I fixed The Land Rover And Then It Broke Again!

  • I have had nothing but problems with vehicles for the last few weeks. my Delica van broke down on the motorway. I got the Land Rover working right and then on its maiden voyage the clutch went. I had a feeling the clutch would not last long because I could smell it in the engine bay but I thought it would last a little while at least. I got Raf over to help and over two days we fixed it.
I also installed a new head on the Delica van but its still has some major problems. I think the engine needs to come out and have a rebuild. That might be a winter project.

Check the PCV system if it has one. might be clogged. If your new head came with a new valve cover makes sure it actually has a breather or PCV fitting! Compare the old head gasket with the new one, and the old head with the new head to make sure all opening line up and exist on the new head.

    • @rhiantaylor3446

Without spending money and assuming worst case it is already dead, if you can spare the time drop the sump, take the head back off and bring a few pistons out - might be a ring/piston problem although the good compressions make that less likely. Whatever you do - don't give up until you can see the cause of the problem - you can do it !

I love your video's Kris. You live the life I wish I did, but as a 60 year old I may have missed my bus. I have always been a trouble shooter, and in my younger days it was all ice engines (now its computers), so I REALLY felt your elation when you had the timing issue fixed (I had a similar issue in the early 1980s with a Datsun 180B timing chain, but once I worked out what was wrong, the feeling of winning was super), so I truly congratulate you, you not only see that there is an issue, you then feel it, and then use logic to find the answer. I recommend changing the winch wire for a synthetic rope for safety and handling. I have a lot of winching experience as an off roader I have seen both fail. Steel wire will whip dangerously when it fails but synthetic rope will just drop to the ground. Synthetic rope is far easier to handle and it is stronger at the same diameter so if you go narrower and you can gain reach. Finally it can be easily field spliced if necessary.

Hi Kris, on my Volvo that's been run on veg oil for years after a good run I noticed the oil pressure light flickering at idle and shortly after (on the same journey) the turbo blew up. On investigation what had happened is the the veg oil I guess when cold had bypassed the piston rings, gone into the sump and polymerized. When I stripped it I found the pick up pipe 75% blocked and I pulled out 2 hand fulls of plastic like material from the veg oil. I was wondering if the high crank case pressure could be a blocked breather doe to the veg oil as you're getting good compression. Just a thought really, probably unlikely if it was fine before it over heated though.

I had rings gum up on a vw sdi engine on veg, granted it was direct injection and I think the Mitsubishi is indirect so less prone to gumming, but that started to show symptoms of high crank case pressure, it still ran and started fine, but enough compression was getting past the rings to cause problems, my oil also was polymerizing.

    • @KrisHarbour
      @KrisHarbour  2 года назад +3

The big 'issue' with running on veg oil is that it cleans all the crap. When I went over to veg oil on the T4, doing nothing more than simply using veg oil rather than diesel, the main issue was th filter clogging up quickly, which, to change on a T4 is a pain , so I simply added some cheap replaceable inline filters and all I did was filter waste oil through a j-cloth and as winters are harsh here, I would add a half a litre of white spirit to stop the oil gelling.

Go onto a good Landrover forum, there will be plenty of professional and diy mechanics that can help you with information and what to look out for. You should drop a dial indicator probe into a cylinder to find TDC unless you have a mark on the flywheel or other. Marks on the chain don’t mean much unless you can line it up with other locations.

Thanks so much for sharing this process with us, I think we all felt a little relieved when the Rover finally started 😂. RIP van, you will not be forgotten.

Just a few questions. First at the end of the vid when it was raining, you stated you needed to get the "van loaded", nicest "van" I,ve seen.😆 Second, now your gonna have to build a cover/garage for that "van" as nice as it is. Third, would it be worth while to sell the LR? I don't know much about them but if it would turn a nice profit to get you a dependable rig and put a nice sum in the bank would seem to be a no brainier. Or is this a "dream rig" that you have always wanted?

This was a fascinating, interesting and educational video - yet I have absolutely no interest in vehicle engines! It is always a pleasure watching you determine what is wrong, how it can be fixed and then seeing your smiles of joy when the job finished. Thank you for taking us along, regardless of the type of project or job.

Wow, just wow. :) That feeling of doing something you've never done before and figuring it out is such a high. Congrats!
About the crankcase getting pressured up in the van, it seems strange that compression would be good but you'd be getting crankcase pressure. Normally there is a breather that routes crankcase gases back to the intake, could this be plugged? A quick test is to run the engine with the oil cap off. You should see some gases coming out, but if it's not a huge amount, the breather should be able to route that back through the intake.
I was shocked to see a pto-driven winch, but living in Canada I have no experience with land rovers. Very cool.

Good thing your a universal thinking person! Glad to see you have a friend that can help you!
Unfortunate about van! It served you well! The vent pressure problem I’m sure you will figure out!
Thanks for the update, always appreciated Kris!
Dots looks like she’s working as hard as you while you work on vehicles!
    Thanks again Kris!
O one thing! Keep the undercoat as thin as possible! Great on new but water can get behind and actually cause more damage than not having!
