- Building a Smart Mirror is easy...IF you know how. Learn about the best glass to use, how to frame it, and how to add touchscreen technology. A Smart Mirror works by placing a transparent mirror in front of a display. It's important to use the best mirror and display possible for maximum clarity, so you'll want to use a mirror specifically designed for Smart Mirrors. You can use any brand and model of monitor, tablet, or TV you like.

// FRAMING //
Simply use a shadowbox frame. Here's how it all fits together. The frame is in the front, which holds the glass and touchscreen in place. The shadowbox is deep, which hides the sides of your display.
// CHOOSING YOUR MIRROR //
To achieve great picture quality, you'll need a Smart Mirror or Dielectric Mirror. The Smart Mirror is available in both glass and acrylic, both offer great reflection and transparency. In large sizes, such as 40" and above, I recommend choosing the glass to make sure your reflection is perfectly flat. We also offer tempering in case you need your glass to be extra sturdy.

Avoid the two way mirror film at all costs, because its blurry and bubbles over time.
Final step! Once you've added your display, simply plug in a Raspberry Pi, Android, or Windows PC and you're done.

Beyond haters and people who lack respect for those who make such contributions at no cost, I want to thank you for the information.
You're welcome & thank you! 😁💗
yes because this channel is not monetized like all the others. People criticize when something is wrong. It's perfectly normal. And in this video a lot was wrong. it's not all sunshines and rainbows.
I bet $10 if you ask her with is her Ethernet password is she will give you the Wireless password. I love on the left its a monitor and on our right is a mirror.
@@KewaiiGamer yeah this guy was definitely simping
I got two really great tips here that no other youtube video mentioned.
This is the first time I watch a Do It Yourself video without anyone actually doing something.

Idk why everybody's being mean. It's a small channel (sub quarter mil, so... "small?") and she tried to put some extra effort into it for us. If you don't like it, by all means, disclose it, but at least be constructive about it. I don't see anyone else here - myself included - making any content. It's easy to be a jerk on the internet because it's impersonal, but you had ought to still at least keep some level of professionalism. You're still talking to real people.
While I personally didn't enjoy the excess of energy and effort on the hostess' side, I appreciate the effort that she took to produce something she felt was good enough for us to consume and I hope that she keeps making videos, grows her channel to keep providing us with cool shit too watch, and, uh, adjusts her energy levels a bit :P
Nolan, thank you! It is pretty crazy the amount of comments but I have noticed that in my newest video that I star in, I did not receive the same feedback. 😆 I do try to take every comment as constructively as possible *when* possible. ---Krista
I managed 39 seconds and by the third ‘jazz hands’ had to pause to read the comments to see if it was only me.
It wasn’t.
Yeah same here

Take the over-acting a notch down or two please. Being really honest here.
Also, try to hide clocks or any other objects in your surroundings that would give away the amount of time you spent re-doing clips or taking breaks.
@@AJ-mw4nb Woah, good thinking! Thank you for taking the time to point that out - next time I'll do it in one take 😆😊

I had to watch this twice because of you! First watch, once I noticed your Jazzy hands I couldn't stop not looking, it actually took all my attention from words and into trying to decipher your sign language. Mariah Carey would be proud! Great video btw
Glad you enjoyed it! (:
The mirrors are looking great. Presentation is way to overhyped, turn it down a notch or two. It is a cool mirror not a rocketship
Thanks for the feedback!
*too overhyped... An expert on presentation, such as yourself, surely understands how much spelling matters.
It’s basically a “rocket ship” to people who are just getting into writing software and electronic engineering projects like this ;)
I enjoy the presentation! This is very helpful for designing a mirror like this.
I had no problem with the way it was presented. The editing could have clipped out the pauses a little more, but I was able to learn what I needed from this
I think you did a decent job, I didn't mind the over jumping and over expression but it was noticeable throughout. I think overall you did an okay job of presenting what you intended choosing a frame, the type of glass you recommend, and then how to get a software. I don't know why people are leaving the comments they are but I appreciated this small video you made.
Thank you for the feedback! It is a super interesting phenomenon... the haters like to comment on RUclips and the people that like it tend to call me and order. 😜
Two Way Mirrors haters gonna hate lol meanwhile you’re laughing to the bank
This level of “DIY” equates to buying a pre assembled kit off of amazon.

@@twowaymirrors Do you have any preassembled products? Def going to build my own, but it's a good option to ask if you have anything pre-assembled I could check out.
i mean, duh.
Gosh!!! Never found any video this difficult to watch. Honestly!!
Thank you for your feedback!
Cool video. Thanks for outlining some of the basic material choices we'd need to get started! Not sure why everyone is freaking out about your performance. While the energy and movement was noticeable, I still learned what I was looking for and made it to the end of the video. Being on camera is weird, and It's nearly impossible to be direct and chill while also being enthusiastic. Can't ever please everyone! Keep up the hard work!
Connor, thank you! :) The comments did allow me to succeed with future videos. I think the target audience is just quite sensitive to enthusiasm. 😆
I struggled to watch this, actually skipped through it... over the top arm gesticulations and false excitement were cringy...
Thank you for your feedback! I will work on my gesticulations!
A bunch of comments in here about your presentation, but you provide a lot of precise and detailed advice for how to go about this. It's been hard for me to find actual details on specifically what to get for doing something like this, so thanks!
Thank you, glad you found the smart mirror information useful!

what would be a good mirror to have a camera shoot through? (for a photo booth)
I highly recommend the Dielectric Mirror - it is the latest and greatest in terms of giving you the absolute best display quality while also having a really great reflection. For more info and pricing, check out the link: www.twowaymirrors.com/tvmirror/
Would you also include the installation and operation of the IR touch screen?
What were the settings on the raspberry Pi to accommodate the touchscreen?
Great question! We are currently building some new Glass Smart Mirror systems right now :) As soon as I have them in hand to check the settings I definitely will publish it to the website & comment here!
Hey glad I found your video, just what I was looking for - subd
Thank you, glad you found us!
can we use any another system which is compatible with IOS
and i want to use 55 inch tv display
whole display and all other unit has to be thin and all the electronics will be in separate box with speaker inbuilt and connected with single wire
Yes, works great--you'd simply need the mirror to hide the 55" TV.
The info was helpful so thanks for that! Personally I did felt the presentation was distracting, but I know its very difficult to find the balance between gestures, tone of voice and enthusiasm. Maybe trying to forget the camera and imagine you're just talking to one of your family members or your best friend will result in presentations that got that natural feel. Just try to be yourself as natural as posible and the final result will be just great. Thanks for your effort!
Nathan,
Thank you for your feedback and suggestions! I actually did practice with this and am happy with the results. I can't wait to share my newest video. It should be up later today!

Hi. What is my best option to display videos, and notifications for a big smart mirror. I was thinking of acrylic but I need one that will look exactly like a normal mirror. Thanks!
The Glass Smart Mirror is the best match to a standard mirror and it will look great when displaying full color animations and notifications. 😊
uh nice complete guy, that helped me to have my mirror builded while watching, i actually did it! Thanks alot for showing "how to" !
Thanks! So glad to be of help with your Smart Mirror project!
So I built one kit and thought it was fun. I like how you focused on clarifying on the actual mirror portion of the project instead of the tech aspect which is everybody else's take. I know for me acrylic with film. It really made the results ....meh ...at best. I'm dusting off the project to play against.. good info. Good stuff. Thanks.
Don't let the trolls get to you. Just keep swinging, you'll find your stride.
Most of these neck beards would be too petrified to try to talk to you irl. I doubt they spend much time infront of mirrors anyways. Take it easy folks, kindness don't cost a thing.
I super appreciate that! Every project is different so we felt we had to make a video to help people out. We can put them together too but imagine the video editing process... to make it look good it would take 30+ man hours. 😅
i'm not sure i would call this a complete guide, but definitely a nice tips/advice video
Thanks for the feedback! The rest of the details are in our downloadable PDF and website.
I can't wait to make my mirror. I'll use it as the front of my pc case.
I'll go with tissue instead of painting the back of the mirror, so If I want a bigger or smaller screen later it'll be easier to change :)
Thank you.
That's true, you could just use vinyl film--easier to replace later! Hopefully the heat from the PC won't cause bubbling
I have a Elo 22 inch touchscreen monitor, model ET2201L.
What would you recommend I use for the mirror?
Great question! I looked at the specs and I"m not sure it will work with a mirror over it because it already has a glass screen. I recommend trying it with one of our 3mm smart mirror samples: www.twowaymirrors.com/product-samples/
So not everyone in RUclips are complete professionals, the content of this video has really helped me and she gave great advice on building a smart mirror, the hate this woman is getting over this video is comical, and justifying insults by saying it’s ‘constructive criticism,’ granted some comments did have the intention to be helpful others were just plain cruel. Keep making these awesome videos gal 💖
Thank you! :) I'm glad the video was helpful && I super appreciate you. 😊😊
Can I use a television instead of a computer monitor? Its an old 40in HD TV i have no real use for at the moment. And is there a wrong mirror to buy??? I went out to Lowes to buy one and the first thing i notice when I get home is it is completely opaque on the back. What do I do?
Yes, TVs work great! Provided they have an HDMI connection you can use a Pi or Windows PC. Standard mirrors won't work, only transparent mirrors (more info is available on twowaymirrors.com)
How do I incorporate a touch screen? Is that the IR remote thingy you talk about? Or do I purchase a touch screen over lay. Or is the touch screen overlay the IR part you mention. When assembled would it be DIELECTRIC GLASS-TOUCH SCREEN/IR - DISPLAY?
Could I use a large touch screen monitor then put the dielectric glad in front of it? I'm so close to putting all together in my head, those are the only things left to complete. Thank you so much in advance!
I know, it can be a lot to take in! You'll need a monitor/tv/display, a dielectric mirror (or smart mirror) and IR Touch Overlay to add touch capability to a diy smart mirror project. Then you'll need a frame to hold those three things together. The frame will be the closest layer, then the IR frame, then the glass, then the tv/display will be the last layer furthest away from the front. Check out the article guide I wrote for more details: www.twowaymirrors.com/diy-smart-mirror/
@Bus 22 THANK YOU SO MUCH BUSSSSS! Awesome! I just have to figure out how big I want to go! Thanks again!
You are totally right! You definitely do not want to start out with a touch screen because the mirror will make it not work anymore. That is why you need a screen with no touch like a computer monitor or TV, then add the touch by using an IR Touch Overlay. Less commonly... people will use a tablet because they are up-cycling it - just note that once it is behind the mirror you cannot interact with it via touch.
The terms I used in the video were "IR Touch Overlay" and "Touch Overlay" - both talking about the same thing. You may also need an IR Repeater if you are using a TV (which relocates the eye of the TV) to allow the remote to work through the mirror. This would only be needed if you are framing it right to the screen or are covering the sensor with paint.
In my country there is no availability of any two way mirror or dielectric mirror. but the two way mirror films are available. i think that they should not be much bad for the project. should i consider taking it?
The film isn't ideal, but it will get the job done if you have a piece of clear glass and don't have the budget for a real smart mirror at www.twowaymirrors.com/smart-mirror/
Damn. The editing is killing me. Its so hard to watch toward the end
Heard! I am checking out Peter McKinnon's video for pro tips on editing up future videos (: ruclips.net/video/KnWhWVarfqM/видео.html
How the fuck could you watch it to the end
Does anyone now how to get toch screen on a large mirror ? Or can I use a large mirror then behind it the small IR frame then then the display ? I would like to make a body size mirror but a with a small portion touch screen/display
I would recommend using PCAP foil! With the touch foil, you can use any size screen and mirror that you desire and the touch aspect would only be where you applied the foil. Here's a direct link to our DIY Smart Mirror webpage!

This is awesome and I have always wanted to add touch functionality to a TV! Already knowing python is a bonus.
Thanks! Now if only I knew python instead of falconry....
Thanks for the information. Can you please tell me if the dielectric mirror works if put behind a sheet of regular glass?
Unfortunately. you can not place glass against glass.
Hi great informative video, I'm considering building a new pc desk with a in built screen (ipad size) that I want my phone to sync to when I put it on charge on the desk is this doable with this smart mirror concept?
Yes! You can place a frame around the iPad with the smart mirror glass.
I love the background on the larger screen behind you! It reminds me of Dillinger’s desk from Tron Legacy, one of my favorite movies.
Thank you! It is a great movie!
Does anyone know if using a capacative touch screen panel would work instead of the IR frame ( I don't like to protruding look )? If so, where could I get one?
Aiden,
The touch screen would work through the mirror in that case. Most regular touch screens you find online are not capacitive though. Proceed with caution!
@@twowaymirrors Where could I get a capacitive touch screen panel?
I would like to know what monitor & what software was going on behind her during this video. Anyone know? I would love to have a smart mirror that size.
It's simply Rainmeter in Windows
Hey thanks for the video... I'm doing my research to do this but I cant find a great big 23 to 27 inch touch screen ... what brand are you measuring in this video at 1:40 seconds? 🤣 or is that a tv?
Actually you use a regular TV and then add the touch to it by using an IR Touch Overlay. I hope that helps!! 😀👍
The 2 way acrylic vs 2 way smart glass. What's the difference. Wish you could go alittle more in-depth because the only difference I can tell is the price☹️
Great question! The acrylic is light weight and shatterproof but is easily scratched, while the glass is scratch resistant and flat even in larger sizes.
I have been looking everywhere for a way have the screen layout like what is on the big smart mirror behind you. Where can I find that or how would I go about setting that up?
Here you go! www.rainmeter.net/
Would you post the link to the 1 line of code for the top 5 widgets you’re referencing.

The Smart Mirror widgets can be installed using the code from magicmirror.builders/
. I have done the basics with the pi and magic mirror. I got the time / weather set. How do you adjust for local news ? After you have the basic, how do you add / personal modules.? I have not been able to find directions or any good how to on youtube to make the changes. May be you could do a video/ a step by step to add modules and adjust the news for your local area.

Sounds like you've got the basics of configuring a Smart Mirror down. You just need to type in a few lines of code and set your config file to your location. Hola...¡! Al hacer este proyecto no se calienta mucho el monitor o tv que va atras del cristal..?
It doesn't get that hot, LED TVs run pretty cool
This was the hardest video I have ever watched, but thank you for the tips!
Thanks! In the smart mirror video 2.0 it will be a lot easier!
did you spell tips wrong?
Hello I am very interested in making a smart mirror and using your services that you offer for the frame but my question is what is the IR touch overlay? Can I use any TV and make it touch screen?? I was looking to make a bigger display.
A touch overlay can be found by searching IR multitouch frame. Yes, you can add it to any size.
I'm not sure if I just witnessed the least natural presentation by a person ever caught on video or the most natural performance by an android ever caught on video.
The most natural, I prefer to be a cyborg
If the monitor is smaller than the glass and the IR fame, does the touch screen feature still work? Does the monitor has to be the same size as the IR frame?
Great question! You can simply calibrate it within Windows. So yes, it can be larger than the screen.
@@twowaymirrors How do you calibrate it within windows?
And what if I need film, because I have a complex, bended shape? Which film is good to go with?
Feel free to send us an email at sales@twowaymirrors.com so we can explore the possibilities! :)
What modules do you have running on the big one in the background? Those look cool.
Thanks! They are widgets in Rainmeter (Windows 10)
What do you think about using the raspberry pi 4 compared to the 3b+? Also is there a link for the acrylic pane? I would prefer to have a more clear display then the glass. The glass is clear but I believe you were right when showing how well the acrylic displayed the screen. And how much did everything cost to make your set up? Also I see everyone being kind of negative to you, but I think it was a good video! I appreciate how in depth you were! If I could offer some advice it would be to try and record the display through the glass and the acrylic straight on instead of at an angle, I just saw a lot of stuff that was kinda in the way of the display. Other than that it was a good video
Thanks! Yes, I would definitely recommend the Pi 4 instead of the 3b+. I'm planning a video on configuring it soon!
I am wondering if you could build a smart mirror in arduino and if not how do you intergrate alexia or google home to raspberry pi
Yes, you can definitely build an arduino smart mirror

Hi! If I use a dielectric mirror, do you know if I'm able to have the mirror larger than the monitor? I'd like a full length mirror (like this imgur.com/a/KQo94E4) but obviously the monitor wouldn't be that size. Can I paint the back of the dielectric mirror black?
Exactly! You just paint it black. I use UltraCover 2x black spray paint. Most of our clients use the Smart Mirror instead of the vanity because it hides the TV /monitor better.
What is the weather widget on 29sec of video please? Is it for Rapsberry?
Great question! It's just a rainmeter widget in Windows 10
you should also show the effect with the monitor off, to see how it looks like a mirror
Right! I wish I had thought of that when I made it, would have been cool--thankfully the mirror looks the same as it does on, but the text disappears.

Where did you get your wallpaper? Could you give me the link please? I really like your wallpaper and it looks so futuristic!
Thank you! We used Rainmeter, which is from www.rainmeter.net/
Is it raining outside? Oh no wait its in your whole video 😂☔
Yep! It was raining cats and dogs
Love it
Thank you

Thanks so much! Hope you guys are having an amazing year!
Great video, very informative. Please be still...
I can't, I'm just too excited about smart mirrors!
How can i get the ir touch screen
We recommend getting the IR Touch Overlay on Amazon - Greentouch is great and very inexpensive.
Thanks for the info christa...great energy but you can turning it down a little bit..and also try to make your recording smooth and continuous without too much cuts..I'm sure you can do that and you will get better with time.otherwise great info
Thank you
Thanks! I didn't have time to perfect the smart mirror video, as it was recorded and edited in a couple hours. Here's the complete info on Smart Mirrors! www.twowaymirrors.com/smart-mirror/
Hello Christa, My question is should the monitor be a touchscreen ?
Hey there! I recommend starting out with a TV or monitor that is not a touchscreen. When you put the mirror in front it will not allow the touch to work through the mirror. To add touch technology to your smart mirror, you need an IR touch or Touch foil.
Informative
Thanks! I aim to inform!
Don't take all those negative comments too personally and get discouraged by them. Just take care of those tips in the next video :). Overall the video is really knowledgeable and can't wait for your next project video!! Good luck!
Thank you!~ :) ♥
Two way mirror film comes in different transparencies. I have no idea why you would say 5% when you can roll all the way up to 40 on reflective glaze like i have on my house...for 17yrs, extreme heat and cold... No bubbles. Imagine that. Please give accurate information.
Agreed, the only problem is...the more transparency you have, the less mirrorlike it is. Most of the smart mirrors that use film that transparent look bad compared to the real deal: the smart mirror glass
Imagine home assistant on this, controlling your blinds and lights with touch enabled smart mirror
I love the idea of using a Smart Mirror for home automation!
Where is the best place buy two way glass 12x24 inch
Good videos
We offer the smart mirror glass on our website at www.twowaymirrors.com/smart-mirror/ Hope that helps!
Wow... You are so great.
Thank you so much 😀

Криста красавец!!! Пусть с большим опозданием смотрим ролик .. но Криста и впрямь прикольно предоставляет нам всем ту необходимую информацию ..))) Переводчик жалко подтраивает ..))))
Thanks so much! I love how this translates to "Krista is handsome"
Взаимно! Но немножко иначе переводится ..)))) Переводчик просто буксует ..)))
