Rebuilding My 26 Year Old Vans Engine While I Wait Out The Bad Weather

- This is my first video of 2023, I picked up a cold over Christmas and the weather was really bad so I used the time to get my old van back up and running. it now has a rebuilt engine in it and hopefully ready to do some more hard work for a few more years.
Kris I'm 70 years old and have built 3 homes over the years and maintained our vehicles without the need to have a shop do the work.
With that being said I just wanted to say that after watching your channel I'm in awe of how much you know about so many different things . You sir are one of the hardest working talented people I've ever known in my life. If more young folks had your additude this world would be a much better place to live. You are an amazing individual and a very humble young man that most likely will continue to Excell at all the things you do. I'm really looking forward for the series of videos on the new barn build. God bless, stay safe and we hope you have a very prosperous and happy new year.
Thanks William, that was a lovely comment. much appreciated. Happy new year to you to.
I agree with William thanks Kris
Well said. Kris is not deterred by the occasional knocks either.
💯 Couldn't have said it better myself :)
Ditto on everything William just said.. ❤️
I am still an untidy worker at 81 years I was told off when 16 by the Forman.so good luck with changing your habits 👍🤓
I'd just like to echo the sentiments i see in the comments: I learn so much from Your channel. Not so much on this video because car guy and i did do a couple of years mechanicing, but your normal build/renewable energy videos... They answer my questions, they answer questions i didn't even know were questions until i watched You do it, they give me inspirations, and they give me confidence that what i want is possible and that my way of working (overthinking everything) does have merit. This channel is one of the true gems of RUclips, and I link it to friends regularly. This coming from me, the original and world's worst/best toxic smart alec.
I think a lot of us watch you do about anything because you do it with such detail.
Well done on van repair
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
you are an amazing personne!
god bless you with a long and happy life🙏🏼 🙇🏻♂
Congratulations, Kris!
I enjoy watching you do most anything. I like building and gardening but I give up automotive work when I was 22, 40 years ago to flustrating for me
Kris if you made a video picking up sheeps poo I'd still watch it 😀
Camper conversion next
I can't watch this as i miss my Delica way to much, i made a big mistake letting it go when it failed it's MOT for metal moth.
33:00 is there a boost leak?
There must be, or the turbo has had it. its not as loud as it sounds in the video but I need to investigate it.
@@KrisHarbour Sounded to me like 1 of the hoses not tight somewhere on the cold side so sucks in extra air and loses boost pressure , but then ive had a vacum leak that sounded similar
I read the entire Ryan’s ruclips.net/user/postUgkxGqOCINHE0Z0E5gxzSdNi9NWGugRY5Hm2 Plans and was able to make a shed plan. Using Ryan’s Shed Plans alone, the shed itself is great. Where I wish I knew more is with respect to ground preparation and foundations. Maybe that's beyond the scope of Ryan’s Shed Plans.
Lots of us have never worked on an engine, but you made it all watchable, Kris. And you explained enough to keep folks interested, without making it into a dull lecture. No cheesy music. No drama or tears. Your joy at the end was worth every oily, chilly dark hour spent on that job. Thank you for sharing it with us!
for me its the methodical way you tackle problems .. we watch your channel for all the things you do , not for any one thing .. great channel great content ..
I watch my husband rebuild the engine on his 2014 dodge pickup and the trouble it made him crazy for 2 weeks. When he got it fixed he was incredibly happy and proud of himself. I can imagine the joy you felt getting it done! Congratulations!
Good for another 26 years and 200,000+ miles. Well worth a week of aggravation and knuckle banging. An impressive result for a first rebuild. Hope you're soon over being sick and are back to feeling better again.
Your self sufficiency is so inspiring! Looking forward to following the barn build!
Well done Kris. I admire your tenacity.
For future reference ... a sheet of glass and some grinding paste can be used to flatten things to a reasonable level ... glass on the table, paste on the glass, move the workpiece in figure 8 patterns until you're happy with it.
Dad made me do this to an 850 mini head in the late sixties. And valve grinding...... Never repeated the experience as an adult - advent of reliable Japanese vehicles!
@@effbee56 Oh the weekends of fun taking an 850 Mini van to bits and putting it back together again - wonderful! I wanted to be a car mechanic when I left school, but my headmistress didn’t think that it was a suitable job for a girl (!). I subsequently worked in a foundry, in pretty well every department, and loved every minute!
Good work, can we get an update on the van after you've logged some miles? That leaky injector and injection pump out of time would have been hurting your fuel economy. I'm curious if things get a lot better now that you've figured it out. Also as a mechanic for years I struggled with making a big mess and then cleaning up afterwards. I still do. Something that helped a little was getting a tool cart. The tools to do the job go in the cart, when that job is complete they go back in the box. That way you only have the tools out that you need to complete the job and any wrong sizes or single use tools go back each time you pull the right tool. It helps, right up until you fill your tool cart with junk.
Kris your amazing in what you do fella! And please keep your video's coming
So refreshing to see someone with a variety of skills. There's lots of highly skilled people about, but not many that can turn their hand to anything (or are at least willing to try) and Kris is certainly one of the few, and one that's willing to share his mistakes and failures too.
Please keep on filming and sharing, your a pleasure to watch.
it's TRUE what they say knowledge is power and this guy is proof of that 💯💯
Nemiks speeches have started to make a lot of sence recently. just replace empire with corporation and hey presto, Kris is Nemik's idea made flesh
I'd trust this man more than Bob Vila to work on my home/car.
I don’t think Bob actually knew which end of a hammer to use 😂 but Norm did all the thinking. Good sentiment though
Bob Vila is just a builder not a carpenter, they talk a good game but don't actually know the ins and outs.
Kris, don’t worry about not all your videos being about natural building. It’s good to have a bit of variety and to be honest I would even watch you picking up sheep poo in a field. I’ve been watching your videos for many years and always enjoy them no matter what the content. Keep up the great work. 👌🐑
I love to see the look of pride and joy on your face, and in your eyes, everytime you finished a project. And well deserved it is. Thank you for sharing.
What you don’t film is the way that you nut out and ponder problems before you tackle them, how you build your knowledge by researching, how you confirm your suspicions before just jumping into a project/problem, and that thought process and groundwork really shows through when you do film. You are extremely talented, and methodical, which makes your videos so thoroughly enjoyable and we celebrate your successes with you.
sorry to be that guy, but your torque wrench should not be used to yank fasteners beyond the click point.
This video was excellent. I love this content! To see you work through real world problems so well and honestly is inspiring. Thanks Kris
It is always a treat to watch you tackle any problem you encounter in your day. Whether carpentry, mechanical, electrical or farm. Been with you since you shared your first vid on your land. Never a disappointment!
Kris, nothing but absolute admiration for you. Not just in your adapt, improvise and overcome way of thinking, but also in your tenacious and dogged determination to get the job, any job done. Your knowledge of everything from farming, to electronics, to mechanics, to construction is also quite simply remarkable.
Sir, I salute you!
I'm hoping that more people besides myself comment about a statement which I fully disagree with you on! Because I believe that people anxiously await the next video from channel not only for the masterful skill sets that you have self taught and acquired over these last few years as you have thankfully and probably with much apprehension allowed us somewhat into your life. Kris I hope that you are feeling better and will be fully recovered soon and I think that many of us follow or subscribe to the channel because you have proven yourself as deserving of a loyal following. Guy please keep doing and being the amazing no bs person that you are.
Kris that shared moment with you when that knocking was sorted was great! Folks just know once you try, most times that empowerment pushes you on to more endeavours.
The sound that your tool chest drawers make when they click into place is so satisfying! That was a fun little journey to follow with you and your engine. "No leaks! Ha ha!"
I thought the same - sounds just like my old Snap-on box, satisfying ! Great video as usual but next time please oil the piston rings before you put the clamp on. Stu
That sandpaper cloth trick at 4:15 is amazing I will definitely use that in my life
Me too
How can I contact you as I’ve got a stream running through my ground and would like a hydro system
Kris- Do you need any volunteers this year for the barn build and if so how do we volunteer for you?
I'm the same son just get on with the job & tidy up after ,
we bon you got it no knocking . well don son spot on . i did not get the first desal to start Agency i did tow weeks latter . as i have got older & thing have got bad with my knees wen stuff drops on the floor it tends to stop there.
got a great laugh when you reved the engine near the end - and the triumphant Haha! Pecfect! what a great video - congrats on persistence (32:45 is about where the thing rocks) kudos to making something so mundane as rebuilding an engine turn into a full out successful conquest! sounds smooth now doesn’t it ~
Congrats Kris !! You never Fail to Impress me ! Love the Videos , keep up the good work !
I felt like you were about to dance a jig after that engine start. I know it’s impolitic for me to say that, it was obvious you were well pleased. Good for you.
Well done, great patience and persistence! Happy New Year to you and Dot.
Kris dont worry about what the content is, you film it we will watch it. Its all good stuff.👏
It is truly mind blowing the area of your skillset. Yes anyone can do what you do but 90 percent do not do what you do as well as you do it! I really enjoy watching from start to finish and also would like to applaud your editing as it includes all the right things.
Excellent work, Kris! Outstanding! Hey, Kris, I did notice something that may help in the future. I've seen people put short sections of fuel hose over the threaded ends of the connecting rod to further protect the crankshaft journals during reassembly. Just some PTP (Protect The Part). I saw it done years ago. I've yet to build an engine in the intervening decade or so. 🤣 She's a work horse for sure! Glad to see you got it back on the road!
Excellent job Kris... yet again you have demonstrated some of your many talents... you never give up! As usual I'm looking forward to your next project(s). The only thing wrong with this video was I did not see your cute cat!
I watch the blogger's for what ever they put out building/growing/ whatever, I enjoy what I see, otherwise I would not be watching. Well done on the rebuild of the van, what you are explaining went right over my head but who cares, you did it.
The things you're willing to have a go at and learn never cease to amaze me. Well done 👏
Kris, thank you for the vids I love watching all you do. Have you ever seen the young chinese girl who can stip down any moter or engine a do a complete rebuild Including the copper wire loom. her name is Linguor - mechanic her vids are worth watching too..
Yes, Lin Guoer makes some interesting videos, including a hydro project. See youtube.com/@LinGuoErOfficial
I LOVED watching you fix the engine! I rather learn how to do everything myself than giving everything away to so called ‘professionals’.
When working on vehicles I probably spend half my time looking for tools I put down five minutes earlier.
About the injector, he said "it's my fault". Spoken like a true problem-solver. Happy New Year and lovely to see whatever you wish to share.
Kris it is nice to learn new things, so don't stop showing us new things you are doing.
I think any work you're doing is just so interesting I thoroughly love your channel
I watch this channel for anything you do - all amazing!
I see you smile at the end and the knock disappeared, so I smiled knowing you got it done. I don't mind seeing this kind of thing. Good Job!!
Yay, can’t wait! At 40:00 in, I guarantee you that I feel as great as you do! Great job as always!
Dear Kris, I would most likely not have subscribed to your channel if it would have been solely about refitting engines. But as part of the process of keeping your 'estate' running, it feels like a really meaningful part of work. I have been spending a lot of time keeping a Yamaha 25 HP 2-stroke outboard engine running for our diving club (we now have a 25 HP 4-stroke engine because it's much more environment friendly) and while maintaining engines is not really a goal of the club, it was just one of the things we could not do without if we wanted to keep on using our boat. I really loved this episode of your channel, not in the last place because it is so very much encouraging for doing maintenance ourselves. Thanks a lot for sharing this.
Hey Kris, congrats on a good job
We have the same work problem, here's what helped me, tool trolly with trays on the top and the bottom, make sure all four wheels are castors.
Hi Kris...GOOD JOB .....i don't mind that you fixed your van...all your vids are good...Thank You For Your Time and Knowledge🕊🕊
Happy to see the progress on the old Mitsy, it’s one of the unsung heroes of the channel so really pleased you rebuilt the motor.
Don't worry, I hope I'm right when I say ppl actually love your channel bcs you fix and make things, cars also, and geniously.
Kris you really are an inspiration. I always wait in anticipation for the next video. You are a go to for most things. Want to watch something about wood work? Kris Harbour. Want to watch something about metal work? Kris Harbour. Want to watch something on sustainable living? Kris Harbour. Your knowledge and willing to learn and give it a go is amazing. Myself and partner are wanting to do very similar to yourself with regards to living but it’s a lot harder down here in sunny Cornwall to get the permissions needed. Keep up the hard work!!
I'm always inspired by the confidence in the projects you take on.
Random question, do you listen to music through your ear defenders?
We will watch whichever project you are willing to share with us. Thank you!
I totally agree with William, Great Knowledge, and enthusiasm for all things practical, I'm in awe too 🙌😊
One of your best videos ever Kris. I get it regarding tools. But I have to say I’d be gutted if you ever stopped making content 😢
Kris, I watch this channel to see you handle whatever is needed to live and be productive. This self-reliance and fixit part of the channel fits in perfectly with your whole scheme. Sure, "Natural Building" is in the title, but really, you are repairing a car in the middle of your natural building, self-built. So it shows the practical outcome. I watch so many channels that are of people kitting out their workshop and tools and then they never make anything practical or show the end results. You do the whole thing.
Kris - I'm all the way from Melbourne Australia, your watched around the world - its not just about the farm work. It really is great to see you working on all the things you do. There is a sense of amazement in many of the comments, and for me, at they way you can turn your hand to anything and with good cheer. I always wonder where your knowledge comes from.
I have an average understanding of engines - but this was one of the best rebuilds I have watched and made it far more accessible than many.
Good for another 26 years!🌞👍 Brilliant Kris. Happy New year to you both. x
Your skill and tenacity is a constant inspiration to me....thanks!..
This guy is a real legend IMO, he lives how we all should live, he must pay zero to HMRC in taxes, no electric, no gas, nothing, grows his own food, only thing i can think he pays for is fuel for his cars vans but i bet thats not so regular - if you wanna give the finger to big corps and gov this is the way to do it
He runs a business so will be taxed through that.
@@oldmanronan8473 only if its declared - cash is king
Satisfying to watch. You've put a lot of time and money into fixing it. The van has great value for you, doesn't it?
Love what you do but was a bit concerned you didn't use any assembly lube or oil on the gudgeon pins or even on the rings to give some lubrication on initial cranking..... Good job though!
yes & done a few. engine build & regrinds. cheek you have know crakes in the bores &
replace the oil pump & new shells if you can afford it. if it ben regrind make shore you get all the grinding dust . out of the oilways. ues brake cleaning spray to wash out the oil ways if it a New regrind new baring & oil pump you will not won't a oil pump to fail with a new regrind .
Good choice, you will know what you have now, rather than taking a chance on an unknown purchase
I saw your Herdwick sheep ! I am so sad ! I dont have anymore, the woolf killed them
So happy to see a Kris Harbour video 🎉🎉🎉🎉 missed ya man. Love the rebuild content! Can’t wait for the barn!
Thanks, Kris. You provide so much fun.
Man That's an awesome feeling I know all too well Great job Awesome video Congratulations
Kris... Good work. Your range of talents is very impressive. You are truly a "Gitter Dun" kind of guy.
That’s the face of a man full of pride and satisfaction 👌🏻, well done Kris even though you make me feel so inadequate 😂👍🏻.
Wow Kris, Awesome job! I have a Mitsubishi Delica L300 from 1986 that is due for some TLC. I watch your stuff and am awed and inspired by your knowledge. Keep it up
Love the video! Glad that you keep things going instead of just buying new things. So awesome to see you again!
Good on ya Mate! Your channel covers all parts of Ag-Mechanics. The name of Texas A&M University means "Agricultural and Mechanical" and this is what runs a small or large farm and feeds the world.
First time diesel rebuild? Kris, I suspect if required you could handle most any task - ever consider cardiac surgery, Dr. Harbour?
I was listening intently before you started it the last time... I did a little jump for joy when I heard the sound of a healthy engine! It IS a wonderful feeling when it finally all comes together..
Another great video! Well done Kris! You've got a great wealth of knowledge and very broad skill set. I love your ethos and how self sufficient you are, a man after my own heart. You could do with a nice rocket stove to heat your workshop, I developed a hybrid stove that combines a conventional stove with a rocket mass heater using a lot of stainless for the internals, probably about 95% efficient and I could still improve on that. Your welcome to the plans if you're interested. Keep up the great work!
Matt.
Hi Kris, did you get my response on telegram?
Well that saved you thousands!
Yes the van is great. It keeps stuff dry!
Sounds like turbo has dry bearing!
I’m sure you will fix it!
Nice job love your tenacity chasing down faults 👍
What a mammoth task, this does come across in just your 40 minute video. A great example of grit and determination to finish a job, even at the end you still consider that a new turbo may still be required to be fitted. Congratulations on the engine rebuild and 30k miles on veg oil😎👍
Hey Kris. Before you buy a new turbo, check that the noise isn't a boost air pipe leak. It sounds a bit like it!
I was about to make the same comment. The noise sounds like a boost leak. Check the joints of all the intercooler pipework.
You're doing it wrong! You're supposed to scrap it and buy a brand new one off the dealer's lot and put the chain of interest inflated payments around your ankle! (LOL! if anyone was wondering...)
After the views drop off for this video, change the title to include the delica make model and year and you’ll likely bring in a whole new set of subscribers who own and wrench on these rigs. Also, I’m not sure if you’ve convinced me, or talked me out of importing a Delica to the US for my future farm rig!
One of the best feelings as a mechanic, to troubleshoot and repair something on your own accord, and to see the vehicle or component operate after hours, days or even a week of labor.
you are in the UK, the weather is always nasty at this time of year, it is just how it is. I am glad you got to the bottom of the nocking, it was sounding rough but it is much better now. Is the power generators producing enough power for your needs as the solar will be down with all the rain we have been having, how is the wind turbine and water system working, I would be interested in knowing what % of your power is produced by which means during the winter period
Yes, the weather can really put a damper on working on the barn, foundation! But, the diesel engine, replacement was ausum, watching you working on it.When you have a dream, anything is possible!
Good Job!😀👌
Hi Kris, just so you know, I got an odd message via my email claiming to be from you saying to contact you via Telegram to claim a prize. Pretty sure that’s not how you roll. Looks like someone is potentially scamming people by impersonating you! On that note, my previous comment a couple of days ago says there is one reply, but nothing shows up if you click on it.
I really respect you because you are such an Allrounder. You are skilled in so many different ways of repairing and engineering.
I'll watch whatever you do Kris. Fantastic skills around so many areas. Really appreciate you showing us the process also. Great stuff and keep it up.
