck from start to finish as your video's are really informative. Cheers!

Yes, the bolts take the weight of the post. As well as the compressive action of the stirrup sides being clamped the the post by the bolts. If you look at the bolt holes in the stirrup you will see that the holes do not line up vertically, they are slightly offset. This is so the bolts do not sit in the same section of vertical grain of the post, and add to the carrying capacity. If the post sits straight on the stirrup base you are only relying on two small welds holding the base in which are not as strong as the bolts. Also as soon as you get any rot from moisture sitting at the base, the post would no longer be bearing on the base anyway. Best to keep it clear.
I am glad you are enjoying the videos, unfortunately I don't get a lot of time to make them as I teach full time now. I will try to do one one deck construction for you.

@@mattthechippietrainer thanks for that. What type of bolts or screws would you use with the stirrup?

@@ginarhodes7907 Hex head bolts are most commonly used for stirrups. The size will depend on the load it is carrying.

@@ginarhodes7907 it would depend on where you are building and what class of construction it is. The National construction code (Building Code of Australia) will direct you to which Australian Standard is appropriate. You can access it for free on line.

Hi Matt, in regards to timber posts in ground can you in theory, wrap the bottom of the timber post with 0.2mm polyethylene construction plastic up to NGL will this avoid rot?

    • @mattthechippietrainer

That would provide a certain amount of protection but there is still the opportunity for moisture to get between the plastic and the post. Painting the bottom of the post with a thick layer of bitumastic waterproofing paint would be a better option than plastic. But the stirrup is the best option and also make the post easier to replace if the need arises.
